CFP: Special Issue for the International Communication Gazette: Comparing Communication Studies Beyond China Special Issue Guest Editors: Jun Liu, (University of Copenhagen) Chris Chao Su (University of Copenhagen) In 2004, Daniel C. Hallin and Paolo Mancini published their classic book, Comparing Media Systems: Three Models of Media and Politics, outlining three major models of media system development. Eight years later, the authors invited a group of scholars from outside Western Europe and North America to contribute papers and co-edited Comparing Media Systems Beyond the Western World (Hallin & Mancini, 2012), “calling for an extension of comparative analysis beyond a framework centered on Western cases” (p. 3). Cases such as those of Israel (Peri, 2012), Russia (Vartanova, 2012), South Africa (Hadland, 2012), and China (Zhao, 2012) were included in the “most similar systems” design to supplement the scope of their original framework. Against this background, this proposed special issue recommends further consideration of the Chinese case, referring to both similarities and differences between China and other countries of the world. Over the past thirty years, China has undergone extraordinary changes in its media and communication system, with significant implications, both domestically and internationally. Correspondingly, the scholarship on media and communication studies focusing on Greater China—including the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Singapore, and the global Chinese diaspora—has burgeoned in recent years, as witnessed by the rapidly increasing number of journals, such as the Chinese Journal of Communication and Global Media and China. Despite the significance of China's media and communication changes and the vigor of the scholarship addressing these changes, little is known about how such scholarship would tackle other subfields and the core debates and developments in communication studies beyond China. Such lacunae not only leads to the low visibility of China-specific research in some fields but also hinders potential opportunities for the development of universally applicable theories beyond the case of China. In sum, the proposed special issue offers a comparative and cross-cultural perspective on the current investigations about the Chinese media and communicative environment, provides a comprehensive and careful outlook on the insights to be gained from comparing the Chinese media system with its counterparts in the world, and ultimately attempts to reflect on both differences and similarities between China and other countries across a spectrum of social and cultural factors. In this proposed special issue, we look for original, rigorous, and creative contributions and reflections based on the communication phenomena in Greater China yet speak beyond the case of China. Importantly, we hope to reflect on the impact of communication studies addressing Greater China on debates and developments in a broader field of communication studies. The papers can be primarily theoretical or based on empirical studies, addressing micro level as well as macro level research questions. In all forms, the papers should make explicit, original, and substantial contributions to the relevance and the implications of their research beyond China. The Fellowship is an exciting opportunity for scholars to visit the Department, contribute to its academic life and form new collaborations. The focus of the Fellowship can be on social research methods, in the broadest sense, a key strength and unifying feature of the Department, or on a substantive area of interest within the Department (see here<https://www.surrey.ac.uk/department-sociology/research> for details of our research clusters, centres and staff interests). Applicants will normally hold, or recently have held, an established academic appointment in social science. The Fellowship committee regrets that it cannot consider applications from candidates seeking training or the updating of methodological skills. An award of £2,500 will be made as a contribution towards travel, accommodation and subsistence expenses incurred in holding the Fellowship. *Psychoanalysis, Sexualities and Networked Media* Edited by Jacob Johanssen (St. Mary’s University, jacob.johanssen(a)stmarys.ac.uk*)* For psychoanalysis, sexuality, how it is both individually thought about and lived and how it is culturally constructed, is key to understanding both the human psyche and social change. Freud believed that the sexual behaviour of an individual, from the earliest stages of development onwards, provided key insights into how they related to others and themselves in life more generally. While Freud stressed that there is no ‘normal’ sexuality and heterosexuality was a myth, his particular theories of female sexuality were nonetheless critiqued by feminist thinkers. Initially for Freud, the symptom itself was a distorted or covered manifestation of sexual activity which related to conflicts. Those ideas were developed by post-Freudian psychoanalysts in numerous ways. It is psychoanalysis that fundamentally contributed to the theorisation and understanding of the role that sexual desires and fantasies play in our (un)conscious forms of relating to ourselves and others. While psychoanalytic schools have come to understand sexuality in different ways, other disciplines such as queer theory, cultural studies and philosophy have grappled with and drawn on those conceptualisations of sexuality. Particular notions that are often taken for granted in every day discourse – perversion, fetishism, voyeurism – were (and are) developed by psychoanalysts. The call for papers for a special issue of Psychoanalysis, Culture and Society takes psychoanalytic theories of sexuality / sexualities and how they were adapted/critiqued by other disciplines as a starting point for analysing contemporary networked media, online spaces and digital phenomena. In the past two decades, the Internet and networked devices have not only transformed societies but also human agency and subjectivity. How we communicate and relate to others has been shaped by our engagement with and immersion in digital media, devices and platforms. Social media in particular can be seen as enablers of unprecedented levels of human communication and cooperation which result in a sense of recognition and security for individuals, at the same time users have become data points which are commodified, surveyed and tracked by companies, governments and other entities. Contemporary online communication is also often marked by strong levels of hatred, aggression and polarisation which are characterised by the symbolic, and sometimes physical, destruction of the other. This proposed special issue of Psychoanalysis, Culture and Society places a specific focus on sexualities in contemporary online spaces. Sexualities have become more flexible and fluid thanks to technology as they are facilitated through hook up apps like Tinder, or Grindr. In reproductive terms, devices connected to the Internet such as fertility and health check apps have also become available. The Internet facilitates an informative and pleasurable engagement with sexualities, be it through online content, or communities around sexual identities for example. Subjects reveal aspects about their sexualities online more than ever before. At the same time, much of mainstream pornography has been critiqued as depicting women as oppressed, sexualised objects aimed to satisfy a male gaze. Clinicians have also noted that pornography can impact young people’s sexual development in harmful ways. Perhaps somewhat related to the widespread engagement with some forms of pornography, women are discussed in certain online spaces (such as forums on Reddit or 4chan) in highly misogynistic terms. Such language is often inspired by right-wing discourse and imagery which has gained increasing visibility online. The #MeToo movement on the other hand has made use of social media for activist purposes in order to resist and expose the widespread sexual assault and harassment conducted by men. It has attracted criticism for some of the methods and narratives deployed which have led to false accusations for example. It is safe to say that the representation of and engagement with sexualities has exploded due to digital technologies. There is scope to interpret such aspects in depth through psychoanalysis in combination with other approaches. Dear colleagues, We hope this Call for Papers might be of interest to some of you on this list: We invite contributions for a Special Issue on Critical Robotics Research, to be published by the AI & Society Journal of Culture, Knowledge and Communication (Springer) http://link.springer.com/journal/146. This special issue seeks research contributions that explore the topic of Critical Robotics Research as an important emerging paradigm in the area of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) and related fields, including in particular the emerging field of Human-Machine Communication (HMC) (Guzman, 2018). In recent years, the design, use and study of robots and AI have increased in a variety of social settings, ranging from, e.g., therapy and care for older adults, to education and domestic life. In parallel with these developments, voices have been raised advocating for more human-centered and holistic approaches to research on robot technology (Ljungblad, Serholt, Barendregt, Lindgren, & Obaid, 2016; Šabanović, 2010). In particular, the need to critically address underlying technology-driven values (Fernaeus, Jacobsson, Ljungblad, & Holmquist, 2009; MacKenzie & Wajcman, 1999), and to question the role of machines in the process of communication (Guzman, 2018) have been emphasized. More interdisciplinary work is also required to assess the design and use of robots in an increasing range of social settings. The aim of this special issue is therefore to foster research contributions that explore the design and use of robots in social domains through holistic, interdisciplinary and ethical perspectives. Contributions that critically investigate the use of robots, and make visible the challenges and dilemmas of robot use both in communication with, and in the immediate surroundings of, humans, are especially encouraged. Consisting of workshops, a conference, and a smartphone film festival, the congress aims to promote mobile storytelling for effective communication in different areas ranging from community and civic engagement to new forms of storytelling, creativity and developments towards story making (Schleser and Berry 2018) and/or story-living (Google New Lab 2017). To be held on 17-19 January 2020 in Ningbo, China, IMSC focuses mobile, smartphone and pocket filmmaking, mobile innovation and mobile creativity. IMSC provides a forum for practitioners and scholars to showcase projects and discuss changes, challenges and chances of mobile storytelling. This call is interested in storytelling and its broad application in the digital world. We see narrative and non-narrative methods as innovation sandboxes to illuminate community engagement and creative transformation(s). We aim for a combination of theoretical and creative practice research explorations responding to and interacting with the opportunities and potential of emerging media and screen production. Presentations and showcases can include work-in-progress, project presentations, academic papers and conceptual provocations or pose questions at the intersection of storytelling and screen production. We welcome proposals for workshops to run in conjunction with the International Mobile Storytelling Congress (IMSC). Paper & project abstracts will be double blind peer reviewed. We accept video presentations but require presenters to join a Q&A session via Adobe Connect. Selected academic papers will be published as a volume (with the tentative title of Advances in Mobile Storytelling: Research and Practice co-edited by Schleser and Xu) of a book series of IGI Global while selected projects will be showcased by the 8th Mobile Innovation and Mobile Creativity Symposium and the 9th International Mobile, Pocket and Smartphone Film Screening & Festival.
