However, these technologies lead to several challenges, e.g., privacy concerns, unfairness, and the increase of marginalization. Thus, it is essential that more attention is given on how we design such systems for/with marginalized populations. This workshop will provide a forum to exchange experiences on designing technologies for/with marginalized people and AI/ML driven technologies. We will explore potential tools to support designing AI/ML systems with marginalized people, and develop a design agenda. We use a broad definition of marginalized people that may include, but is not limited to, people of/with low socioeconomic status, disabilities and migration histories. We invite researchers, practitioners and community members interested in the aforementioned topic to submit a 2-4 page position paper. Submissions should critically reflect on current projects and/or present challenges and approaches. Dear colleagues, in the past we presented our impact assessment, the Data Ethics Decision Aid (DEDA) at AoIR conferences, and it is also referenced in the AoIR research ethics guidelines 3.0. We are proud that it is in use at several (local) government organisation in the Netherlands. Finally, we managed to publish the paper Data Ethics Decision Aid (DEDA): A dialogical framework for ethical inquiry of AI and data projects in the Netherlands in Ethics & Information Technology<https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10676-020-09577-5> (open access). It describes how our empirical research into data practices at Dutch municipalities led to developing this process of dialogical case-deliberation. While many other data & AI ethics guidelines provide a normative framework, DEDA facilitates a process that makes values explicit and stimulates value-sensitive design. Documenting this process supports accountability and transparency. For us at Utrecht Data School, DEDA is also a means for participatory observation which gives us intimate insight into organisations, their data projects and how they respond to ethical challenges. Thank you! ----- *Call for Papers: Special Issue of a Journal* *Topic* Autoethnographies of Care: Foregrounding the experiences of early career researchers *Overview* To be a young researcher in the social sciences, especially in media and communication studies, comes with its own set of challenges and learning opportunities. While our identities might lend us some advantage as we conduct research in a fertile field, especially with certain sections of participants, it might also be part of the problem which acts as roadblocks in access, digital divide, equity, reciprocity, and respect. This special issue seeks to present and engage with narratives of early career researchers at different stages of their academic careers: doctoral/postdoctoral students, lecturers, assistant professors, and researchers. These personal narratives will range from talking about the self and surrounding environment to the possibility of looking inward to understand and take the community forward, and from drawing resonance with text to (re)designing mechanisms for academic contemplation. Using autoethnographic accounts of care, or lack thereof, experienced by the scholars featured, their personal narratives will be tied to broader social, cultural, political, and economic contexts of their local realities for reflection on and recommendations for inclusivity such that a richer engagement with the field can be undertaken for newer, nuanced meanings to emerge. To give you a glimpse, a panel we are organising for the International Communication Association (ICA)’s 71st Annual Conference to be held in May 2021 in the main theme session has six of us giving our accounts and experiences as early career scholars in media and communication studies. The first scholar emphasizes the necessity of weaving an element of care in studying gaming cultures in India. He proposes a meta-reflective mechanism for researchers to contemplate on gamers’ ludic practices and experiences such that newer understandings can emerge from the field. The second researcher interrogates the power structures that enforce restrictive practices while demanding invisible labour off of young researchers. The third scholar questions the neoliberal narratives surrounding shifting careers, the isolated experience of archival work, and how to deal with anxieties and vulnerabilities. The fourth paper unravels common threads between the doctoral student’s life and the women in her text as she completes her PhD with a focus on cinema studies. She identifies otherizing and siloing can create a culture of silence to the detriment of women researchers, and that gendered self-care, presentation, representation, and normalization are important. The fifth paper draws on the lived experiences of an international doctoral student as she tried to navigate her field several thousand miles and cultural milieus away from her home. She outlines the perspectives of care she utilized in her work and shares ethical challenges and possible core values for other fellow international students. The last paper is about self-inquiry and how experiences from the field can be tied back to community centred endeavours to care for them. *Submission* We invite early career scholars and researchers in media and communication studies to take an autoethnographic approach to their journeys as doctoral/postdoctoral scholars and early career researchers/academicians and reflect on their experiences within their broader social, cultural, political, economic contexts in their local realities and recommend changes for better care, inclusion, and access. Call for papers: Covid-19 as a Global Crisis - International Journal of Cultural Studies

International Journal of Cultural Studies – Call For Papers Special Issue: Covid-19: The cultural constructions of a global crisis Issue Editors: Myria Georgiou (LSE) and Paul Frosh (Hebrew University of Jerualem) What is the meaning of the coronavirus pandemic as a global crisis? Or, to unpack this somewhat naïve question: what does such a crisis feel, look like and signify to those living through it? How are its legibility, coherence and significance as a ‘crisis’ constructed and performed across highly variable cultural and social contexts? How does its occurrence maintain, amplify or transform cultural practices, representational repertoires, solidarities and power relations? And how can inquiry into something as vast, multifarious and pervasive as the pandemic generate new theory about the cultural construction of ‘crisis’ in our time - particularly since, at the moment of writing, it is still going on? In short, how might we address both the intensely particular manifestations of Covid-19 in different locations, times and populations, and yet grasp its totality as a global phenomenon? Calling the pandemic a ‘crisis’ draws it firmly into the orbit of cultural studies in three primary ways, which can be summarized through three interconnected questions: how is Covid-19 constructed as a crisis? what it is a crisis of? and through what cultural agencies is it produced and reproduced? How is Covid-19 constructed as a crisis? At least one tradition of cultural studies, associated with the work of Stuart Hall, placed notions of ‘crisis’ and ‘the conjuncture’ at the centre of its concerns. A key question here is how to theorize and investigate Covid-19 in relation to these terms. In particular, if modernity as such is understood as a period in which crisis is endemic and ongoing, as a permanent state of affairs where catastrophe and transformation are immanent and always about to occur, what then distinguishes a crisis like Covid-19 as a distinctive irruptive event? If, as Janet Roitman has suggested, the term ‘crisis’ has been inflated to the point of ubiquity in writings about a range of conditions (economic crisis, environmental crisis, political crisis, humanitarian crisis, social crisis, etc.), and ‘is mobilized as the defining category of historical situations, past and present’ (2014:3), then what – compared to all of these other crises - makes Covid-19 distinctively, and exceptionally, critical? And how is such an event experienced, performed, and represented in its exceptional character to the billions of people caught up in it? What is Covid-19 a crisis of? For many people, Covid-19 is a personal crisis of life and death, debilitating illness, and bereavement. For many others, it is a social calamity and source of collective trauma in their communities and cities. And for most, it is a deeply destabilizing condition of work and livelihood insecurity at present and for years to come. Thus, Covid-19 is far more than a large-scale public health emergency. It has exposed the usually unnoticed structures, hierarchies and norms of everyday lifeworlds and socio-political formations at multiple and intersecting scales, from the individual body (which becomes subject to increasingly intensive monitoring), to the social and political body (which becomes subjected to deepening collective surveillance), while also generating new and renewed solidarities across local, national and global spaces. Moreover, Covid-19 appears to constitute a meta-crisis which enables the widespread visibility of other crises and conflicts which were already endemic in different parts of the world: crises of wealth and welfare inequality, scientific expertise, knowledge and truth (the ‘infodemic’), political leadership, racial discrimination, mediation and civility, migration and borders, religious conflict and environmental disaster. It is a crisis of the universality of risk, its inequitable distribution across populations and places, and of our (in)capacity to develop a politics capable of addressing it. It is experienced by and represented to billions of people as a time of immense danger, disruption and potential change, both for their individual lives and for their collective ways of life. Perhaps the question to be addressed is, then: of what is Covid-19 not a crisis? Through what cultural agencies is the crisis produced and reproduced? The catalyzing and transformative potential of pandemics for societies is not historically new. What does appear to be novel about Covid-19 is its combined pervasiveness and extensiveness. Covid-19 is pervasive in that its influence plays out at virtually all scales of life, from individual physical interactions and personal mobility, to relations within and between social and cultural groups, states, national economies, the activities of transnational entities such as corporations and international organizations, as well as through observable shifts in the environmental impact of human behaviour. The crisis is extensive not only in that it is experienced, performed and represented as a variable local phenomenon in virtually every humanly inhabited part of the world, but is also widely depicted in these places as global, as something affecting everyone, no matter where they live, at this very time. Media are central to this simultaneous pervasiveness and extensiveness, not only because they represent the crisis to large audiences around the world, but also because contemporary media technologies are profoundly and almost ubiquitously embedded into the social world at small and large scales, from the intimate everyday lives of individuals to global infrastructures (Couldry and Hepp, 2017). Covid-19 visibly demonstrates the existential stakes of this media pervasiveness and extensiveness, particularly during ‘lockdowns’, through the sudden substitution of physical co-presence with mediated interaction and digital intimacy and solidarity via digital screens. Hence part of the pandemic’s cultural significance is as a widely shared and represented experience of mediated relations in extremis: of technologized ‘intimacy at a distance’ and digitized ‘solidarity in proximity’ becoming paradoxically obligatory conditions for much social life and cultural activity (especially across cities of the Global North). The crisis, then, generates a historically contingent but powerful affinity between the pandemic, on the one hand, and the primary mechanisms of its cultural mediation. These questions and their elaboration only really begin to set the scene for thinking about Covid-19 as a global crisis. In this special issue we invite substantial contributions (5,000-7,000 words) that engage with ‘the crisis’ from perspectives connected to cultural studies, broadly speaking, and that take transnational relations and dynamics as their principal frames of reference. Posters & Demos Chairs · Dominik Bork, TU Wien, Austria · Giovanni Meroni, Politecnico di Milano, Italy RESEARCH PROJECTS @RCIS RCIS 2021 features a track entirely devoted to presenting future or ongoing research projects (e.g., H2020 or ERC projects, national grants) in the context of information science. This track features a good opportunity for presenters to get feedback before submitting research project or to disseminate the intermediate results of their projects, and for participants to get an updated view of innovative ongoing research while getting in touch with potential research partners. The Research Projects @RCIS Track follows a two-step publication process. Firstly, the authors should submit a 2 pages paper summarizing the objectives of the project and relevant results. Each submission will be peer reviewed on the relevance of the submitted paper in the context of RCIS. If the paper is accepted, the authors will have to register to the conference in order to present their work as a poster at the "Research Projects @ RCIS" session at RCIS. A discussant system will be organized to ensure proper feedback and discussions about the projects. Furthermore, the accepted 2 pages paper will be published in the conference proceedings to be published by Springer in the LNBIP series. However, we discourage commercial or sales-oriented tutorials. Potential presenters should keep in mind that there might be a varied audience, including novice graduate students, seasoned practitioners, and specialised researchers. Tutorial speakers should be prepared to cope with this diversity. The conference has specific slots for tutorials. They will be organised in sessions of 90 minutes with a free format. Tutorials run in parallel with other conference tracks, and participation in the tutorials is included in the attendees' conference fee. We invite proposals for tutorials that may address one or more of the listed topics below, although authors should not feel limited by them. A 2-page summary of the tutorials that end up being accepted and delivered will be published in the conference proceedings, which will be published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing series.
