Starting this Friday! The story of sex workers as early adopters and innovators of new technologies who make new frontiers accessible and desirable, and then are regulated, gentrified and criminalized out of them is as old as the story of the United States itself. See where we came from, and how we got from trains and Dictaphones to FOSTA/SESTA, starting this Friday at 12pm EST! Each week we'll take on a new era, and explore the technology advances where sex workers were the un-acknowledged early adopters, only to face regulation, criminalization and eventually, exclusion. This Friday we're talking to the brilliant Gretchen Soderlund and May Jeong about the old west, the turn of the century, the trafficking origins of yore, and the role sex workers played in all of it. There are four in total, spanning 1840 - 2021, every Friday in May from 12-2 EST with 30 minutes of community time at the end to debrief and connect. Tickets are sliding scale/donation down to free. As a key feature of our digital economy and lifestyle, powerful digital platforms have transformed how cultural production is carried forward, how services are delivered, how businesses are established, how talents are identified and developed, and how new forms of entrepreneurial activities are regulated and governed. While platformisation has technological, infrastructural, and economic dimensions, its human dimension highlights individual agency and limitations in the platformisation process. We call for papers that examine individuals and groups who have demonstrated the entrepreneurial spirit, skills, and thinking in taking advantage of Chinese digital networks, systems and platforms to reinvent themselves, change lives, and influence others and society. The entrepreneurial individuals and groups include: new media professionals (e.g. wanghong and self-media content producers); platform managers, engineers, and programmers; e-commerce and social commerce operators, agents, and co-ops; product and service brokers, intermediaries, and consultants; government officials and agencies in managing digital and social media platforms, networks, and R&D. This special issue will provide a new perspective on digital culture, digital economy, and platform studies by focusing on “entrepreneurial” labour, in order to highlight the importance of human agency and creativity, as individuals and communities navigate changes and disruptions in their everyday life brought about by digital platforms and the platformisation of cultural, economic, and knowledge production. Thanks for your consideration + Take care, /C * *Targeted Call for Papers* Internet Popular Culture and (Everyday) Politics: Methodological & Ethical Critiques from Southeast Asia Issue editors: Crystal Abidin & Natalie Pang Outlet: *Journal of Sociotechnical Critique* *Looking for papers grounded in the contexts of Thailand, Vietnam and Timor-Leste* We are in the midst of together a special issue on how scholars conduct research on (everyday) politics in Southeast Asia via networks of internet popular culture, and are looking for three further contributions focused on Thailand, Vietnam, and Timor-Leste. This may include artifacts, networks, groups, and cultures that are specific to Southeast Asian online practices, and that seek to represent, advocate for, provoke, or question how citizens ‘do’ politics online. New generations of scholars who work with digital media are often assumed to be as familiar with internet artifacts, social media platforms, and digital cultures as their research participants. Yet this familiarity does not necessarily grant smooth entrées, flawless interactions, effortless participation and clean-cut conclusions. Our methodological considerations, fieldwork flaws, and the dilemmas when managing contentious data often take a backseat for polished public-facing research articles. In the Southeast Asia region in particular, these behind-the-scenes minutiae of everyday decisions are all the more under-valued when researchers have been taught, conditioned, or cautioned to tiptoe around the OB (out-of-bound) markers implicitly policed by states and governments. The combination of media regimes with limited press freedoms, the frequent employment of sedition acts against citizens, and the need to be strategic to secure state and industry funding for research has also pressured or motivated scholars to calculatively obscure some research anecdotes in favour for a smoother publishing journey and/or posterity. As such, we wish for this issue to serve as a sounding board and collection of reflections on what is really looks like to conduct research on everyday politics online in the Southeast Asian region, while navigating innovative media methods, negotiating inter-disciplinary gatekeeping, demands of publishing in tiered journals and the tensions around legitimizing one's methodological choices. In this issue, we invite scholars to reflect on the methodological and ethical processes and critiques of conducting research on internet popular culture and (everyday) politics in the contexts of Thailand, Vietnam or Timor-Leste, paying special attention to a decolonizing perspective. We invite contributions that critically explore any of the following angles: ● how theoretical concepts and research practice mutually and reflexively inform each other; ● the interpretive flexibility and ethical choices that surrounds the application and usage of ICTs and digital networks to pursue research - for instance, getting interviewees to share their encounters and reflections on laws on fake news in various societies require the deployment of different strategies; ● how the hyphen in ‘socio-technical’ manifests in their own work. This refers to research that moves away from technological deterministic assumptions and conclusions but is also careful not to substitute “one form of determinism (technical) with another (social) (Williams and Edge, 1996)”. Postdoc position in social data science for the analysis of online disinformation at Uppsala University

The Department of Information Technology at Uppsala University has opened a postdoctoral position in social data science for the analysis of online disinformation. The scope of the postdoctoral project is open, and scholars from any discipline who have experience developing new methods or doing computational analysis are welcome to apply. The successful candidate will join the Uppsala University Information Laboratory (http://infolab.it.uu.se) a growing interdisciplinary research group doing basic and applied research on the extraction of knowledge from data at the intersection of data mining, social network analysis and computational social science. The InfoLab is part of a nordic network on the study of online disinformation (https://nordis.research.it.uu.se) and is leading the establishment of a cross-faculty research environment on AI and political communication at Uppsala University. We also plan to open one related position later this year as part of a recently funded EU project. The current opening is part of a joint call for 5 postdoctoral researchers at the Department of Information Technology on sustainability and cybersecurity. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with the other selected scholars. Postdoctoral positions are career-development appointments focused on research, and can include a limited amount of teaching, up to 20%. Moreover, the ongoing pandemic via contact social networks has caused tremendous human life and economic loss around the world, and infodemic is one of the major social impacts that make people difficult to discriminate trustworthy sources, from false and manipulative information sources. Therefore, researchers are increasingly interested in addressing a wide spectrum of challenges in social networks, such as developing social-aware algorithms for communications systems, identifying the topological common structures and information/influence flows, analyzing the social media and evolutions of social graphs, and exploiting location-based and contextual information embedded in mobile social networks to create innovative applications. We would like to invite you to participate in this survey to aid in the planning and organization of this workshop. The date of the workshop and other logistical issues will be announced in due course. *Workshop Description* Internet governance is a complex arrangement of institutions, technical infrastructures and power (DeNardis, 2014). Standard-setting bodies play a crucial role in co-producing the Internet as a network of interoperable networks. As such, Internet governance scholars are exploring standardisation, using a variety of novel and established methods that range from quantitative discourse analysis to ethnography. This workshop aims to showcase the broad range of research methods used by Internet governance scholars from all disciplines to study these standard-setting bodies, such as the IETF, IEEE, W3C, WHATWG, 3GPP, ITU-T, ITU-R.
