A track can be a session, a workshop, or a symposium. A session will have at least 6 papers; a workshop at least 12 papers; and a symposium at least 18 papers. Track chairs will be responsible for all aspects of their tracks, including: soliciting papers, reviewing, selecting, ... The names of track chairs will appear as Associate Editors in the conference proceedings and they will be presented achievement awards at appropriate professional levels during the Award Ceremony on site at the congress. Track chairs who attract a sufficient number of solid papers can propose to edit books with a major publisher based on the extended versions of the papers accepted in their tracks (the congress will facilitate and help such track chairs to get the publisher's approval: such as Springer, Elsevier, ...). Proposals to organize tracks (sessions, workshops, or symposiums) should include the following information: name and address (+ email) of proposer, his/her biography, title of track, a 100-word description of the topic of the track, the name of the conference the track is submitted for consideration and a short description on how the track will be advertised (in most cases, track proposers solicit papers from colleagues and researchers whose work is known to the track proposer). V&A Pre-histories and Futures of Machine Vision Symposium Friday, 28 February 2020, 10.30 – 17.00 Hochhauser Auditorium, V&A Museum, South Kensington, London, UK How do machines see? From autonomous vehicles to deep fakes, machine vision is changing contemporary life. Join curators, artists and scholars to discuss the impact of computer vision and AI technologies on the past, present and future of art and design. The symposium will explore early moments in the development of computer art, from the mid-1960s onwards, viewing these first experiments in transforming number-crunching computers into image generating machines as a kind of pre-history of machine vision. It will also bring together contemporary artists, designers and curators considering the aesthetic and political implications of contemporary computer vision and machine learning technologies. Their creative and critical projects are shaping our understanding of these technologies, while highlighting the social and ethical concerns they raise. The deadline is tomorrow night 🤓 Borders, bordering and sovereignty in cyberspace *Call for Papers for RGS-IBG Annual Conference, London, 1-4 September 2020* Sponsored by: Digital Geography Research Group (DGRG) Session organisers: Dr Chenchen Zhang (QUB) and Carwyn Morris (London School of Economics) National borders continue to operate in the digital space despite predictions otherwise. Scholars have argued that the global communication space and the nation state are both oppositional and co-constituting forces in internet governance. Cyberborders are produced through, for instance, regulatory systems, jurisdictional assertions, censorship regimes, and discourses of cyber sovereignty and cyber security. While governments draw on concepts of sovereignty and national security to assert control over a virtual space that seems essentially borderless, civil society actors have also sought to put forward ideas of digital sovereignty along the lines of freedom and self-determination. This session aims to address theoretical and empirical questions regarding processes of (de)bordering and (de)territorialization in cyberspace. How are the concepts of sovereignty, territory, and borders reproduced and transformed in the context of the digital? What are the emerging patterns of power and contestation with regard to the control over data and information flows? We especially welcome contributions that engage with critical perspectives on the concepts of sovereignty, territory, and borders such as those focused on performance, discourse/practice, and governmentality. Papers might explore the following themes: * The production of digital territories and borders through legal, technological, and other means * Firewalls, censorship regimes, internet disruptions * The territorialization of services, infrastructure and populations * Concepts and discourses of cyber, digital, and data sovereignty * The geopolitics of data and internet control * Cyberborders and data protection law * How borders and practices of territorialization in cyberspace are contested * The impact of territorialization and bordering on populations * Conceptual and theoretical contributions * Contributions beyond methodological nationalism We encourage panellists to present in a creative method, not limited to a formal paper presentation. The session will consist of 4-5 papers, a strictly enforced 15 mins each to enable time for question and answers. Guidelines will be provided for accepted panellists. Whilst we would love to see you in London, we support Skype presentations and pre-recorded video presentations, as long as the presenter can engage in the Q&A. We would be grateful if you could help us to disseminate this CFP, many thanks in advance *Special Issue **on Shame, Shaming, and Online Image Sharing to be published by First Monday* Editors: Gaby David, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris 3 and Amparo Lasen, Universidad Complutense of Madrid. *Call for papers * We are preparing a special issue for the open-access journal First Monday on the topic of shame and shaming around the practices of sharing images online. Vernacular mobile images are the visual intersection of everyday life and popular culture, taken, viewed on and/or shared from mobile devices. They are the building blocks of our visual co-construction of reality. But, what can the experiences of shame and shaming related to practices of sharing more or less intimate vernacular mobile images indicate about our digitally connected societies and about contemporary subjectivities? Shame is an ordinary affect, a key emotion regarding sociability and social orderings, as it is elicited by the fear of disconnection from our actual social bonds or the ones we aspire to be part of. It is a mode of affecting and being affected that shapes and mobilises ordinary experiences and relationships, and it is narrowly linked to social orderings and social structuration and exclusion processes. Shame points to how norms are fixed, maintained and challenged, to what is appropriate and what is not, who is appropriate and who isn’t. Shaming others, a common online practice is also a way of reinforcing these same social orderings and senses. In this issue, we would like to explore how shame, shaming, and embarrassment are involved in the production of disquiets, vulnerabilities and exclusions in mediated intimacies and gender choreographies sustained and deployed through the convergence of camera phones, social networks, and mobile apps. Contemporary online visual practices are haunted by shame. As our mobile visual performances and exposure make us run the risk of becoming inappropriate and make our becoming risky when we are already deemed as inappropriate. We aim at analysing concepts such as visibility, public and private, the digital modulation of presence and of intimacy, shame and share, and its relations to normativity, surveillance, and sousveillance. In times of data mining and Artificial Intelligence, reflections on the epistemology of coupled values such as ‘sharing and shaming’ must be on the research agenda. An awareness and analysis of the sharing-shaming duo surely contribute to the understanding of digital practices and habits. In theoretical, methodological and ethical approaches, this special issue does not seek to describe the benefits, motivations and/or risks on why banal everyday life mobile vernacular images should remain private and/or public but interrogate both the situations behind these vernacular mobile imagery sharing when shame is elicited, as well as when individual or collective shaming initiatives arise in response to such images. Personal and/or collective decisions to share private content or be ashamed of doing so, have multiple and complex and interrelated correlations. We encourage contributions from diverse fields that may include (but are not limited to) visual sociology, digital ethnography, fine art, gender studies, internet studies, mobile studies, cultural studies, pop culture, and game/play studies.
