Dear colleagues, --Apologies for cross-posting-- I am delighted to announce that our Critical Legal Studies 2021 stream is open and accepting papers. Best, Aitor Critical Legal Approaches to Data The concept of data resonates in every social, political and economic discussion. It is difficult to imagine a contemporary social problem where that notion is absent. For instance, the health and safety measures aimed to control the Covid-19 pandemic have been influenced by different approaches to data, the rights of data subjects and the way transnational data flows are governed (e.g. tracing apps, biometric data, data flows between countries). Discussions around data are infused with our reliance on technology in every aspect of our daily lives. This results in privacy concerns intersecting with a vast array of areas including fields such as labour, criminal justice and consumer and competition law and policy. Despite the ubiquitous presence of the concept -and its unquestionable importance- we are far from having a clear understanding of it. Data has been defined and regulated at the same time as a commodity, an element of a fundamental right, and as an asset of the commons (to mention some). Paraphrasing Langdon Winner, data is a political artifact, often conceptualised by data thirsty corporations and governments. However, data is adaptable, mutable and polysemic, as it is any other social construction, and as Salomé Viljoen has recently demonstrated, it can be conceptualised in a way that serves the interest of the many and not the few. This stream aims to contribute to the scarce, although relevant body of literature critically scrutinising the legal conceptualisation of data. For that, the stream proposes a diverse panel of critical legal scholars that will approach the study of data from various fields of legal research. The theme of the 2021 conference, “Communities, Technology, and This Moment” aims to bring together the rich knowledge, experience, and practice of Community Informatics, Community Archives, and Development Informatics with a focus on data justice, digital equity, and community informatics response to this moment in history. The 2021 CIRN conference will provide a virtual space to explore how researchers and practitioners ethically collect information, including what happens when community information is intentionally left uncollected, and how information systems can be designed in harmony with communities. This year the CIRN conference will be online, and we propose a series of virtual events consisting of keynotes, presentations, and discussions. We hope that this virtual event covers a wide range of themes that reflect the richness and diversity of the fields of Community Informatics, Community Archives, and Development Informatics. #virtualCIRN. As an outcome, there will be conference proceedings, and selected papers will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Community Informatics in 2022. We also intend, as soon as it is possible to meet physically, to organise a follow up event in Prato Italy at the Monash University Centre. We call for contributions for the following themes, that could be individual or multiple virtual sessions, depending on the response. Sessions will be offered at a range of times in support of participants from different time zones. Themes The conflict or tensions between the individual and collective use of ICT and the implications for design and security issues. What are individual and community rights, responsibilities, and responses to the age of data breaches, manipulation, and social, health, environmental and other crises? Who is left behind from the decision-making processes related to ICTs and information practices and uses? Data justice and digital equity in the age of COVID. What have the past two years (or more) shown us? How can communities have influence upon policy, design, and practice; What will remain of privacy and work-life balance after the last two years of “smart” working? How can we ensure the rights of the digital workforce? How does the pandemic affect different communities differently? Which existent social divisions might be intensified by measures such as lock-downs and social distancing? How can community informatics support people not only to survive but to live and thrive in a time full of uncertainties? Action, agency and technology: Participatory design at this time. The (new/emerging) relationship between face-to-face and action at a (mediated) distance. Has the virtual replaced face-to-face and for what? Has much of our existence in fact become centered around virtual transactions? What has been strengthened? What has been weakened? What happens when people are forced to interact through particular platforms, and the effects on unimpeded communication? What about surveillance? The future of hybrid interactions where some are online, some in person. What are the advantages/disadvantages to hybrid setups, who is marginalized, who is enabled or disabled? Religion, faith, belief. What is the place of religion, faith and belief in the current digital area in the life of communities? How do we deal with what can be materially and socially damaging beliefs, fake news, conspiracy theories and so on? Environmental informatics. Significant environmental actions and decisions are now made at different levels through generating environmental and ecological data and this continues in the COVID-19 era. This is particularly important in the international development context, but in developing countries as well What is the relationship with the community informatics agenda? The virtual program will include live sessions of invited speakers and author presentations, possibly supplemented by online material such as the papers, presentation slides and videos. Aims and Scope Recently, the rapid development of Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, has highlighted a plethora of emergent applications such as infrastructure inspection and surveillance, smart agriculture, seek and rescue, parcel delivery, communications, and post-disaster recovery. In all these applications, UAVs may coexist with ground Internet of Things (IoT) devices. For example, UAVs autonomously perform remote sensing relaying the collected data by the sensors. Moreover, single or multiple UAVs can cooperatively collaborate providing services that require efficient protocols where multiple objectives and constraints should be accounted for. For this workshop, we seek papers that combine the design of algorithms and testbed implementations to develop the theoretical foundations for UAVs as well as the synergies with IoT devices. The numerous emergent applications raised by IoT may require an interdisciplinary approach, involving techniques from algorithm foundations and different areas, such as computer networks, artificial intelligence, concurrent, parallel and distributed computing, security, digital signal, image and sound processing. Dear all Apologies for cross-posting. *** *Call for papers**International Counterathon Workshop**AI, Extreme Speech and Disinformation: Global Challenges and the Way Ahead* 26-27 July 2021 Venue: Centre for Advanced Studies, LMU Munich *Abstract deadline: 20 May 2021* *AI4Dignity,* the European Research Council (ERC) funded project, is hosting a two-day *Counterathon *workshop at LMU Munich, to develop global perspectives around AI and online content moderation. The workshop will create a collaborative coding space where fact checkers from selected countries around the world will enter into a facilitated dialogue with AI developers and academic experts to improve machine learning models to flag and label online extreme speech. The event will also feature thematic panels and public plenaries. Confirmed speakers include Hossein Deerakshan (LSE), Joan Donovan (Harvard), Bharat Ganesh (Groningen), Kiran Garimella (MIT), Duncan Omanga (SSRC), Jonathan Corpus Ong (UMass), Pablo Ortellado (Uni of São Paolo), and Cristina Tardeguilla (Agência Lupa).
