*INVITATION TO PROJECT LAUNCH* You are welcome to attend the formal launch of the Anthropology of Smartphones and Smart Ageing results, at a free virtual event 14.00 London time, on Thursday 26th May. Tickets are available here:- https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/anthropology-of-smartphones-and-smart-ageing… This event marks the publication of the books *The Global Smartphone, Ageing with Smartphones in Ireland, and Ageing with Smartphones in Urban Italy*. As well as the first round of the Anthropology of Smartphones MOOC on the FutureLearn platform. At the launch, you can meet the full team ask them questions and consider contacting them for a fuller discussion about their work. Each of the team has carried out 16 months ethnography which will be the subject of a monograph. As well as research on the use and consequences of smartphones and the changing experience of ageing, most of us are involved in various health projects concerned with the use of smartphones for health. The team are as follows:- Laila Abed Rabho is a Palestinian researcher at the Harry S Truman Institute for the advancement of peace. She worked with Maya researching the Palestinian community of al-Quds. Patrick Awondo Is a lecturer at the University of Yaoundé in Cameroon. He is the author of *Le Sex et ses Doubles* about LGBT people fleeing homophobia in West Africa. His fieldwork was in a district of Yaoundé, Cameroon. Maya de Vries teaches courses at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She worked with Laila researching the Palestinian community of al-Quds. Marilia Duque is a researcher at ESPM, Sao Paulo and author of *Learning from Whatsapp. Best practices for health*. Her fieldsite was a district in Sao Paulo. Pauline Garvey is Associate Professor in Anthropology at Maynooth University Ireland. Her fieldsite was in Dublin, Ireland Laura Haapio-Kirk is a PhD student at University College London. Her fieldsites were in Kyoto and a rural area of Japan. Charlotte Hawkins is a PhD student at University College London. Her fieldsite was with a community in Kampala, Uganda. Daniel Miller is Professor of Anthropology at University College London. His fieldsite was in the region of Dublin, Ireland. Alfonso Otaegui is a lecturer in Anthropology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. An Argentinian, he studied Peruvian migrants in Santiago Chile and older Chileans learning to use smartphones. Shireen Walton is a lecturer at Goldsmith College London. Her research was with migrants in Milan, Italy. Xinyuan Wang is a postdoctoral researcher at University College London. Her fieldsite was a middle-class community in Shanghai, China. This is a reminder to submit your abstracts to the Digital Inclusion, Policy and Research Conference (DIPRC), deadline is next week - 31st May! Below you can find the short version of the call and you can read the full version on the conference website - https://easychair.org/cfp/DIPRC2021: The Digital Inclusion, Policy and Research Conference (DIPRC) Tuesday, September 14 2021 In this third edition of the Digital Inclusion, Policy and Research Conference (DIPRC) 2021, we invite scholars, practitioners and policymakers to talk about their latest work in what many consider as a crucial point for digital inclusion, digital divides and data literacy. Who got left behind and struggled the most during the pandemic? What new digital practices emerged from the pandemic to help people manage their well-being and survival? Did technology interventions such as contact tracing apps actually help manage the pandemic? How did different communities organise to assist each other via digital means? How did different governments and local municipalities respond to digital literacy challenges? How is mainstream media implicated in how we understand what is happening? The conference aims to focus on the recent global developments influenced by the pandemic in research, policy, and practice. Over this short time digital inequalities, digital inclusion and digital literacies have changed in response to global developments. However, key themes have remained important such as: material and financial access; skills and digital literacy; use by citizens and communities; the impact of socio-economic factors; motivation and attitudes; and more recently socio-economic and socio-cultural variations in patterns of usage. Digital inequities therefore have become an important part of broader persistent issues of social equity and justice. For the open sessions, we seek presentations and papers that cover empirical research as well as policy and practice interventions, on topics such as: * Data analysis of levels of digital inclusion/exclusion and engagement. * Case studies of initiatives and programmes. * Case studies of community impact. * Studies of the impacts of digital exclusion and inequalities. * Policy interventions to address digital inequalities. Given that 2020 and 2021 have been dominated by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has itself revealed huge digital inequalities, we also invite papers on: * Disinformation/misinformation and digital literacy during the pandemic. * Studies on the link between misinformation and data literacies. * Government, community and voluntary sector responses to digital literacy needs. * Digital platform use and 'big tech' responses to the pandemic. * Community responses to digital needs due to the pandemic. CFP: NEW GENRE STUDIES (ANTHOLOGY) Jonathan Cohn, Jennifer Moorman, Samantha Noelle Sheppard <mailto:sheppard@cornell.edu> Abstracts/Proposals (300 words) due August 1st Chapters (no longer than 6000 words) due Feb 1st Send abstracts and questions to cohn(a)ualberta.ca Genre profoundly shape the pleasures and disappointments of media spectatorship. Whether watching a film, binging a series, playing a game, surfing the web, or scrolling through social networks, genre shapes our expectations. Yet, genre has not been a central concern of media studies since the 1980s and the early scholarship of the likes of Rick Altman, Thomas Cripps, Carol Clover, Jane Feuer, Vivian Sobchack and Linda Williams. In some areas of media studies (most notably video games and new media), serious discussions of genre are almost non-existent. Where it is present, it is--with some important exceptions--typically eurocentric. Media and genre are often opposed to one another as two discrete ways of categorization and the field has largely sided with media as the more helpful, productive, and critical of the two. Since the 80s, media studies has built itself up by tearing genre studies down. In fetishizing media, our field has overlooked the possibility that often when we say ‘media’, we really mean ‘genre.’ How many arguments over whether or not TV as a medium turns you into a ‘couch potato,’ the Internet makes you active, or VR makes you empathetic could be quickly settled if framed as an effect of particular genres instead? Or consider Lev Manovich’s canonical The Language of New Media, which seeks to point out the similarities between new media and the montage heavy city symphony, Man With a Movie Camera. He ends up having to ignore vast swaths of new media in order to make his comparison work: insodoing, new media becomes a genre. But genre may right now be a far more helpful heuristic for the questions many of us currently ask. The way we engage with a piece may have far more to do with its genre than medium. The way we consider and judge a piece’s depictions of our cultural, economic, and political reality are also shaped first and foremost by genre. While discourses around media are typically interested in defining clear distinctions between media, genre is valued for being a far looser form of categorization that privileges connections, overlaps, and hybridity. Genre is also transmedial and can readily help to show the connections between media. These are just a few of the avenues that a more fulsome discussion of genre could lead us down. Starting from these provocations, we seek to revitalize discussions of genre in media studies by providing a showcase for some of the most exciting work in the area. In this anthology, we ask the question of whether organizing our field around media was a mistake or not. Would we have been able to better confront and consider the many central debates and dead ends of media studies over the last three decades if we had started by centering on genre rather than media, or at least setting them up as equals. What other potential difficulties and problems may have arisen instead? New media had its moment; now it’s time to consider what new genres can do. We are especially seeking papers on the following or similar topics: New Genres across media Non-Western Genres Genres of the dispossessed The culture, politics, and/or economics of genrification Forgotten and misunderstood genres Genre as embodiment and/or interactivity Genres, historicity, and historiography

Dear Future Colleagues and Friends, Short version (to save your time): - You can find the online survey on: http://uwa.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8H2CdN0UzXN71bw - Thank you very much for considering, and helping me with my PhD work - The survey is open from 03 May 2021 to 31 May 2021 The longer version: My name is Yangjinbo Zhang. I am currently pursuing my PhD at the University of Western Australia (UWA) under the supervision of A/Prof Mark Reynolds. My chosen study relates to data storytelling and data visualization. I would very kindly like to invite you to help me and support my work in answering a quick online user-survey that will take around 20 minutes. The survey is part of the user testing that I am currently conducting. The project is about associating digital art and data visualisation to create a new form of digital data storytelling on an interactive 3D platform. In an effort to improve the project, we are looking for people who are interested in trying out the prototype and giving feedback after viewing it. If you choose to participate, you will be invited to do several short memory tests and a survey. Your participation will take approximately 20 mins. Your participation is entirely voluntary, and all of your feedback will be anonymous. A computer or a smart device with keyboard arrow keys is needed to access the Qualtrics online survey.
