The professorship covers the full spectrum of communication studies, including research and teaching. The research focus should lie in the area of public spheres and recent approaches to inequality research, especially with regard to the impacts of digitization and globalization. In accordance with the professorship’s profile, the successful candidate is expected to carry out intensive, internationally oriented research activities in the subject area of the professorship, taking into account the mission statement of the department. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to participate in the teaching of BA and MA Communication Studies courses, especially theories of Communication Studies, as well as contribute to doctoral programmes. General employment requirements are: · A completed dissertation obtained in Austria, or an equivalent dissertation completed in another country; · Relevant postdoctoral qualification (venia docendi) in journalism/media or communication studies or related relevant disciplines, or an equivalent academic qualification; · Outstanding academic track record; · Pedagogical and university teaching competences; · Aptitude for managing a university institution; · Proof of involvement with the international scientific community · Willingness and ability to teach courses and hold examinations in English Further expectations are: · Participation in and building up of research and teaching partnerships at Paris Lodron University; · Willingness to participate in university self-government; · Experience in research management and in the acquisition of external funding; · Social competences, focus on partnerships and interdisciplinarity; · Willingness and qualification to take on leadership positions; · Knowledge of spoken and written German or willingness to learn German within two years This is a permanent full-time position in accordance with § 98 of the Austrian Universities Act (Universitätsgesetz) 2002 and the Salaried Employees Act (Angestelltengesetz) as well as the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Staff / Job Group A1 (Kollektivvertrag für die Arbeitnehmerinnen und Arbeitnehmer der Universitäten/Verwendungsgruppe A1). A monthly salary of € 5,245.60 gross (14 payments per year) is intended, which exceeds the minimum salary given in the Collective Bargaining Agreement for this salary group. The Journal of Hate Studies General Issue, Vol. 17 with a Forum on “Pandemania” Guest Editor: Lisa Silvestri (Gonzaga University) *The Journal of Hate Studies* is an international scholarly journal promoting intellectual engagement with processes that embolden the expression of hate. The goal is to establish a deep repository of theory and research on which to ground practical anti-hate interventions. For example, past articles in the journal have: · Examined hate in any one or more of its manifestations (e.g. racism, misogyny, antisemitism, homophobia, religious intolerance, ethnoviolence, anti-immigrant animus, etc.). · Considered how hate is institutionalized, maintained, or perpetrated through culture, organizations, policies, politics, media, discourses, epistemologies, etc. · Developed, adapted, or refined disciplinary specific or trans-disciplinary research methods for understanding and/or effectively addressing hate. *The Journal* reflects the optimism that understanding hate can lead to its containment, allowing humans to flourish without fear of reprisal. For this issue, we will accept both general submissions on any topic within the field as well as contributions destined for a subsection featuring conversations on hate taking place during the COVID-19 pandemic. General submissions range between 6,000-8,000 words. Forum submissions are shorter, ranging between 3,000-5,000 words. Potential topics covered by the “pandemania” forum can include, but should not be limited to, the following COVID-19 focused topics: Racism and anti-racism Xenophobia Protests Policing Masks and social distancing Institutional violence Digital manifestations of hate We invite both textual and visual submissions employing interdisciplinary and innovative approaches in the humanities and social sciences. To float ideas and proposals for the general submission or for this forum, specifically, please contact silvestri(a)gonzaga.edu. *Brief Guidelines for Submissions* The Journal seeks compelling articles written with precision and depth that find resonance with an interdisciplinary audience. A primary criterion for acceptance is the level to which the article enriches, extends, and advances the study and understanding of hate in its multiplicity of forms. Research-based submissions should follow 7th APA format and include a discussion of approach, method, and analysis. Submissions focusing on pedagogy should balance theoretical frameworks with practical considerations of how particular approaches play out in both formal and informal educational settings. Discipline-specific submissions should be written for non-specialists. Dear AoiR-ists, with the usual regrets for duplications and cross-postings: please forward to interested colleagues and relevant listservs: == Work, place, mobility and embodiment: «recovery» or repairment in a post-Covid world? The next IFIP Working Group 9.8 workshop on Gender, Diversity and ICT will take place in Linköping, Sweden, April 15-16, 2021. We focus on experiences and reflections from feminist techno-science perspectives on themes of gender, diversity, and inclusion vis-a-vis the societal-scale shifts to online platforms (Zoom, Microsoft Meetings, etc.) and more digitalized ways of living and working in general in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic jolted whole vocations and sectors of society into remote/digital modes. While much of our lives in the contemporary North, as thoroughly interwoven with digital and network technologies, gives the impression of immateriality - the disease brought into stark focus how much of everyday life depends on materialities and the work of bodies. The embodied labor of not only doctors and nurses, but also of drivers, teachers, social workers, cleaners, cashiers, researchers and many others remains essential to both fighting the pandemic and meeting the basic necessities of sustaining life and societies. The pandemic makes visible the intersecting positions and hierarchies of embodied work, as well as the merits and limits of the digital. Against this background, our broad question is: how should we conceptualize, design for, and speak about «recovery» from the pandemic? Who should / will be included in a «recovery» of pre-pandemic practices of travel and affiliated conceptions of place and mobility as privileges tied to class, gender, ethnicity, etc? How are we to conceptualize and thereby shape how we think and feel about possible futures and the role of digital technologies therein? What happens, for example, if we shift from the language of «recovery» to the language of «repairment» - that which is needed is to repair unjust social, cultural, spiritual, economic, and political structures and systems, and most especially the climate and ecosystems of the planet we live on? Repairment can further implicate notions of entanglement and co-generation. Taking up these and perhaps other theoretical, conceptual, and/or linguistic resources – can we discern and better design for our interrelationality, most especially as we are inextricably interwoven with one another via computational and network technologies? SUBMISSION DETAILS / TIMELINE We invite papers (3000-5000 words) that address the themes and issues described above or similar to these. (Papers may be crafted with a view towards helping refine these during the workshop for possible submission to and presentation in the 2022 IFIP conference in Tokyo). Papers must be prepared for blinded submission as all papers will undergo a blind review process. Papers should be formatted in a standard style and referencing system as defined within a document template that will be provided. We will explore possibilities of taking at least some of the Workshop submissions into a journal special issue (the details of this have yet to be developed.) Joseph writes frequently on media and internet issues and is the co-author of the New York Times bestseller News for All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media. He is the 2015 recipient of the Everett C. Parker Award, which recognizes an individual whose work embodies the principles and values of the public interest. Before joining Free Press, Joseph worked as deputy director of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and was a journalist for several years. Angèle Christin is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at Stanford University. She studies how algorithms and analytics transform professional values, expertise, and work practices. Her book, Metrics at Work: Journalism and the Contested Meaning of Algorithms (Princeton University Press, 2020) focuses on the case of web journalism, analyzing the growing importance of audience data in web newsrooms in the U.S. and France. Drawing on ethnographic methods, Angèle shows how American and French journalists make sense of traffic numbers in different ways, which in turn has distinct effects on the production of news in the two countries. Angèle is currently a Visiting Researcher with the Social Media Collective at Microsoft Research New England. She is an affiliate at Data & Society Research Institute.

Call for Participation: Live Streaming Symposium-Communities of Play Online April 17-18, 2021 The Digital Cultures Collaboratory in the Center for 21st Century Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is a research group comprising graduate students, library staff, and faculty. Since 2017 this group has operated Serious Play<https://uwm.edu/c21/research/c21-collaboratory/current-collaboratory-groups…>, a channel on the Twitch live streaming network devoted to gameplay and reflective commentary. In April 2021, we are hosting a symposium that celebrates communities of play created and maintained through streaming. All presentations must be pre-recorded, but we also encourage live presentation. We invite symposium presentations that consider live streaming across its numerous applications. Teachers, critics, and commentators have been using live-streaming technologies since their inception to reflect on games, play and culture. Similarly, a complex network of individual or collaborative streamers and eSports organizations use live streaming as a form of broadcasting. Even more broadly, as we all face a global pandemic that prohibits us from sharing physical space, virtual environments and digital live communication have kept communities connected. As we shift into increasingly online or distant labor and communication, live streaming has become a hub for sharing, generating, and sustaining cultures of play and performance. With this wide potential for critical discourse about live streaming in mind, the Digital Cultures Collaboratory is certain of the importance of this event, which will be held online April 17-18. The Symposium will feature presentations of approximately 40 minutes using Twitch or a similarly accessible platform to combine the live streaming of gameplay or other performative activities with commentary, reflection, or instruction. Presentations must be recorded and may also be performed live at the event. They may involve multiple participants. We will consider a wide range of possibilities but particularly encourage proposals that explore live streaming in contexts such as: * Building and sustaining communities * Responding to regional and global crises * Reaching out to communities not privileged in academia * Transforming traditional academic and political institutions * Developing and intervening in popular culture * Emerging pedagogies * Engaging in critical discourse of and through play * Popularizing and encouraging political action * Questioning whether live streaming practices constitute safe spaces To apply, send a description of your project of approximately 750 words to seriousplayuwm(a)gmail.com with the subject “SYMPOSIUM ABSTRACT – First Name Last Name”. Your proposal should include: 1. Statement of concept, identifying elements of performance and commentary 2. Links to streaming channel or other work as appropriate Proposals will be reviewed by members of the Collaboratory and external consultants. All presentations selected for the program must have a pre-recorded version to insure against technical contingencies, but we will do our best to support live presentation as a preferred option.
