Hi all, The Center for Democracy & Technology is now accepting applications for its 2022 cohort of non-residential Fellows. <https://cdt.org/about/fellows/> The Fellows program is a great opportunity for researchers and academics to help inform important tech policy debates and to engage with policy-makers in the US and EU. The Work in the Age of Intelligent Machines Research Coordination Network<https://waim.network/> is delighted to announce the five WAIM Doctoral Research Fellows<https://waim.network/fellows2021> for the 2021-22 academic year. The Fellows were selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants, which was systematically reviewed by an interdisciplinary panel of judges. Each Fellow will be supported with a $50,000 stipend to support the advancement of their dissertation research. Over the coming year, Fellows will participate as key actors in the WAIM network by sharing their progress at a series of public talks and as part of the final WAIM Convergence Conference in the summer of 2022. To further explore human-AI decision-making, this dissertation will explore the connection between decision makers’ AI literacy and their use of AI-based recommendations to assess job applicants. The primary goals of this two-phase dissertation research are to 1) develop a scale measure for perceptions and understanding of AI, or AI literacy, and 2) test the scale within a hiring scenario experiment. Frontline health workers are increasingly using such systems, or collecting data for intelligent systems in their everyday work. Taking a participatory approach, the researcher will investigate how data-driven systems might be designed to support workers by selectively automating routine workflows and enabling better distribution of work. In addition to contributing towards eventual improved health outcomes for care-seekers from underserved communities, this research targets improved futures for health workers and robust healthcare ecologies overall. To do so, the researcher creates peer-to-peer support systems which leverage both human and machine intelligence to scaffold skill, identity, and career development among individuals engaged in non-traditional, alternative working arrangements. Overall, the dissertation research aims to inform new design methods for an inclusive future of work for vulnerable workers and contributes two open-source software systems which introduce novel algorithms and interaction design paradigms to support human-machine collaboration. As many water agencies across the United States are adopting similarly complex sets of intelligent, autonomous digital technologies, many different actors collaborate during the leadup to implementation. The researcher is most interested in how the anticipation of the future affects work, technology and organizing long before the effects of digital transformation become apparent. In addition to ethnographic data, the project also includes social network data to track how patterns of interaction and advice seeking shift in the early stages of selecting and adopting new digital technologies. The designed alert system simultaneously considers two aspects that together determine the efficacy of alerts in practice: (i) personalized prediction of sepsis risk for each patient, (ii) timely response of alert users---caregivers---in following care protocols, i.e., caregivers’ compliance behavior. The findings of this research provide guidelines for the development of effective alert systems that can ultimately improve the quality of care in various healthcare settings. Dear All, The third Budapest Workshop on Philosophy of Technology will be held December 9-10, 2021, at Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Proposal abstracts are due by 31 August 2021. Instructions and details are online: https://www.budpt.eu/. There are no fees of any kind. As in 2019, the presenters will be offered an opportunity to publish a full paper in the WoS SSCI-indexed InfTars (“Information Society”: inftars.infonia.hu) journal after the workshop. At budpt.eu you can browse a selection of the papers from BudPT19. BudPT21 hopes to be an in-person conference. This displays our trust in medical technology as well as a certain amount of optimistic bias. However, should any accepted participants become unable to attend, they will still be able to submit a pre-recorded video and publish the full paper (but we will not transition to a hybrid conference). See the details at the event website. Please only submit with the intent of travelling to Budapest but delay all hard expenses as long as you can. While on-line events are great because of their flexibility and low barrier of entry, the atmosphere of a face-to-face event can never be fully replicated, and this is exactly what we are trying to create. 2021 Nancy Baym Book Award Winner

It is our great pleasure to announce that the Nancy Baym Book Award committee has chosen Distributed Blackness: African American Cybercultures (2020 NYU Press) by André Brock, Jr., as this year’s winner. Distributed Blackness is a joyful exploration of Black cybercultural expression, which, along the way, claims its rightful place in the history of Black intellectualism and forges new theoretical paths for AoIR scholarship. Brock carefully constructs a methodology, Critical Technocultural Discourse Analysis, which affords a powerful way to trace how identities are constructed online. Moreover, he makes a case for studying the libidinal economy - energies that emerge from desire and fear - as a key conceptual window into the circulation of digital media. Brock then explores Web browsers, Black Twitter, and Black discourse, concluding with a deeply theoretical conception of Black technoculture. And, like all of the best internet scholarship, Distributed Blackness resonates beyond digital networks. We’re witnessing a backlash against calls for social justice — made most explicit by the transnational attacks on "critical race theory," but also visible in many smaller acts of intolerance and marginalization. In the face of this, Brock invites us to “happy reading” and a joyous affirmation of Blackness online. It is, to use a term from the book, a statement of pathos, a pleasurable excess of life in a time when life seems imperiled – and where the perils are not equally distributed across society. It is an essential book for AoIR and beyond. This is the point at which the committee would usually say how hard it was to pick a winner, but this year it was easy. The committee was unanimous in its choice, and abundant with praise. This is to take nothing away from the many other brilliant books we read this year, and we are grateful for all of the submissions.
