Hello everyone, a group of us will be discussing a new book I've edited, Music Streaming Around the World, next Wednesday 8 October at 5.30pm US Eastern Time, as part of the Popular Music Books in Process series, which takes place online via Zoom. Kind regards, Dave Hesmondhalgh Music Streaming Around the World - David Hesmondhalgh, Raquel Campos Valverde, Shuwen Qu and Zhongwei (Mabu) Li This talk brings together members of the MUSICSTREAM music project based at the University of Leeds (UK) to discuss a new book, Music Streaming Around the World, about to be published by University of California Press. David Hesmondhalgh will give a brief overview of the collection, and of his chapter on how streaming fits into the long history of capitalism and colonialism in the realm of music. Shuwen Qu (Stella) will discuss her work on how short video platforms have transformed Chinese music production. Raquel Campos Valverde will discuss her chapter on the problematic implications of the taxonomies used by music streaming platforms. Finally, Zhongwei "Mabu" Li will summarise his history of how platformization has impacted independent Chinese musicians. (Qu and Li are discussing chapters co-authored with D. Qu Shuwen (Stella) is an Associate Professor at Jinan University and Co-Investigator on MUSICSTREAM. Her works focus on Chinese music industries and popular music culture, and she is currently working on a monograph on pan-entertainment music streaming in China. Zhongwei (Mabu) Li is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow on the MUSICSTREAM project, based at the University of Leeds. His work focuses mainly on the relationship between music streaming in China and the longer-term history of music, technology and culture in that country. Raquel Campos Valverde is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow on the MUSICSTREAM project. Her work focuses on software governance and cultural inequality in streaming platforms. AoIR is searching for a new Association Coordinator! The AC is our one paid staff member; they provide ongoing management and support to keep the Association running. Below is the job ad. Please feel free to circulate among friends, colleagues, and relevant job lists. ----- The Association of Internet Researchers is an academic association dedicated to the advancement of the cross-disciplinary field of internet studies. It is a member-based support network promoting critical and scholarly internet research independent from traditional disciplines and existing across academic borders. The association is international in scope and its primary event is the annual academic conference <https://aoir.org/past-conferences/>. AoIR seeks an energetic, responsible, and proactive Association Coordinator to support the mission of the Association. The AC provides support for all aspects of Association business, including: managing the website and the email list of 5,000 subscribers, monitoring and contributing to social media, managing the membership lists, supporting our online publication of conference proceedings, and assisting with all aspects of conference management. The AC works closely with the President and Vice-President in the day-to-day running of the Association. The applicant must possess excellent organization and communication skills, and an ability to work proactively, independently, and at times under pressure. Experience with academic associations is strongly preferred. The ideal applicant will possess event planning and logistics skills, experience negotiating contracts, and will interface regularly with the local conference committees. Required skills include: strong technical abilities and an ability to successfully administer and troubleshoot software systems, such as WordPress for managing our website, ConfTool for conference management, and Wild Apricot for membership management. We have an open-access publishing system that also requires troubleshooting, updating, and management. This is an Independent Contractor position of 10-15 hours a week on average, though the position has a strong seasonal element, with September and October being the busiest months. AoIR2025 Student Paper Award

AoIR is delighted to announce that the 2025 AoIR Student Paper Award has been awarded to Lucia Fernanda Mesa Velez for her paper “Rupturing ‘AI for Good’: A Feminist Decolonial Theoretical Framework for Analyzing AI Interventions in Gender-Based Violence. <https://www.conftool.org/aoir2025/index.php?page=browseSessions&form_sessio…>” You can hear Lucia’s paper at #AoIR2025 in Niterói on 16 October at 4:00 p.m. in the session Rethinking AI. Lucia’s paper has been recognised for the author’s innovative use of feminist and decolonial perspectives to build a critical framework for analyzing “AI for Good” interventions addressing gender-based violence (GBV). The significance of this critique stems from her accurate perception that current “AI for Good” initiatives require deeper examination, given their impact on vulnerable people, communities, and territories worldwide. We also recognize Tomás Guarna with an Honorable Mention for his paper, “Against the Tide: Startup Cultures in Mexico City and Buenos Aires <https://www.conftool.org/aoir2025/index.php?page=browseSessions&form_sessio…>” You can hear Tomás’s paper on 16 October at 11:00 a.m. in the session Mapping and Cartographing Cities and Cultures. Tomás’s paper focuses on a young generation of entrepreneurs in Latin America, specifically in Mexico and Argentina, navigating the startup ecosystem amidst a global market recession. His comprehensive ethnographic approach is based on five weeks of fieldwork in Mexico City and Buenos Aires, including observations at conferences and events, and meetings with startup entrepreneurs, venture capital partners and staff, startup accelerator leaders, and business school academics. Since 2021, we have published eight volumes, which delve into a range of topics and use wide-ranging methods, with several more books scheduled for publication in the coming years. We invite monographs as well as edited collections and are excited to receive inquiries about completed projects as well as ideas that are still in development. This book series aims to explore phenomena located at the intersection of technologies, including those which allow for family creation, migration, communication, reunion, and the family as a site of difference. The individual volumes in this series offer insightful analyses of the representations of these phenomena in media, social media, literature, popular culture, and corporeal settings. This Zoom session, sponsored by mediastudies.press, marks the publication of the translation with a discussion of the work’s significance by the panelists. Zarowsky’s book follows Armand Mattelart’s intellectual trajectory through Cold War geopolitics and the rise of critical communication studies in Latin America and Europe. First published in Spanish, Zarowsky’s study traces Mattelart’s path from his early work in demography and law, through his political engagement in Salvador Allende’s Chile, to his later role in shaping debates in France and globally on media, cultural politics, and transnational communication. The book offers a rich account of Mattelart’s life and work, and the shifting political, institutional, and epistemological contexts that shaped his thinking and progressive activism. Along the way, it illuminates his distinctive style of research in relation to Anglophone political economy and other strands of critical research. In doing so, Zarowsky positions Mattelart as a theorist whose work emerged from—and continues to speak to—global struggles over culture, knowledge, and power and relations between the Global North and South. As the first English edition of Zarowsky’s landmark study, the book will appeal to scholars of critical communication studies, Latin American and transnational cultural theory, and those working on the history of the social sciences across global contexts. Mariano Zarowsky is a researcher at Argentina’s National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and teaches at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA). His research intersects the history of intellectuals, communication studies, and political culture in Argentina and Latin America. Gutiérrez-Cortés – Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico Julio E. Rubio-Barrios – Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico Artiﬁcial intelligence has rapidly become a key mediator of global communication, reshaping how information is produced, circulated and translated across borders. This special issue seeks to critically examine the evolving role of AI inglobal information ﬂows, focusing on its potential to foster intercultural dialogue, its ethical and digital governance challenges, and its applications in journalism, education, diplomacy, and civic engagement in global societies. We envision this issue around three key axes: 1. AI as mediator of global communication – exploring cross-cultural, multilingual, and algorithmic mediation from a Media Ecology perspective, with attention to how AI reshapes environments of global communication, restructures symbolic exchanges, and redeﬁnes the balance between human and technological agents in global contexts. 2. AI ethics and governance in transnational information ﬂows – addressing bias, fairness, justice, and regulatory frameworks. 3. Applications of generative AI – analyzing innovations, practices, and risks in journalism, education, diplomacy, and civic participation. Methodological Approaches We welcome submissions employing a variety of methodological approaches, such as digital ethnography, critical discourse analysis, quantitative surveys and experiments, content and platform analysis, computational methods,case study, as well as mixed-methods designs.
