Find yourself already missing Australia? Didn't get to make it to Australia for AoIR? Then submit your papers to the the ICA Annual Conference that will take place May 2020 in Gold Coast, Australia. Below is the Call for Papers from the Human-Machine Communication Interest Group. Deadline is 16:00 UTC, 1 Nov. 2019. The HMC Interest Group welcomes submissions focused on the many aspects of the creation of meaning between humans and technologies designed to enact the role of communicator and the implications of people’s interactions with these technologies for individuals, organizations, and society. Relevant topics also include the study of the development and design of technologies as communicative subjects; the integration of these technologies into media-related industries (e.g., automated journalism); the augmentation of the body with technology (e.g., human augmentics); cultural discourse surrounding technologies that function as communicators; and the historical, philosophical, theoretical, and methodological development of HMC as a distinct subfield of communication. Papers regarding topics not specified here but directly related to the focus of the Interest Group are also welcome. Authors are encouraged, but not required, to engage with the conference theme of “Open Communication.” Submissions are welcome from the various theoretical and methodological approaches to communication research. Authors are encouraged to clearly state the aims/goals of the paper and how they will be achieved; to articulate how their work relates and contributes to HMC and communication research; and to clearly and completely explain theoretical and methodological aspects of their work. Authors should select specific keywords that describe the type of manuscript being submitted, the subject of the manuscript, and the approach and method used. To ensure papers are reviewed by a diverse pool of qualified reviewers, all authors submitting to the conference who have a PhD or have advanced to the rank of PhD candidate are highly encouraged to sign up to review. Submission Types: (Overview. Please consult website for more details). Papers: Maximum length is 8,000 words excluding tables and references. Paper awards: The Interest Group will present awards to the Top Student Paper and to the Top Paper. To be considered for the Top Student Paper Award 1) all authors must be students and 2) the paper must be designated as a student paper within the submission system. Students also are eligible to win the Top Paper Award. Interactive Posters: Authors who think their research is better presented in an interactive visual format are encouraged to note this when submitting their manuscript. Call for Visiting Scholars at UNNC

Dear colleagues, The School of International Communications at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) invites applications for our inaugural Visiting Scholars programme. This position includes visa, transportation, accommodation, and a research stipend, and will be held for 2-3 months during the Spring/Summer term (between February 17th and July 15th, 2020, at the applicant’s discretion). The aim of this award is to foster research collaboration with members of staff in the School. During the residency, the scholar will undertake their research and collaborate with one or more members of IC staff on a research project (proposed by the Visiting Scholar) that will result in a publication or a grant application. They will also deliver one lecture for our School’s UG and PG students and will give one presentation to the wider University on their research as part of our Invited Speakers programme. There are no further teaching or administrative responsibilities. The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) was the first Sino-foreign University to open its doors in China. This award-winning campus offering a UK style education has grown to establish a student body of 8,000 in just 15 years. We're hiring two tenure-track positions in the broadly-defined areas of data science & cybersecurity. AoIR 2019 reflections

Hi all, Following last week's tremendous AoIR 2019, I've cobbled together some reflections, which you'll find below. These may be of interest for those who couldn't make it, or perhaps even for those who could. (These reflections were included in the fortnightly newsletter sent out today by the Centre for Media Transition, where I work. Cheers Sacha Sacha Molitorisz, PhD Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Centre for Media Transition Faculty of Law University of Technology Sydney Last week I flew to Brisbane for my very first Association of Internet Researchers Conference<https://aoir.org/aoir2019/>, where I learnt three things. One, people in Brisbane don't jaywalk. Two, internet researchers look cool, complete with piercings, tattoos and blue hair. And three, internet researchers are not very positive about the internet. In her keynote address, Macquarie University's Professor Bronwyn Carlson<https://www.mq.edu.au/about_us/faculties_and_departments/faculty_of_arts/de…> detailed the torrent of abuse and vilification that Indigenous Australians cop on social media. Of course, she said, there are benefits too, including for Indigenous sufferers of depression and anxiety, who can connect with others. But on balance, she said, social media is hugely destructive. If she could, she said, she'd pull the plug. On Thursday, Dr Sal Humphreys<https://researchers.adelaide.edu.au/profile/sal.humphreys> from the University of Adelaide was glum too. Her research explored whether it's possible for companies to engage in ethical data practice while remaining commercially viable. This wasn't speculative. She was researching on behalf of a company building smartphone games offering in-app purchases, including to children. And her short answer? No. Why act ethically if competitors gain an advantage by acting unethically? Surveillance capitalism wins. "I just don't have any optimism in me about this," Humphreys said. This year's AoIR conference was the 20th. Over those two decades, the internet has changed radically, and changed radically again. I can only guess the mood at AoIR has changed radically too. The people who have spent their lives studying the internet now have big concerns. As several participants noted, it's a question of power. Does the internet serve us, or do we serve it? And if it does serve us, which version of us does it serve? The best version of ourselves, or something more base? On Saturday, Megan Lindsay Brown revealed research showing the connection between tech-based abuse (such as cyberstalking) and real world violence. Partners in an abusive relationship tend to find it hard to leave; tech can make that separation even more difficult. And scholars including Matt Beard, Terry Flew, Tarleton Gillespie and Stuart Cunningham addressed various emerging challenges in regulating digital speech and digital platforms. How do we classify platforms? What laws do we need? But there were lighter moments too. Nancy Baym from Microsoft Research and Limor Shifman from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem revealed their findings about Clippy memes, such as this one. It was a fun session, although, as they said, a joke is never just a joke. Clippy memes often reveal serious concerns about the creepiness of digital assistants. And Stefano Brilli delivered a paper about pornographic exchanges on Italian private group chats. On some of these sites, he said, you can be banned for blasphemy. Hardcore is fine; disrespecting the deity is not. Out of it all, though, there was one bright ray of optimism. And that's the collaborative spirit of the researchers, who revealed a consistent commitment to sharing ideas, furthering knowledge and improving the net, and through it the world. In my case, this was particularly true of Charles Ess<https://uio.academia.edu/CharlesEss>. He's a giant of digital media ethics, so you might expect someone preoccupied, if not aloof. Instead, he turned out to be unfailingly helpful and personable. In its early years, the internet was touted as the ultimate expression of people power. Sadly, it isn't always turning out that way. But at least the researchers who study it still embody that democratising spirit. And in that vein, a huge shout out to the wonderful efforts of Jonathan Hutchinson, Axel Bruns, Jean Burgess, Terry Flew and everyone else at QUT and AoIR who hosted and organised. As Tama Leaver noted in a tweet, "Airport bound, thanks to everyone at #AoIR2019<https://twitter.com/hashtag/AoIR2019?src=hashtag_click> for confirming that it's never just a conference, it's a community". Indeed, and community is just what the net needs now. In my case, this was particularly true of Charles Ess<https://uio.academia.edu/CharlesEss>. He's a giant of digital media ethics, so you might expect someone preoccupied, if not aloof. Instead, he turned out to be unfailingly helpful and personable. In its early years, the internet was touted as the ultimate expression of people power. Sadly, it isn't always turning out that way. But at least the researchers who study it still embody that democratising spirit. And in that vein, a huge shout out to the wonderful efforts of Jonathan Hutchinson, Axel Bruns, Jean Burgess, Terry Flew and everyone else at QUT and AoIR who hosted and organised. As Tama Leaver noted in a tweet, "Airport bound, thanks to everyone at #AoIR2019<https://twitter.com/hashtag/AoIR2019?src=hashtag_click> for confirming that it's never just a conference, it's a community". Over the last few decades the introduction of digital technologies to elections has opened up a raft of new attack vectors. Recently, US has placed voting technologies on the list of national, critical infrastructures. Secure voting protocols, in particular so-called end-to-end verifiable schemes, have been a hot topic of research for the last decade or so. Voting poses many challenges: the precise characterization of subtle properties including verifiability and coercion resistance, accountability etc. and the design and analysis of schemes providing these properties in a complex, hostile environment. The field requires a deep understanding of modern crypto and information security but is also highly interdisciplinary, requiring understanding of the role of humans, physical components, procedures, legal and regulatory aspects etc. ----------------------------------------------------- Submissions Papers should contain original research in any area related to electronic voting technologies, verifiable elections, and related concerns. Example topics include but are not limited to: In-person voting systems Remote/Internet voting systems Voter registration and authentication systems Procedures for ballot and election auditing Cryptographic (or non-cryptographic) verifiable election schemes Attacks on existing systems Trust models Designs of new systems Experiences deploying voting systems or conducting elections Experiences detecting and recovering from election problems Formal or informal security or requirements analysis Examination of usability and accessibility issues Research on relevant regulations, standards and laws Papers describing experiences deploying voting systems, conducting elections, or detecting and recovering from election problems are welcome, so long as they include enough rigorous analysis to constitute original research. Submissions will be judged on originality, relevance, correctness, and clarity. The workshop solicits submissions of manuscripts that represent significant and novel research contributions. Submissions must not substantially overlap with works that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings. Submissions should follow the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science format and should be no more than 15 pages including references and well-marked appendices. Accepted papers will appear in the proceedings published by Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science.
