We’re running a workshop at CSCW 2021 focused on privacy considerations around smart homes and the internet of things: Designing for Data Awareness: Addressing Privacy and Security Concerns About ‘Smart’ Technologies The internet of things (IoT) and smart home technologies are pervasive in the U.S. and abroad. Devices like smart speakers, cameras, thermostats, and vacuums promise to save consumers time and energy and to make tasks easier. Many devices also provide significant benefits through accessibility features that offer hands-free options, voice commands, and management through smartphone apps. At the same time, however, researchers and the media have documented a number of vulnerabilities in these devices, which raises concerns about what and how much data is being collected, how that data is used, and who has access to the data. In this one-day workshop, participants will work together to brainstorm potential solutions for making smart device data more visible and interpretable for consumers. Through rotating breakout sessions and full-group discussions, participants will identify data-based threats in popular smart home technologies, select data flows that are most concerning, and generate design ideas for tools or other artifacts that can help consumers make more informed decisions about using these devices. Opportunities for networking and future collaborations will also be incorporated. He holds a PhD in Gender and Cultural Studies from the University of Sydney, Australia. His research primarily focuses on queer media and culture in contemporary China. He is the author of Queer Comrades: Gay Identity and Tongzhi Activism in Postsocialist China (NIAS Press, 2018), Queer China: Lesbian and Gay Literature and Visual Culture under Postsocialism (Routledge, 2020) and Queer Media in China (Routledge, 2021). ABSTRACT This talk charts a brief history of queer community media in contemporary China. The past thirty years has witnessed the formation of minority sexual identities and communities in urban China; it has also seen a proliferation of media forms and texts produced and consumed by LGBTQ people. These media forms consist of leaflets, zines, pagers, websites and dating apps. These media practices include oral history documentaries, internet radio and webcasts, film and cultural festivals, and DIY video-making workshops. What do these media forms and practices tell us about queer identities, communities and cultures? What insights can we gain from them about identity, rights and social change in contemporary China? How can Chinese media and communication studies as a scholarly field go beyond the ‘mass media and communication’ paradigm to attend to the communitarian, alternative and activist forms of media? This talk draws on the author’s new book Queer Media in China (Routledge, 2021) to highlight the pivotal role of community media in queer identity formation, community building and the articulation of a ‘minor’ China.

Thanks very much, Anthony Bak Buccitelli *Call for submissions: Emerging Perspectives in the Study of Folklore and Performance* How are folklore studies and performance studies currently connected? What are the divergences and convergences between the study of folklore through performance and the study of performance through folklore? There has been an intimacy between these two fields and phenomena since the mid-20th century. Whether it be through the work of Richard Bauman, Erving Goffman, Roger Abrahams, Charles Briggs, Richard Schechner, Dell Hymes, José Esteban Muñoz, Peggy Phelan, Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, Deborah Kapchan, or Diana Taylor, the relationship between folklore and performance represents a long history of engagement that is both explicit and implicit in expressing interconnected methods, perspectives, and theoretical orientations. This volume, *Emerging Perspectives in the Study of Folklore and Performance*, seeks to forefront the ways that folklore and performance inform each other and are actively situated in our world today. We are calling for submissions that explore existing and emerging discourses between folklore studies and performance studies. These necessarily include development in areas of research and theory in both fields. Topics may include but are not limited to the intersection of folklore and performance in digital lives, race and technology, social movements, ritual, narrative, quotidian expressive culture, archival practices, ambient play, post-human intersectionalities, speculative world-making, encoded constructions of self and culture, and embodied knowledge. We are also interested in approaches that include an analysis of concepts like practice/praxis, repetition, event, mediation, mobility, materiality, enactment, ephemerality, tradition, and insurgent temporalities. We envision this volume being placed at a university press that speaks to audiences in both folklore and performance studies. Influencer Marketing Meta-analysis

HI Everyone, My name is Guy Golan and I am an Associate Professor in the Bob Schieffer College of Communication at Texas Christian University. My colleagues (Jameson Hayes, Jiyoung Lee, and Nathan Walter) and I are currently working on a meta-analysis of social media influencers. We would be grateful for any information that you can give us on unpublished data (conference papers, advised dissertations, in press, etc.). It is important to emphasize that we don't need the actual dataset but only information that will allow us to compute effect sizes (e.g., t-values, sample sizes, means, SDs, p-values, Cohen's d, etc.). In general, we are looking for experimental studies that include a direct comparison between exposure to a social media influencer and a control condition (for e.g., neutral control, celebrity, brand-only). We are interested in all research outcomes, including beliefs, attitudes, knowledge, recall, behavioral intent, and behavior. The studies can be within any domain (e.g., marketing, advertising, public health, politics, science). Digital Threats and Criminalizing Journalism

Dear Friends & Colleagues, I thought some of you might find of interest my comments on the incredibly important new proposals by the UK's Home Office which will shut down and criminalize investigative journalism on national security and remove the public interest defence for whistleblowers and leakers as well as journalists who share what they expose. Response to UK Home Office’s Consultation “Legislation to Counter State Threats (Hostile State Activity)” <https://medium.com/@teflpolsoc/response-to-uk-home-offices-consultation-leg…> I made my comments in response to the public consultation and submitted them in July and I am now sharing my thoughts with you on Medium. This will end journalism as we know it in the UK. I sincerely believe it will be counter-productive in respect to these radicalization issues too and has important lessons for other nations trying to respond. It's extremely important that we resist efforts to shut down public scrutiny, please feel free to share the article. Dear Researcher, We (Neil Shah, Jerry Zitao Liu, Lei Li) are co-organizing WSDM Cup 2022 <https://www.wsdm-conference.org/2022/call-for-wsdm-cup-proposals/>, a machine learning competition-style event co-located with the leading WSDM conference (International Conference on Web Search and Data Mining). The conference has high-visibility, and is regularly attended by experts in the field. *New Due date: August 10, 2021* We are looking for competition tasks, and we are e-mailing you in hopes that you may have an task/idea to contribute; competition tasks regularly draw 100-200 teams of experts who dedicate their time to working on and achieving the best results on your task. This is an excellent opportunity to solicit expert feedback and brainpower towards solving your problems, identifying intern and FTE candidates, and building improved collaborations with your organization and academia. Typically, competition tasks are Kaggle-style, offering a clear specification of objective, a dataset (can be anonymized and de-identified appropriately), and a small reward for top-3 winning teams (typically ~$5K total, split across winners). Past tasks have come from amazing partners like Microsoft, Wikimedia, Adobe, ByteDance, Spotify, Baidu and more, on tasks as diverse as fake news classification, user retention prediction, music recommendation, vandalism detection, and knowledge-base completion, and winning teams have received excellent results across the board.
