Dear Charles, You make a great point about categories of emotions at the end of your email. Scholars interested in emotions have many theories and ways of categorizing humans’ affective states (positive vs. negative; primary vs. secondary, etc.). First, I would urge your student to investigate different classifications of emotions and humans ways of expressing them. By jumping ahead this step and seeking commercial tools (sometimes with no solid background and clarification), we miss the chance of grounding our findings and reporting reliable analysis. I find Significance Analysis (Daiute, 2014)<https://uk.sagepub.com/en-gb/eur/narrative-inquiry/book240491> based on Labov and Waletzky (1997)<http://Labov,%20W.,%20&%20Waletzky,%20J.%20(1997).%20Narrative%20analysis:%….> work particularly useful in combining importance of linguistic elements and psychological states. Based on those readings, motivate your student to read the textual data (comments) repeatedly and come up with their own categorization. This step allows the researcher to be mindful about the contextually significant elements of the textual data. What clues can be used to infer the emotional tone of the comment? Ability to use R after this step would be especially useful because programming skills would allow the student to be flexible and not dependent on existing categories the above mentioned tools use. Jess suggested LICW. And Stu suggested Discover Text. Those two would be my only recommendations if researcher-led analysis is not possible for now. Call for panel participants We are looking for participants for an International Communication Association 2020 panel submission that will engage with the tension between Open Science and big data use by infrastructures and platforms. ICA 2020 takes place in Gold Coast, Australia from May 21-25, 2020. More info can be found here. <https://www.icahdq.org/page/2020CFP> Our proposed panel will focus on open communication, big data, infrastructures, and platforms. While open communication initiatives value transparency, collaboration, and public knowledge, these goals are often at odds with capitalistic arrangements of big data collection. Scholarship examining big data notes the issues of privacy and surveillance (Andrejevic, 2007; Introna & Wood, 2004; Esposti, 2014); the concerns related to data divides and asymmetry of access (Andrejevic & Gates, 2014); and the dangers of utilizing opaque, inexplicable, and correlative big data outputs for forms of so-called objective decision making (boyd & Crawford, 2012; Tenner, 2018). Likewise, the scholarship on platform infrastructures suggests that while they deliver essential social / cultural resources, they also prompt a recentralization of the internet that threatens to funnel data into increasingly segmented silos (Plantin & Punathambekar, 2019; Srnicek, 2017). Noting this, Plantin, Lagoze, Edwards, and Sandvig (2018) indicate that a “fraught relationship...currently exists between the public-oriented Open Web and locked-in ‘walled gardens’” of platforms and infrastructures (p. 301). To better understand this relationship, we are looking for theoretical and methodological engagements with big data platforms and infrastructures that specifically attend to the complexities of closed and open access, digital inequalities and divides, and affirmative attempts at open data usage. Cyber-Security syllabus or textbook?

Hello everyone, I was wondering whether anyone on this list has a recommendation for a cyber-security textbook (or syllabus) centered around policy or case studies. This fall, I will be teaching a new graduate course titled Public Policy of Cyber-Security, aimed at political science students. I’ll be taking a wide view of cyber security (looking at nation states but also the IoT and platforms), and ideally would like to focus on normative issues that are interesting to think about. If anyone has taught a similar course, I’d really love to hear your recommendations. University Student Dissertation Online Research Query

To whom it may concern, My name is Francesca and I'm a 4th-year University student within the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences (University of Malta). Since it is my last year of studies, I am currently working on my dissertation. My supervisor kindly suggested the I contact the Academy of Internet Researchers (whom I have also become an official member) regarding the following query. My dissertation research entitled Instagram and The Self: Exploitation or Empowerment? focuses on the portrayal of women on social media (my chosen social media platform is Instagram). My research is based on two specific media: women online as content creators (provocative images presented on Instagram by women as content creators – the why and the how) and the influence on women offline (how these images affect women in the real world - the psychological and emotional impact). My query is about analyzing within my academic field of studies specific images of ten females posted on Instagram that are within the public domain on Instagram (and not private). The analysis will be set on a specific set of questions by using check-listed instruments from relevant literature and analytically observe their body image, their facial expression, and the photos’ aesthetic composition. I would like to make it clear that the images I intend to analyze are only for my academic research. May I kindly ask for any recommendations given by the AOIR members Thanks in advance. We seek an individual whose research, expertise and skills in virtual/augmented/extended reality and media psychology will create innovative, interdisciplinary research exploring the cognitive implications of immersive technologies in the context of communication. This person's doctoral training may come from the fields of communications, psychology, information science, and/or human-computer interaction, with a research agenda focused on the uses, experiences, and the effects of immersive media. This person will be qualified to lead innovative, grant-funded research teams to advance theory and bridge knowledge and practice. This individual will provide graduate students in our Media Studies PhD program with strong theoretical orientation on the role and impact of immersive media from a psychological perspective, and will also be prepared to offer courses that bridge academia and practice, teaching undergraduates and professional masters students techniques for immersive world-building and/or immersive story-telling grounded in an understanding of uses and psychological effects of the medium. We seek a scholar who can address enduring questions of human communication in the context of immersive media, who can help develop new curriculum that further positions the SOJC as a thought leader in immersive media, and whose expertise is also cognizant of emerging industry trends. This position will be based at the University of Oregon's Portland campus and will take a leading role in supporting and shaping the Oregon Reality (OR) Lab. Faculty members at UO Portland gain unique research opportunities based on our "urban laboratory" environment and our proximity to a tremendous variety of technology and creative firms. This person will teach up to three courses per year for graduate students in the Strategic Communication and Multimedia Journalism programs in Portland, along with at least one course per year in the undergraduate public relations sequence and/or graduate programs on the Eugene campus.
