PORN STUDIES CALL FOR FORUM PIECES Our Forum section is a space for pieces that are shorter than the usual academic article, usually somewhere between 1,500 and 3,000 words, and they can take a variety of forms, including short articles, reports, interviews, commentaries and roundtable discussions. The poster dimensions will be of A0 type, that is 84 cm by 119 cm (33" by 47"), with poster content mounted on rectangular poster board we will provide. Demos Presentation Authors of accepted demos will have a chance to present their material to conference attendees during the posters and demos session. Authors of demonstrations are expected to be available to present, describe and discuss the work behind the tool/prototype during the session. H2020 - mapping the recent transformations in the European media system

Hello everyone, In little more than one month, the EU H2020 program will launch a large call for projects dedicated to the mapping of the "recent transformations in the European media system" (https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/oppor…) At the Public Data Lab and at the Digital Methods Initiative, we believe that no such mapping can be complete without a thorough investigation of the digital media landscape. Importantly, this investigation should include not only the main social platforms, but also the smaller and more hidden venues of online debate. If the whole "junk news" debate has taught us something, it is that the core and the peripheries of the media spheres are more closely connected that they used to be and that fringe groups and messages can suddenly be projected to the centre stage. Internet research therefore is not anymore a useful-yet-marginal addition to the survey of the media systems, but increasingly a central piece of its mapping. If you are interested in joining forces to answer this major EU call to map the EU media landscape, do not hesitate to get in touch with us off-list. Dear AoIR 2019 Attendees, We are almost ready for this week’s Trust in the System #AoIR2019 conference in Brisbane! While many of you have already arrived on our shores, many are still in transit, some are attending the first of the satellite events, and some of us are making the final local preparations. Regardless of your current status, we are very excited to welcome you all to Brisbane for what promises to be an amazing week of conversations and exchange. There are a few things we would like to bring to your attention as you prepare for AoIR this week. 1. If you are arriving at the QUT campus and need to take a taxi/Uber to QUT Gardens Point, probably best to go to the drop-off point in front of Queensland Parliament. Then walk down the pedestrian road into campus. 2. The local committee has developed a Code of Conduct for this year’s conference. Announcing the new Connected Learning Research tools site, featuring tools and instruments from 10 connected learning studies and projects. Website: https://connectedlearning.news/ResearchToolsAOIR This site should be of interest to: - University researchers (graduate students, postdocs, and faculty) doing research in similar areas that are curious about how our research was done, - Evaluators of informal youth programs that do assessment and evaluation, and - Practitioners (librarians, teachers, educators) in informal youth programs that need to do research or evaluation to accomplish a goal. Included on the site are studies of specific programs, studies of youth new media practices, and general instruments and techniques for documenting and evaluating connected learning. Every study page includes a project description, team members, any reports or case studies published, and tools used. Each tool page includes a description of the tool, as well as a downloadable version of the tool. The case studies are included so scholars and practitioners can see the range of material that is possible to create using the instruments. Apologies for cross-posting LSE Media and Communications Report launch and discussion: WhatsApp Vigilantes: An exploration of citizen reception and circulation of WhatsApp misinformation linked to mob violence in India by Shakuntala Banaji and Ram Bhat with Anushi Agarwal, Nihal Passanha and Mukti Sadhana Pravin 17th October 2019, 18.00 – 19.30 Thai Theatre, New Academic Building (NAB), LSE followed by a reception This discussion, chaired by Dr. Omar Al-Ghazzi, invites responses to new research conducted on WhatsApp forwarding of misinformation and mob violence in India. The abuse of applications such as WhatsApp to spread fake news, misinformation and disinformation has had dangerous consequences for hundreds of vulnerable groups, and nowhere more so than in India. Hundreds of people in the last five years have been publicly lynched to death, leading to the phrase ‘WhatsApp Lynchings’. Since October 2018, Dr. Shakuntala Banaji and Ram Bhat have been working with field researchers in India conducting qualitative research in four large states, interacting with more than 275 people in focus group discussions, in-depth interviews and reviewing more than 1000 messages on WhatsApp to produce typologies both of Indian disinformation/misinformation and of the users most likely and least likely to forward these messages. The discussion will include a presentation of the findings, comments from our expert audience and responses. “Algorithms for her? feminist approaches to digital infrastructures, cultures and economies” January 17th 2020 - King’s College London 10am-5pm followed by a wine reception Our daily lives are increasingly governed by algorithmic processes of selection, identification and discrimination.This international symposium focuses on the intersectional forms of injustice that algorithms – and the systems in which they are embedded – help to propagate and sustain. Given the significance and ubiquity of such processes in everyday life, and their disproportionate effects on those marginalised across intersections of gender, sexuality, class and race, this event will create a dedicated space for the discussion of algorithmic forms of oppression and inequality. Algorithms for Her? seeks to support the synthesis of in-depth analysis of algorithms – together with their functions and entanglements – with critical feminist works that meaningfully examine the production and ethics of bias. "Newness" is often fetishised in analyses of digital culture. The approaches sidelined by this fetishisation are often those by women and scholars of colour, who struggle to have their contributions included in dominant canons of thought. In some areas of scholarship we may be reaching ‘peak algorithm’ but relatively few studies can meaningfully be called inclusive, reflective or feminist. This symposium seeks to give platform to perspectives on algorithms and algorithmic culture that are under-represented in the academy. We welcome both traditional conference presentations (15 minutes in length) and creative alternatives such as performances or artistic interventions. We invite contributions related to any of the following areas: - Intersectional feminist work critically examining platforms and their economies/ approaches to machine learning,content moderation and algorithms (broadly defined). - Intersectional feminist work examining software/tools/app design and infrastructure. - Intersectional feminist work on platform labour and inequalities. - Feminist methodologies for studying and teaching algorithms and the ethical questions they raise. - Industry/nonprofit cases of addressing discrimination/bias sustained by and 'within' technologies.
