Hello! Planning is under way for the upcoming VIRTUAL conference AoIR 2021: Independence! Dates: 12 - 16 October Conference registration is free for all active members of AoIR. To register, first make sure that your membership is good through the end of October at https://aoir.org/membership/. Before the conference: We are now seeking submissions for Satellite events to be held the week preceding the conference. Accepted Satellite events will become part of the official AoIR 2021 conference schedule. Proposals for Satellite events are due 1 August 2021 and you can find instructions here ( https://members.aoir.org/AoIR2021SatelliteEvents) Beyond the Satellite events, prior to the conference, we will have our regular Doctoral Colloquium (8 October) and Early Career Researcher Workshop (12 October). During the conference: The AoIR 2021 conference will kick off with a LIVE keynote from Dr. André Brock from Georgia Tech on 12 October at 22:00 UTC (https://members.aoir.org/AoIR2021Keynote) During the main conference, to focus conversations during the LIVE moderated discussions, we have selected 3 pre-recorded spotlight panels. These panels were chosen for their clear connection to the conference theme and keynote, and should spark conversations across conference attendees. We are asking everyone to watch a specific spotlight panel video for each of the three main conference days (13-15 October), prior to the LIVE moderated discussions held three times a day (AoIRTime #1 at 5:00 UTC, AoIRTime #2 at 13:00 UTC, AoIRTime #3 at 21:00 UTC). We will also list playlists with related themes for each day. All panels and paper presentations will be hosted in the AoIR YouTube channel and organized into thematically linked playlists. In addition, however, all are invited to join in a LIVE Birds of a Feather (BOF) session in AoIRTown (GatherTown) where you and others who share research interests will have a chance to discuss your research informally. You can attend as many of these as you’d like! Immediately after the spotlight panels and moderated sessions, you’ll have either BOF events or LIVE social events, including Karaoke and the popular AoIR Pub Quiz! Finally, the conference will close with the Annual General Meeting on 16 October at AoIRTime #2 (13:00 UTC). The arrival of populism, the fragmentation of the vote (Stroud, 2010) and difficulties in attaining a majority that allow solid governments to be formed, pose serious questions regarding the future in hybrid communications scenarios, in which disinformation (Guess; Nyhan; Reifler, 2018) begins to reach worrying levels for the majority of citizens. Traditional mainstream media losing credibility, and the possibilities of creating and distributing messages via social media at the same time, has opened the door to political and social actors who had previously been excluded from it, but has also lowered the norms on the circulation of messages focused on disseminating lies or hate speech. In this context, far from facilitating agreement and unity around democratic values, they have contributed to polarisation and disintegration (Sunstein, 2019), as well as a greater presence and visibility of political positions that directly confront these principles. The emergence of a party in Spanish politics that agrees with the principles of the extreme right, and represented in institutions after almost four decades on the fringes, raises the need to reflect on a political, social and media scenario that feeds back on the repercussions in the democratic system. Quality, fact-checked information, based on the public interest in the content, respectful of the ethical principles of the profession is one of the democratic pillars; the guarantee that citizens will have sufficient data to make a substantiated decision when voting. In recent decades, however, the media’s position on commercial formulas, the growing politicisation and the public perception of lower quality –as witnessed by both experts and staff– has contributed to reduced confidence in mainstream media in a context whereby the media have blamed the effects of the economic crisis, coinciding with a crisis in business models. The loss of confidence also affects public representation bodies –both institutions and political parties– that are suffering from an exhaustion that puts major challenges for the democratic system into the open. In this context, this special issue on «Communication and crisis in the public space» invites an in-depth reflection on the future challenges of a society that sees traditional forms of representation being questioned while living with growing disintegration. This cfp is committed to work with an international outlook, both theoretical and methodological, that explore the interaction between communication processes and political and social change processes, with the aim of understanding the implications. Case studies or merely descriptive articles are therefore rejected. As a guideline, the following possible topics are proposed for this special edition on «Communication and crisis in the public space»: – Debate, discrepancy, division and polarisation: Media feedback – Representative democracy: crisis of leadership and threats – Brexit, Euroscepticism and the future of European institutions – The socio-economic crisis, the pandemic and fragile democracies – Scepticism, apathy, negativity and political cynicism – Emotions and emotional communities – Politics of the other: from adversary to moral and political enemy – Populist parties. The “Web Archives: Researcher Skills & Tools” survey, led by Sharon Healy (PhD Candidate at the Maynooth University in Ireland and the co-organiser of the EWA conference https://ewaconference.com/ ), is the first part of a larger Web Archive Researcher/Skills Analysis study conducted within WARCnet<https://cc.au.dk/en/warcnet/> (Web ARChive studies network researching web domains and events). The study seeks participation from archivists, librarians, curators, information managers, scholars, researchers, students, historians, library patrons, and members of the public. The survey aims to identify, and document skills and knowledge required to achieve a range of different research goals within web archiving, and for the use of the archived web for research. Please note, it is equally important to attain participation from respondents who are novice users, as it is to attain responses from regular or experienced users. This study will take approximately 15 minutes to fill out. Completion of the survey is voluntary, and participants can withdraw at any time. Apologies for crossposting Hello Friends, In response to concerns raised by our membership, The Video Game Studies Scholarly Interest Group will be running a free online information session for students, practitioners, and scholars interested in presenting research at the Society for Cinema and Media Studies 2022 conference, which will be taking place between March 31st and April 3rd at the Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park and Swissôtel. The information session will take place on Tuesday August 3rd @ 12 PM PST/ 2 PM CT/ 3 PM EST over Zoom, and it will feature advice for prospective conference attendees on the drafting of panel and paper proposals that meet conference guidelines, insight from a member of a past programming committee, and an opportunity for current members interested in connecting with prospective conference attendees for the purposes of collaborating on game and gaming related panel proposals. It is a showcase for high quality oral and poster presentations and demonstrations sessions. This conference aims to be a platform for multi and interdisciplinary research at the interplay between Information and Communication Technologies, Biomedical, Neuro-cognitive, and Experimental research. This research includes the design, experimental evaluation and standardization of new ICT scalable systems and in-silico systems for new and future inclusive and sustainable technologies that benefit all: healthy people, people with disabilities or other impairments, people having chronic diseases, etc. User-centered design and innovation, new intuitive ways of human -computer interaction, and user acceptance are the topics of particular interest. Conference Topics Relevant topics include (but are not limited to) the following: • AI and Cognition, Cognitive Mechatronics, Human-Machine Interaction, Cobotics, Model-based design and configuration tools for healthcare and well-being, AI methods for medical device testing • Systems for management of health and care (mental health, pain, neurological disorders, sight, hearing, balance, space awareness; sensory based physiological and psychological non-invasive measurements, preventive healthcare, m-healthcare, e-healthcare, integrated care, serious games, electronic health record, self-management, patient-centered systems for survivorship, palliation and/or end-of-life care) • Precision medicine • ICT for in-silico trials • Implantable medical devices • Computational methods for medical device • Models for human-device interaction for medicine • Systems promoting access to the socio-economical and cultural environment • Age-friendly systems for active and healthy aging (telepresence, robotics solutions, innovative solutions for independent living, innovative elderly care, integrated care, age-related risks prevention/detection) • Multimodal assistive ICT devices to empower people with sensory, cognitive, motor, balance and spatial impairments • ICT systems to improve the quality of life and for daily life activities assistance (education, recreation, and nutrition) • Smart living homes and wearables (Intelligent and personalized digital solutions for sustaining and extending healthy and independent living; personalized early risk detection and intervention) • New experimental validation methods with end-users • Standardization, certification, labeling, privacy, security and communication issues (related to aging well, to sensory impairment) High-quality original submissions that address such future issues, show the design and evaluation in (near-) real scenarios, explain how to benchmark systems, and outline the education and training procedures for acquiring new perceptual skills while using such systems are welcome. Research and technical papers are expected to present significant and original contributions validated with the targeted end-users. Early works and works- in-progress are invited to submit a short or demo paper. Submissions should clearly state the progress beyond the existing state-of- the-art and the expected societal benefits of the developed technology. When possible, validate scenarios with the target user groups and well-identified technology readiness levels (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technology_readiness_level) should be at least outlined. Special Session on Active Assisted Living (AAL) Do you do research or commercial work in the active and healthy ageing area and you want to participate in the discussion driving the future of healthy ageing? Do you have a funded project in the AAL programme and would like to present the results of the project? Then the Special Session on AAL is the perfect opportunity for you to be involved in an ecosystem that promotes active and healthy ageing. This special session at the IHAW 2021 conference aims to bring together the community of healthy ageing to present their results and to discuss the existing opportunities in health technology and reflect on the future of ageing well in the digital world. You will be presented with the opportunity to meet and discuss with several stakeholders from universities, industry, regional and national authorities, private companies working with older adults and many more. You can use the opportunity to showcase the best practices and find solutions to challenges through presentations, discussions, workshops and networking. The Special Session on AAL is the ideal meeting place for presenting the results from cutting-edge, funded AAL projects, as well as independent research or commercial work in the active and healthy ageing area, performed from: • Universities and research institutions • End-user organisations and companies working with older adults • Industry professionals involved in the technology sector with an interest in active and healthy ageing • Health care and social care providers • Individuals and organisations implicated in the AAL funded projects The goal of this Special Session is to engage researchers and all relevant stakeholders of the healthy ageing value chain into networking and discussions to present their experiences and provide answers and solutions to problems and issues faced by older adults. This community is of great importance since it drives and aims to achieve better conditions and a healthier and improved society for the future of older adults. The proactive involvement of the community in conceptualising, designing and developing cost-effective systems that offer services to serve our ageing society, as well as the presentation of the solutions and discussion and exchange of ideas in this special session aims to drive and cultivate innovative thinkers, creative people and change makers in the area of active and healthy ageing. Please follow the submission guidelines and important dates as they are stated below and make sure that under the abstract of your submitted paper there is the statement: "Submitted to the Special Session on AAL". Accepted papers will be published by Springer in the CCIS Series. Submissions We invite three types of paper submissions: 1. Research and Technical papers, up to 15 pages, describing original unpublished research, making a substantial contribution to the research field 2. Short papers, up to 6 pages, describing original unpublished research, making a small but solid contribution to the field 3. Demos, up to 4 pages, describing innovative tools that address topics relevant to the conference All submissions will be reviewed by the Program Committee.
