Where: King’s College London (The Strand, King’s Building, room K2.31 Nash Lecture Theatre, London WC2R 2LS) When: Wednesday, 5 February, 17:30 to 19:00 (followed by a wine reception) Details: Ethical Tech: Bias, Algorithms and Social Justice with Dr Shauna Concannon and Dr Clara Crivellaro (chaired by Dr Zeena Feldman, KCL) 'Beginning with Bias: Unpacking the Complexities of Developing Ethical AI Systems' Dr Shauna Concannon (CRASSH, University of Cambridge) Language-based Artificially Intelligent systems are typically trained on linguistic data generated by people; consequently, they routinely reinforce existing social biases. The European Commission’s guidance on trustworthy AI instructs that socially constructed biases must be removed from datasets used to train AI systems. However, the biases inherent in linguistic data are vast and varied, and developing a balanced and unbiased dataset may be practically impossible to implement. Furthermore, debiasing as a concept is opaque and what it means in practice for language-based systems is unclear. The goal of bias removal is to ensure systems operate fairly, but it also involves instigating a conscientious change from how language is used and represented (in the relevant dataset) to how it should be. In this talk I will explore the ethical and societal implications of artificially intelligent language-related technologies. Drawing on critical and feminist theoretical perspectives, and insights from practical efforts to mitigate bias from neural language systems, I will reflect on the complexities and considerations required to develop artificially intelligent systems that are ethical and just. 'Exploring fairness and justice in digital innovation' Dr Clara Crivellaro (University of Newcastle) In this talk, I will explore how a social justice perspective can help engage with the structures and dominant world views that underline much digital innovation and the replication of social issues. I will first position the work within current discourses on digital innovation, ethics and equity in order to outline critical lines of inquiry. Then, drawing from a range of projects and activities, I will discuss ways in which we can open up possibilities and proactively begin to create the conditions for technologies to support social innovation and social justice’ aspirations and goals. *6-year Postdoc in Computational Journalism / Media Audiences, Department of Media and Communications, LMU Munich, Germany* The Department of Media and Communication at LMU Munich offers a position, within the research and teaching unit of Professor Neil Thurman, as: Postdoc (m/f/d) in Computational Journalism / Media Audiences (subject to personal qualifications, the appointee will be appointed on the E 13 TV-L salary band, approximately €3837 - €5622 per month depending on experience) Terms: starting 1 April 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The period of employment is normally for a maximum of six years. The teaching requirement with this position is approximately 5 (academic) hours/week during the semesters (1 academic hour = 45 mins). The successful candidate will join Professor Thurman’s research and teaching unit, which is currently part-funded by the VolkswagenStiftung via two projects on computational journalism. These projects are researching topics including: the use of AI in local journalism; audiences’ perceptions of automated journalism; and the use of, and attitudes to, computational journalism in newsrooms. These projects involve collaboration with researchers, publishers, and technology providers in Germany and other countries. Professor Thurman’s research and teaching unit also focusses on media audience research more widely (‘ratings analysis’), including the behaviour of newspapers’, magazines’, and TV channels’ online and offline audiences. The unit is also involved in comparative journalism research through the Worlds of Journalism Study. Hi All: This is a big new initiative to support, recruit, and retain diverse faculty—one approach to solving the so-called “pipeline problem.” This is open to all disciplines, therefore appropriate to folks on this list. SUNY PRODiG Fellowship Application Promoting Recruitment, Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion and Growth across the SUNY Comprehensive Sector The Comprehensive Colleges of the State University of New York system (SUNY) invite applications for the PRODiG Pre/Post-Doctoral Fellowship. The SUNY PRODiG Fellowship Consortia represents a collaborative effort of the thirteen comprehensive colleges in the SUNY system (see below). Eligible candidates for this two-year program include late-stage ABDs or post-docs who are underrepresented minorities faculty in general and women faculty of all races in STEM fields. The focus of the collaborative is to introduce early-career diverse faculty to opportunities at a comprehensive college, and will provide outstanding mentorship and support to increase future success and retention as faculty. The program will provide intentional support toward degree completion, teaching experience in the individual’s field of expertise, and faculty development at one of the SUNY comprehensive colleges. PRODiG Fellows will receive a two-year non-renewable contract, travel allowances, summer research stipends, moving expenses, and reduced teaching load. Annual compensation is competitive. Fellows will be paired with a campus senior faculty member to help facilitate integration and support, and will be a part of a larger cohort of PRODiG Fellows across the SUNY system who will meet (both face-to-face and virtually) throughout the two-year fellowship. The fellowship is open to a wide range of fields. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited doctoral program in the U.S. or have completed an accredited doctoral program, and be authorized to work in the U.S. In order to be eligible, the applicant must have an approved dissertation proposal and have advanced to candidate status at their home institution (or have completed their dissertation). Post-doctoral applicants are also encouraged. Successful candidates will show evidence of outstanding academic achievement and promise as teachers and scholars. Candidates should have a capacity to respond in pedagogically productive ways to the learning needs of diverse students attending a comprehensive college. Applicants should submit a current C.V. and letter of intent describing the applicant's interest in teaching at a comprehensive college; a letter from the dissertation advisor commenting on the applicant’s performance, potential, and expected time to degree; and a transcript. Applicants should review the websites below for academic programs and campus locations. Within their letter of intent, applicants should include three to five campus preferences. Application review will begin January 27 for rolling admissions. Additional information will be provided upon hire, including details on a scheduled retreat in June/July 2020. CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS ----------------------------------------------------- ICWSM-2020 invites proposals for Workshop at the 14th International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM). Workshop participants will have the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with a selected focus -- providing an informal setting for active exchange among researchers and developers from a wide range of disciplines, including the social science and computer science. Workshops are an excellent forum for exploring emerging approaches and task areas, bridging gaps between the social sciences and computing, and elucidating results of exploratory research. Members of all segments of the social media research community are encouraged to submit proposals. To foster interaction and exchange of ideas, the workshops will be kept small, with up to 40 participants. The format of workshops will be determined by their organizers. We encourage workshops that promote different types of activities, including challenges, games, and brainstorming and networking sessions. We discourage workshops that are structured as “mini-conferences” dominated by long talks and short discussions. Workshops should leave ample time for discussions and interaction between the participants and should also encourage the submission and presentation of position papers that discuss new research ideas. The workshop should have the potential to attract the interest of researchers in computer science and social science. Proposals involving people of different backgrounds in the organizing committee and addressing topics at the intersection of different disciplines will have a higher chance of acceptance. Workshop organizers who want to publish the papers from their workshop (or significant portions of it) will have the opportunity to do so through a venue TBD. SUBMISSION FORMAT ---------------------------------------------------- Workshop proposals should include the following information: * Proposal Content: Proposals for workshops should be no more than five (5) pages in length (10pt, single column, with reasonable margins), written in English, and should contain the following: * A concise title: The names, affiliations, and contact information of the organizing committee. A main contact author should be specified. A typical proposal should include no more than four co-chairs. * An indication as to whether the workshop should be considered for a half-day or full-day meeting. * A short abstract describing the scope and main objective of the workshop. Identify the specific issues and research questions the workshop will focus on, with a brief discussion of why the topic is of particular interest at this time and for which research communities. * A two/three paragraph description of the workshop topic and themes. * A description of the proposed workshop format and a detailed list of proposed activities, with special emphasis on those activities that distinguish it from a mini-conference (e.g., games, brainstorming sessions, challenges, group activities). * An approximate timeline of the activities, including submission deadlines and evaluation. Include whether you will have an early-bird deadline for submissions to allow extra time for visa applications. * A description of how workshop submissions will be evaluated and selected (invited contributions, peer review, etc.). In case a PC is needed, provide a tentative list of the members. * Historical information about the workshop, if available. Short description of the previous editions reporting highlights and details about the approximate number of attendees and number of submissions. * A list of other related workshops held previously at related conferences, if any (list does not have to be exhaustive), together with a brief statement on how the proposed workshop differs from or how it follows-up on work presented at previous workshops. * A short bio for each member of the organizing committee, including a description of their relevant expertise.
