Dear colleagues, [Apologies for cross-posting] The University of Virginia’s Digital Technology for Democracy (DTD) Lab invites applications for 2-year postdoctoral fellowships. The fellowships will begin in August of 2026 and run through August 2028. At the DTD Lab, which is part of the Karsh Institute of Democracy, our understandings of democracy and technology, and their intersections, are broad and interdisciplinary. We expect candidates to be creative in their approaches and, at the same time, to clearly articulate their personal understanding of technology and democracy in their project proposal. We are particularly interested in transdisciplinary research that addresses key topics at the intersection of digital technology and democracy, and we are eager to bring in a cohort that addresses these issues at global, regional, and local levels. We seek a broad range of viewpoints, perspectives, and experiences and welcome applications from all over the world. The Lab will work with the UVA International Studies Office to sponsor visas as needed. The annual salary for each position is $65,000, with additional research funding of $5,000 per year. Traditional work is giving way to informal and on-demand forms managed by digital technologies. Yet these models ignore the climate, placing workers in danger and enacting a heavy toll on the planet. *Call for Papers: Political economy of digital platforms: transformations in capitalism and responses from different countries * EPTIC Journal invites interested parties to submit papers for the Thematic Dossier “Political economy of digital platforms: transformations in capitalism and responses from different countries,” which will be coordinated by Helena Martins (UFC) and Rodrigo Moreno Marques (UFMG). The publication will inaugurate a series of three special dossiers related to the project "The economic governance of digital networks: for an analysis of markets, internet competition, and their impact on user rights," developed by the Observatory of Economics and Communication (Obscom) at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), with funding from Fapesp (21/06992-1). Texts must be submitted by November 15, 2025. The issue is expected to be published in March 2026. The Political Economy of Information, Communication, and Culture has linked the process of platformization and the emergence of digital platforms to the structural crisis in capitalism, which involves monopolization, concentration, and centralization of capital, stagnant growth in core countries, growing inequalities, financial instability, ecological crisis, and disputes over national sovereignty. As part of this context, technological transformations, from the microelectronic revolution to artificial intelligence, are not just autonomous phenomena, but constitute an attempt by capital to respond to this set of crises and maintain its accumulation process. As instruments of monopolistic economic agents, platforms do not act only as central intermediaries between producers, citizens treated as consumers, advertisers, and other groups. In fact, they act as vectors for the reorganization of capital, enabling data capture and control, monetization of attention, intermediation of exchanges, intensification of work, and value capture in sectors in which they operate, reproducing old relations of national dependence and creating new relations of dependence at the macroeconomic level. Specifically with regard to the cultural industry, they also reorganize the structure of social mediation, with significant power to control the production and circulation of content associated with new forms of manipulation. This general situation affects different countries in different ways, given the unequal international division of labor. We are interested in discussing how the capitalist structural crisis and the actions of platforms manifest themselves in Latin American countries, given the historical technological dependence, the appropriation of wealth, and the exploitation of labor and natural resources by large global corporations, which increases the risks to already fragile national sovereignties and regulatory regimes. This is evident in Donald Trump's threats against countries, including Brazil, that have debated or proposed new regulations on platforms, artificial intelligence, and other technologies. The reactions and national policies of countries such as China and Russia in the face of this complex reality are also emblematic. The impacts of this reconfiguration are diverse, ranging from forms of accumulation to the very organization of the political regime of democracy. Therefore, the dossier hopes to receive texts on: - The relevance and mobilization of classical concepts (value, commodity, labor, and others) for the observation of digital transformations; - Characterization of the current stage of capitalism and its relationship with information and communication technologies; - Geopolitics, wars, genocide, and the role of digital platforms; - Transformations in the world of work associated with platform mediation; - Data sovereignty, digital sovereignty, technological sovereignty, and popular sovereignty; - Regulation of platforms and digital services; - Digital monopolies and monopolization of digital markets. We are pleased to invite submissions for papers to the ACM Creativity and Cognition 2026 conference, which will be held at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London (UK) 13-16 July 2026. We encourage submissions that contribute with knowledge on various forms of creativity with topics ranging from designing or evaluating creativity-support environments and technologies to studying or reflecting on the experiences, practices, and cognitive processes in art, craft and design. We aim to weave the theme of making a better world through creativity throughout the conference program. Sophie Bishop’s book ‘Influencer Creep: How Optimization, Authenticity and Self-Branding Transform Creative Culture’ (University of California Press) draws from in-depth ethnography and interviews with influencers and professional artists. Bishop argues that looking to the shifts within influencer culture can help us understand contemporary changes to labour conditions, compensation and representation within art worlds. Requesting AI and Social Robotics Syllabi

Thanks! Communication and media research is expanding to include artificial intelligence and robotics, and this broadening of the study of communication also has extended to the classroom. Scholars who are integrating AI and/or Social Robotics into their courses are invited to participate in the Human-Machine Communication Syllabus Project by Andrea L. Guzman, Northern Illinois University, and Jason Archer, Michigan Technological University. The purpose of the project is two-fold: First, we aim to study how scholars are conceptualizing artificial intelligence, social robotics, and/or related technologies and incorporating them as subjects of study and tools for learning within higher education. Second, we want to offer scholars the opportunity to voluntarily share and access these syllabi to support education in this emerging area. For the study, we are seeking syllabi for courses that focus primarily on AI, social robotics, related technologies, and their applications as well as courses in which at least some of the content covered is dedicated to some aspect of these areas. To support teaching and learning, we are also creating a public repository of the syllabi submitted for this project. We are asking submitters whether they would like their syllabi to be included in a publicly accessible online location to assist others in the development of related courses. Inclusion of an individual’s syllabus in the public repository is completely voluntary and does not affect their ability to participate in the research project. The researchers will destroy all syllabi not included in the repository after the completion of the research project. The repository will be made publicly available at a future date when all syllabi have been received and reviewed. The deadline to submit your syllabi to the project is Oct. 20th, 2025. Blending ethnographic work with technical analysis, this is essential reading for anyone wanting a deeper understanding of the digital age. *DeepAesthetics: Computational Experience in a Time of Machine Learning* by Anna Munster (UNSW) Computation has now been reconfigured by machine learning: those technical processes and operations that yoke together statistics and computer science to create artificial intelligence (AI) by furnishing vast datasets to learn tasks and predict outcomes. In DeepAesthetics, Anna Munster examines the range of more-than-human experiences this transformation has engendered and considers how those experiences can be qualitative as well as quantitative. Drawing on process philosophy, Munster approaches computational experience through its relations and operations. She combines deep learning—the subfield of machine learning that uses neural network architectures—and aesthetics to offer a way to understand the insensible and frequently imperceptible forms of nonlinear and continuously modulating statistical function. Attending to the domains and operations of image production, statistical racialization, AI conversational agents, and critical AI art, Munster analyzes how machine learning is operationally entangled with racialized, neurotypical, and cognitivist modes of producing knowledge and experience. She approaches machine learning as events through which a different sensibility registers, one in which AI is populated by oddness, disjunctions, and surprises, and where artful engagement with machine learning fosters indeterminate futures. *About the authors* *Adrian Mackenzie* is Professor of Sociology at the Australian National University. He is a leading scholar of science and technology studies, media and cultural studies, and social and cultural theory. His current interests focus on network and computational media, digital sociology and innovation in data-related methods.
