The International Conference on Digital Information Management is a multidisciplinary conference on digital information management, science and technology. *Psychoanalysis, Culture & Society* *Special Issue: Psychoanalysis, Sexualities and Networked Media* Edited by Jacob Johanssen (St. Mary’s University, jacob.johanssen(a)stmarys.ac.uk*)* *Call for papers* For psychoanalysis, sexuality, how it is both individually thought about and lived and how it is culturally constructed, is key to understanding both the human psyche and social change. Freud believed that the sexual behaviour of an individual, from the earliest stages of development onwards, provided key insights into how they related to others and themselves in life more generally. While Freud stressed that there is no ‘normal’ sexuality and heterosexuality was a myth, his particular theories of female sexuality were nonetheless critiqued by feminist thinkers. Initially for Freud, the symptom itself was a distorted or covered manifestation of sexual activity which related to conflicts. Those ideas were developed by post-Freudian psychoanalysts in numerous ways. It is psychoanalysis that fundamentally contributed to the theorisation and understanding of the role that sexual desires and fantasies play in our (un)conscious forms of relating to ourselves and others. While psychoanalytic schools have come to understand sexuality in different ways, other disciplines such as queer theory, cultural studies and philosophy have grappled with and drawn on those conceptualisations of sexuality. Particular notions that are often taken for granted in every day discourse – perversion, fetishism, voyeurism – were (and are) developed by psychoanalysts. The call for papers for a special issue of Psychoanalysis, Culture and Society takes psychoanalytic theories of sexuality / sexualities and how they were adapted/critiqued by other disciplines as a starting point for analysing contemporary networked media, online spaces and digital phenomena. In the past two decades, the Internet and networked devices have not only transformed societies but also human agency and subjectivity. How we communicate and relate to others has been shaped by our engagement with and immersion in digital media, devices and platforms. Social media in particular can be seen as enablers of unprecedented levels of human communication and cooperation which result in a sense of recognition and security for individuals, at the same time users have become data points which are commodified, surveyed and tracked by companies, governments and other entities. Contemporary online communication is also often marked by strong levels of hatred, aggression and polarisation which are characterised by the symbolic, and sometimes physical, destruction of the other. This proposed special issue of Psychoanalysis, Culture and Society places a specific focus on sexualities in contemporary online spaces. Sexualities have become more flexible and fluid thanks to technology as they are facilitated through hook up apps like Tinder, or Grindr. In reproductive terms, devices connected to the Internet such as fertility and health check apps have also become available. The Internet facilitates an informative and pleasurable engagement with sexualities, be it through online content, or communities around sexual identities for example. Subjects reveal aspects about their sexualities online more than ever before. At the same time, much of mainstream pornography has been critiqued as depicting women as oppressed, sexualised objects aimed to satisfy a male gaze. Clinicians have also noted that pornography can impact young people’s sexual development in harmful ways. Perhaps somewhat related to the widespread engagement with some forms of pornography, women are discussed in certain online spaces (such as forums on Reddit or 4chan) in highly misogynistic terms. Such language is often inspired by right-wing discourse and imagery which has gained increasing visibility online. The #MeToo movement on the other hand has made use of social media for activist purposes in order to resist and expose the widespread sexual assault and harassment conducted by men. It has attracted criticism for some of the methods and narratives deployed which have led to false accusations for example. It is safe to say that the representation of and engagement with sexualities has exploded due to digital technologies. There is scope to interpret such aspects in depth through psychoanalysis in combination with other approaches. Possible topics include but are not limited to: - Psychoanalytic approaches to sexuality - Psychoanalysis and other conceptualisations of sexuality (e.g. Foucauldian, Deleuze-Guattarian, queer theoretical) - Clinical perspectives on sexuality and digital media - Repression and its status today - Pleasures, unpleasures – Eros and the death drive - #MeToo and activism against sexualised violence - The Alt-Right and online misogyny - Online pornography - Livestreaming and camming - Hook-up apps - The Internet of Things (fertility devices, sex toys, sex robots, etc.) - Social media - Games and gaming cultures - Virtual reality and forms of simulation Please send abstracts of no longer than 500 words to Jacob Johanssen ( jacob.johanssen(a)stmarys.ac.uk) by 09 September 2019. Hello, The annual Fairness Accountability Transparency (FAT*) conference has a new look: first time in Europe, with a (soon to be announced) new name, and a brand new Social Sciences & Humanities (SSH) track: https://fatconference.org/2020/callforpapers.html Primarily a Computer Science + Law conference, FAT* is now evolving in response to critical scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities about the algorithmic shaping of everyday life and social and political institutions; that there needs to be more than just a computational tweak to ensure fairness and manage bias in these socio-technical systems. I am honoured to be part of the SSH track committee this year. The CfP is not formally out yet, but on behalf of the SSH team I am sending out an advance notice for people in this community. Please look out for the CfP in the coming weeks (on Twitter follow @fatconference). Full papers are due August third week, which is not a very long time away. So please start thinking about that half-written paper you have tucked away and that can be finished in time for this call. Abstract The ever-increasing demand for online content moderation and user profiling sees the adaptation of web intelligence concepts that were developed in good faith, into a censorship and surveillance apparatus owned by corporations and national agencies. Consequently, users are bound to an Orwellian Internet where mainstream platforms such as search engines, social media, and content providers place the blame for filter bubbles and extensive user behavioral analysis on artificial intelligence. This is alarming, since it is particularly difficult to distinguish between AI bias and deliberate human intervention. TICS aims to explore the technological, socio-economic, and legal means and driving forces behind these issues, and to propose alternative directions for building a semantic and human-centric web that promotes empowerment of individuals to decide on how their identities are or are not constructed and aggregated online. Topics The goal of TICS is to raise awareness around the implications of network interference, by inviting researchers from complementary disciplines to consider the effect of their own domain on online censorship and surveillance. [With apologizes for cross-posting] Call for papers: Media representations and narratives of masculinities across Europe The journal Social Studies is announcing a call for papers for a monothematic issue with a working title Media representations and narratives of masculinities across Europe. The editors of the issue are Inês Amaral and Sofia José Santos (University of Coimbra). This special issue aims to bring together critical analysis focusing on media representations, discourses, narratives and counter-narratives of what it means to be and behave “like a man” in today’s Europe. It wishes to contribute to a comprehensive reflection on the stereotypes that underlie discourses in the mass media and in the online media, and on how cultural productions co-opt, confront, criticize, renegotiate and seek to promote gender alternatives that challenge gender inequality. This special issue welcomes theoretical and empirical articles that use qualitative, quantitative or mixed methodologies and focus on media representations and narratives of men and masculinities, their relation to policy and legislation, counter-narratives to the stereotyped representations of gender roles, the relation between feminism and masculinities and the fallout of the MeToo movement, social media activism, digital literacy, critical media literacy and other related topics. Papers focusing on research methods with which to address these issues are also welcome. He taught at University of Illinois, Urbana- Champaign from 1974-1986, where he was head of the Division of Quantitative and Industrial/Organizational Psychology, and promoted to Full Professor in 1982. He came to California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) in 1986 on leave from University of Illinois, and made the position here permanent in 1988. He is a founder and current co-director of the Decision Research Center at CSUF. He was named Outstanding Professor for CSUF in 1991-92. He has published more than 140 scientific articles and three books. In the last decade, he has had five grants from the National Science Foundation and one from the American Psychological Association. He served as president of the Society for Mathematical Psychology, 2002-2003, president of the Society for Judgment and Decision Making, 2008-2009, and president of the Society for Computers in Psychology, 2009-2010. Charles "Chick" M. Judd is College Professor of Distinction Emeritus at University of Colorado, Boulder. He received his PhD in 1976 from Columbia University after getting a B.A. from Yale. He then became Assistant Professor, then Associate Professor at Harvard University. In 1981 he became an Associate Professor at University of Colorado, Boulder, where he was promoted to Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience in 1987 and College Professor of Distinction in 2006. He has been a Visiting Professor at Oxford University, the University of California Berkeley, and Stanford University, among others. He served as the editor of both the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. His research has been devoted to two main areas: social cognition and research methods. In the former area, he has published widely on stereotyping, prejudice, and intergroup relations, particularly looking at causes and consequences of perceived group differences. In the later area, his work has been devoted to issues of mediation, moderation, the analysis of data with dependencies, and mixed models with multiple random factors. Among numerous awards, he received the Thomas Ostrom Award for Lifetime Contributions to Social Cognition Research, 2010 and in 2012 the Jacob Cohen Award from the American Psychological Association. He also was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. Gary McClelland is a Professor emeritus of the University of Colorado, Boulder, received his PhD in 1971 from the University of Michigan, and has been a pioneer in the use of interactive web-based graphics to support understanding of methodological concepts in both scientific journal articles and in educational materials (e.g., Irwin & McClelland, 2003; McClelland, 1997, 2000). Gary's two primary research interests are (1) judgment and decision making and (2) statistical methods. He is a founding member of the Society for Judgment and Decision Making and a founding fellow of the Association for Psychological Science. He and Chick Judd in 2012 jointly won the Jacob Cohen Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Mentoring by the American Psychological Association, Div. 5. Ulf-Dietrich Reips is a Full Professor at the University of Konstanz. He received his PhD in 1996 from the University of Tübingen. His research focuses on Internet-based research methodologies, the psychology of the Internet, measurement, development, perceptions of inequality, cognition of causality, personality, privacy, Social Media, mobile experience sampling, collective behavior, and Big Data. In 1994, he founded the Web Experimental Psychology Lab, the first laboratory for conducting real experiments on the World Wide Web. Ulf was a founder of the German Society for Online Research, was elected the first non-North American president of the Society for Computers in Psychology and he is the founding editor of the free open access journal International Journal of Internet Science. Ulf and his team (http://iscience.uni-konstanz.de/) develop and provide methods and free Web tools for researchers, teachers, students, and the public. They received numerous awards for their Web applications (available from the iScience Server at (http://iscience.eu/) and methodological work serving the research community.

The ASIS&T Special Interest Group for Social Informatics <https://asistsigsi.wordpress.com/> (SIG SI) is issuing a *call for nominations* for the 2019 Annual *Social Informatics Best Paper Awards*, with nominations due by *July 10*. Self-nominations are welcome and the nomination process is quite short, as detailed below. They are often the first to adopt new technologies and platforms, to experiment with modes of production and practices of sharing, and?due to the significant role that social relations play in their lives?often spend significant time and energy socializing online (Ito et al., 2009, 2019; Jenkins et al., 2016). Youth digital participation has been explored as an opportunity for areas including learning and professional development (e.g., Ito et al., 2019); self-expression and identity exploration (e.g., Renninger, 2015); social connection (e.g., Weinstein, 2018); as well as for civic and political participation and expression (e.g., Kligler-Vilenchik & Literat, 2018). At the same time, youth digital participation should not be uncritically celebrated: Rather, researchers should be cognizant of the nuances of youth participation and a focus on when, how, why and for what youth digital participation matters (Literat et al., 2018). For this issue, we invite theoretical and empirical (quantitative, qualitative or mixed-methods) papers that delve into youth digital participation from such a nuanced perspective, including papers which explore: - The potentials and opportunities for youth digital participation, including learning, self-expression, social connection, identity formation and more; - Youth civic/political expression and participation, including civic learning, cross-cutting exposure, and political socialization; - How young people?s participatory practices in digital spaces contribute (or not) to youth empowerment and agency; - Youth perspectives on their own digital participation; - Challenges and risks around youth participation; - The digital participation of marginalized youth; - Methodological perspectives and innovative approaches to studying youth digital participation; - Ethical issues related to the study of youth digital participation.
