IUI submissions should address HCI challenges using machine intelligence and consider both computational and human- centric aspects. As AI becomes more integrated into everyday technology, understanding its role in meeting human needs is vital for developing effective and responsible systems. This conference fosters collaboration among experts from diverse fields to tackle significant issues in AI and HCI through discussions, workshops, and networking sessions. UI 2026 attracted a record number of submissions for the main conference (561 full paper submissions after an initial submission of 697 abstracts). Posters Posters provide an opportunity for sharing valuable last-minute ideas, eliciting useful feedback on early-stage work and fostering discussions and collaborations among colleagues. We invite submissions relevant to all conference topics. All submissions should convey a scientific result or work in progress that is not yet ready to be published as a full-length research paper at a refereed conference. The page limit for poster papers is 4 pages (references do not count toward the page limit). Submitting a draft poster along with your submission is not required, but is recommended. Accepted poster papers will appear in the companion proceedings of the conference. Each accepted contribution is expected to be presented in person during the poster session. Demos The demonstration track complements the overall program of the conference. Demonstrations show implementations of novel, interesting, and important intelligent user interface concepts or systems. We invite submissions relevant to intelligent user interfaces and which address, but are not limited to, the topics of the conference. All submissions are intended to convey a scientific result or work in progress and should not be advertisements for commercial software packages. The page limit for demo papers is 4 pages (references do not count toward the page limit). Authors further need to submit a video (max. 5 mins) along with their demo paper to showcase their work. Accepted demo papers will be presented as interactive demonstrations at IUI and published in the companion proceedings of the conference. Each accepted contribution is expected to be presented in person during the demo sessions. Usage of Generative AI All submissions must comply with the ACM policy on the usage of GenAI: the April 2023 ACM Policy on Authorship and Frequently Asked Questions. Text generated from a large-scale language model (LLM), such as ChatGPT, must be clearly marked where such tools are used for purposes beyond editing the author’s own text. Authors should include a “GenAI Usage Disclosure” section, right before the references, to provide full disclosure of all use of GenAI tools in all stages of the research (including the code and data) and the writing. This section, together with the references, will not be counted toward the word limit. While we do not anticipate using tools on a large scale to detect LLM-generated text, we will investigate submissions brought to our attention and desk reject papers where LLM use is not clearly marked. Earlier GIG-ARTS meetings have addressed themes such as “Global Internet Governance as a Diplomacy Issue” (Paris, 2017), “Overcoming Inequalities in Internet Governance” (Cardiff, 2018), “Europe as a Global Player in Internet Governance” (Salerno, 2019), “Online Information Governance” (Vienna, 2021), “Global Internet Governance and International Human Rights” (Nicosia, 2022), and “The Governance of Cybersecurity: Resilience, Human Rights and Democracy” (Padua, 2023), “Thirty Years of Multistakeholderism in Internet Governance: Assessments and Prospects” (The Hague 2024), “The Rise of Digital Sovereignty: Ambiguities and Challenges” (Salerno, 2025). *GIG-ARTS 2026* The Tenth GIG-ARTS Conference, to be held at the Dublin City University on 14th-15th May 2026, takes as its main theme *“Digital Futures, Sustainable Freedoms: Rights, Responsibilities and Governance.”* >From artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructures to social media platforms and blockchain technologies, digital technologies are commonly presented as drivers of green strategies, economic growth and societal well-being. However, these systems also pose essential challenges to society and the environment. Indeed, the complex, resource-intensive supply chain of digital technologies has been underrepresented in dominant political narratives. Digital infrastructures demand high amounts of energy. The extraction of essential raw materials involved in the development of digital devices and the powering of data centres imposes further ecological burdens and creates geopolitical dependencies. Finally, the accelerated turnover of devices generates a concerning amount of e-waste on a global scale. These factors require us to consider whether the envisioned digital futures align with the pressing demands for ecological sustainability, democratic development, and the needs of future generations. Amid an unprecedented AI boom, regulatory and policy frameworks have thus far focused on privacy, ethics and broad human rights compliance. However, limited attention has been given to the environmental impact of AI systems. More recently, the Declaration on Digital Rights and Principles for the Digital Decade of the European Union introduced a chapter discussing aspects of digital sustainability. Still, the jury is out on the true effectiveness of these soft law instruments. More importantly, the European AI Act has been criticised by scholars and civil society: while it establishes reporting obligations on AI systems, it falls short of fully integrating sustainability concerns into the regulatory framework of AI and digital technologies more broadly. This suggests that the digital and green transition have been approached as siloed, rather than truly interconnected processes. The conference theme highlights the Janus-faced nature of digital innovation, equally generating opportunities and risks. On one hand, digital technologies have the potential to strengthen freedoms by enabling democratic participation, enhancing transparency, promoting and advancing sustainable development goals. On the other hand, pursuing digital progress without sufficient attention to its environmental and social implications risks compromising the very freedoms it aims to promote. Infrastructures created without sustainability considerations can exacerbate inequalities, exhaust natural resources, contribute to climate instability and enable a renewed wave of colonial and extractivist regimes of power. These tensions underscore issues of responsibility and governance. Who must ensure that the enhancement and operation of digital technologies follow key principles of sustainability? How should governments regulate tech corporations whose activities have high environmental costs? What commitments should organizations undertake concerning the supply chain of technologies? How might individuals, communities, and civil society play a role in shaping digital ecosystems that both respect planetary boundaries and uphold human rights? How to reconcile technological progress with the rights of current and future generations? Understanding digital rights requires a holistic approach that incorporates aspects of energy consumption, waste reduction, labour rights and the overall sustainability of our digital environments. Therefore, there is a need to balance the benefits and impact of technological development with ecological constraints and responsibilities. The Tenth GIG-ARTS Conference seeks to foster a multi-disciplinary discussion regarding the intersections of digital development, environmental concerns, and transnational governance. We encourage contributions that resonate with both theoretical and practical perspectives, gathering insights from fields including law, political science, communication, policy studies, economics, technology studies, environmental research, and beyond. Participants are invited to examine the inconsistencies and synergies that arise between technological innovation, human rights, and environmental responsibility, and to develop governance approaches that can integrate digital rights with sustainable futures. By gathering scholars and practitioners, the conference aims to enhance understanding of how digital futures can be created and governed in ways that conform with universal rights and values while addressing burning environmental challenges. It represents an appeal to revisit the equilibrium of rights and duties in our current digital society, and to devise governance approaches that can guarantee freedoms and wellbeing for future generations. Dear All, I’m reaching out to share the Call for Papers and Contributions for our upcoming Tech Abuse Conference, taking place 19–21 May 2026 in London: https://www.genderandtech.net/conference. Together with my team at the UCL Gender and Tech Research Lab, we’re working to convene a diverse, global community committed to understanding and addressing technology-facilitated gender-based violence and abuse. This includes not only academics, but also practitioners, survivors and survivor-led organisations, policymakers, technologists, legal experts, educators, journalists, NGOs, law enforcement, industry professionals, activists, and many others. Our goal is to create a hands-on, practical, and action-oriented event — one that bridges research, policy, and practice across sectors, disciplines, and borders. We invite participants to come with open minds: ready to expand horizons, engage with unfamiliar communities, and be challenged — gently but meaningfully. The programme is intentionally still in development. Tackling technology-facilitated abuse requires a holistic approach: not just academic research, not just legislative reform, not just technical solutions, and not just frontline support. It demands all of these — in dialogue with one another. That’s where you and your organisations come in! Applied rhetoric is: a rhetorically grounded method for and study of action-oriented research, teaching, and service in live situations that solves problems and achieves positive ends in communities. ARC offers a para-professional space for support, feedback, collaboration, and encouragement to those at any stage of their careers (from students to retirees) who seek to solve problems and achieve positive ends in communities using applied rhetoric. Our summer symposia allow us to examine how rhetoric is enacted in our professional and public spaces. Symposium presentations have covered the realms of applied rhetoric (AR) in healthcare, academic programming, digital content spaces, physical public spaces, the media, and the classroom. Topics have been as varied as public memory projects, rhetorical activism, free speech rules, international censorship, and historical legal testimony. Since the symposium began in 2018, the world we live in has dramatically changed in many ways—for better and for worse. Accordingly, ARC sees a need to reconsider how we conceptualize how we “do” rhetorical work in our communities and classrooms. ARC’s fifth summer symposium will continue to build on the foundations laid during our previous meetings, as we come together to further develop and define the ideas of applied rhetoric. To do this, we ask symposium participants to emphasize how people (researchers, teachers, practitioners, activists, leaders, community members, and everyone in between) bring rhetoric into the world. We are interested in diverse works that discuss how we bring rhetoric into the world. Potential topics of interest may include, but are not limited to: What does it look like for academics to take their knowledge of rhetoric into public spaces? How can we, as both community members and rhetoricians, be a force for good in the world as we put our rhetoric into action? How do community members enact rhetoric and rhetorical principles to get things done? How do rhetorical principles affect ideas, events, and/or outcomes in nonprofit organizations? How do people enact rhetoric in legal spaces for the good or ill of all involved? How do academics encourage and enable students to enact rhetoric out in the world, either on their own or as part of an academic enterprise? How does one learn to do rhetoric out in the world? How does one teach students to do rhetoric out in the world? How do people enact rhetoric online to affect positive or negative change? How can positive change be further amplified or developed? How can negative change be combated or counteracted? How do people balance the desire to enact rhetoric out in the world with the other professional and non-professional commitments that they have? The Applied Rhetoric Symposium was built on foundations of collaboration, coordination, networking, and friendship. In the symposium, we seek to embody these concepts by providing community-building opportunities for those who enact and study applied rhetoric. The symposium itself consists of multiple plenary sessions focused on the presentation of scholarly work to an audience of colleagues. The presentations consist of new “works in progress,” concrete results of established research, and/or what we call “Quick Hits—Rhetoric in Practice” (all described below) with ample time to discuss with the audience after each session. FORMATS Works in Progress (30 minutes each) Not a presentation or a workshop, Works in Progress sessions are a time to get feedback on how to finish a project that seems stuck or how to start working on a promising idea that seems overwhelming. Traditional (20 minutes each) You know what we are talking about. Strict time limits, but these presentations will be followed by an extended open discussion after each set of three traditional presentations. NEW THIS YEAR! The Write-to-Publish Track The Write-to-Publish track offers a pathway from conference presentation to peer-reviewed publication in POROI. This track integrates conference vetting with the journal's peer review process. Presentations will be scheduled with Traditional presentations (20 minutes each). Feel free to reach out to me directly if you have any questions. > Interrogating Trust & Safety > Over the last several decades, digital platforms have increasingly pervaded almost every sphere of our lives (e.g. commerce, dating, health, education, employment, entertainment, networking, communication). Consequently, platform-side Trust & Safety—a professional field dedicated to user safety and platform integrity—has become indispensable. Though largely behind-the-scenes, T&S teams are charged with enhancing the brand perceptions and protecting the user bases of large platforms and startups alike. It’s a unique practice that is both a guarded specialty as well as a matter of public interest. > > But what do we really know about the history of trust and safety (broadly construed) or the development of platform-side Trust & Safety? While related topics have begun to garner more public attention, scholarly work that thoughtfully historicizes the development of the field and/or profession, the role of companies and/or platforms, the nature of the relationships between a variety of stakeholders in the space, the evolving nature of practices, processes, tools, and/or products, and historical precedents for and impacts of regulatory acts is lacking. Given the rapidly evolving nature of the ecosystem and the centrality of work across the whole of the internet—from domain registration to content moderation—we propose a special issue of Internet Histories dedicated to topics directly related to historicizing all aspects of trust and safety: the ecosystem, field, domain, practice, protocols and tools, and profession. We encourage authors to interrogate trust and safety from a range of perspectives, prioritizing academic rigor and historical dimensions. > > Possible topics may include: > > The professionalization of T&S. > Early platform-side T&S teams and operations. > How trust and safety work has evolved across specific regions and geographies. > Histories of T&S beyond content moderation (i.e., other types of products/services such as ride-share, dating, and services apps; online marketplaces; and internet-connected devices). > Various harm/risk areas (e.g., child safety, terrorism/extremism, elections, or mis/disinformation) across decades. > How early T&S addressed technological impacts/affordances for communities in the 2000s, 2010s (before the term became widely adopted). > Origins and evolutions as maintenance or care work. > Gender and the history of T&S work (particularly in areas like child safety or technology-facilitated gender-based violence). > The role of nonprofit organizations and civil society in the shaping of platform-side T&S. > The history of regulatory decisions and their impact on current and future practices. > How, when, and why law enforcement and national security became involved in trust and safety. > The impacts of platform-side T&S on community moderators and managers. > This special issue will explore these questions—and many others—through a range of theoretical frames (for example, postcolonial, genealogical, historical materialist, feminist, STS, organizational development, cybernetic, international relations, disruption and hype cycles, world systems, globalization) and approaches (for example, archival, oral history, historiographic, commodity chain, ethnographic, social network, policy sciences) as proposed by authors. We are looking for projects at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary enquiry into AI and inequalities. Deadline: 14 Nov 2025 Online interviews: end Nov/early Dec 2025 Start: February 2026 Your doctoral research project will be designed by you to respond to the issues of difference and power in a time of “responsible AI.” Your application should reflect your existing knowledge and interest in the area, and identify clearly what you perceive to be a research need or gap. Clear proposals using interdisciplinary, innovative and critical methods, methodologies and lenses are particularly encouraged. Your proposal must demonstrate how the PhD project is grounded in contemporary debates around AI ethics and responsible AI, and crucially how social justice is at its heart.
