In SHAPING AI, we will investigate the formation of „AI" as a central socio-technical institution in contemporary societies. Over a ten-year period (2012-2021), we will conduct a comparative study of the issue career, framing and problematisation of AI in the four participating countries and in three domains: media, politics and technical research. Hello colleagues! Debate about platform regulation is intensifying rapidly, with the recent House report, last week’s DoJ suit against Google and today’s hearings on Section 230. We argue, drawing on the great work of many on this list, that approaches to date do not go nearly far enough to address the social harms that the major platforms’ business model generates: what is needed is a complete regulatory reset that realigns platforms' relations with our society and our politics. Here are some details about the Journal and the forthcoming issue: *About the Journal* The *Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy* (JITP) seeks scholarly work at the intersection of technology with teaching, learning, and research. We are interested in contributions that creatively take advantage of the affordances of digital platforms and critique their limitations. We invite both textual and multimedia submissions employing interdisciplinary and innovative approaches in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. communication +1 is seeking proposals for Volume 8, “Crises and Communication" Edited by Zachary McDowell, Peter Royal, and Justin Raden Notwithstanding the current situation, periods of crisis and upheaval exacerbate inequities in our communication infrastructure and throw into sharp relief the profound barriers to access. In such fraught moments, we can glimpse the extent to which our systems of mediation differentially serve and confound us according to our positionality within these systems. To understand the effects of crises on communication, it is important to consider the history of systems of mediation that have both limited and encouraged access, participation, and equity across knowledge, space, and culture. What have crises, both present, perpetual, and past, intimated about flaws, gaps, and inequities in systems of communication that are overlooked or disregarded under “normal” (if “normal” exists) conditions? How might we think about how infrastructure relates to the crises and thus the infrastructures of communication are the infrastructures of communication in/justice? How and why are people and communities affected differently in these crises, and how do systems of communication and mediation both mitigate and compound these phenomena? Questions of meaning making, truth, misinformation, and access are welcomed within our new collection. In particular, bringing new context and contextualization (whether philosophical, historical, archeological, rhetorical, ecological, or otherwise) to query contemporary crises of communicative access issues are welcome. Dear all, probably, you have seen the latest reports of Zoom shutting down a panel on Zoom censorship or Facebook's cease and desist letter to the NYU's political ad targeting project. I am interested whether there are more examples of legal challenges for researchers. I am particularly interested in issues revolving around GDPR and social media research, contract law and data collection from services such as LexisNexis or others, and terms of use and platforms. I am also interested in the role of university DPO's in reviewing research design, and the infrastructure or the modus operandi put in place (or not) by universities to enable researchers to comply with GDPR, and the legal support (or the lack of it) universities provide for their researchers to carry out their tasks.
