We will be hosting Rik Adriaans (UCL Digital Anthropology) for a talk titled Meme-Tinted Glasses: Locating the Liberal Self in Digital Postsocialism. Rik's talk will be followed by discussion of his work and broader issues around digital ethnographic research of visual culture. Challenging the digital dualism of offline and online, memes are increasingly referenced, reappropriated and performed in a wide range of settings beyond the scope of social media platforms. Drawing on examples from Hungary and Armenia, this presentation examines how memetic sensibilities have become central to the ways in which liberal youth orient themselves in the everyday politics of postsocialist transformations. It explores how perceived remnants of socialism and elements of the illiberal present are turned into a source of the liberal self by apprehending them through the ironic sensibilities of the internet meme form. No longer bound by digital devices such as smartphones, the memeification of reality is key to the everyday negotiation of dichotomies of capitalist modernity versus the socialist past, orient versus occident, as well as class antagonisms and rural-urban divisions. Rik Adriaans is a Teaching Fellow in Digital Anthropology at UCL Anthropology. He is interested in questions of media and mediation, (trans)nationalism, post-socialism and public culture with a regional focus on Armenia and the global Armenian diaspora. His doctoral thesis was a multi-sited ethnography of the media circuits connecting the Armenian diaspora of Los Angeles to post-Soviet transition. On *June 29-30, 2020*, the Centre for Research in Communication and Culture at Loughborough University (United Kingdom) will host the sixth conference of the International Journal of Press/Politics, focused on academic research on the relation between media and political processes around the world. Professor Young Mie Kim from the University of Wisconsin will deliver a keynote lecture. A selection of the best full papers presented at the conference will be published in the journal after peer review. The deadline for submission of abstracts is *March 13, 2020*. Attendees will be notified of acceptance by *March 20, 2020*. Full papers based on accepted abstracts will be due *June 12, 2020*. The conference brings together scholars conducting internationally-oriented or comparative research on the intersection between news media and politics around the world. It aims to provide a forum for academics from a wide range of disciplines, countries, and methodological approaches to advance research in this area. Examples of relevant topics include the political implications of current changes in media systems, including the increasing role of digital platforms; the importance of digital media for engaging with news and politics; analysis of the factors affecting the quality of political information and public discourse; studies of the role of entertainment and popular culture in how people engage with current affairs; studies of relations between political actors and journalists; analyses of the role of visuals and emotion in the production and processing of public information; and research on political communication during and beyond elections by government, political parties, interest groups, and social movements. The journal and the conference have a particular interest in studies that adopt comparative approaches, represent substantial theoretical or methodological advances, or focus on parts of the world that are under-researched in the international English language academic literature. At the same time, social and political scientists have been working on creating socio-political event databases for their studies for decades. The need for collecting data for socio-political science studies has been satisfied by manual, semi-automatic, and automatic approaches. However, the results yielded by these approaches to date are either not of sufficient quality or require tremendous effort to be replicated on new data. On the one hand, manual or semi-automatic methods require high-quality human effort; on the other hand, state-of-the-art event detection systems are not accurate to the point that their output may be directly usable, without human moderation. Finally, the NLP community has not achieved a consensus on the treatment of events both in terms of task definition and appropriate techniques for their detection. Given the aforementioned limitations, there is an increasing tendency to rely on machine learning (ML) and NLP methods to deal better with the vast amount and variety of data to be collected. This workshop aims to inspire the emergence of innovative technological and scientific solutions in the field of event detection and event metadata extraction from news, as well as the development of evaluation metrics for event recognition. Moreover, automated tool performances need to be reproducible and comparable. Although a tremendous effort is being spent on creating socio-political event databases such as ACLED, GDELT, MMAD, and ICEWS, there has not been much progress in harmonization across event schemas and tasks. This limitation causes the definition of the events and automated event information collection tool performances to be restricted to single projects. Consequently, the lack of comparable and reproducible settings hinders progress on this task. We invite contributions from researchers in NLP, ML and AI involved in automated event data collection, as well as researchers in Social and Political Sciences, Conflict Analysis and Peace studies, who make use of this kind of data for their analytical work. Our goal is to enable the emergence of innovative NLP/IE solutions that can help to deal with the current stream of information, manage the risks of information overload, identify different sources and perspectives, and provide unitary and intelligible representations of the larger and long-term storylines behind news articles. Our workshop will provide a venue for discussing the creation and facilitation of language resources in the social and political sciences domain. Social and political scientists will be interested in reporting and discussing their desiderata from automated tools in comparison to their traditional coding approaches. Computational linguistics and machine learning practitioners and researchers will benefit from being challenged by real-world use cases, in terms of event data extraction, representation and aggregation. We invite work on all aspects of automated coding of socio-political events from mono- or multi-lingual news sources. ICA 2020 Pre-conference call for papers: Storytelling, persuasion and mobilization in the digital age Date: Wednesday 20 May 2020, 9:00am-5:00pm Location: Sydney Policy Lab, University of Sydney Sponsoring ICA Divisions: Activism, Communication and Social Justice Interest Group; Political Communication Division; Public Relations Division. Organizers: Filippo Trevisan (American University), Ariadne Vromen (University of Sydney), Michael Vaughan (University of Sydney) Storytelling is central to the persuasion and mobilization strategies of advocacy organizations, activist groups, NGOs, political parties, and campaigns. However, technological, communicative, and political changes have challenged traditional storytelling practices and incentivized significant innovation in this area in recent years. Changes in technology have transformed the scale and pace at which individual stories can be collected, digitally archived, curated, and then distributed through online platforms. Changes in communication and politics have increased the emphasis on personalized advocacy strategies targeted at affective publics (Papacharissi, 2015), as campaigners seek to navigate an increasingly fragmented and polarised information environment. Researchers today face a challenge in representing both the continuity in the narrative dimension of politics while also interrogating emerging and impactful innovations. This raises important questions about power dynamics and representations associated with changing storytelling practices, roles, and relationships between individual storytellers, organizations, and social groups in a constantly evolving media landscape. These questions are relevant to multiple related fields including, among others, the sociology of political communications (Polletta 2006), policy studies (Jones, Shanahan and McBeth 2014) journalism studies (Polletta and Callahan 2017), and public interest communication. This one-day preconference pays attention to these questions and brings together researchers from multiple disciplinary perspectives to discuss the impact of changing storytelling practices on individuals, groups, organizations, target publics, and public discourse more broadly. We welcome submissions from theoretical and empirical inquiries that examine the following areas: * Reconciling conceptualizations of storytelling from intersecting perspectives in political life: in particular interest groups, social movements, NGOs, parties and political campaigns, as well as journalism; * The impact of evolving digital communication technologies, including but not limited to social media, mobile devices, and database technology on the practice of persuasive storytelling; * How publics and citizens respond to stories; * The role of storytelling in response to changing political and media contexts, in particular the evolution of information consumption habits and the rise of “fake news;” * The significance and impact of advocacy storytelling on the (in)visibility of groups that are traditionally marginalized and under-represented in public discourse (e.g. gender, LGBTQI+, race, ethnicity, disability, etc.); * The outcomes of storytelling in politics, such as successes or failures in public policy; * The ethics of storytelling and the power relationship between advocacy organizations and individual storytellers; * Storytelling in a comparative and global context, such as the diffusion of storytelling practices between political actors and countries, as well as their relationship with culture and media environments; * Innovative methodological approaches to study persuasive storytelling and analyze its impact. There is a vacancy for a PhD position at the Department of Information Science and Media Studies within Information Science in the field of Behavioral Data Science and Recommender Systems. The position is for 4 years and 25 % of the time is compulsory duties at the department. We are especially looking for candidates who want to work on the research frontiers of behavioral data science with an application to recommender systems; project proposals on online data mining and predictive modelling with an application to recommender systems are particularly welcome, but the position is also open for other qualified applicants within other areas of data science and recommender systems research.
