The position is focused on the politics and policy aspects of social media platforms and AI, with emphasis on how these platforms discriminate, privilege and/or enable alternative points of view. Documentation of AOL in mid-1990s

All, I've had limited locating these on my own, so I wonder if anyone has any suggestions: Are there archives (official or community-based) of documents related to America Online, especially during its mid-1990s boom? I'm especially interested in two things: A) Guides/Community Leaders' day-to-day practices around policing offensive content and B) AOL's relationship to independent community-oriented content providers (including compensation rates, contracts, etc.). Some documentation of Guide practices and policies exists, but there's almost nothing about the latter - it's my suspicion most users didn't even know some forums were run by independent contractors. [Apologies for cross-posting] *CALL FOR PAPERS - Generations, Digital Uses and CompetencesA special issue of Medijske studije / Media Studies Journal to be published in January 2020, MS Vol. 10 (2019) 20* Edited by Maria José Brites (Lusófona University of Porto), Inês Amaral (University of Coimbra), Antonija Čuvalo (University of Zagreb) Media generational identities are culturally, socially, economically and historically shaped. A single vision of generational identity is impossible. This special issue welcomes different approaches to intergenerational and generational perspectives from various geographical landscapes. Moreover, it aims to discuss digital uses and digital competences within intergenerational and generational perspectives. The proposal is to assume as context the current digital media environment, which has shaped media history over the past decades. Non-Western voices covering generations, digital uses and competences are particularly welcome. Historically, media were mostly considered as reinforcements of the generational gap, mostly in the family context. Though research by Livingstone and Haddon (2009) found that the intergenerational gap is diminishing in time, according to Bolin & Skogerbø (2013), the digital era is contributing to straight the generations. Čuvalo (2017) discerns shared media repertoires among the youngest, so-called digital generation or digital natives and the older generation of digital immigrants (Thomas, 2011). In this sense, there is the need to work closely on life course perspectives as a possible explanation of the diminishing or perpetuating of the generational gap (Amaral & Daniel, 2018). The context of digital literacy reinforced activities by civil society and schools and can bring some light to the discussion of this need (Brites, 2017). Furthermore, a generational perspective in scholar and familiar environments can empower the discussion. There is a story to tell and gains to conquer from the historical reflection, although the real interconnection between the digital devices and the audiences is a recent issue. Research can benefit from a systematization from the past to the future and also in the current present. *Descriptors:* A historical and cross-national perspective on generations and the digital environment Non-media centric approach to media generations Generations and the context of the digital environment Generations and digital competences Generations and intergenerational approaches Digital literacy and generations Digital literacy and intergenerational dimensions Theoretical discussions on generations, digital uses and competencies To define and explore methodologies critically to better understand the audience of digital generations, namely alternative methodologies. Examples include media training, writing for different audiences, etc. - Engaging and maintaining relationships with communications professionals around the University and nearby academic communities - Serving as a member of the Center's leadership team, helping to make decisions about processes, staffing, and other management issues as they arise *Basic Qualifications* Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in Communications, Public Relations, or a related field required. *Additional Qualifications* - Advanced degree in a related field preferred. - Experience in journalism including experience working at a leading media organization and a network of personal connections to media professionals. - Broad knowledge of scholarly research, public policy and legislation, and industry developments in the fields of communication technology is critical, as is the ability to effectively communicate that knowledge to diverse public and private audiences. - Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. - Demonstrated sound judgment, exceptional ethical standards, discretion, and tact. - Background participating in, serving and engaging diverse communities. - Comfortable working both independently and closely with teams and collaborators in a diverse, dynamic environment. - Heart, verve, and vigor; a can-do attitude; a very good sense of humor and a strong desire to affect change in the world. - Experience with crisis management is nice to have. *Additional Information* As with all Berkman positions, this is a term appointment currently expected to extend through June 30, 2020, with a strong possibility of renewal based on continued funding and business needs. The role will work collaboratively across the organization, engaging with leadership, research and public programming staff and leveraging and engaging our diverse internal community of staff, fellows, interns, collaborators, partners, and alums. The Manager will help implement our communications strategy by translating the Center’s work using our website and other channels appropriate to our various audiences. The manager will set up and monitor analytics and use other qualitative measures of success where appropriate. They will also support the development and release of internal communications efforts including annual reports, community announcements, promotion of events, and media monitoring. The role will project manage multiple communications efforts at once, manage vendor relationships, and liaise with project teams and community members. If we want to make sure that AI-powered applications and solutions will benefit society at large and mitigate AI’s potential negative consequences, we need to overcome the widespread dichotomic (utopian/dystopian) thinking about AI. By offering different perspectives and engaging in critical conversations on the potential and impact of AI, this collection aims to invite all stakeholders involved to contribute to a more nuanced vision of how to make sure AI will deliver benefits for everyone, if at all possible (and what is needed to facilitate change). We call for contributions to a stream on gender and work in rural regions for the Gender Work and Organization conference, 24-26 June 2020 in University of Kent, Canterbury, UK. While much of the research on gender, work, organization and entrepreneurship is conducted in urban settings, we are interested in contributions that analyse the impact of a rural context on gendered working conditions and relationships. More discussion is needed on how rural and sparsely populated regions experience the current societal changes and their impact on working lives. Intersections of gender with age, race, ethnicity, class, caste and sexuality in relation to daily life around work need to be discussed with rurality in focus. QUT PhD Scholarship in Digital Platform Regulation This is a unique opportunity for a PhD student to work with a world-leading team on a major Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project, The Platform Governance Project: Rethinking Internet Regulation as Media Policy. The project is led by researchers in the QUT Digital Media Research Centre, working in collaboration with an international team including University of Sydney, Duke University, and the University of Salzburg. You will be working with internationally renowned researchers such as Professor Terry Flew (current President of the International Communication Association) and Professor Nicolas Suzor (ARC DECRA Fellow). We are seeking a PhD candidate whose work can situate digital platform companies in the shifting political economy of digital media, with particular reference to the changing nature of media industries and markets, issues around content governance, and the turn towards greater regulation of digital platforms as global tech giants increasingly dominate the internet.
