Hi everyone, We published a new report today that explains how machine learning techniques are used to assess user-generated content online such as images, video, and audio media. It also explains what these automated tools can—and cannot—tell us about multimedia content. The report, /Do You See What I See? DCOSS 2021 Workshops Extended Submission Date May 21st - Online Format Call for Papers https://dcoss.org/workshops/ Due to the pandemic, DCOSS 2021 Workshops will be held in an online manner, without physical attendance. Still, all accepted papers will be included in the IEEE Proceedings as planned, in the same volume with the main event. Reduced registration fees will apply. The Future Internet paradigm, the proliferation of emerging networks and architectures, wireless access technologies and multi-homing smart devices are evolving towards a competitive environment, where users and devices have access to various resources, while their behaviors become strongly interdependent. This fact demands and motivates the development of user-centric resource management and optimization frameworks, which enable user’s self-optimization and autonomy. This vision is further motivated and supported by the convergence of various emerging technologies enabling Cyber-Physical Systems operation, including 5G/B5G technologies, Internet of Things (IoT), Mobile Edge Computing and Software Defined Networking, all targeting flexibility and efficiency. To deal with the involved complexity, and driven by the requirements of autonomy and scalability, distributed resource orchestration approaches appear as a necessity rather than a desire. The REFRESH Workshop aims at to stimulate research on the most novel topics of real-life modeling in 5G networks and beyond. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in new directions of wireless networking in concrete application scenarios and demonstrators in areas such as, but not limited to: mobile edge computing, Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, public safety networks, dynamic spectrum utilization, smart grid communications, wireless power communication, green wireless networks, information-centric wireless networks. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research and development approaches and results, as well as work-in-progress papers. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative solutions or applications for 5G networks and beyond. The postdoc will work with Roberta Sinatra on the topic of Science of Science and Algorithmic fairness. The project will involve the analysis of large-scale datasets, running controlled experiments, and modelling social dynamics in science. This is part of the ‘Real Time Epidemiology’ project (UCL investigator Dr Michael Veale, partners EPFL, ETH Zürich, TU Delft, 3db Technologies) funded by the Fondation Botnar. The COVID-19 pandemic has spurred interest in using sensors, both on existing devices like smartphones, as well as bespoke devices, to support granular, rapid, public health interventions. The Real Time Epidemiology Project has experience of this, having created two protocols (‘DP-3T’ Bluetooth tracing and ‘CrowdNotifier’ QR-code-based COVID exposure risk alerts), versions of which have been widely deployed around the world during the pandemic. Sensor networks are also changing, with new technologies emerging that are more precise (such as Ultra Wide Band, used by Apple’s ‘AirTags’) or longer in range (such as LoRa/Amazon ‘Sidewalk’). At the same time, some desire to make use of data, including from such sensors, for various notions of public benefit, for example through ‘data trusts’, ‘data foundations’ or ‘data altruism’. The societal, technical and legal considerations concerning who gets to use, alter, assemble and dismantle such platform sensing infrastructures are complex. Private companies, such as Apple and Google, control hardware, operating systems and software distribution networks (app stores), through a range of technical and legal means. Their vertical integration can mean that software struggles to make use of sensors in the vast majority of devices they manage without their blessing. Private standard-setting bodies, such as the IETF or the IEEE, have had important roles in shaping this area. Some jurisdictions have tried, or are currently experimenting with, approaches to governing infrastructures (e.g. the EU’s Digital Markets Act). Governments also desire to use these networks in very different ways: some have strong wariness about turning citizens into sensors, others see it as a way to surveil or even optimise their populations. Some have seen private governance of this area, particularly by US technology firms, as limiting abuses of power by governments. Others have seen the practical inability of states to control infrastructures built and maintained by these firms as impinging on varying notions of ‘digital sovereignty’. Either way, all these above activities of regulation and governance have potential extraterritorial and transnational implications, creating a challenging landscape for a coherent and balanced global regime. Policy discussions however centre predominantly on a few countries in the Global North. This is problematic, as attempts to rebalance legitimate decision-making power around the use and management of such infrastructures can hardly be said to do so if that rebalancing is solely within rich countries. The drive to data sharing is supposed to improve service delivery and help boost an innovative digital economy. But what does this mean in practice for public servants and citizens? Three researchers will discuss their research into this topic: - What does "open" actually mean across different government agencies? - How is open data being shared across platforms like Wikidata? - How does data sharing work between different instititions in fields like health? Heather Ford as an Associate Professor at the School of Communication at UTS where she is Head of Discipline for Digital and Social Media. She has a background as an activist for internet rights and free and open source software and content movement. The co-founder of Creative Commons South Africa and former Executive Director of iCommons, she has also worked as a Digital Vision Fellow at Stanford University, a Google Policy Fellow for the Electronic Frontier Initiative, a Fellow for the Software Sustainability Institute in the UK and a University Academic Fellow in Digital Methods at Leeds University. Her current research is focused on the implications of datafication and automation for the representation of knowledge in global contexts. Suneel Jethani is a researcher and lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney. His research centres on embodied technology, datafication and issues of technology governance and design.
