***Call for Participation for 4S Open Panel on "Making science in public: Studying science communication and public engagement"*** https://www.easst4s2020prague.org/call-for-papers-and-panels/ Joint Conference for Society for Social Studies of Science & European Association for the Study of Science and Technology, Prague, August 18-21, 2020 Submission Deadline Feb 29, 2020 Science communication and public engagement with science are key mechanisms by which scientific knowledge is mediated, negotiated, and transformed. Over the past decades, STS research has outlined the ways in which science and society are co-produced through public communication activities and catalysed a shift towards dialogue and engagement in science communication practice. More recently, issues of representation, exclusion, and contestation have risen to the fore in discussions of science in public, as well as concerns about public (dis)trust in expertise, the dizzying impacts of social media, and debates about science's role in political activism and resistance. This open panel invites paper proposals that analyse such ways that science is represented, transformed, contested or negotiated in public venues. Papers may explore, for instance, citizen science; science and technology-related activism; science in social media; science in museums; deliberative experiments; popular science writing; science blogging; sciart activities; news media; or science comedy - as well as the myriad other sites and mechanisms by which science is done in public. We invite critical analysis of these sites and mechanisms. For example, papers might analyse the constitution of publics and knowledges within particular science communication activities; discuss affective or temporal regimes of public engagement with science; or give accounts of experimental practice that show how STS might contribute to doing science in public in just, generous, and collaborative ways. In particular, any analysis that showcases the significance and agency of STS in examining diverse public engagements with science is welcomed. Single paper submissions should be in the form of abstracts of up to 250 words. They should include the paper's main arguments, methods, and contributions to STS. Annual Digital Culture Conference / King's College London - Friday 15th May 2020 Meme has become a by-word of contemporary digital culture. This term has been used to described simplified contents such as captioned macro pictures, short-videos, recurring phrases and all sorts of internet fads that we find on social media. With their penchant for humour and sarcasm, their remixability, irony and recursivity, memes are an interesting object of study because they seem to embody much of what is unique about digital culture vis-a-vis pre-digital cultures. Furthermore, they have become the privileged means through which all sorts of new online contents travel, from extremist propaganda, to social and political issue formation, to celebrity fandom and trolling. What does the prominence of internet memes tell us about our society at a time of profound crises of capitalism? What do some of memes' recurring characters such as the Wojaks, Virgin vs. Chad and all sorts of variations on Spongebob and BoJack Horseman, tell us about the emerging fears and preoccupations of our society? Are memes simply a neutral medium that can fit any content, or do they carry their own bias and specificities? And if so what is the dominant cultural spirit of memes? Are they the reflection of an hyper-reflective society that cannot take itself seriously and which is caught into self-introspection and presentism? Or do they offer hope of constructive self-criticism and potentials for social and political imagination? Building on emerging research, this conference will explore the broader societal implications of memes and meme culture, and what they can tell us about digital cultures, politics and societies in the contemporary moment. Our conference will explore the role of memes in our society, exploring a number of themes and perspectives, including but not limited to: * memes linguistics – namely the grammar, tropes and rhetorics inherent to memes; * meme characters – namely the meaning of some recurring meme figures such as the Wojaks and what kind of content they convey; * memers – the nature, identity and work of people producing memes; * the forms and formats of memes – including the rise of meme formats (including through tools such as “Make a Meme”, “Meme Generator”) and how video, text and all sorts of cultural contents besides captioned images are becoming “meme-like”; * “memospheres” – including methods and approaches for large-scale studies of online memes, as well as emerging archives, repositories and memory practices for documenting meme culture (e.g. “Know Your Meme”) * memes as “networked content” and “platformised content” – and how memes as an emerging form of cultural production shape and are shaped by the logics, economics, temporalities, grammars and vernaculars of social media platforms, chat apps, the web and other online spaces * The art of memes - are memes an art form? what do the politics of memetic aesthetics tell us about memetic culture and politics? Dear List, The 2020 ANU RSSS Data Sprint will be held 18-21 February, with the topic "Incivility on Social Media". We will focus on approaches for conceptualising incivility in online discussions (relating to, for example, politics), and the use of computational data and methods to analyse its existence and impact. Data Sprints are inspired by hackathons organised by the open source community, and are workshops in which participants from diverse backgrounds meet physically and collaborate intensively on a pre-determined subject and dataset. The Data Sprint has the following format: - Tuesday 18th & Wednesday 19th: Master classes on the collection and analysis of social network and text data from social media (with primary focus on the R statistical software) - Thursday 20th and Friday 21st: Data Sprint We are inviting participation from PhD students and ECRs. It is possible to attend the master classes and/or data sprint. *Apologies for cross-posting* Recounting Algorithms: A Workshop on Critical Algorithm Studies in the Library University of Toronto Mississauga Library May 7-8, 2020 https://www.recounting.net/ Call for Proposals How can libraries and archives best contribute to emerging critical discourses around algorithms, machine learning, and artificial intelligence? Recounting Algorithms is a two-day workshop, supported by the Council on Library and Information Resources and hosted by the University of Toronto Mississauga Library, that aims to enrich the intersections of critical algorithm studies and academic librarianship. Efforts to historicize, culturally situate, and foreground algorithmic systems as manifestations of bias and power have flourished recently. Work in this area has contributed important insights into the often oppressive operational conditions of systems used to automate tasks such as hiring, criminal risk assessment, supply chain management, web page ranking, and surveillance. The robustness of this growing field of inquiry is demonstrated in the varied institutional backgrounds of those who have contributed to it—they include journalists, artists, advocates, and academic researchers from across the disciplinary spectrum. Librarians and archivists are beginning to incorporate aspects of this critical discourse through projects that advance algorithmic literacy and initiatives, like Information Maintainers, that emphasize the intersection of information technology, data governance, and social justice. Relatedly, initiatives such as Emulation as a Service and Collections as Data suggest new services and infrastructures that might facilitate analysis of algorithmic systems. We invite proposals for pedagogical resources, creative projects, and library services that explore how libraries can support and build on investigations of algorithmic systems (including, machine learning and AI) and their enabling social conditions. While proposals should be oriented toward the library as a context for sustaining and supporting instruction and critical inquiry, we encourage submissions from non-librarians, particularly from educators, researchers, graduate students, artists, journalists and advocates. Potential themes include but are not limited to: * Projects to collect, preserve, and curate materials relevant to the study of algorithmic systems. * Resources for addressing emerging aspects of information and digital literacy related to machine learning and artificial intelligence. * Projects that reframe core values and practices (such as access and literacy) in light of work from critical algorithm studies. Invited workshop participants will present their proposals (in draft or prototype form) and engage in workshop activities to refine and develop them using constructive input from the group. Workshopped projects will be shared as an online resource following the workshop. Submissions Submissions should include a project abstract (500-word max) and bio (50 word max) for each presenter. Hi AoIRists! We are pleased to invite you to attend our next event 'The digital canon: Key texts in digital ethnography' on Thursday 30th January, 6-7:30pm GMT, either in person or via livestream. This session takes the form of a collaborative workshop as we invite scholars of digital ethnography and enthusiasts to join us in discussing ‘what is canon?’ in digital ethnography. As qualitative research departments around the world begin to pay more attention to digital ethnography as a method but teaching on the subject remains in its infancy, we aim to develop a reading list of essential, exemplary, and exciting digital ethnographic research. We’ll be tackling such subjects as method, ethics, theory, as well as different directional interests within the genre such as gaming, labour, visual culture, new modes of sociality, and other emerging themes. We will be sharing the compiled reading list out to our full mailing list afterwards, in hopes that this will be a very useful document for all of our members. This session is designed to benefit both those researchers with a strong background in the relevant literature looking to develop a reading list and scholars new to the genre wanting to know where to start. If you do not have a list of readings already then you are still welcome to attend.
