The text is also presented below: We are pleased to announce the 2021-22 Surveillance Studies Network (SSN) Small Research Grant competition. The SSN Small Grants scheme provides funding to support junior/early-career scholars working in economically under-resourced regions of the world. This year, we will be able to fund two awards of up to £1500 each, to be used during the 2021-2022 academic year in support of surveillance studies research (for more information about what constitutes surveillance studies research, we recommend reviewing articles published in Surveillance & Society<https://ojs.library.queensu.ca/index.php/surveillance-and-society/issue/vie…> (http://surveillance-and-society.org/) the SSN's international journal of surveillance studies). These awards will also be accompanied by a two-year SSN membership. The Small Grants Committee will review and select recipients based on the following criteria and process. Eligibility Surveillance Studies Network members (or non-members who conduct surveillance-related research and would like to become part of SSN) are encouraged to apply, with preference given to persons who: * justify themselves as working in an economically under-resourced region; * are early career researchers (i.e., a doctoral student or researcher who has earned their PhD in the last five years); * have not previously received funding through the SSN Small Research Grant; and, * submit all required criteria prior to the application deadline. Evaluation Criteria We will be evaluating applications based on their articulation of specific research-related activities that would significantly augment the applicant's program of research, but that would not be feasible without additional funding. Additionally, we will take into consideration the overall feasibility of the proposed work and the extent to which it is likely to make a significant contribution to surveillance studies. Process Please submit a brief proposal (approximately 1 page, single spaced) outlining: * the activities to be conducted with the funding, * the importance of these activities to your program of research, * justification of your region of residence as economically under-resourced, * description of your suitability for the award based on the other criteria of preference, and * a timeline for completion of the activities planned. (All awarded funds must be spent by June 30, 2022). Additionally, please submit a budget (1-page maximum) outlining your plans for using any awarded funds up to a maximum of £1500 (e.g., transcription services, informant/human-subjects payments, travel costs to conduct field research, technical equipment, conference fees, etc.). Moverover, the way information circulates in OSNEM impacts on the formation of opinions and on the social roles of users and their influence on others. The OSNEM role in information and opinion diffusion has dramatically increased since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, with many physical activities being "migrated" to the online world. OSNEM are extensively used for spreading information, opinions and ideas, but also to propagate fake news and rumors and these threats to trust in information are posing even more serious socio-economic challenges during the pandemic. Therefore, prevention of spam, bots and fake accounts, information leakage, trustworthiness of information and trust between users are relevant research issues associated with information diffusion. Investigating ways through which information and opinion spread can be controlled (e.g., by modifying the underlying network structure) is also fundamental. This special issue seeks contributions pushing the state of the art in all facets of information and opinion diffusion in Online Social Networks and Media. We solicit manuscripts where quantitative and/or data-driven approach is used to investigate information and opinion diffusion in OSNEM. iCS CfP: Geopolitics of Chinese internets

Thank you! ****Call for Papers**** * The Geopolitics of Chinese Internets* *A Special Issue of Information, Communication & Society (iCS)* Guest Editors: Jack Linchuan Qiu, National University of Singapore Peter K. Yu, Texas A&M University Elisa Oreglia, King’s College London *Aim and Scope:* Conceptions about The Internet, powerful and popular as they were, seem to have ebbed away. The Great Firewall of China has more than withstood the test of time. It has multiplied into countless fault lines within the People's Republic, around it, and far beyond. The cosmopolitan cyberspace has vanished due to Beijing's policies and practices, as well as forces working against them. As a result, we now confront the complexity and contradictions of many Chinese internets, in the plural. This *iCS *special issue calls attention to the geopolitics of Chinese internets, dissected through social, cultural, economic, discursive, and/or historical approaches; using qualitative, quantitative, and/or computational methods. By geopolitics we understand not only the role of nation-states and classic international relations but also evolving dynamics among private-sector and civil-society players as well as cultural communities of all kinds. In the ruins of a single unified network, be it Barlow's cyber-libertarian paradise or Beijing's "One World One Dream" à la the 2008 Olympics, we need to first map out the lines of demarcation between the Chinese and the others, and among the many Chinese Internets, separated through sociopolitical, geo-linguistic, technocultural, as well as ideological differences, which reinforce old divisions while producing new ones. Examining geostrategic fault lines that mark out the uneven landscape full of disjunctures and tectonic clashes, we ask: What are the utility and limits of key notions such as sovereignty and security? How and why do we get here? What's the balance between centrifugal and centripetal forces, between top-down control and grassroots movements? How to prevent discourses of conflict from being turned into actual wars between the internets? Is it still important to pursue peace and unity? If so, how? With funding from the National Science Foundation’s Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier<https://www.nsf.gov/eng/futureofwork.jsp> initiative, this fellowship program will confer a select number of $50,000 awards to eligible US doctoral students to enable them to focus solely on their research during the 2021–2022 academic year. In sponsoring this program, we hope to identify the next set of leaders in building the deep and systematic knowledge required to simultaneously consider the technical, individual, group, organizational, and societal issues involved in leveraging today’s expanding technological capabilities to serve both work and workers. Eligible candidates for this program are late-stage students enrolled in a research-based doctoral program at an accredited US-institution who are engaged in research that embraces the future of work as a socio-technological phenomenon—one that requires attention to both social and technological systems as well as the implications of their interdependencies. Addressing this challenge requires a research approach that expands beyond a delimited focus on autonomous systems qua systems and instead endorses a convergent approach, namely “the deep integration of knowledge, techniques, and expertise from multiple fields to form new and expanded frameworks” (NSF, 2017). As such, we welcome candidates who draw on a wide variety of disciplinary perspectives, including labor studies, law, psychology, computer science, management science, policy studies, anthropology, sociology, learning science, and cognitive science, among others. Future WAIM Fellows will interact as a cohort to enable peer exchange and learning. The cohort will come together physically at two meetings during the 2021-22 academic year. The first will be a kickoff event, currently planned for September 2021 in Manhattan. The second event will be during the summer of 2022 at the final WAIM Convergence Conference (location tbd). We will also require that each Fellow attend the dissertation defense of at least 2 peer Fellows virtually and will encourage each Fellow to open any public presentation of their research to other members of the cohort as well as members of the larger WAIM network. Fellowship applications will be evaluated in relation to their potential for intellectual merit, broader impact, and resonance with the WAIM RCN mission and theme<https://waim.network/about>. For the purpose of this call, we define ‘work’ as the mental or physical activity to achieve tangible benefit such as income, profit, or community welfare. We use the phrase ‘intelligent machines’ to refer to computing technologies characterized by autonomy, the ability to learn, and the ability to interact with other systems and with humans. The first cohort of WAIM Fellows will be announced in early August 2021.
