The University of Amsterdam is looking for an all-round system administrator and tool developer in the area of digital methods research at the New Media and Digital Culture program. The position is for 30.4 hours per week (0.8 FTE) for the duration of one year. After positive assessment, the appointment will be converted into a permanent contract. Your tasks: Development and maintenance of tools for courses in the New Media program. For the MA and BA digital research methods courses, these tools include the Internet Censorship Explorer, Google Scrapers (Web, news, blogs), the Wayback Machine scraper, as well as programs that help map hyperlink networks within Wikipedia and parsing and analyzing Wikipedia edit histories. For an overview of tools see tools.digitalmethods.net. The developer is also expected to write manuals for the use of tools, for example for collecting and analyzing archived pages of a website. The instruments, methods and techniques are developed in close collaboration with Prof. Dr. Richard Rogers and the researchers of the Digital Methods Initiative. With these instruments, methods and techniques, the Digital Methods Initiative is globally leading and innovative in its education and research methods. The conference has a longstanding interest in empirical, conceptual, theoretical and technical contributions, and has a tradition of innovation and inclusiveness. ECSCW 2020 will take place in Siegen, Germany, from June 13-17, 2020 (see https://ecscw.eusset.eu/2020/) The themes of the conference include, but are not limited to: * Empirical investigations of collaborative practices. This call targets the Journal Papers documenting original, rich, and in-depth contributions to CSCW. Submitted papers will follow a standard journal review process and accepted submissions will be published in Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW): The Journal of Collaborative Computing and Work Practices, the most prestigious Journal of CSCW research. Upon acceptance of the paper to the Journal, authors are expected to present their work at the conference. Important information about the review process: For the first time, submissions to the journal-track of the ECSCW conference will undergo a fully-integrated review process which will be continuous. Reviews and resubmissions will therefore not be restricted to two rounds, as it was the case in the past. Rather, the new submission and review process will allow authors to develop and refine stronger papers over a longer time period (as soon as the authors submit early enough). The review process is single-blind, as has been since ECSCW implemented a journal-track. Authors are encouraged to submit as soon as they have their manuscripts ready. If the paper does not reach the Accepted but incomplete status by March 15, 2020, it will automatically be transferred to the batch of submissions for the subsequent ECSCW conference, unless the submission is withdrawn. With this approach, the authors will not have to restart the submission process and all work completed to this point will be considered for the next chapter of the conference. This also means that authors may get their papers accepted shortly after the ECSCW 2020 conference. Dear Scholars, The translation of a Medieval manuscript page has revealed the record of a rare Mediterranean plant, from c. 1444. The plant is Atropa baetica, which is now endangered and included on the IUCN Red List. Birds of a Feather: How can internet researchers and Mozilla collaborate?

Hi everyone, I would like to propose a 'Birds of a Feather' meeting for anyone interested in discussing how internet researchers and civil society (and Mozilla in particular) can collaborate. I'm currently working in between both of these worlds: I work at the Mozilla Foundation as a research and data analyst for the Internet Health Report (https://internethealthreport.org/) and as an associate researcher at the Weizenbaum Institute. There have been some developments at Mozilla that show a great potential for a more intense collaboration that would benefit both: - Mozilla collaborates with researchers to demand better access to Facebook and YouTube data to improve public oversight. For example, in collaboration with researchers, it developed guidelines for a better Ad Archive API around the EU elections (https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2019/03/27/facebook-and-google-this-is-what-a…) With the prominence of digital methods at AOIR this year, I’m sure there is a potential for similar campaigns in the future. - The Mozilla Foundation is now concentrating their advocacy efforts on 'Trustworthy AI', a theme that overlaps with much of the research presented at AOIR (https://marksurman.commons.ca/2019/08/28/update-digging-deeper-on-trustwort…) - In addition, the Internet Health Report (where I’m involved) frequently relies on the work of internet researchers, but it targets a non-academic audience. I hope to learn more about how the relationship between Mozilla and academia can be further developed for mutual benefit. Are you interested in discussing how academia and civil society can better collaborate, and perhaps already have some ideas you would like to share? Are you perhaps in a similar position as me and would like to share some experience? Or are you just curious if your research would be interesting for an organization like Mozilla? Whatever your interest is, everyone is welcome to join! Just send a message directly to me and let me know if Thursday or Friday evening is better for you. The third annual ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability and Transparency (ACM FAT*) 2020, in Barcelona 27-29 January, invites PhD students in all disciplines including computer science, statistics, law, social sciences, the humanities, and education, to apply for the FAT* Doctoral Consortium (DC). The FAT* DC offers PhD students doing research on fairness, accountability and transparency in relation to socio-technical systems with a unique opportunity to engage in substantive interaction with experienced researchers regarding their proposed dissertation research and career objectives. It aims - to provide a setting for feedback on the research of participating PhD students; - to provide PhD students with an opportunity to establish a supportive community, including other PhD students working in related areas or at a similar stage of their dissertation research; - to stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration on shared research interests; and - to support a new generation of researchers by offering advice about publishing and career paths. The Doctoral Consortium will be held on Monday 27 January 2020, 9am-12 noon. The DC will include presentations by all participating PhD students, with plenary discussions, individual meetings with experienced researchers, discussions over breaks, peer-feedback, and panel discussions. We will also arrange lunch meetings for the participants on the other conference days. PhD students will be selected who have already settled on their thesis direction and who have made some progress in this direction, but still have significant research to complete. Applications will be reviewed according to the following criteria: clarity and completeness of application package, stage of research, evidence of research progress (please give references or links to published papers and/or technical reports) and assessment of contribution to and likely benefit from participating in the DC. Applications require a one-page thesis summary, a two-page CV, a one-page personal statement, and a statement from your PhD supervisor, all in a single PDF. Hello all! We are pleased to announce the LSE Digital Ethnography Collective, a new interdisciplinary group exploring the intersections of digital culture and ethnographic methods. We invite scholars at all levels from across universities to join us in fortnightly meetings where we will host speakers and workshop new ideas. We welcome those interested in online culture (Internet/platforms/social media), and the ethnographic study of digital technologies. The aim of the group is to establish a community of scholars of digital ethnography and to work through challenges in this emerging subdiscipline.
