The goal of the tutorials is to provide a venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Tutorials are designed to provide fundamental knowledge and experience on topics related to intelligent user interfaces, and the intersection between Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Note: We encourage you to contact the chairs with your ideas (emails above), and work together to prepare an exciting proposal. We encourage proposals for a wide range of tutorials, including but not limited to: - "Hands-on" or “project-centric” tutorials around a specific problem or topic. - Tutorials on a specific topic relevant to IUI; for example, methods and approaches in HCI and/or AI, specific techniques or algorithms to develop intelligent user interfaces, etc. Tutorials will be held on the first day of the conference. We invite submissions of proposals for half-day (3 hours) or full-day (6 hours) tutorials. Proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by the tutorial chairs. We encourage you to consider virtual and semi-virtual options for the tutorial in the submission. The organizers of accepted tutorials are responsible for producing a call for participation and publicizing it, such as distributing the call to relevant newsgroups and electronic mailing lists, and especially to potential audiences from outside the IUI conference community. Tutorial organizers are also required to set up their own website with information about the tutorial and the IUI 2021 web site will refer to this website. PROPOSAL FORMAT Tutorial proposals should be maximum 2 pages long and follow the formatting instructions at https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template. Please either use the Word interim template with Libertine fonts downloaded and embedded, or the LaTex sigconf template. The proposals should be organized as follows: - Name and title: A one-word acronym and a full title. - Description of tutorial topic: This description should discuss the relevance of the suggested topic to IUI and its interest for the IUI2021 audience. Include a brief discussion of why and for which audience the tutorial is of particular interest. - Organizer(s): Names, affiliations, emails, and web pages of the organizer(s). Provide a brief description of the background of the organiser(s). Strong proposals normally include organizers who bring differing perspectives on the topic and are actively connected to the communities of potential participants. Description of the Journal The Journal of Communication Technology is the official journal of the Communication Technology division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. The expressed aim of this journal is to bring together research that facilitates discussion and cultivates understanding of the ways in which communication technologies are changing not only media processes and content, but also audiences, institutions, and society at large. Since communication technologies themselves have now come to fulfill a central, social role in virtually all forms of mediated communication, JoCTEC welcomes scholarship from a broad area of inquiry provided that the focus pertains to communication technologies. This includes but is not limited to studies of social media, advertising, science, networks, health, politics, history, policy, public relations, management, economics, ethics, minorities, and visual communication. About that COVID-19 app your university just required you to install...

Dear AIR-L friends, I bet many of you are among the millions who are just about to be required to install a new coronavirus-related app by your university. I'm writing to announce that the ESC Center has just released 15 best practices for pandemic apps at US universities. It is a very short read. Here is the list: http://esc.umich.edu/pandemic-apps/ My own personal takeaways are: [1.] App experts aren't recommending apps. (At least, not for many of the things they are being deployed to do.) And [2.] The apps being deployed right now by universities are deviating widely from good practice in terms of human rights and software development. These apps are doing all kinds of unexpected things in the name of the pandemic. A great example is Albion College, which reportedly just deployed the Genetworx Aura app to geofence its campus. If you live on campus and decide to go into town, they lock you out of your house. The event is co-sponsored by the Internet Society Washington DC Chapter and the Internet Governance Lab: Beyond Cambridge Analytica: Microtargeting and Online Campaigns in 2020. Use of data and microtargeting in political advertising were famously critiqued after in the 2016 US elections, and in relation to other recent influence campaigns around the world. Though the principal firm known for these campaigns, Cambridge Analytica, shuttered in 2018, these techniques are still widely employed, and several former CA employees are now involved with new data analytics and campaign firms including Datapropria, which has been linked to the 2020 election. New research on online discourse about COVID in the US

Dear AOIR, I imagine many of you will be preparing courses for next term and thinking about incorporating issues pertaining to COVID. With this in mind, I wanted to flag up two pieces of work I've recently published concerning discourse about COVID on Twitter in the US. Politicizing Agency in Digital Play after Humanism Convergence (special issue) Guest Editors: Aleena Chia (Simon Fraser University) aleena.chia(a)sfu.ca Paolo Ruffino (University of Liverpool) p.ruffino(a)liverpool.ac.uk Since its inception, the humanistic field of digital game studies has been concerned with the politics and aesthetics of interactivity and its delimitation of player agency in relation to other screen-based media. Drawing from media and cultural studies, the humanistic study of games has adopted normative frameworks that divide audiences into active and passive, and media into new and old, in order to evaluate players' power over and participation within architected environments. Today, discussions about agency in games has diversified from the analysis of interactive forms (Manovich 1996; Laurel 1997; Ndalianis 1999) to include considerations about the contexts of participation and co-creation in game production (Banks 2013; Joseph 2018) diversity and inclusion in game representations and communities (Ruberg and Shaw 2017; Gray and Leonard 2018; Stang 2019), and affordances of bodies, devices, and platforms (Keogh 2018; Brock and Fraser 2018; Nieborg and Poell 2018) that make up assemblages of play (Taylor 2009; De Paoli and Kerr 2010; Apperley and Jayemanne 2012). In 2018, The Velvet Light Trap featured a special issue on power, freedom, and control in game studies, and GAME: Italian Journal of Game Studies is planning a special issue on "Claiming Video Game Agency as an Interdisciplinary Concept." Agency continues to be a keyword in game studies. Agency is, however, at an inflection point in the cognate fields of critical theory and media studies. Marxist feminists have proposed ecological frameworks for living ethically in the Anthropocene by reconceptualizing capitalism through complex interdependencies and multispecies commons instead of the agency of individuals or institutions (Roelvink and Gibson-Graham 2009; Tsing 2015). Post-humanists have critiqued Western humanist ideals of reason and autonomy as masculinist, ethnocentric, and anthropocentric (Braidotti 2016) and proposed cognitive assemblages to understand linguistic and volitional acts as emergent from nonconscious biological and algorithmic processes and environments (Hayles 2017). According to this scholarship, once we shift the primary unit of analysis from the properties of objects and boundaries of bodies to intra-acting phenomena, it becomes clear that "agency is not an attribute but the ongoing reconfigurings of the world" (Barad 2007: 141). This shift requires a reworking of causality, which has been undertaken in game studies by decentering hegemonic play practices configured around goal-based challenges and mastery (Keogh 2018), and by using speculative design to challenge assumptions about humans as separate causal agents in locative media's material entanglements with devices, interfaces, and infrastructures (Leorke and Wood 2019). This special issue continues this line of inquiry by tracing connections between intra-acting agencies at different scales throughout the assemblage of play. By curating cases that connect devices and bodies to game forms, genres, and governance across infrastructural, material, and discursive scales, this special issue aims to inflect posthuman concerns in ongoing debates about interactivity, inclusion, participation, and co-creation in games. Guided by the pragmatism of the feminist eco-humanities, this special issue will deploy theories and consider methods (Hamilton and Taylor 2017) to politicize ways of conceptualizing, designing, and organizing games for agency beyond human centrism. How can critical game scholars address and advocate for more inclusive, democratic, and sustainable forms of play, understood as performative outcomes of an array of interdependencies between humans, environments and non-human entities? As an artistic and economic expression of the mediated technicity of our current age, videogames crystalize the conundrum of individual agency that has beset our screens and bedevilled our politics. Videogames also embed critiques of this conundrum that are often ambivalent but occasionally trenchant. How can critical game scholarship on post-human agency intervene in pressing debates about persuasive technologies' manipulation of human volition and its long shadow over the mechanisms and institutions of collective decision-making that constitute democracy? Prospective authors are invited to address the questions above, or expand the line of inquiry towards new critical trajectories. Call for comments on ethical certification Dear all, Contact Tracing Applications and Contact Tracing Technologies (CTA/CTT) continue to be cited as approaches to help manage the spread of COVID-19. At the same time, many considerations continue to be raised around ethical transparency, accountability, and privacy in relation to the CTA/CTT use and implementations, as they have the potential to transform the nature of society. The IEEE Ethics Certification Program for Autonomous and Intelligent Systems<https://standards.ieee.org/industry-connections/ecpais.html> (ECPAIS), under its purpose of developing critical certification criteria for responsible innovation and delivery of autonomous and intelligent systems, developed AI ethics-oriented certification criteria focused on transparency, accountability, and algorithmic bias. With the growing urgency and critical considerations of CTA/CTT, a use case for application of the criteria to address how we can verify greater ethical transparency, accountability, and privacy demonstrations in CTA/CTT was developed. This use case exhibits an initial set of the ECPAIS criteria applied to CTA/CTT. Realizing that the use case and, consequently the criteria by proxy, may be improved with input from a larger set of experts spanning wide and relevant domains, we are asking for your views and input. From legal, medical, ethical, technical, psychological, societal, governance, to cybersecurity – and beyond, all perspectives are welcome. Your feedback will be taken into consideration in the next update to the CTA/CTT ethical verification criteria use case. These criteria will help set the foundation for future ethics certification programs that testing agencies, implementers, and committed ecosystem stakeholders may seek to apply.
