Dear AoIRists, as many of you know, one of the central additions to the AoIR Internet Research Ethics 3.0 was a focus on protecting the researchers, as catalyzed by phenomena such as #Gamergate as well as increasing research on violent extremists, etc. Thanks to the help of several colleagues - Leonie Tanczer, Lindsay Blackwell, Katherine Lo, Alice Marwick, and Fiona Martin, among others - we were able to gather some helpful resources in the document as well as offer Keith Douglas' very helpful list of suggestions and discussion on "Operational Security: Central Considerations" (7.1, pp. 78ff.) So far as I can gather, threats to researcher safety have only abounded since; at the same time, I've been asked to offer a small workshop (remotely) on Researcher Safety at Umeå University in February: so ... 1) are there any additional resources people would recommend, especially to early career stage researchers, useful / helpful / inspiring in helping take whatever steps we can to protect ourselves? 2) are there additional examples that might be useful to refer to as highlighting / foregrounding the possible risks and / or ways to counter them? The researcher will contribute to the European Research Council- funded project, ConflictNet, and specifically to a research stream that examines how social media and new technologies are changing everyday politics in areas where the state has limited reach in Africa. This project is led by Nicole Stremlau. This is an exciting opportunity to join an international team working closely with universities in Africa. The position involves field research (dependent on the evolving situation with COVID19); collaborating with research assistants; developing research frameworks; overseeing and contributing to data collection; analysis and writing up of research findings. The successful applicant will hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in the social sciences including African studies, law, anthropology, politics; have research experience, preferably in Eastern Africa; publications in the field of African studies, internet/media studies, justice and security, or governance; experience with contributing ideas for new research projects particularly related to governance, law, and new technologies in Africa. Dear all, I'm excited to share that my colleagues Noopur Raval and Amba Kak today launched a new project: A New AI Lexicon: Responses and Challenges to the Critical AI Discourse <https://medium.com/a-new-ai-lexicon/a-new-ai-lexicon-responses-and-challeng…>. The project aims to expand and revise critical AI thinking by attending to global racial histories, diverse queer movements, struggles of caste and tribe communities, and their specific place-based demands especially outside of the West. Fostering an inclusive and just online environment is a persistent challenge: Web technologies can hinder or promote equity, and can exacerbate intersectional disadvantages. In recent years, this challenge has been amplified by the increasing prevalence of artificial intelligence and the automation of Web-based tasks as well as ongoing divides in Web access, use, and skill. The theme for WebSci 2021, Globalisation, Inclusion and the Web in the Context of COVID, calls attention to these challenges, particularly in light of the ongoing global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Web Science is an interdisciplinary field dedicated to understanding the complex and multiple impacts of the Web on society, and vice versa. As such, the field of Web Science is particularly well situated to address these pressing issues. Accepted papers will be formatted with the sigconf style at camera-ready time All contributions will be judged by the Program Committee upon rigorous peer review standards for quality and fit to the conference, by at least three referees. We will adopt a single-blind review process. Do not anonymize your submissions. Submissions without authorship information will be desk-rejected without review. For authors who wish to opt-out of publication proceedings, this option will be made available upon acceptance. This will encourage the participation of researchers from the social sciences that prefer to publish their work as journal articles. All authors of accepted papers (including those who opt out of proceedings) are expected to present their work (virtually) at the conference. In 2020, the Web Science conference registration costs were kept low, and the intention is to continue this for Web Science 2021.
