Dear MAB-Community, Autumn/Spring is here and in the spirit of a new season cycle we are glad to announce the relaunch of two of our calls: Papers and MAB Awards! Find out more below. As you know, we have set new dates for MAB20, 28 June - 2 July, 2021, and we are working towards it while also making contingency plans in order to best adapt to the uncertainties of current times. The concept of the proposed project is about adding fantasy in one’s journey while visiting the park and making it a fanciful experience. To accomplish that the artwork uses technology to evoke, in a cheerful and metaphoric way, feelings of acceptance, belonging and self-stem. Franco is based in Barcelona, and for the past few years, has created a prolific portfolio of new media artworks. Most of her works were developed via grants, prizes, and commissions, and have been exhibited in public spaces, museums and galleries worldwide. Joseph writes frequently on media and internet issues and is the co-author of the New York Times bestseller News for All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media. He is the 2015 recipient of the Everett C. Parker Award, which recognizes an individual whose work embodies the principles and values of the public interest. Before joining Free Press, Joseph worked as deputy director of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and was a journalist for several years. Angèle Christin is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at Stanford University. She studies how algorithms and analytics transform professional values, expertise, and work practices. Her book, Metrics at Work: Journalism and the Contested Meaning of Algorithms (Princeton University Press, 2020) focuses on the case of web journalism, analyzing the growing importance of audience data in web newsrooms in the U.S. and France. Drawing on ethnographic methods, Angèle shows how American and French journalists make sense of traffic numbers in different ways, which in turn has distinct effects on the production of news in the two countries. Angèle is currently a Visiting Researcher with the Social Media Collective at Microsoft Research New England. She is an affiliate at Data & Society Research Institute.

Call for Participation: Live Streaming Symposium-Communities of Play Online April 17-18, 2021 The Digital Cultures Collaboratory in the Center for 21st Century Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is a research group comprising graduate students, library staff, and faculty. Since 2017 this group has operated Serious Play<https://uwm.edu/c21/research/c21-collaboratory/current-collaboratory-groups…>, a channel on the Twitch live streaming network devoted to gameplay and reflective commentary. In April 2021, we are hosting a symposium that celebrates communities of play created and maintained through streaming. All presentations must be pre-recorded, but we also encourage live presentation. We invite symposium presentations that consider live streaming across its numerous applications. Teachers, critics, and commentators have been using live-streaming technologies since their inception to reflect on games, play and culture. Similarly, a complex network of individual or collaborative streamers and eSports organizations use live streaming as a form of broadcasting. Even more broadly, as we all face a global pandemic that prohibits us from sharing physical space, virtual environments and digital live communication have kept communities connected. As we shift into increasingly online or distant labor and communication, live streaming has become a hub for sharing, generating, and sustaining cultures of play and performance. With this wide potential for critical discourse about live streaming in mind, the Digital Cultures Collaboratory is certain of the importance of this event, which will be held online April 17-18. The Symposium will feature presentations of approximately 40 minutes using Twitch or a similarly accessible platform to combine the live streaming of gameplay or other performative activities with commentary, reflection, or instruction. Presentations must be recorded and may also be performed live at the event. They may involve multiple participants. We will consider a wide range of possibilities but particularly encourage proposals that explore live streaming in contexts such as: * Building and sustaining communities * Responding to regional and global crises * Reaching out to communities not privileged in academia * Transforming traditional academic and political institutions * Developing and intervening in popular culture * Emerging pedagogies * Engaging in critical discourse of and through play * Popularizing and encouraging political action * Questioning whether live streaming practices constitute safe spaces To apply, send a description of your project of approximately 750 words to seriousplayuwm(a)gmail.com with the subject “SYMPOSIUM ABSTRACT – First Name Last Name”. Call for Papers Sexual Datafication Deadline for Abstracts of 500 words: October 30th 2020 This proposal for a special issue in the journal of Big Data & Society explores the concept of sexual datafication: the relationship between big data and the development of gender and sexuality in the twenty-first century (Saunders, 2020). Urgent contemporary research in fields such as digital humanities, sociology and public health have examined the socio-political impact and ethical implications of big data (Kitchin 2013; Zwitter 2014; Mittelstadt and Floridi 2015; Daniels, Gregory and Cottom 2017; Snyder and Zhou 2019). This special issue will be the first to focus on how big data collection - conducted by governments, corporations and medical institutions - takes place specifically in relation to the gendered and sexual body. It asks questions regarding, for example, how big data is deployed in international philanthropic initiatives fighting for women’s human rights; the problems and value of big data in understanding particular health needs of LGBTQ+ communities; and the new ways in which ‘sex tech’ and dating and fertility applications gather biomedical and socio-sexual information on populations. This special issue seeks to answer questions about how big data intersects with gender and sexuality from an international perspective, critically engaging with the varied objectives and ethical ramifications of big data collection taking place in different continents and cultures. The overarching goal of this special issue is to explore the most significant ways in which sexual datafication has become central to the power relations and biopolitics of the gendered body in the digital age. It also asserts the fundamentally interdisciplinary nature of sexual datafication as a new area of study, and therefore invites scholars from disciplines including the Medical Humanities, (Digital) Sociology, Disability Studies, Digital Humanities, Science and Technology Studies, Political Economics, Gender Studies, and Cultural and Media Studies. The project will employ media and cultural studies approaches, and computational methods developed by the research team. You will have the opportunity to develop skills in a combination of humanities and computational approaches to digital media, using critical and qualitative approaches alongside novel machine vision and data visualisation techniques. The project will focus on a particular aspect of Instagram's participatory culture, this might relate to food, lifestyle sport, music or another case you are interested in. An objective of the project will be to explore the intersections between Instagram's everyday cultures and the classification of those cultures by machine vision systems. The project will be part of a larger effort to develop critical approaches to understanding the interplay between machine learning and everyday life in digital cultures. A working knowledge of media, communication and cultural studies approaches to digital media platforms would be of benefit to someone working on this project. Special issue of the Popular Culture Studies Journal: Serious Play

The Digital Cultures Collaboratory in the Center for 21st Century Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is a research group comprising graduate students, library staff, and faculty. Since 2017 this group has operated Serious Play, a channel on the Twitch live streaming network devoted to gameplay and reflective commentary. In April 2021, the Collaboratory will organize a Live Streaming Symposium that challenges participants to make live presentations using Twitch or a similar platform, involving simultaneous gameplay and reflective, critical, or instructional commentary. We are proposing a special issue of the Popular Culture Studies Journal (PCSJ) titled “Serious Play: Legitimizing Live Streaming as Popular Culture.” This issue will explore the live digital streaming of gameplay (analog or digital) as well as other forms of active performance. The articles and texts will consider the topics of live streaming, pedagogy and performance, virtual environments, and related subjects, and they will all read live streaming as a legitimate vehicle for popular culture. The issue will also showcase recorded video of some or all of the five to seven presentations from the Collaboratory’s digital symposium (to be held in October 2021) alongside articles by members of the Collaboratory that place this work in context of changes in the infrastructure and social organization of higher education. The issue would also include reviews of relevant media pieces, streams, performances, and books. We are interested in examples from leading streaming platforms like Twitch, and we interpret live streaming broadly and do not exclude other possibilities that consider live streaming as a legitimate avenue of popular culture. Potential subjects might include: * Ethnographies of live streaming * Live streaming and “the future of broadcasting” (as T.L. Taylor writes in Watch Me Play) * Forms of streaming practice * Intersections of other pop culture media and live streaming * Live streaming in response to global crises * Discussions of how live streaming can build, maintain, or hinder communities * Live streaming in education as pop culture and pedagogy * Reflections on streaming and online communities * Live streaming and the archive * Political economy of streaming platforms * Live streaming and e-sports * Let’s plays, YouTube, and popular culture * Interactions of social media and play While not required, we encourage submissions that include video or hybridize print with other media. This could be a supplementary video essay, live stream, game, image, podcast, or mod. We suggest that authors may want to consider something like the creative multimodal elements found in Metagaming by Stephanie Boluk and Patrick LeMieux. Articles should be scholarly, drawing on research and theory, but must also be accessible to the broadly educated, non-specialist audience of PCSJ.
