Dear all, Data & Society is hosting our first *online* Academic Workshop, Against Platform Determinism: How institutions, individuals, and infrastructures mediate platform power. <https://datasociety.net/announcements/2020/09/15/call-for-participants-agai…> Applications are due on* October 21st, *and the event itself will take place on *Thursday, January 14, 2021*. More about the workshop: This workshop invites scholars to consider how interactions with platform companies do or do not shape how technologies are designed, and deployed, and how global users are governed. Though platforms are centralized and powerful actors, this workshop is intended to explore the existing and emerging infrastructures, cultures, and organizational forms can shape decision-making and design or impede platforms’ implementation “on the ground.” These forces can include users of these platforms, industry actors, civil society organizations, and government, but it can also include how existing infrastructures—such as low connectivity areas—can mediate the impact of technology on communities. Scholars interested in this topic, from emerging to experts, academics to activists, all across the globe, are encouraged to apply. We’ll be selecting authors of *draft/in-progress papers*, as well as participants to help workshop the drafts. Ample time will be built in for networking and field building too. About a potential study on High School student's perception of YouTube videos

Hello, air members. In my current job teaching to High School level students, I left several assignments of watching videos and writing brief reports about their content and the impressions the students got from them. The videos were about astronomy and biology, and they either complemented or reviewed content taught in class (online). I am curious about the perception the students had on women scientists (the education we provide them is on the STEM side, so you can imagine most of them are male students); and on animations to explain complex processes (photosynthesis for example). They are over 200 students, so I thought I could do some sort of exploratory/ethnographic research with their data. However, when I consulted my colleague with whom I teach these classes, he told me the essays were not valid because students of this age (15-16) in this country barely understand English and would not be able to understand videos in English. He admitted that this time, as classes were online, he can not personally assess the students overall comprehension level. It is true that some students mentioned they had difficulty in understanding the videos (I read all their essays), but I noticed that certain aspects of the video (being animated and the speed of talk of the video host for example) made the content easier to understand. I am not sure if I did not explain my idea to my colleague clearly, as our backgrounds are very different. I also still have to talk with my Department Head about my idea. Anyway, in concrete, I would like to ask for suggestions on how to conduct a valuable research with the data we have, or if it would be better to focus in other types of data. Regards, Xanat V. New special issue of Internet Policy Review on ‘Geopolitics, Jurisdiction and Surveillance’ edited by Dr Monique Mann (Deakin) and Dr Angela Daly (Strathclyde). ABSTRACT The rise of digital information communication technology has major implications for how states wield coercive power beyond their territorial borders through the extraterritorial geographies of data flows. In examining the geopolitics of data, transnational surveillance, and jurisdiction, this collection makes a significant contribution to the field of global internet governance. It shows how the internet is a forum for geopolitical struggle with states weaponising jurisdiction and exerting power beyond their own borders directly, and via infrastructures owned and operated by transnational technology companies. These dynamics challenge existing conceptual and theoretical categories of contemporary law across the fields of international relations, criminology, and digital media, and raise urgent questions about if and how individual rights can be protected in an era of ubiquitous transnational surveillance conducted by private companies and governments alike. ACM IUI 2021 CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS (deadline extended) In conjunction with the 26th International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI 2021) College Station, TX, USA April 13 - 17, 2021 http://iui.acm.org/ IUI 2021 is pleased to invite proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the conference. The goal of the workshops is to provide a venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Workshops will be held on the first day of the conference. We invite submissions of full-day (6 hours) and half-day (3 hours) workshop proposals on any of the conference topics (or related). This year we are particularly interested in workshops that have an interactive aspect. Preference will be given to workshops with interactive and hands-on sessions where participants can team up or work together towards the common goal of the workshop. We encourage proposals for a wide range of workshops, including but not limited to: - "Mini-conferences" on specialized topics; such workshops may have their own paper submission and review processes. - "Late breaking work" meetings; such workshops usually have a lighter review process (e.g. based on abstracts only). - "Hands-on" workshops around a specific problem or topic that may wish to ask participants to submit a position statement. - "Mini-competitions", challenges, or hackathons around selected topics with individual or team participation. == PROPOSAL FORMAT == Note: One of the keys to a successful workshop submission is to CONTACT THE CHAIRS WITH YOUR IDEAS (workshops2021(a)iui.acm.org) and work together to prepare an exciting proposal! We have a fairly specific query and would like to know which information is given about the tweets harvested through the query (e.g. is language or geographic information given for tweets, even if it isn't part of the query - so not a selection criterion)? Dear all, a special issue devoted to the relationship between politics and digitization from a theoretical perspective of the Zeitschrift für Politikwissenschaft <https://www.springer.com/journal/41358> (ZPol) will be published in autumn 2021 under the title "Political Theory of the Digital Constellation". The contributions will critically examine the relationship between political theory and digitalization in diachronic reconstruction, synchronous analysis and normative perspective, reflect on existing normative positions and integrate the findings of other disciplines – such as Science & Technology Studies or the philosophy of technology – into political science research in order to contribute to a Political Theory of the digital constellation.
