Prototype Nation offers a transnational analysis of how the promise of democratized innovation and entrepreneurial life has shaped China’s governance and global image. Lindtner reveals how a growing distrust in Western models of progress and development, including Silicon Valley and the tech industry after the financial crisis of 2007–8, shaped the rise of the global maker movement and the vision of China as a “new frontier” of innovation. Lindtner’s investigations draw on more than a decade of research in makerspaces, tech incubators, corporate offices, and factories. She examines how the ideals of the maker movement, to intervene in social and economic structures, served the technopolitical project of prototyping a “new” optimistic, assertive, and global China. In doing so, Lindtner demonstrates that entrepreneurial living influences governance, education, policy, investment, and urban redesign in ways that normalize the persistence of sexism, racism, colonialism, and labor exploitation. Prototype Nation shows that by attending to the bodies and sites that nurture entrepreneurial life, technology can be extricated from the seemingly endless cycle of promise and violence. *About the speaker:* *Silvia Lindtner *(she/her) is Associate Professor at the University of Michigan in the School of Information and Associate Director of the Center for Ethics, Society, and Computing (ESC). She is a founding member of Precarity Lab, a research collective working on various forms of insecurity, vulnerability, and social and cultural exclusion that digital platforms produce, and mediate. She is the co-founder of the China research collective Hacked Matter, dedicated to critically investigating processes of technology innovation, urban design, and production cultures in China. Lindtner's research interests include cultures and politics of technology innovation and entrepreneurship, with a particular focus on the gendered and racialized forms of labor necessary to sustain and incubate technological promise. Lindtner draws from more than ten years of multi-sited ethnographic research, with a particular focus on China's position in the global political economy of technology production. Lindtner’s work contributes to the fields of STS (science and technology studies), cultural and feminist anthropology, China studies, HCI (human computer interaction), global communication studies, science and technology policy, and design. Her research has been awarded support from the US National Science Foundation, IMLS, Intel Labs, Google Anita Borg, and the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation. *About the respondent:* *Dr Luke Heemsbergen* is a Lecturer at Deakin University, Australia, and researches the political relations afforded through our digital choices in the real world. He was previously a Research Fellow at the Melbourne Networked Society Institute, and a ‘Berktern’ at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. His main research interests are based in the (digitally) networked terrain of radical transparency and democratic governing. Recently he’s been thinking about digital artefacts in the real world and physical artefacts from the digital world (from 3D printing to new ways of augmenting ‘reality’). *Dr Leonard Hoon* is a Senior Research Fellow in the Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute, leading the Health Technologies and AI Ethics portfolios for the institute, and is a Chief Investigator with the Australian Research Council Industrial Transformation Hub for Digital Enhanced Living. Leonard leverages his background in software engineering, usability and product management to enable research translation. Call for applications Postdoctoral researcher vacancy Netlab - Internet Studies and Social Media Lab School of Communication, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - UFRJ, Brazil ***** *Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship * *on Misinformation and Disinformation Campaigns at Netlab/UFRJ* *Our Project* Netlab is a research laboratory on Internet Studies and Social Media at the School of Communication (ECO), Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) - Brazil, specialized in Online Disinformation Campaigns. We combine traditional social science methods and computational communication approaches. We understand that research into computational communication requires seamless integration of meaningful theoretical questions and background, powerful statistical tools and efficient computing algorithms. Researchers in our lab are working to unravel the intricate mechanisms behind burgeoning computational communication phenomena by collecting and analyzing online data on an unprecedented scale, bringing new life to old ideas, and new ideas to social life. *Main Research Topics* Netlab is seeking to appoint Post-doctoral Research Fellows to work on the interplay between misinformation, disinformation, news, and social media, with an emphasis on public opinion on at least one of these topics: 1. Civil society and social movements 2. Politics and elections 3. Climate change, land use, and environmental issues 4. Science and health We welcome postdoctoral submissions that further the understanding, development, and application of computational methods in disinformation research. Computational methods include (but are not limited to) methods such as text analysis, topic modeling, social/semantic network analysis, online experiments, machine learning, visual analysis and agent-based modeling and simulations. Computational methods can be applied to “big data” and social media, or online behavior data, but can also be used to provide a more sophisticated understanding of “small data” or for theoretical explorations. *Selection Criteria* The successful candidates must have a completed doctorate degree in any area but with experience in a substantive field of social science, including communication and media studies, sociology, statistics, political science, economy and/or social data science. The ideal candidate must also have familiarity with existing academic work on misinformation, disinformation, public understanding of politics, science and technology, media manipulation and propaganda, news media, online platforms, and digital media. Excellent written, editing, and verbal communication skills in English which demonstrate a potential to write and present at an international level are required. Portuguese and/or Spanish language skills are desirable. A record of published work on misinformation, disinformation and social media are very desirable, as well as a detailed knowledge of existing research on misinformation, public understanding of news, politics, elections, environmental issues and its relation to digital media. *How to Apply?* We have opened three postdoctoral positions. These are full-time, fixed-term appointments with a desired start date as soon as possible and no later than April 2021 for a one-year research fellowship. The individual appointed will be working with other researchers; postdoctoral fellows; Ph.D., master, and undergraduate students; and with the principal investigator behind the project, Professor R. Marie Santini, Head of the Netlab research team. Grant: R$4.100,00 per month (one-year fellow). This is a full-time, one-year position with the option of a second-year extension based on demonstrated performance. Looking for: freelance internet policy researcher (start April)

Hi AoiR, I'm looking for an internet policy researcher to help support part-time (30 to 40 days over a period of three to four months) on an exciting new project exploring the role cities (can) play in preserving privacy in public spaces. This is a joint project between Nesta <https://www.nesta.org.uk/> and the City of Amsterdam. The project would present a good fit for experienced policy researchers, but also current PhD students and early career researchers in academia, advocacy or the public sector. The budget for this work is relatively flexible, and can be adapted depending on the level of experience of the successful candidate. We are looking for someone with demonstrable knowledge of internet policy, particularly around issues of privacy and data protection, with strong writing skills. Candidates are preferably UK or EU based, and need to be available part-time from the start/middle of April. While a lot of decision-making around these issues takes place on the European or national level, we want to understand what cities and regions are currently already doing to preserve the privacy of their residents, and how they can be empowered to potentially do even more. This Special Topic aims to investigate how digital media affordances—such as human-machine and human-human interactivity, multimedia capacities, dynamic visual appeal, playfulness, personalization, real-time immersion, multilinear narrative, and so on—have been and can be used to effectively communicate health and science issues. We would like to go beyond the current discourse on fake news, mis/disinformation and online radicalization, which recognizes the malignant effects of digital media on health and science affairs, to refocus on the positive affordances of digital media—both in direct education (e.g., museums, public demonstrations, school settings) and through the media (e.g., news, film, games)—as communication tools and techniques for health and science topics. The aim of this Research Topic is, therefore, to explore the current state of play, as well as potential future trajectories, of digital narrative and storytelling in the communication of health and science topics. We invite scholarly investigations, including theoretically driven and practice-related research, on any topic relevant to that overall goal. Some potential topics include, but are not limited to: * How can science and health be effectively communicated through both playful and informative digital narrative and storytelling forms? * How can information, education and entertainment be integrated into digital narratives about health and science issues? * How do the socio-technical affordances of digital health and science narrative and storytelling, especially interactivity, affect audience experience, message cohesion, knowledge acquisition, emotional engagement and, ultimately, health/science literacy? * Can digital narrative and storytelling serve as an antidote to digital health and science mis/disinformation and online science denial more broadly, and in what way? * How are interactive narratives currently used for health & science communication and what are the social, economic and technological constraints on their production? See below or visit https://tinyurl.com/CrowdControlSHOT2021. *** CROWD CONTROL Organizer: Scott Kushner, University of Rhode Island Queues, gates, doorways, turnstiles, stanchions, guards, cages, pens, cells, anterooms, hallways, cameras, bottlenecks, streets, signage, velvet ropes, bouncers, bleachers, fences, barriers, ushers: the methods of crowd control are technological interventions. The ways that crowds have been constituted, apprehended, understood are historically, geographically, and culturally contingent. The discourses that differentiate crowds from (and conflate them with) adjacent categories of analysis, such as audiences, mobs, masses, multitudes, are similarly variable across different contexts. The purposes to which crowd control has been put have also changed over time and space, organizing the flows and stases of bodies in order to impose political, social, cultural, and economic logics specific to and co-constitutive of the contexts in which its various technologies are situated. This SHOT session seeks to develop an understanding of technologies used to control crowds of people over time. Participants will present research on historically-situated technological devices, protocols, systems, and infrastructures that modify built and natural environments in order to contain, channel, direct, arrange, expel, disperse, and otherwise direct the movements and stillnesses of human bodies. The significance of this work to the history of technology lies in concentrating discussion about the ways that technological interventions have shaped the spatial dispositions of groups of human bodies in order to sculpt the experiences of those spaces and of the crowds of people those spaces attract. Proposals engaging with any era and geographic context are welcome. The organizer is interested in placing in conversation scholars and audience members working with and curious about a range of materials and methodologies. Potential participants are therefore invited to imagine the notion of crowd control in adventurous manners. Note: A pair of panels had been constituted for SHOT 2020, which was cancelled due to public health concerns. Not all panelists are able to participate in SHOT 2021, so a small number of additional papers will be selected to round out the group. Procedure: Those interested in proposing presentations for potential inclusion in this session should kindly prepare a one-page abstract (500 words maximum) and a one-page short CV (300 words maximum) with current contact information. Games & Gaming (Social and Digital Media) 55th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) January 4-7, 2022, at the Hyatt Regency Maui For the sixth straight year, the Games & Gaming minitrack at HICSS is seeking papers that examine the social aspects of digital gaming. We feature work related to digital games and sociality that covers a variety of methods: qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods papers are welcome, ranging from interviews to big data analyses, as well as theoretical papers looking at digital gaming practices in general. Student authors are welcome! Types of games studied may include mobile, social, free to play, AAA, MMOs, PC, console, multiplayer, and indie games.
