The British Sociological Association is proud to be hosting a free online seminar titled 'sex and social media, a conversation with Dr Katrin Tiidenberg and Dr Emily van der Nagel' on Thursday 3rd December, 9:00-9:45 GMT. To register for the event, please visit: https://forms.gle/jPzMcaHExZSdHLKS7 This talk brings together Dr Katrin Tiidenberg and Dr Emily van der Nagel to discuss their recent book 'Sex and Social Media' published under Emerald Publishing's influential 'Society Now' series. The book explores the nuances of modern sexual practices as they intertwine with, on, in, through, and despite social media. This accessible, entertaining, and thought-provoking text opens up discussions of community, identity, practice and platforms at the intersection of sex and digital technology. Dr Katrin Tiidenberg in an Associate Professor of Social Media and Visual Culture at the Baltic Film, Media, Arts, and Communication School of Tallinn University, Estonia. She is the author of 'Selfies: why we love (and hate) them' and serves on the Executive Board of the Association of Internet Researchers and the Estonian Young Academy of Sciences. Dr Emily van der Nagel is a Lecturer in Social Media in the School of Media, Film, and Journalism at Monash University, Australia. She has been published in the M/C Journal: A Journal of Media and Culture, Media International Australia, Continuum: Journal of Media and Cultural Studies, Internet Histories, and First Monday. It is truly a rare occasion to bring together two researchers from Australia and Estonia. This digital format offers the opportunity to hear from both authors together in conversation. The discussion will be facilitated by Dr Harry T Dyer, Lecturer in Education at the University of East Anglia. You will be part of the POPNET platform, and your position is hosted by the University of Amsterdam. As an ideal candidate for this position, you find yourself at home in the international computational social science research community. You have a well-developed skillset in scientific programming and an affinity with network analysis in particular. You are able to work with very large data and have the creativity and curiosity to develop new network measures and statistics. You are keenly aware of the ethical issues related to using large scale social register data and want to contribute to a responsible scholarly practice on big data analytics. You may have a disciplinary background in either social sciences, humanities or computational sciences, but you strongly believe in interdisciplinary collaboration. POPNET-SSH is a novel digital infrastructure and research community with the aim of unlocking longitudinal social network data on the entire population of the Netherlands for academic research purposes. A first-of-a-kind research infrastructure tailored in terms of hard- and software specifically for large-scale social network analysis will be developed. The available data includes the complete social network (at population-scale) of the 17 million inhabitants of Netherlands, including all family, neighborhood, school and work relations, as well as demographic information. From this, actionable insights into key issues including segregation, substantive social change, and UN sustainable development goals such as reducing inequality can be obtained. But what are its causes, its true effects, and what can and should we do about it? In this seminar, three experts examine trolling from different perspectives and across cultures (with a focus on Australia and China): - How does trolling behaviour play out in different environments? - What drives trolls from a psychological perspective? - How does trolling relate to freedom of speech issues? Evita March obtained her PhD in evolutionary and social psychology and is currently employed as a senior lecturer and researcher at Federation University Australia. Evita’s research interests include interpersonal relationships, cyberpsychology, and personality. In particular, Evita is interested in how people behave online, and she has explored a range of online behaviours including cyberbullying, cyberstalking, online dating, trolling, and self-presentation. Huixin Tian is a PhD student in Information Science, Department of Information and Library Science, Indiana University Bloomington. She received a bachelor’s degree in archaeology from Peking University, and a master’s degree in Anthropology from Indiana University Bloomington. Her research interests include materiality of digital mediation, virtuality and work, immigrant labor in the global information industry, and innovation industry. Her dissertation project will focus on the community of Chinese immigrant programmers in the United States. Dr. Jay Daniel Thompson is a Lecturer in Professional Communication in the School of Media and Communication at RMIT University. He is researching the fraught relationship between trolling and freedom of speech. Dr. Thompson has also published extensively on the politics and ethics of media controversy. Call for visual essays - Special edition of Digital Culture and Education exploring 'shelfies'

SPECIAL EDITION - VISUALISING THE SHELFIE MOVEMENT: DOCUMENTING DIGITAL MATERIALITIES Edited by Yasemine Allsop, Natalia Kucirkova, Jennifer Rowsell, Ekaterina Rzyankina, and Sumin Zhao Covid-19 has transformed the way we work. With domestic space now positioned up front and centre in daily working life, the humble home bookshelf has been transformed into a professional platform. Heightened online time has invited novel habits and trends such as taking, sharing and appreciating shelfies. This special issue invites visual essays on ideologies, ontologies, and epistemologies circulating in shelfies within formal and informal contexts. Shelfies throw into relief ways of being, thinking, and valuing (or not) spaces. What objects are foregrounded and backgrounded in shelfies? What is visible and invisible? In what ways are shelfies political, affective, hermeneutic, and contested? Visual responses to the shelfie movement have the potential of opening up a new lens for conducting and interpreting research. In addition, visual articles give (more) room to present and theorise people's relationships with the liminal spaces we move in and out of during and post-COVID. We invite visual essays that explore responses to shelfies as both trend and lived practice. Some ideas for possible topics include: The form and function of shelfies; Shelfies as cultural, social, and economic signifiers; The semiotics of shelfies; Shelfies as affect; Shelfies as posthuman; Shelfies and the home-work dichotomy; Shelfies as liminal spaces; The politics of shelfies; Shelfies and social media; Shelfies and wellbeing; Shelfies and identity; The presentation of shelf in everyday life; The shelf life of shelfies; Blurring, editing, and augmenting shelfies; The curation of shelfies; Online and offline shelfies; and, The post-COVID legacy of shelfies. While theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches continue to diversify in these new normal times, we invite scholars to use visuals and words in combination in order to unpack the multimodal dynamism of the shelfie. These are just a few of the sound technologies that have framed our experience of listening since the 19th century until the present day. And while audio transmission and recording processes have increasingly moved from analogue to digital systems, the cross-disciplinary nature of sound technologies remains. Frequently dependent on the technical expertise of audio engineers, such technologies heavily shape the media industries and, indeed, our daily lives. This event will bring together a diverse panel of experts to discuss their experiences of employing sound technologies in creative ways: *Enda Bates*, deputy director of Trinity’s Music and Media Technologies programme, who will discuss his use of spatialized audio in 360-degree music videos; *Zeynep Bulut* (Queen's University Belfast) whose ‘Map A Voice’ sound art project included the re-assembling of voices using an auto-composer code; *Mattia Cobianchi* (Goldsmiths University and acoustic engineer at Bowers & Wilkins) on his historical sound project ‘London Street Noises’; and *Neasa Ní Chiarain*, from Trinity’s Phonetics & Speech Laboratory, who will discuss the ABAIR.ie Irish language learning website, and the development of synthesized voices for Irish. La plupart des pays disposent de certains financements publics sous forme de fonds de service / d'accès universels ou d'autres où les télécommunications commerciales sont censées subventionner les zones de défaillance du marché. Dans de nombreux cas, ces fonds se sont accumulés inutilisés, et dans d'autres, ils ont été mal utilisés. La capacité technique du personnel de gestion des fonds est aussi importante que leur degré de contact avec la situation sur le terrain. Les réseaux communautaires (RCs), pour leur part, ignorent souvent l'existence de ces fonds.
