Call for Visiting Research Fellows 2021/22 – Department for Media and Communication Studies Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden Deadline 15 January 2021 The Department for Media and Communication Studies at Södertörn University offers a thriving and multidisciplinary research environment with a particular focus on contemporary datafied and media-saturated societies from a critical-cultural and often historical perspective. The research at the department shares a particular focus on the Baltic and East European region. The department is based at the School of Culture and Education and is a member of the Postgraduate School for Critical Cultural Theory. The fellows will each receive a one-time scholarship of 20.000 SEK contributing to travel and accommodation. The fellows can choose the length and timing of their stay during the academic year 2021-22 but should stay at least one month. Fellows are expected to present their current work during one higher seminar at the department. Södertörn University has a number of guest research apartments close to campus and we are happy to put fellows in touch with the housing unit at the university. However, we are not able to assist further in finding housing in Stockholm. Call For Chapters: A Media Anthropology of India

A MEDIA ANTHROPOLOGY OF INDIA CALL FOR CHAPTERS - Preeti Raghunath and Haripriya Narasimhan CONCEPT NOTE The intertwining of Communication and Media Studies, and the discipline ofAnthropology is not new, in the Indian context. Arjun Appadurai’s (1990) considered takes on global communication flows and mediascapes, Purnima Mankekar’s (1999) landmark work on screen cultures, and the steady engagement of anthropologists like Binod C. Agrawal (1985) in Communication and Media Studies, are some instances of efforts at bringing the two subject areas to influence each other. The growing number of ethnographies in Communication and Media Studies showcase the influence of Anthropology’s methodological and epistemological offerings to study various media-related phenomena. Research on media and cultures is underway in various departments of Cultural Studies and Film Studies, in the country and outside. Similarly, the popularity of digital ethnography, anthropology of popular culture and development, are areas that have caught Anthropology's fancy. Visual Anthropology has emerged as a distinct field within Anthropology, while departments of Sociology carry out ethnographic work on aspects of Communication and Media Studies. These disparate engagements across diverse disciplinary frameworks purport a call for a unification of these efforts. The lack of a reflexive formulation of Media Anthropology as a distinct sub-discipline is strikingly evident., This proposed edited volume on Media Anthropology is a call to recognize, and conceptualize such a sub-discipline in and on India, an area that seems to warrant careful attention in its own right. It is in this context that we seek to lay out the genealogy of such a body of work, take cognizance of the ‘practice’ turn in Communication and Anthropology alike, contend with technology’s current multiple offerings, and provide insights from decolonial and non-Western perspectives. We ask a range of questions: What are the key works that would feature in a genealogy of a Media Anthropology of India? Can one conceptualize such a sub- discipline as comprising only ethnographic work, or do there exist other methodological and epistemological inputs that could go into its formulation? Is media synonymous with technology and related cultures? On a related note, how would such a sub-discipline contend with accusations of technological determinism and evolutionary undertones? How does the ‘practice’ turn in Communication and Media Studies that seeks to go beyond media-centrism (Couldry, 2004; Budka, 2020) propel human-centric work? What are the politics of the digital turn as seen through empirical realities in India? Finally, what does Media Anthropology of India have to offer in terms of critical perspectives and for the current decolonial turn that the social sciences are contending with? [image: page1image26040] [image: page1image26216] In a bid to answer these questions, we propose a set of themes that are not exhaustive by any means: Ø Conceptualising a Media Anthropology of India Ø Genealogical accounts and reviews of media anthropology research in/on India Ø Methodological interventions, including but not limited to multi-modal methods, autoethnographies, policy ethnography, design ethnography and the like Ø Media histories and historiographies, and their linkages to the anthropological Ø Anthropological lenses on media, popular and tech cultures, including but not limited to the study of newsrooms, cinema, AI Ø Accounts of Praxis, drawing on precarities and informality of labour Ø Studies of identities and marginalities of various kinds, also enabled by the recognition of intersectionalities Ø Encountering the Transnational and Global Ø Infrastructures and the Urban Ø Capturing the Datafication of human lives that is currently underway Please email your abstracts to mediaanthrobook(a)gmail.com, by November 10, 2020. The chapters themselves could be written in diverse formats like reflexive essays, commentaries, thick ethnographies, interviews and beyond, facilitating a range of inquiries into the sub-discipline. Visuals by https://whateverworks.biz/ to follow. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Geomedia 2021 – Off the Grid CALL FOR PAPERS: The 4th International Geomedia Conference Siegen, Germany, 5-8 May 2021 The phrase “off the grid” is commonly understood to refer to the voluntary decoupling from established infrastructure networks such as electricity, water or gas supply. The implication is one of material independence and a self-sufficient lifestyle. Going “off the grid” means making yourself invisible by rebuking the social and technological structures that normally organize our lives. It is entering, or returning to, uncharted territory. The grid from which you disappear is often imagined like a web that we are woven into, at once providing security – of cultural connectivity, opportunities to work, or societal participation – while also limiting individual, political or technological agency. The grid also speaks to the geographic coordinate system, an all-encompassing global structure which makes it possible to accurately locate any point on earth. This unified grid represents a dominant ordering principle for everything “locatable”. It is part of the technological infrastructure of many platforms, services and applications which fall under the definition of geomedia, most prominently the Global Positioning System (GPS). In this regard, “off the grid” is a move away from such Cartesian notions of space towards a situated relational account of (quotidian) practices carried out with, through, or in relation to, geomedia. Going off the grid has also been seen as a form of renunciation of the conveniences of the late capitalist (media) world in order to lead a supposedly slower, less stressful and eventually less superficial life – as inspired by the transcendentalism of the likes of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. But with so many people relying on the grid for purposes of work and entertainment in recent times, what does this mean for our relation to geomedia? What does going off the grid look like now? This presupposes, of course, that there is ipso facto a grid – an infrastructure – which one can connect to freely at any time. But a great number of people do not get to choose to decouple from the grid – a fact that speaks to questions of access to the socio-material infrastructures underpinning geomedia and associated communities and practices. Arguably, practices of surveillance and countersurveillance concern the implicit or even involuntary participation in corresponding infrastructures. Here, optimization for a range of tasks and activities routinely involves a certain kind of surveillance; a default setting in the running of all kinds of media platforms used for navigation, video streaming or online gaming. In this, surveillance is wrapped up with profit-seeking practices, and the extraction of value from the ‘data fumes’ of platform users, who enter a form of “cooperation without consensus” as they stream movies, hire taxis, host videoconferences, ride public transport, or go on dates. In these various iterations, surveillance might look different, and/or be practiced in distinct ways to traditional forms of state or corporate surveillance, increasingly dependent on technological protocols and standards that not only underpin the grid but also govern our use of geomedia. One consequence is that the relation between private and public spheres is transformed, and introduces new questions of governance, exploitation and marginalization. It is of crucial importance, who is online, and who is offline might as well not exist. Yet these optimization processes are also subject to countermeasures that constitute new modes of existence – from anonymous accounts and the use of VPNs, to location spoofing, and other tricks and techniques to hide, erase, or obfuscate user activity and location. Yet the grid is not all-encompassing, nor all-powerful. Whilst countersurveillance efforts resist, fight back and oppose, alternative geomedia projects imagine the grid differently – sometimes even plotting its demise. From community broadband initiatives, to independent media organizations, post-capitalist streaming platforms, and citizen science projects; there is a continued, concerted effort to build alternatives to state-based, or company-owned geomedia, operating at various scales from the hyper-local to the global. Through these efforts, organizers and participants question the foundations of our collective social and technological infrastructures, redefining what it is to care, share, distribute, cultivate or reallocate funds, resources, opportunities and ideas – bringing new geomedia, and new imaginaries of hope (or perhaps fear), into existence. Hybrid discussion-based courses: how to encourage discussion between in-person & digital participants?

Hi all, As many of you are facing (and probably mastered!), I will have a hybrid master/PhD discussion-based course. For those that have mastered encouraging participation and discussion between in-person and digital participants, care to share your knowledge? 😊 The course will have approximately 20 in-person students, and 2-4 attending via Zoom. Students will lead discussion in pairs for 2 of 8 course meetings, with each course meeting covering a different topic within Big Data Ethics. Last year, we ran the course in a classroom of 30 students, all seated at an “O” shaped arrangement of tables, where everyone was able to face and view each student and lecturer in the room. Students had name cards in front of them, and we used a discussion prompt where each had 3 paperclips, using 1 every time they spoke, and needing to use all paperclips by the end of the course meeting (this encouraged conversation from those usually a bit inhibited, and lessened “taking over” the conversation by our more dominant course attendees).
