Dear Fen, Valeria, David, and Samantha, Thank you very much for your suggestions, I will check them out right away What I try to show my students is the possibilities and some actual cases of collective intelligence (for this I also use Jenkin's Convergence Culture, paired with Tapscott's Wikinomics and the open source movement) and contrasting this with cases in which the collective action does not result in something intelligent -as David said-, for this I touch on experiments in which the crowd of the wisdom fails such as Lorenz et al. How social influence can undermine the wisdom of crowd effect, along with Terranova's Free Labor, and Lunenfeld's The secret war between uploading and downloading. Then, for alternative ideas about collective intelligence, we read the classic science fiction story First Men from Howard Fast. I am sure your suggestions will enrich my course and my understanding of the subject, thanks!!!! According to the vision underlying the IoT, the next step in increasing the ubiquity of the Internet, after connecting people anytime and everywhere, is to connect inanimate objects. By providing objects with embedded communication capabilities and a common addressing scheme, a highly distributed, ubiquitous and dense network of seamlessly connected heterogeneous devices is formed, which can be fully integrated into the current Internet and mobile networks, thus allowing for the development of new intelligent applications and services available anytime, anywhere, by anyone and anything. Many applications with high social and business impact fall under the IoT umbrella. Many application areas are emerging such as public safety, smart city environments, personal healthcare, smart grid, surveillance, building automation, intelligent transportation, smart vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles systems, smart agriculture and aquaculture, as well as tactile Internet applications. Nevertheless, it is expected that new areas will emerge once the enabling technologies reach a stable state. In this context, the upcoming 5G wireless network technology promises to be responsive, fast and power efficient. The combination of speed, responsiveness and reach of 5G will provide both opportunities and challenges for new IoT applications and services, relying on software defined networks within virtualized environments with the aim to provide optimal performance targets regarding latency, bandwidth, resilience and energy consumption. The goal of this special issue is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions that describe original and unpublished work addressing IoT applications and services within the 5G context. Our bodies, tools, and institutions are now understood as resilient and perpetually updatable. New diets and fitness apps promise to optimize our caloric intake just as an optimal information diet promises to make many informed citizens. So informed that what to watch next or who to vote for becomes one of many effortless choices made possible by the recommendations of algorithms, smartphones, and other optimizing systems. But what does optimization mean anyway? Or more crucially, what does it do? Who or what is optimized? What relationships or platforms are generated? And who or what or where falls away—is dis-optimized? Optimization intervenes in the growing formulation of algorithmic governance, regulation or algocracy, drawing on theories of communication and control. Optimization refers to specific technical architectures (e.g., centralized, decentralized or distributed) as well as applications of mathematical theory to social life—including Pareto optimalities, linear programming and stochastic theory. Taken together, optimization provides a way to understand the iterative projects of algorithmic governance as iterations of operations research, systems-cybernetic theory, or computational management. But optimization is also deeply cultural and situated—even if its claims are often general or biopolitical. As such, its technical logics and architectures should be considered alongside real social practices, geopolitical networks, and the forms of organization (and violence) shored up by the desire for optimum performance. This themed issue calls for the interdisciplinary scrutiny of optimization as a critical concept and a form of management crucial to the rhythm of networks. We invite historical and theoretical interventions around optimization and seek a wide range of approaches and analyses of the sociotechnical assemblages made possible by autonomous software and ubiquitous hardware. The goal is to provide a clear, multi-faceted introduction; help situate contemporary concerns around platforms and social engineering within the development of management, cybernetics, social and political theory; and turn attention to global specificities beyond North Atlantic examples, as well as the many forms of difference elided by optimization itself. How do these systems intervene in economic, social, and political life? And how do they transform or diminish the political imagination—now tied to industrial research and development and the calculations of a control society? Some topics this issue hopes to consider include, but are not limited to: - Considerations of how optimization systems intervene in economic, social, and political life.
