Call for Papers for Stream 8: "Rural Frontiers In-between Tradition and Change: gender, work and organization in rural contexts" While much of the research on gender, work, organization and entrepreneurship is conducted in urban settings, we are interested in contributions that analyse the impact of a rural context on gendered working conditions and relationships. More discussion is needed on how rural and sparsely populated regions experience the current societal changes and their impact on working lives. Intersections of gender with age, race, ethnicity, class, caste and sexuality in relation to daily life around work need to be discussed with rurality in focus. CONTESTED DATA: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE GIVENS AREN’T TAKEN Call for Applications Event organized by Dan Bouk and danah boyd DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 25, 2019 APPLY: http://datasociety.net/contested-data-application For questions, email events(a)datasociety.net On March 6, 2020, Data & Society will host a workshop in New York City on how data and data infrastructures lose their legitimacy. Participation in this event is limited; those who are interested in participating should apply by November 25. Data & Society workshops enable deep dives with a broad community of interdisciplinary researchers into topics at the core of Data & Society’s concerns. They’re designed to maximize scholarly thinking about the evolving and socially important issues surrounding data-driven technologies. Workshop participants will be asked to read 2-3 full papers in advance of the event and prepare comments for intensive discussion. Some participants will be asked to be discussants of papers, where they will lead the conversation and engage the room. Authors will not present their work, but rather participate in critical discussion with the assembled group about the paper, with the explicit intent of making the work stronger and more interdisciplinary. Contested Data: What Happens When the Givens Aren’t Taken The word “data” derives from the Latin for the givens. And though we often think about data as something to be gathered, hoarded, culled, or stripped, the reason we want it is so that it can be our givens. Data provide the basis for our analyses, valuations, decisions, or arguments. Today, data seem ever more important. Many private and public actors push for data-driven medicine or data-driven policymaking, with a trajectory toward data-driven everything. Data must train the machine learning systems and AIs that hire and fire, parole and police, price and predict. What if people won’t accept the givens? How and why do people refuse to accept data, and the infrastructures that provide data, as valid for future action? What are the larger social, political, or economic consequences of such a refusal? Much important work has already been done to investigate the knowledge practices that legitimate data, a field that has grown out of earlier studies by historians, sociologists, anthropologists, statisticians, and philosophers into practices of quantification. We are learning more and more about why people trust in numbers and in data, to extend Ted Porter’s phrase. This workshop seeks papers that come at the question of legitimation from the other direction: why don’t people trust in data, especially data that once was deemed trustworthy? Inspired by work on “agnotology” and on knowledge practices that produce doubt, we seek participants prepared to think beyond data mining to the process by which data is undermined. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers who are examining these issues from different disciplinary and analytic perspectives. Relevant topics for this workshop might include: When in the past have state-produced data sets (census, official surveys, etc.) or index numbers (cost-of-living, GDP, unemployment, etc.) fallen out of use or been challenged to the point that they could no longer serve their purpose? How do alternatives to official sources of data arise? What practices have state, corporate, or civil society actors employed to generate doubt in a data’s accuracy or utility? What roles have scientists or other technically sophisticated actors played in debates and controversies surrounding the legitimacy of data? How has the larger public engaged in debates about data and data infrastructures? Participation requirements All participants are required to read three papers in advance of the event and come ready to offer constructively critical feedback. We want researchers from different intellectual traditions to spar with and challenge one another to strengthen ourselves across the board. This is not an event for passive attendance, but an opportunity to engage each other substantively and from cross-disciplinary perspectives. A subset of participants will workshop papers they have written. This is a fantastic venue for workshopping a paper. If you have an appropriate paper in-progress, you are strongly encouraged to submit it for consideration. Drafts of journal articles, conference papers, law review papers, and book chapters are all welcome. Papers are expected to be at draft stage with room for improvement; the goal of this event is not to present largely finished work but to truly workshop works-in-progress. For this event, we are looking to bring together researchers from diverse disciplines ranging from sociology to law, science studies to history, and anthropology to media studies. As a result, attendees should expect to engage with scholars who are outside of their field. We ask that attendees think of this as an opportunity to engage across fields, and to strengthen both relationships and research through participation in the workshop. While we see this as valuable for individual authors, we also see this as a field-building exercise that we hope will be valuable for all involved. Format The workshop will include a mix of deep-dive discussions on data contestation, as well as 2-3 slots focused on workshopping papers. Each paper session will be 75 minutes long. One paper will be workshopped in each session. Multiple sessions will run in parallel so there will be a total of 6-9 papers, but each participant will only be responsible for, at most, 3. Within each group, a discussant will open with a critique of the paper before inviting participants to share their feedback. (If you participate in this event and are not an author, you may be asked to be a discussant.) All are expected to share feedback, with author response towards the end of the session. Logistics The event will take place at Data & Society in New York City on March 6, 2020 and will run from 8:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is limited travel support for our out-of-town guests. If you are in need of travel support, please let us know. We will not be able to accommodate all travel needs so if you have grants or other means of covering your participation, please use that so that we can prioritize funding for those who have none. Application to participate If you are interested in attending this workshop, you may either 1) propose a paper to be workshopped; or 2) describe how your research makes you a relevant discussant/participant. Please note: All co-authors who are intending to attend must apply separately. They should submit the same paper abstract. If your paper is accepted, you will be allowed to send 2 authors. Additional authors will be considered as discussants/participants. IIPC WAC 2020 - Expanding Horizons: how we build, use, and sustain web archives http://netpreserve.org/ga2020/ In 2020 the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) Web Archiving Conference (WAC) will be proudly hosted in Montréal, by Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ), from May 12-13, 2020. The events are organised in partnership with Library and Archives Canada and University of Toronto Libraries. The conference will be followed by a two-day Archives Unleashed datathon that will bring together a small group of participants to gain a hands-on experience of working with web archives. Governance involves values, norms, and ethics that guide management of and access to big data stockpiles, as well as institutional structures and policies for realizing goals. Governance goals include making data available for innovation and advancements in science, policy and business as well as limiting data accumulation and access when potential harms outweigh potential good. Disrupting technology: contextualising continuity and change in technology, work and employment 16-17th January 2020, Centre for Employment Relations Innovation and Change, University of Leeds (Newlyn Building) Recent scholarship on the relationship between technology and work has often tended to accentuate new technologies’ supposed transformative effects. Conferences on work and employment often feature streams dedicated solely to new technologies – such as platforms or AI – segregated from other streams where technology is mentioned very little. This both narrows our understandings of what constitutes ‘technology’ and contributes to the renewed growth of technological determinism, both in its utopian or dystopian variants- from Fully Automated Luxury Communism” on one hand to a nightmare of total surveillance on the other. Such debates are often speculative and can serve to obscure how actually existing employment relations are being shaped by new technologies. The Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change (CERIC) at Leeds University Business School is pleased to announce a call for papers for a two day event in January 2020 relating to these questions. This workshop calls for more careful, empirically grounded, theorisations of technology, its novelty and its impact on work and employment relations. We ask that contributions recognise the influence of conflicted interests and actions by managers, workers, the state and other social actors on the patterns, processes and outcomes of technological innovation. By devoting more attention to contextualising and historicising the relationship between technology and work, we ask contributors to develop more critical accounts of the extent of transformation and disruption, vis-à-vis entrenchment or continuity of existing social relations and employment relationships. Beyond the technology itself, what is genuinely novel and transformative about automation, AI or ‘platformisation’, which more mundane technologies might we be missing from the analysis? Dates: Thursday 4 and Friday 5 June 2020 https://sites.google.com/view/ics2020conference/home The development of young people’s identities and sense of selfhood is widely recognized as being a social activity undertaken through interaction and feedback with significant others. Advancing beyond earlier top-down models of socialization, whereby parents and teachers were largely seen as responsible for transmitting stable cultural norms, knowledge, political attitudes, religious beliefs and social practices to young people, contemporary understanding has instead foregrounded the active, dynamic, co-construction of young selves. Such approaches have not only drawn attention to the active engagement of young people in shaping their own identities but has also emphasized the wider social, political, economic, cultural contexts that frame the possibilities for the interactive realization of personhood. Most profoundly, and the focus of this international symposium, for the current generation of young people, the active construction of self is significantly mediated by and through a digital media ecology of communications networks, algorithms and platforms. These emergent networked environments have led to celebrations about the potential to enhance the development of young selves through wider access to knowledge, cultures, beliefs, identities and the opportunities to perform such self-formation through online interaction with diverse others. But it has also produced moral panics for those concerned about the perceived negative effects of digital media, such as attention deficit, the break-down of authority, dumbing down of education, infantilizing politics, and the weakening of traditional family ties. Premised upon a notion of youth as a social construction, as well as upon its permeability, and taking into account how young people - whether as young children, tweens, teenagers, or late twentysomething, whether in the West or outside of it- are growing up with significant access to globalized media and transmedia platforms and narratives, this two-day international symposium will critically investigate the issues presented by the construction of young selves within the contemporary digital media ecology. With the aim to grasp the complexity and diversity of most young people’s experiences and practices with online technologies, we invite original research findings and theoretical analysis addressing (though not exclusively) such questions as: • What role for young people do traditional markers of identity such as social class, religion, family, or geography play in online group interaction? • As increasingly more young people find themselves geographically dispersed and living transitional lives in immigrant communities or in refugee camps, what kind of possibilities for connectedness, dialogue and identity-making online technologies have to offer? • What value are social media platforms for gay, transgender, queer, atheist, or differently abled young people as spaces for socialization? • How much are young people’s political norms and engagement practices facilitated by digital communication? • How does everyday online engagement affect interaction between young people and significant others such parents, teachers and other traditional ‘authority’ figures? • Does social networking influence learning practices, competencies or curriculum design? • What are young people’s attitudes and actual use of digital media in everyday life? • How should we assess the significance of celebrity culture for young people’s development of self? • Are young people more likely to develop a transnational outlook as a consequence of the digital media ecology? Hi All, I hope you had a wonderful time in Australia. Sorry to have missed it. I am beginning a round of about 90 interviews, most of which I will do using video-conferencing software Zoom (low background noise and decent audio quality). Last time I did this five years ago, I paid Rev to do the bulk of the transcription. Now, I am wondering if voice-to-text transcription software has become good enough to produce transcriptions of one-on-one interviews. I've been surfing and seeing services like Temi or wreally, and I am wondering if any of you have had success (or failures) with this kind of software. I am not doing any sort of hyper-close linguistic analysis, so I don't need the transcripts to be absolutely perfect. Software would save a lot of money, but I also don't want to waste time if the results are going to be too shoddy to use. Thoughts? Preferred software? Thank you in advance.
