The course addresses autoethnography at various levels, so is certainly suitable for anyone wanting to build self-reflexivity into their practice, or to figure out whether or how they are a participant in their own study, to build a robust autoethnographic perspective yet avoid naval gazing, to build an appreciation for creative arts-based practice while practicing some of its techniques. The course focuses on building participants' ability to conduct autoethnographic reflections through active text and visual production for the PhD thesis. There will be group work with time to experiment with writing, as well as arts-based approaches to autoethnography. This course introduces the ontological, epistemological and ethical premises of autoethnography, provides opportunities for practicing this approach through audio/visual/writing modes. In short, we will work on issues such as: * How can the different autoethnographic approaches help build the researcher's reflections and reflexivity? * What ethical challenges become more salient when engaging in autoethnography practice? * How can the researcher become clear about his or her own involvement in creating, feeling, sensing and understanding research and knowledge processes using autoethnography? * How can one use and defend autoethnographic approaches in more traditional academic disciplines and why might this be an important step to take in one’s own field? * What is the spectrum of theoretical traditions related to autoethnographic methods? * How can autoethnographic genres and media be applied by the individual course participant / researcher in a PhD thesis? About the Professors Annette Markham is Professor of Media and Communication and Co-Director of the Digital Ethnography Research Centre (DERC) at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. She is also Professor MSO at Aarhus University, Denmark (on leave). Annette’s work focuses on identity-making and relational practices in internet-mediated, datafied, and automated cultures saturated by digital technologies. She is a well-known ethnographer and methodologist, particularly around the practice of building innovative and ethical approaches to studying the complexity of digitally-saturated social contexts. She has a long background of using an autoethnographic approach to inquiry practices. Most recently, she devised and co-facilitated a largescale collaboration among 150 researchers across 26 countries to study the lived experience of early COVID lockdowns through autoethnography. Lisbeth is currently researching the arts and health in the "Dancing with Parkinson’s" project, which is a collaboration between Roskilde University, the Danish Parkinson's Association and Tivoli Ballet School, and is funded with a grant from the Velux Foundation, HUMPraxis Programme. Companies like Thomson Reuters and RELX Group (formerly Reed Elsevier), are supplying billions of data points, bits of personal information, updated in real time, to police as they run our library products and resources. Putting surveillance companies under the same corporate umbrellas as our research products raises sticky ethical quandaries. How do we transition the ethics we apply to offline library collections, paper collections and library stacks, to our online research platforms? Can we ensure patron privacy and freedom to research when we rely on data analytics corporations to license digital content on their third-party platforms? These questions don't have easy answers in our current digital library systems. Case study: digital video ad targeting in U.S. state legislative races

Hi folks, I know that many of you have done work around digital political advertising and data-targeting and the issues involved. I thought you might be interested in what a sophisticated current campaign actually looks like on the ground in the U.S., including the very real limitations practitioners face. Last fall, I worked on a project in two battleground states in the U.S. that involved targeted video content and targeted digital video advertising in a swath of state legislative races plus a handful of congressional and local races. The Hometown Project and I used district-specific videos featuring actors, comedians and musicians who grew up in the targeted areas, and we reached priority voters via comprehensive digital ad targeting on Facebook and a programmatic video advertising platform. The project involved targeting from top to bottom, with a last-minute twist because of fundamental limitations in the process. We served 4.6 million ad impressions in total and reached many tens of thousands of U.S. voters. Plus, we got to work with Ernie Hudson, the fourth Ghostbuster! *** Call for Demos, Work in Progress and DC *** 8th International Symposium on End-User Development (IS-EUD 2021): "Democratizing AI Development" July 6-8, 2021, Atlantica Miramare Beach Hotel 4*, Limassol, Cyprus http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/GPListManager2021/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXI… End-user development (EUD) aims at empowering end users to develop and adapt systems at a level of complexity that is adequate to their expertise, practices, and skills. EUD may occur along the entire software lifecycle, with the purpose of making users able to participate in their artifact development, not only at design time, but also during actual use. Originally, EUD was conceived as a more general concept than end-user programming; thus, scholars proposed methods, techniques and tools that allow end users to modify or extend software artifacts, such as spreadsheets, web applications, video games, and mobile applications. In the co-called Internet of Things era, end-user development moved on to address the problem of defining and modifying the behavior of smart environments, including smart objects, pervasive displays, smart homes, smart cities, and so on. Therefore, the term "end-user development" acquired a broader meaning covering approaches, frameworks and socio-technical environments that allow end users to express themselves in crafting digital artifacts that encompass both software and hardware technology. Recent research and technological trends like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, Cyber-Security, Robotics, and Industry 4.0, have contributed to renew the vision of end-user development, by providing tools and platforms that allow end users to harness the power of AI to create solutions involving Computer Vision, Image Processing, Conversational User Interfaces, as well as solutions for smart environments. Such developments lower the threshold for creating AI solutions, and expand the programmer base for such solutions, by extending AI application both for professional and discretionary use. IS-EUD is a bi-annual event for researchers and practitioners with an interdisciplinary approach to EUD, including: Human-Computer Interaction, Software Engineering, Computer Supported Cooperative Work, Human-Work Interaction Design, and related areas. IS-EUD 2021 Theme: Democratizing AI Development The 2021 edition of IS-EUD focuses on EUD for AI-based systems, where end users are called on to become end-user developers of intelligent agents, digital twins, collaborative and social robots. This edition would like to discuss the adoption of EUD in new fields, the proposal of novel EUD paradigms, and the impact of AI-based EUD in terms of user acceptability and appropriation. One of the most interesting topics in human-AI interaction is explainability of AI-based systems: research submissions presenting end- user oriented solutions to this problem will be particularly welcome. Theoretical and empirical work analyzing pros and cons of this new EUD wave, identifying requirements for end-user development of AI and acceptance of related solutions is invited. Software infrastructures and eco- systems supporting the reuse of solutions and the emergence of meta- design practices are of particular interest to this community, linking the challenges relating AI to topics central to the IS-EUD community. The authors of accepted contributions will have the opportunity to give an oral presentation during parallel sessions. Finally, the IS-EUD Doctoral Consortium is intended to bring together PhD students working on theory and application of EUD. We particularly encourage students that are about half-way through their doctoral research to submit doctoral consortium contributions (max 6 pages) describing the topic of their PhD, their approach and a summary of their progress. ACM UMAP 2021 invites Demonstrations and Late-Breaking Results (LBR) papers of innovative UMAP-based systems (including research prototypes). You are encouraged to submit your Demo or LBR by March 26th, 2021. Submission formats For more details, see below! Demonstrations • Max. 3 pages + max. 1 additional page for references • (Required) unpublished page describing how they would present the demo virtually and/or in person • (Optional) video or external material demonstrating the system • Publication in ACM UMAP 2021 Adjunct Proceedings • Presentation as a virtual demo + poster at the conference Late-Breaking Results • Max. 7 pages + max. 2 additional pages for references • (NEW: required) unpublished page with a list of questions the authors aim to get feedback on • Publication in ACM UMAP 2021 Adjunct Proceedings • Presentation as a virtual poster at the conference Submission via https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=acmumap2021 Demonstrations Demonstrations will showcase research prototypes and commercially available products in a dedicated session. Demo submissions must be based on an implemented and tested system that pursues one or more innovative ideas in the interest areas of the conference. Demonstrations are an excellent and exciting way to showcase implementations and to get valuable feedback from the community. Each demo submission must make clear which aspects of the system will be demonstrated, and how these will be demonstrated on-site as well as online. To better identify the value of demos, we also encourage authors to submit a pointer to a screencast (max. 5 minutes on Vimeo or YouTube) or any external material related to the demo (e.g., shared code on GitHub). Descriptions of demonstrations should have a length of max. 3 pages + 1 page of references in the new ACM single-column style. On an extra page (not to be published), submissions should include a specification of the technical requirements for demonstrating the system at UMAP 2021. Given uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, this extra page should also describe if/how the demo can be presented in a virtual setting (e.g. with a video or a live link to the system). Late-Breaking Results Late-Breaking Results (LBR) are research-in-progress that must contain original and unpublished accounts of innovative research ideas, preliminary results, industry showcases, and system prototypes, addressing both the theory and practice of User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization. In addition, papers introducing recently started research projects or summarizing project results are welcome as well. We encourage researchers and practitioners to submit a late-breaking work as it provides a unique opportunity for sharing valuable ideas, eliciting useful feedback on early-stage work, and fostering discussions and collaborations among colleagues. Late-Breaking Results papers have a length of up to 7 pages + 2 pages of references in the new ACM single-column style and will be presented to the conference as (in-person and virtual) posters. On an extra page (not to be published), submissions should include a list of questions that the authors aim to get feedback on during the poster session at UMAP 2021. Submission and Review Process Papers will be reviewed single-blind and do not need to be anonymized before submission. Papers (demo and LBR) must be formatted according to the new workflow for ACM publications. The review process will be single-blind, i.e. authors’ names should be included in the papers. Submissions will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers. They will be assessed based on their originality and novelty, potential contribution to the research field, potential impact in particular use cases, and the usefulness of presented experiences, as well as their overall readability. Papers that exceed the page limits or do not adhere to the formatting guidelines will be returned without review. Publication and Presentation Accepted Demo and Late-Breaking Results papers will be published in the ACM UMAP 2021 Adjunct Proceedings in the ACM Digital Library. All categories will be presented at the poster reception of the conference, in the form of a poster and/or a software demonstration following poster format. This form of presentation will provide presenters with an opportunity to obtain direct feedback about their work from a wide audience during the conference. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the conference and present the paper there. Hello Researchers, I was wondering how people handle offereing a gift card incentive when a project is global in scope? We are planning on offering a $50 USD gift card but then I realized that one cannot use a US amazon or staples card outside of the US (yes, elementary, I realize). I wonder if any of you have offered a cash or cash-like incentive and how you distributed it to out-of-country participants. Thoughts appreciated. Thanks!
