Existing models in research— grounded in the artisanal craft traditions, narratology, text-image correlation, and human-centered authorship— are struggling to account for this rapidly diversifying landscape. Craft-based approaches might appear resistant or inadequate in the face of new technological practices that recombine production, circulation, and reception through computational logics.The current moment compels a broader redefinition of comics as fundamentally technical objects. The boundaries that once separated comics from technical and operational systems are dissolving. To grasp the full scope of these developments, we must account for comics as sites where technological processes are not external influences but internal engines — where creation is entangled with computation, standardization, and new modes of mediation. As computational processes— from machine learning to synthetic image generation and communication systems powered by computer vision— increasingly shape the creation, distribution, and experience of comics, it is no longer sufficient to understand the medium solely through the lenses of narrative, visual storytelling, or artisanal craft. Recognizing comics as engineered configurations of information, relational diagrams, and experimental knowledge structures is not a speculative gesture; it is a necessary step for understanding the profound transformation underway in the medium’s ontology, practice, and future potential. Within this expanded computational landscape, comics increasingly function as sites of artistic research— experimental configurations that generate knowledge through making rather than merely representing it. As comics engage with computational systems, they become laboratories for investigating the material conditions of contemporary media production. These research-oriented practices extend beyond traditional academic boundaries. Rather than simply illustrating research findings, comics-as-research deploys their unique capacity for relational thinking— the medium’s inherent ability to orchestrate temporal, spatial, and conceptual relationships — to investigate how technical systems reshape creative labor, audience relations, and the very possibility of narrative meaning. This artistic research dimension positions comics not as objects of study but as active investigative tools, capable of generating insights about computational culture that emerge specifically through the medium’s hybrid technical-aesthetic operations. We are pleased to announce a two-day international conference on April 22-23, 2026 at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and at Uppsala University dedicated to examining the rapidly evolving landscape of comics. Rather than framing this transformation solely as a rupture, the conference seeks to situate it within a longer history of computational rationality— a lineage in which the medium has continuously negotiated the demands of efficiency, scalability, and technical constraint. Our aim is to critically rethink comics not as passive recipients of technological change, but as active computational configurations: media fundamentally entangled with systems of automation, standardization, and information processing. EXTENSION: New deadline October 30th Baltic Screen Media Review announces a Call for Papers titled “Knowledge Graphs and Contemporary Media: Power, Practice, Publics” Over the past decade, media have quietly become graph-shaped. Newsrooms, streaming platforms, archives, and social networks now depend on webs of entities - people, places, works, events - and the typed relations that connect them. Under labels such as linked data, the semantic web, and knowledge graphs, these infrastructures coordinate how content is produced, described, discovered, licensed, preserved, and increasingly generated by AI. They sit beneath the interfaces we see, but they structure what becomes visible, recommendable, and valuable. Understanding contemporary media, therefore, requires understanding the graphs that organise them. The rise of knowledge graphs in media is not an accident of technical fashion; it is the logical outcome of long trajectories in cataloguing, digitisation, and platformisation. Libraries and broadcasters moved from card catalogues to MARC and Dublin Core; heritage institutions spent two decades aligning authority files and opening collections; web companies standardised schema-based markup at scale; collaborative knowledge bases such as Wikidata turned entity curation into a public good; and audiovisual industries confronted the complexity of rights, versions, localisations, and windowing across global markets. In parallel, machine learning made structured, linked metadata indispensable: entity linking, recommendation, search, summarisation, and content moderation all perform better when grounded in persistent identifiers and interoperable ontologies. To all this was added the trust and provenance crises of the synthetic media era, which has led to a renewed emphasis on verifiable origin trails, signatures, and content credentials that are most useful when they are linked. The economics of attention, the politics of authenticity, and the pragmatics of large-scale automation all seem to converge on the need for shared, machine-readable meaning. These developments demand analysis from multiple angles. From the political economy of media, knowledge graphs can be read as new “coordination layers” that concentrate bargaining power and lock in ecosystems - or, alternatively, as public infrastructures that lower search and verification costs, widen market access, and enable plural discovery. Media industry studies can show how graphs reshape workflows: from pre-production knowledge bases and clearance graphs, to versioning and localisation, to explainable recommendation pipelines in the platform back-end. Media economics can evaluate the intangible asset value of metadata itself, model network effects that arise when catalogues interlink across firms and borders, and assess when openness produces positive externalities and when enclosure yields short-term rents but long-term fragility. For media semiotics, graphs offer a new instrument to study meaning circulation: intertextuality, world-building, genre drift, and translation across modalities can be traced as patterns of links among works, motifs, and characters. Audience and reception studies can examine how knowledge graph-grounded explanations and provenance labels affect trust and satisfaction, when serendipity expands or narrows horizons, and how fan communities co-produce knowledge that later feeds institutional graphs. Media archaeology could bring historical depth, showing how past documentation practices prefigure today’s ontologies and how reconciliation of “lost” entities can revive suppressed or minoritised histories. Science and Technology Studies could open the black box of standards and maintenance: ontologies are negotiated, versioned, and policed by communities; their categories include and exclude, often reproducing the centre–periphery dynamics of media culture. For media law and ethics, licensing and rights graphs raise questions about privacy and cross-jurisdictional compliance. Provenance frameworks aim to restore trust, yet their governance determines who can certify whom, under what terms, and at what cost. Finally, a public value perspective to media infrastructures asks how these infrastructures can be designed as durable, fair, and pluralistic, especially for small languages and small markets where linked openness may be the difference between invisibility and participation. This thematic issue takes linked data not as a niche technique but as a constitutive feature of contemporary media. We invite contributions from all the perspectives discussed above to open up the phenomenon and to illuminate the diverse implications that linked data has brought to contemporary media. Submissions may address, but are not limited to, the following topics: The role of linked data in organizing contemporary media ecosystems. Governance models for media knowledge infrastructures and their societal impacts. How linked data adoption reshapes news and platform discovery. How interoperability standards shape collaboration across media institutions. Cross-ID interoperability among broadcasters, archives, and streamers. Economic consequences of open vs. proprietary media metadata. Linked data, cultural diversity, and the visibility of small languages and regions. Audience trust and transparency in graph-enabled discovery and curation. Legal and ethical frameworks for graph-based media production and reuse. From catalogues to knowledge graphs: historical trajectories and lessons. Research methods for studying media with graph-based datasets. Public value and policy approaches to sustaining linked media data. Fan wikis as co-curators: aligning community and institutional graphs. Graph-aware recommenders and explainability in public service media. Mapping intertextuality and transmedia worlds via entity-relation graphs. Ontology politics: who defines genres, roles, and identities. Privacy-preserving linkage of audience data with content graphs under GDPR. Media archaeology of metadata: reconciling legacy catalogues into RDF. Event knowledge graphs for breaking-news verification. Authority alignment between knowledge graphs and cross-border memory. Knowledge graphs as coordinators in media innovation systems. Ethical risks of automated ontologies: bias, erasure, contested identities. The use of graphs for AI training. Hi everyone, Earlier this year PAIRS25 brought together over 250 researchers and practitioners on the fringes of the Paris AI Action Summit to explore cutting edge research and action on putting public voice at the centre of how we develop, govern and respond to or resist artificial intelligence. In February 2026 we’ll be back with PAIRS26 alongside the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi (and online). Over recent months we’ve been working with an amazing expanded programme committee to finalise plans and the Call for Abstracts, which is open. If you have practical case studies, critical evaluations or research agendas to share that address participatory approaches to AI then please do take a look! (*Abstract deadline 31st October*). PAIRS26 will be taking place both online (17th Feb) and in-person (18th Feb), as well as hosting a pre-event (15th Jan) as part of the road to the summit. Hello, I am very happy to invite you to the upcoming session in the community lecture series run by the Department of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths. The upcoming talk is on Wednesday 22nd October, 17:00-19:00 (BST), with Dr Jeremy Knox (University of Oxford) discussing his research about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and education. This will be held in person on the Goldsmiths campus at the Professor Stuart Hall Building (LG01) from 17:00-19:00. This talk will develop an experimental application of Agamben’s (2004) concept of the anthropological machine in order to examine the ways ‘human’ teaching is distinguished from the functioning of AI in policy and commercial ‘Ed Tech’ promotion. Examples of Department for Education (DfE) policy in the UK, as well as promotional material from OpenAI, will be analysed to suggest different ways in which the ‘human’ aspects of teaching are differentiated and justified, while advocating for widespread adoption of automated AI technologies across the education sector. Drawing on Agamben’s work, such efforts will be suggested, not only to be contradictory, fabricated, and overly simplistic accounts of conducive human-machine relations, but also to conceal a profound and troubling sub-divisioning of the teaching profession, with the potential to undermine public education. The talk will conclude by situating these educational concerns within the wider unravelling of social relationships exacerbated by AI, and gesture towards the more radical theories of hybrid human-technology entanglements that might inform a social justice orientation to teaching in an era of automated and data-driven technologies. *** Third Call for Contributions *** 39th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS 2026) June 3-5 2026, 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina, Limassol, Cyprus https://2026.cbms-conference.org<http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/GPLists_2021/lm.php?tk=YWlyLWwJCQlhaXItbEBs…> Attracting a worldwide audience, CBMS is the premier conference for computer-based medical systems, and one of the main conferences in the fields of medical informatics and biomedical informatics. CBMS allows the exchange of ideas and technologies between academic and industrial scientists. The scientific program of IEEE CBMS 2026 will consist of regular and special track sessions with technical contributions reviewed and selected by an international program committee, as well as, keynote talks and tutorials given by leading experts in their fields. The CBMS 2026 edition also aims to host high-quality papers about industry and real case applications as well as allow researchers leading international projects to show to the scientific community the main aims, goals, and results of their projects. We solicit submissions on previously unpublished research work. Please see the submission guidelines for further details. Submission Guidelines Papers must be submitted electronically using the EasyChair conference management system (see link below). All submissions will be peer-reviewed at least by two Program Committee members. All accepted papers (Regular, Short, and Posters) will be included in the conference proceedings and will be published by IEEE Xplore. Publication in proceedings is conditioned to the registration and presentation of the paper at the conference by one of the authors. Type of Submissions Each contribution must be prepared following the IEEE two-column format, whose template is available at https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates<http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/GPLists_2021/lm.php?tk=YWlyLWwJCQlhaXItbEBs…> . The authors may choose LaTeX or Microsoft Word templates. CBMS 2026 accepts three types of submissions: • Regular papers: The length of the contribution is limited to 6 pages, but it is possible to extend the paper length up to 8 pages by paying for each extra page. Check fees for more information. • Short papers: The length of the contribution is limited to 4 pages and no less than 3 pages, not being possible to extend the paper length. The duration of the oral presentation of short posters will be less than regular ones. • Posters: The length of the contribution is limited to 2 pages. Poster papers will be included in the proceedings but won’t include oral presentations during the conference. The authors of a poster also need to prepare a real poster to be shown during the conference. For presentation purposes at the conference, the authors must prepare the poster in portrait format. The accepted dimensions are 60 (width) x 80 (length). CALL FOR SPECIAL TRACKS IEEE CBMS 2026 invites proposals for organization of special tracks that will be held in parallel with the general conference track. The themes of the special tracks should not overlap with the general conference topics and should focus on emerging research fields. All tracks are expected to enable stimulating discussions of state-of-the-art, emerging, visionary, and perhaps controversial topics. Their papers should report on significant unpublished work and must meet the same standards as main conference papers. All accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings. We expect all accepted tracks to adhere to the conference paper submission and reviewing schedule, as outlined in the dates indicated below. Special Tracks chair(s) will be interacting with organisers of accepted workshops to ensure a high-quality workshop program. In the case of detecting several similar submissions, the CBMS 2026 organization can propose the fusion of those proposals. Special Track Requirements The organizers of a special track must comply with a set of principles and obligations, listed below: • A specific webpage with information about the special track will be created by CBMS after the acceptance notification. The organizers must provide the following information to be added to such webpage: special track description, list of topics, call for papers, submission information (must be the same as CBMS 2026 regular track), special track organizers, special track program committee members, any other relevant information. • The organizers of the special track are responsible for the peer-review process within their track. They must add their own Program Committee members/reviewers to the submission platform, ensure that receive all the reviews on time, check the quality of the reviews, and establish the acceptance/rejection decision. The final decision will be sent by CBMS 2026 PC Chairs. They also must pay special attention to potential conflicts of interest and ensure that all the general ethical rules of research are followed. • At least one of the organizers of the special track must register and attend CBMS 2026 in Limassol, Cyprus. The organizer(s) who attend CBMS will also chair the specific session that will be assigned in the agenda to their track. • The organizers of the special track are responsible for the publicity of their track to try to win as many submissions as possible. Please bear in mind that a special track with less than 4 accepted papers could be canceled. In this case, the accepted papers will be moved to the regular track. Submission Guidelines Each proposal must include: • Special track title • Rough estimate of the expected ST size as number of sessions (with 4-5 papers per session) • A brief biography of ST organizer(s) • List of Special Track Program Committee members • A draft of Special Track “Call for Papers” (important dates must be the same of the main conference) • One or two appropriate journals or follow up publications: tracks are expected to organize a special issue, if planned. The proposal must be submitted electronically using the EasyChair conference management system (see link below). CALL FOR SHOWCASE / RESEARCH PROJECTS CBMS 2026 will have a special showcase/research projects track session, where we invite (a) scientific papers, (b) demonstrations/posters and (c) research-projects descriptions. Scientific papers: We invite papers (not exceeding 6 pages in length), describing innovative computer-based medical devices or software applications, including practical experiences with such innovations. The papers should be scholarly articles presenting scientific methods, measurements, and experiments. Marketing and sales materials will not be accepted. These papers will be evaluated based on practicality, innovation, scientific rigor, value of the device or application to users, and novelty. They will be published in the proceedings of the conference along with the other papers under this track. Examples of such papers could include but are not limited to: • Computer-based medical devices that have technical/scientific novelty • Computer-based medical applications intended for or recently introduced in the field • Novel uses of traditional equipment in practice • Experience papers based on use and data from the field • Insightful measurement-based analysis of computer-based medical systems from the field • Novel analysis providing new insights from data collected from the field • New and practical data analytics useful in practice • Real deployments of AI solutions in medicine Demonstrations: A demonstration is more appropriate if the value can be better expressed with a demonstration rather than in a full-length paper. The topics for the demonstration papers are the same as the scientific for this track. Please submit a proposal of your demonstration with a limit of two pages. Research projects/initiatives: CBMS aims in this edition to receive submissions about research or innovation projects funded by, mainly, competitive calls to present their project. We foresee to receive submissions which include details about the project goals, consortium and results (expected and any tentative result obtained so far). Only projects funded by competitive calls or with strong potential interest for the community will be considered. International projects organized in a consortium of several countries will have preference. Submissions in this context should be a one/two-pages document with at least the following information: • Project/initiative title • Description • Participant entities • Project goals • Funding agency (when applies) or agencies • Results obtained so far (publications, patents, ...) The contribution must be prepared following the regular paper. The length of the contribution must be between 4 and 6 pages. All submissions will be peer-reviewed at least by two Program Committee members. All accepted contributions will be included in the conference proceedings and will be published by IEEE Xplore. Publication in proceedings is conditioned to the registration and presentation of the paper at the conference by one of the authors. CALL FOR DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM The Doctoral Consortium for CBMS 2026 will provide an opportunity for PhD students to present their research plans or their preliminary work in an informal and supportive atmosphere. The PhD students will be able to discuss the problems that their PhDs are addressing, any preliminary results, and their future plans. The DC will offer them an opportunity to discuss any problems that they have come up against, and gain valuable advice and constructive feedback from experienced researchers in the field.The Doctoral Consortium will involve presentations by participating PhD students (selected by the Doctoral Consortium chairs) as well as a number of invited talks / tutorials on different related topics in the field. Submissions Doctoral Consortium submissions should focus specifically on a PhD thesis or subsection of a thesis. To apply for participation at CBMS 2026 Doctoral Consortium, please submit a research plan on a topic related to the areas covered in the general call for papers for the conference. Each submission should be in the same format as the main conference papers except it should consist of approximately 3-5 pages describing your research work. In particular: • Title and author • The research problem that your PhD addresses • Your planned approach and methods for solving the problem • How your approach compares to other known approaches • Any preliminary results or expected results • Future plans and directions with specific questions Papers must be submitted electronically using the EasyChair conference management system (see link below). Doctoral Consortium papers/contributions will be included in the proceedings in a specific “Doctoral Consortium” section.
