Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies welcomes applicants for our Ph.D. program. The interdisciplinarity of our program is visible through the backgrounds of the 30 current doctoral students and the faculty involved. Doctoral students pursue individualized course plans that are tuned to their particular research interests and needs. This means advising and close working relationships with faculty members are cornerstones of the Syracuse University iSchool Ph.D. program. This is why our program is both residential and full-time. Dear all, Please join us for a Zoom seminar this Friday on the intimacies of data-driven culture with Irina Shklovski, Deborah Lupton and Minna Ruckenstein. The talks will also be posted on our website for later viewing. What’s intimate about data? What’s intimate about data flows? Who tracks what or whom? Why should we care? Digital media is, especially in these times of social distancing, infrastructural in how we navigate the obligations of work, studies and social life. Devices, apps and services both generate and leak data as we message, do searches, post on social media, track our number of steps or match with someone on a dating app. All kinds of daily routines give rise to data shadows reflective of our habits, likes and intimate attachments. Our seminar asks, what is at stake in data-driven technologies both shaping and invading everyday life. The invited speakers are the world’s leading experts within the fields of research on intimacy, data and the digital world. Irina Shklovski, University of Copenhagen, “The Perils of Visibility: Why the digital world is inevitably creepy” Irina Shklovski seeks to answer how to design to exploit technology’s usefulness without exploiting its users. This drives her research in three areas: privacy and creepy technologies, ethics and responsibility in innovation, and how to address the sense of powerlessness people experience in the face of massive personal data collection. break Deborah Lupton, University of New South Wales, “More-than-Human Data Intimacies” Deborah Lupton has a background in sociology and media and cultural studies. She is the author/co-author of 17 books and editor/co-editor of six book collections, as well as many chapters and articles, ranging across such topics as health and medicine, food, the body, the emotions and affect, risk, parenthood, digital technologies and cultures of data. Minna Ruckenstein, University of Helsinki, “Self-Tracking and the Limits of Intimacy” Minna Ruckenstein works as an associate professor at the Consumer Society Research Centre and the Helsinki Centre for Digital Humanities. Her research group explores digitalization/datafication by highlighting emotional, social, political and economic aspects of current and emerging data practices. He has collaborated with artists and producers to devise and deliver many award-winning digital projects, from developing one of Scotland’s first cultural websites (for Edinburgh Fringe) through to the current Covid-19 Digital Season for Sydney Opera House. His work also extends to music programming, for broadcasters such as ABC Double J and FBi Radio, and as Director of the experimental music initiative, New Weird Australia. "Critical Game Design" Special Issue Description: Despite critical work by foundational games scholar-designers such as Tracy Fullerton, Mary Flanagan, and Katherine Isbister, the academic field of games has largely developed along two separate axes: game production and games criticism. This split produces tensions for game scholars, who, despite often self-describing as “interdisciplinary,” are still bound by the epistemic, political, and institutional boundaries of the academy. Game scholars must produce scholarship in forms that are knowable and legitimizeable by their institutions. Researchers in game production face challenges when articulating the impact of colonial, race-based, and gendered legacies of their “purely technical” field. Conversely, researchers in games criticism risk being labeled as “selling out” when attempting to practice scholarly and political critique through game production. Tenure and job search committees, already concerned with the disciplinary and epistemic “fit” of games candidates, are likely to discount production work by scholars in the humanities and social sciences, and critical work by scholars in the computational sciences and development. Game scholars have thus been required to internalize knowledge practices about how research is conducted, what topics are considered “in bounds,” and what questions and criticisms are permitted. Though “design methods” have been posited as a way to muddle through these tensions, they are often done so in ways that reinforce the modularized, consilience model of game scholarship, or without engaging with the intellectual and political tensions and criticisms that design research itself faces. This proposed special issue seeks to address the gap in the intersection of knowledge production across games criticism and design research. We're especially interested in providing a venue for games scholars engaging with design research and practice as a form of critical knowledge-making, as well as for broader conversations about the roles that different practiced and embodied research knowledges can have in the Game Studies community. We expect that essays will engage with the political and epistemological dimensions of design research, including how systems of power legitimize certain ways of knowing over others, the challenges of integrating critique and material practice, and the potential for games + design to highlight feminist, Indigenous, and raced knowledges that have been marginalized in both game studies and in design research. Examples of topics of interest to this issue include, but are not limited to: * Connecting Game Studies with game design * Game design as knowledge practice * Feminist, Indigenous, critical race, and disability interventions in game design * Intersections of design research and game design * Materiality, platforms, and game design * Game design in/as academic institutions * Dismantling disciplinary boundary work between design and critique * Politics with and through game production * Theorizing game design * Institutionalization of critical game design * Game Design and Game Studies in the higher-ed classroom Articles will have a maximum length of 5000 words (not including citations), formatted in Chicago Manual Style. Postdoctoral Position: Critical Study of Artificial Intelligence (Media, Policy and Techno-Scientific Deployment) INRS’ Nenic Lab in collaboration with Concordia’s Algorithmic Media Observatory seek a post-doctoral associate for a position of 2 years (potentially extendable to 3 years pending funding) to work with respective directors, Professors J. Roberge and F. McKelvey on their collaborative projects. Funded by Canada’ Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the first project Media Governance after AI involves 1) media archeology, 2) controversy mapping, 3) policy analysis and 4) speculative design related to the adoption of AI systems in media regulation. The second project Shaping AI is a global partnership funded by SSHRC and its international partners. Led by C. Katzenbach at HIIG Berlin, the project is part of a consortium comprising scholars from the University of Warwick and the Media Lab, Paris as well as Canada. Shaping AI deals with the framing of AI by media, policy-leaders and computer scientists in Canada, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. We are looking for a critical scholar who sees their work at the intersection of multiple social sciences. Especially, we seek candidates who have an interest and experience in researching historical and contemporary entanglements between technology, media and policy-making. Fields of specialization might include but are not limited to: Science & Technology Studies, Communication and Media Studies, Histories of Science, Sociology, or Anthropology. An interest in digital methods is an asset. Job Requirements: A strong research profile, organizational and networking skills, experience in collaborative and interdisciplinary research, and publishing projects. You will be primarily responsible for your own research as well as the organization of group work (curation, book editing projects, etc.) with our international team. As the research team is based in Montreal and spans over a Francophone and an Anglophone institution, the capacity to operate in both official languages of Canada would be considered an asset. Salary is CA$41,931/year (including 13% benefits) plus generous support for research and travel. Importantly, said salary is calculated on a 4 workdays/week basis (or 80% of a full-time position).
