Many of the issues currently being debated in relation to technology and science begun as debates in-between Marxist intellectuals, notably concerning the status of science and ideology critique. By returning to this history and to Marxist theoretical resources, new insights can be gained when addressing STS questions. This panel invites presentations exploring the Marxist roots of STS as well as new, theoretical work broadly inspired by Marxism. Much of the research at the intersection of social media and marketing focuses on micro-level consumer behavior. However, the implications may have a bigger impact at the market system level. Thus, this track seeks to expand understanding of the role of social media within the broader macromarketing discourse. In line with the conference theme of transitioning markets, contributors to this track should think boldly and broadly about the role of social media in creating, supporting, transforming, and disassembling market systems. This track invites submissions that critically examine how the emergence and evolution of social media and digital consumer culture are reshaping marketing, market systems, and society. Contributors are encouraged to explore a broad range of social media and their interplay with market systems and society across a range of functions: * transactional (e.g., Venmo, eBay, GoFundMe, Patreon) * relational/social (e.g., WhatsApp, Tinder, Ancestry) * informational (e.g., Wikipedia, Reddit, TripAdvisor) * entertainment (e.g., Spotify, Pokemon Go, TikTok) Exploration of non-Western markets and culturally specific social media are strongly encouraged. The Digital University Network has stressed the role of new technologies in transforming practice within the university. The Platform University network has explored the cultural political economy and organisational sociology of the digital platforms which are increasingly ubiquitous within higher education. Call for Applications: MA Data, Culture and Society (University of Westminster)

The Westminster School of Media and Communication welcomes applications to its interdisciplinary MA programme in Data, Culture and Society. We live in an age where almost everything of what we do is connected to data. Big data and datafication pose great opportunities but also risks for contemporary societies. This new MA course addresses, explores and creatively utilises this transformation. We place an emphasis on current and future technologies and practices such as algorithms, artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain, data analytics and data mining, the Internet of Things, and others. The programme is part of the School's Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI<https://camri.ac.uk/>) which is home to around 30 researchers and 65 doctoral students. It has been a leading centre of media and communications research in the UK for almost 30 years. CAMRI is noted for its strong international dimension and its focus on critical media research, with interests in the study of digital and social media, the political economy of communications, global and transnational media, media policy studies, media and activism, and media history. The panel is included in the section "Current Research and Challenges on Political Participation and Mobilization", endorsed by the ECPR Standing Group on Participation and Mobilisation. All the best, Elena *** Gender-oriented mobilizations and social movements All over the globe, we are witnessing increasing levels of mobilization that address sex, gender and sexuality from different angles. On the one hand, from Latin America to the US, Europe, Africa and Asia, women's, feminist and transfeminist, as well as LGBTQI movements are struggling offline as much as online to reclaim equal rights for all gender subjectivities, and to end all forms of gender-based violence, abuse and discrimination. On the other hand, conservative and reactionary groups are mobilizing worldwide and crossdimensionally in the name of the "natural family", to defend traditional and binary gender-related roles, opposing any attempt to deconstruct or question them as well as revamping anti-abotion and pro-life claims. Also, gender-related issues become, more or less instrumentally, part of political parties' programmes and strategies thus opening complex entwinments between grassroots mobilizations and institutional politics. This panel explores political participation and mobilization around the politics of sex, gender and sexuality. It collects papers that address the multifaceted nature of participation endeavors in this domain looking at dynamics that: i) cut across multiple spaces (the grassroots, political institutions and the space opened up by digital media); ii) are carried out in different modes (formal political alliances, social movements, online discussion networks); iii) are aimed at overcoming power unbalances amongst genders or, conversely, aspire at restoring a social and political order grounded in sexual dimorphism. Organizers: Filippo Trevisan (American University), Ariadne Vromen (University of Sydney), Michael Vaughan (University of Sydney) Storytelling is central to the persuasion and mobilization strategies of advocacy organizations, activist groups, NGOs, political parties, and campaigns. However, technological, communicative, and political changes have challenged traditional storytelling practices and incentivized significant innovation in this area in recent years. Changes in technology have transformed the scale and pace at which individual stories can be collected, digitally archived, curated, and then distributed through online platforms. Changes in communication and politics have increased the emphasis on personalized advocacy strategies targeted at affective publics (Papacharissi, 2015), as campaigners seek to navigate an increasingly fragmented and polarised information environment. Researchers today face a challenge in representing both the continuity in the narrative dimension of politics while also interrogating emerging and impactful innovations. This raises important questions about power dynamics and representations associated with changing storytelling practices, roles, and relationships between individual storytellers, organizations, and social groups in a constantly evolving media landscape. These questions are relevant to multiple related fields including, among others, the sociology of political communications (Polletta 2006), policy studies (Jones, Shanahan and McBeth 2014) journalism studies (Polletta and Callahan 2017), and public interest communication. This one-day preconference pays attention to these questions and brings together researchers from multiple disciplinary perspectives to discuss the impact of changing storytelling practices on individuals, groups, organizations, target publics, and public discourse more broadly. We welcome submissions from theoretical and empirical inquiries that examine the following areas: * Reconciling conceptualizations of storytelling from intersecting perspectives in political life: in particular interest groups, social movements, NGOs, parties and political campaigns, as well as journalism; * The impact of evolving digital communication technologies, including but not limited to social media, mobile devices, and database technology on the practice of persuasive storytelling; * How publics and citizens respond to stories; * The role of storytelling in response to changing political and media contexts, in particular the evolution of information consumption habits and the rise of “fake news;” * The significance and impact of advocacy storytelling on the (in)visibility of groups that are traditionally marginalized and under-represented in public discourse (e.g. gender, LGBTQI+, race, ethnicity, disability, etc.); * The outcomes of storytelling in politics, such as successes or failures in public policy; * The ethics of storytelling and the power relationship between advocacy organizations and individual storytellers; * Storytelling in a comparative and global context, such as the diffusion of storytelling practices between political actors and countries, as well as their relationship with culture and media environments; * Innovative methodological approaches to study persuasive storytelling and analyze its impact.
