Book Release - The Politics of Dating Apps: Gender, Sexuality, and Emergent Publics in Urban China

Hi colleagues, I am very excited about the publication of my first book - The Politics of Dating Apps - with MIT Press and I am even more excited that it is available via Open Access! Here is a short description of the book: In this exploration of dating app culture in China, Lik Sam Chan argues that these popular mobile apps are not merely a platform for personal relationships but also an emerging arena for gender and queer politics. Chan examines the opportunities dating apps present for women's empowerment and men's performances of masculinity, and he links experiences of queer dating app users with their vulnerable position as sexual minorities. He finds that dating apps are both portals to an exciting virtual world of relational possibilities and sites of power dynamics that reflect the heteronormativity and patriarchy of Chinese society. Drawing on in-depth interviews with urban users of such dating apps as Momo, Tantan, Blued, Aloha, Rela, and Lesdo, Chan proposes “networked sexual publics” as a unifying concept to capture the dynamics of dating app culture. Devoting a chapter to each of four publics—straight women, straight men, queer men, and queer women—Chan documents how relationships are shaped and transfigured by this emerging technology. He considers whether dating apps can be a feminist tool; explores straight men's self-presentation on the apps and their interactions with women they meet there; discusses the constant cycle of deleting and installing the same apps seen among queer men; and examines how popular lesbian dating apps may connect queer women to their communities. Finally, Chan maps possible paths for future intersectional, queer, and feminist scholarship on emerging communication technologies. Sometimes, algorithms emerge in the strangest of places, even when you didn't expect to find them. Data & Society just published a new paper by Dan Bouk that I think might interest many tech studies folks in surprising ways so I thought I'd share. "House Arrest" is the history of how the US House of Representatives stopped increasing the size of the House during its apportionment processes. Turns out there was a lot of political investment in curbing the people's body house (see: nefarious intentions) and that the key to solving this problem was to define and mandate an algorithm, and enact a bill in 1929 that would automate this part of government. Call for Chapters: Open Knowledge and Wikimedia Projects in Canada

The year 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of Wikipedia and the *10th anniversary of Wikimedia Canada*, the non-profit, educational association that aims to stimulate contributions to Wikimedia projects in Canada. This double anniversary testifies to the long-term nature of Wikimedia projects and invites us to reflect on the vitality and specificity of the free knowledge movement in Canada. This call for papers aims to collect chapter proposals for a peer-reviewed book to be published in French and English. The manuscript will be submitted for publication in the series Parcours numériques at Les Presses de l'Université de Montréal. *This book aims to provide critical perspectives of the free knowledge movement in Canada since the turn of the millennium. *Who contributes, or does not contribute, to Wikipedia and other projects in the Canadian Wikimedia ecosystem? What uses or misuses are made of Wikimedia platforms by the Canadian public, and more specifically by activists, political parties, teachers, librarians, archivists, the research community, students, artists, journalists, businesses and casual users of all kinds ? Currently, Wikimedia projects in Canada are mainly fed by three linguistic communities (English, French and Atikamekw nehiromowin), which break down into countless individual and collective profiles. We wish to paint a portrait of this vast community, as diverse as it is unknown. We are calling on people who believe in the free culture movement, Wikimedians, the research community, librarians, archivists and people from all walks of life to put together an overview of the specificities, challenges and issues of the Wikimedia movement in Canada. The book will bring together around a dozen texts, each between 3000 and 3500 words. We are particularly interested in texts that offer a synthesized understanding of a project's general scope (Wikipedia, Wikisource, Commons, Wikidata, etc.), centred on the Canadian context as a whole, or on a particular community -- province, nation, region, city, etc. These texts could address, but are not limited to, the following themes: - Scholarly research on the Wikimedia Movement in Canada ; - Wikidata, the Semantic Web and the Canadian context; - Wikimedia projects within GLAMU (galleries, libraries, archives, museums, universities); - The Wikimedia movement and open education in Canada; - History and actors of Wikimedia Canada; - Wikipedia, online health and Covid-19 in Canada ; - Editorial controversies within portals related to Canada in the various language versions of Wikipedia ; - The arts community, Canadian Cities and the Wikimedia projects; - The feminist and LGBTQ+ movements in Canada in Wikimedia projects; - Contributing feedback related to Wikimedia projects; - The use of Wikimedia projects within Indigenous nations; - The reading and consultation habits of Canadian users. The target audience for the book is the Canadian general public, the international Wikimedia community and the research community. Hosted by Dr Aristea Fotopoulou, part of the the seminar Series - ART/DATA/HEALTH: Communicating public health data creatively during the pandemic. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstract With a focus on the first wave of the pandemic, StoryLab, an interdisciplinary Cambridge based research institute (aru) built an online infrastructure to host creative expression in form of multimedia stories from healthcare practitioners. The online archive served as a vehicle to give a voice to health and key workers who have utilised social media platforms, the power of hashtags, letters, art, music and online communication tools to share their inner thoughts, emotions and feelings. Concerns over personal protection equipment (PPE), public safety, the attack on science, mental health issues and moral injury have surfaced through individual stories as images, videos, words, music and poetry filtered through online on social media and dedicated platforms. The next stage involved the capturing personal testimonies from some of the contributors in the form of a co-created documentary, which is a work in progress. This event explores why and how this project came to life, through a joint presentation by Shreepali Patel (Concept and Research Insights), Marques Hardin (data collection and on-line architecture) and Meghan Horvath (reaching and engaging the healthcare communities). It will include film clips from the on-going documentary and links to recent events with our co-creators, healthcare workers based in the USA and UK.
