H2020 - mapping the recent transformations in the European media system
by Tommaso Venturini 01 Oct '19

01 Oct '19

Hello everyone, In little more than one month, the EU H2020 program will launch a large call for projects dedicated to the mapping of the "recent transformations in the European media system" (https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/oppor…) At the Public Data Lab and at the Digital Methods Initiative, we believe that no such mapping can be complete without a thorough investigation of the digital media landscape. Importantly, this investigation should include not only the main social platforms, but also the smaller and more hidden venues of online debate. If the whole "junk news" debate has taught us something, it is that the core and the peripheries of the media spheres are more closely connected that they used to be and that fringe groups and messages can suddenly be projected to the centre stage. Internet research therefore is not anymore a useful-yet-marginal addition to the survey of the media systems, but increasingly a central piece of its mapping. If you are interested in joining forces to answer this major EU call to map the EU media landscape, do not hesitate to get in touch with us off-list. Best regards, Public Data Lab (http://publicdatalab.org) & Digital Methods Initiative (http://digitalmethods.net) -- Tommaso Venturini | tommasoventurini.it <http://www.tommasoventurini.it> Center for Internet and Society CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research, France)

01 Oct '19

Dear AoIR 2019 Attendees, We are almost ready for this week’s Trust in the System #AoIR2019 conference in Brisbane! While many of you have already arrived on our shores, many are still in transit, some are attending the first of the satellite events, and some of us are making the final local preparations. Regardless of your current status, we are very excited to welcome you all to Brisbane for what promises to be an amazing week of conversations and exchange. There are a few things we would like to bring to your attention as you prepare for AoIR this week. 1. If you are arriving at the QUT campus and need to take a taxi/Uber to QUT Gardens Point, probably best to go to the drop-off point in front of Queensland Parliament. Then walk down the pedestrian road into campus. 2. The local committee has developed a Code of Conduct for this year’s conference. Could you all please familiarise yourself with this prior to commencing any AoIR activities this week: https://members.aoir.org/AoIR2019CodeofConduct 3. There have been a few last-minute changes to the Program. Could you all please look over the program and make sure these changes do not impact you directly (if there are any problems, please let me know immediately): https://www.conftool.org/aoir2019/index.php?page=browseSessions 4. While many will tell you pavlova is an Australian thing, it originated in New Zealand [https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/food/eat/jacinda-arderns-fiance-calls-out…] 5. Don’t forget about our extensive social program [https://aoir.org/aoir2019/excursionsforaoir2019/] Ariadna Matamoros Fernandez and Elija Cassidy are taking care of the Paddle and Prawns events, and Michael Dezuanni will take care of all of your koala exploration needs. 6. If you need any information about our local area, please refer to this page: https://aoir.org/aoir2019/traveling-to-brisbane/ 7. Our mobile app version of the program is now live and available here: https://aoir2019.sched.com/ 8. Please wear your name badge to ALL #AoIR2019 events. The catering staff will look for these to confirm you should be involved in the event. 9. If you are presenting and you are using your own device for a presentation it is your responsibility to bring any necessary adapters to connect to HDMI. All the QUT classrooms are HDMI only. 10. Registration is located in P block, 5th level, from 8am on Wednesday. We are looking forward to seeing you all soon and welcoming you to Brisbane. Report launch and discussion: WhatsApp Vigilantes
by Bhat2,R (pgr) 30 Sep '19

30 Sep '19

Apologies for cross-posting LSE Media and Communications Report launch and discussion: WhatsApp Vigilantes: An exploration of citizen reception and circulation of WhatsApp misinformation linked to mob violence in India by Shakuntala Banaji and Ram Bhat with Anushi Agarwal, Nihal Passanha and Mukti Sadhana Pravin 17th October 2019, 18.00 – 19.30 Thai Theatre, New Academic Building (NAB), LSE followed by a reception This discussion, chaired by Dr. Omar Al-Ghazzi, invites responses to new research conducted on WhatsApp forwarding of misinformation and mob violence in India. The abuse of applications such as WhatsApp to spread fake news, misinformation and disinformation has had dangerous consequences for hundreds of vulnerable groups, and nowhere more so than in India. Hundreds of people in the last five years have been publicly lynched to death, leading to the phrase ‘WhatsApp Lynchings’. Since October 2018, Dr. Shakuntala Banaji and Ram Bhat have been working with field researchers in India conducting qualitative research in four large states, interacting with more than 275 people in focus group discussions, in-depth interviews and reviewing more than 1000 messages on WhatsApp to produce typologies both of Indian disinformation/misinformation and of the users most likely and least likely to forward these messages. The discussion will include a presentation of the findings, comments from our expert audience and responses. Further details about the research study are available here<http://www.lse.ac.uk/media-and-communications/research/research-projects/wh…>. We expect the event to be heavily over-subscribed and seats are limited, so please confirm your participation at the earliest. You can RSVP to Harshita Murarka, H.Murarka(a)lse.ac.uk<mailto:H.Murarka@lse.ac.uk>, who will let you know if we are out of space. We look forward to seeing you there. Dr. Shakuntala Banaji (S.Banaji(a)lse.ac.uk<mailto:S.Banaji@lse.ac.uk>) and Ram Bhat (R.Bhat2(a)lse.ac.uk<mailto:R.Bhat2@lse.ac.uk>)

CFP - Algorithms for Her? International Conference at King's College, London
by Sophie Helen Bishop 30 Sep '19

30 Sep '19

“Algorithms for her? feminist approaches to digital infrastructures, cultures and economies” January 17th 2020 - King’s College London 10am-5pm followed by a wine reception Our daily lives are increasingly governed by algorithmic processes of selection, identification and discrimination. This international symposium focuses on the intersectional forms of injustice that algorithms – and the systems in which they are embedded – help to propagate and sustain. Given the significance and ubiquity of such processes in everyday life, and their disproportionate effects on those marginalised across intersections of gender, sexuality, class and race, this event will create a dedicated space for the discussion of algorithmic forms of oppression and inequality. Algorithms for Her? seeks to support the synthesis of in-depth analysis of algorithms – together with their functions and entanglements – with critical feminist works that meaningfully examine the production and ethics of bias. "Newness" is often fetishised in analyses of digital culture. The approaches sidelined by this fetishisation are often those by women and scholars of colour, who struggle to have their contributions included in dominant canons of thought. In some areas of scholarship we may be reaching ‘peak algorithm’ but relatively few studies can meaningfully be called inclusive, reflective or feminist. This symposium seeks to give platform to perspectives on algorithms and algorithmic culture that are under-represented in the academy. We welcome both traditional conference presentations (15 minutes in length) and creative alternatives such as performances or artistic interventions. We invite contributions related to any of the following areas: - Intersectional feminist work critically examining platforms and their economies/ approaches to machine learning, content moderation and algorithms (broadly defined). - Intersectional feminist work examining software/tools/app design and infrastructure. - Intersectional feminist work on platform labour and inequalities. - Feminist methodologies for studying and teaching algorithms and the ethical questions they raise. - Industry/nonprofit cases of addressing discrimination/bias sustained by and 'within' technologies. Keynote Speakers *Professor Bev Skeggs,* Distinguished Professor at Lancaster University and Academic Advisor at London School of Economics International Inequalities Institute. *Dr Taina Bucher,* Associate Professor at the University of Oslo. Keynote roundtable and Practitioners *Dr Joanne Armitage*, University of Leeds / *Dr Ysabel Gerrard*, The University of Sheffield /* Dr Francesca Sobande*, Journalism, Media and Culture at Cardiff University / *Dr Antonina Puchkovskaia*, IMTO University in St Petersburg, Russia *Please send proposals of 300 words along with a 50 word bio to algorithmsforher(a)gmail.com <algorithmsforher(a)gmail.com> by 30th October 2019. * A small number of travel bursaries will be available for early career researchers who do not have recourse to institutional funds. If you would like to be considered for a bursary, please add a short (100 words) paragraph to your proposal explaining why you are eligible. Given that these bursaries are limited, please only apply if you have no other funding options. -- Dr Sophie Bishop www.sophiebishop.co.uk | @sophiehbishop

emotion detection machine?
by Charles M. Ess 29 Sep '19

29 Sep '19

Dear colleagues, One of our students is wanting to analyze emotional content in in the comment fields of a major newspaper vis-a-vis specific hot-button issues. She has a good tool (I think) for scrapping the data - but she is stymied over the choice of an emotion analysis tool. She has looked at Senpy (http://senpy.gsi.upm.es/#test) and Twinword <https://www.twinword.com/api/emotion-analysis.php> - the latter seems the most accurate, but it is also expensive. She has recently discovered DepecheMood emotion lexicons (Staiano, J., & Guerini, M. (2014). Depechemood: a lexicon for emotion analysis from crowd-annotated news. arXiv preprint arXiv:1405.1605.) - but this suffers from a lack of clarity in terms of explaining its emotional categories: awe, indifference, sad, amusement , annoyance, joy, fear and anger. For my part, I am entirely clueless. Any suggestions that she might pursue would be greatly appreciated. best, - charles ess -- Professor in Media Studies Department of Media and Communication University of Oslo <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/people/aca/charlees/index.html> Postboks 1093 Blindern 0317 Oslo, Norway c.m.ess(a)media.uio.no
