Larp about technology?

Hello everyone - I just spent the week at a Larp camp (live action roleplaying) with my kids and absolutely loved it. I’m thinking a Larp about a near future drenched in ethical dilemmas about technology use might be brilliant for research dissemination, teaching, and maybe research too. Conveniently enough, it turns out two of the Larp writers involved with the camp I was at have recently been hired by my university’s freshly renovated museum to facilitate dramatic participatory research dissemination, and they’re keen on developing a larp with me. Do any of you have experience using larping in research dissemination or teaching at university level? Or do you know examples of technology-rich larps? Or have any other suggestions? Hello all, Taylor Owen (McGill University) and I are pleased to launch a new Research Award ahead of the 2019 federal election in Canada. The Digital Ecosystem Research Challenge <https://www.digitalecosystem.ca/?lang=en> aims to support research and innovation exploration into uses and impacts of digital media in the 2019 federal election in Canada. There are four award categories: $10 000, $25 000, $50 000, and $100 000. Recipients of the awards will also have access to pooled survey data (a regular nationally representative survey and a metered survey) as well as social media, web, and online publication data that we will be collecting. Call for proposals: Through a series of Research Awards, the Digital Ecosystems Research Challenge aims to support research and innovative exploration into the impacts and uses of digital media during the 2019 Federal Election in Canada. This research can use any method(s), could involve tool development or licensing, and can focus on any relevant topic-area related to digital media and this election. Award recipients will join a collaborative effort to understand the digital ecosystem during this election. Recipients will receive access to digital and survey data which might otherwise be too difficult or costly to obtain for small research teams. Recipients will also receive funding to support research activities between July 2019 and February 2020. There are four award categories: $10 000, $25 000, $50 000, and $100 000. The number of awards in each category will vary depending on applications received. We hope to make 2-3 awards in the $100 000 category with greater numbers of awards in the other categories. All award categories include access to processed data which will be determined on a case by case basis. Available data sources include social media, online news, and web data detailing the media discourse in the lead up to and during the election as well as access to the results of an ongoing survey of voter behaviour and metered media consumption. Technical and research support to analyze these data will also be available. Applicants are strongly encouraged to reach out to Prof. Taylor Owen ( taylor.owen(a)mcgill.ca) to discuss their specific data needs in advance of submitting their application. Academic researchers and civil society groups with an academic institution-based partner are encouraged to apply. Teams can consist of PhD students, Postdoctoral Fellows, Faculty Members, and other researchers from civil society groups. The PI listed on the first page of the application form must be based at an academic institution in order for us to transfer funds. Award winners must contribute to the collaboration in the following ways: 1. 1. Attend a mandatory virtual workshop on data strategy the week of July 22, 2019; 2. Provide a short progress update (2-4 paragraphs) via email on September 30, 2019; 3. Contribute to a public report which will summarize the findings across all projects. Each winning team will produce a written summary of initial findings and summary of activities (an outline will be provided in advance, approximately 2000 words) by January 15, 2020; 4. Attend a two-day conference at the University of Ottawa on February 20-21, 2020. The cost for at least one team member to attend this conference (travel, accommodation, and meals) must be included in your budget. It is also expected that all results of the projects developed should be made publicly available within a reasonable amount of time from the end date of the project. We encourage researchers to combine this work with their existing projects or to supplement this digital data with other sources. It is the responsibility of award recipients ensure ethics approval at home institutions. Acceptable budget lines can include: Direct research costs, costs to develop or licence research tools, salaries (RAs, external researchers), travel related to research and travel to Ottawa in February 2020 to participate in the post-election conference (mandatory for at least one team member but multiple team members are encouraged to attend), public dissemination of findings. We are unable to cover institutional overhead or provide release time for full time academic appointments. There will be a reporting requirement at the end of the project. A grant agreement between uOttawa and the host institute of the PI will be required for all meritorious projects, details to follow. Hi Jill and everyone, I missed a few messages, so this may have been mentioned already: Ruth Catlow, of Furtherfield <https://furtherfield.org/> (London/UK), has done some interesting LARPing (some of it developed with Ben Vickers, curator of digital at The Serpentine). This was mostly done in the context of art/tech and financial activism, specifically in the ‘crypto’ realm – i.e., LARPs about designing/implementing crypto currencies. In other words, very tech-heavy context, but the LARP offers a way to generalise/abstract that and approach it from a more conceptual angle. I’m not sure to which extent these LARPing efforts are documented online (I know at least one is: it took place at MoneyLab #3 in Amsterdam in 2016). In any case, I could imagine that she’d be willing to share some ideas/materials regarding the process. I’m currently in early stages developing a series of LARP workshops with Ruth, for participants aged roughly 15-25, on the concept of speculative futures of cashless societies and their community impact. The promise of extraterritorially storing backups of critical data and information systems (in so-called ‘data embassies’) - and operating them from a secure data centre outside of a State’s own territorial borders - will continue to elicit more interest from governments that are today faced with increasing, multifaceted uncertainties and disruptions: from cyber-attacks and natural hazards, to legitimate threats to State sovereignty and territorial integrity. But in doing so, the Data Embassy begins to open up a much wider conversation at the intersection of cybersecurity, geopolitics and law. Debates are coalescing around the extraterritoriality of data (Eichensehr, 2017) - from nation-state claims over data sovereignty to disputes over jurisdiction when storing government data in the cloud - and the extensive impact this may have upon our long-held assumptions over contemporary politics, diplomacy and law. To date, academic debate on extraterritorial data storage has remained scant - even more so when considering the conceptual nature of the data embassy. The aim of this workshop, therefore, is to bring together a wide variety of interdisciplinary voices and perspectives in order to drive forward this emerging agenda. Call for Papers: Constructing Young Selves in a Digital Media Ecology: Youth Cultures, Practices and Identity A Two-day Symposium Department of Communication and Media Studies, School of Economics and Political Science, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and Information, Communication & Society (iCS). Dates: Thursday 4 and Friday 5 June 2020 https://sites.google.com/view/ics2020conference/home The development of young people’s identities and sense of selfhood is widely recognized as being a social activity undertaken through interaction and feedback with significant others. Advancing beyond earlier top-down models of socialization, whereby parents and teachers were largely seen as responsible for transmitting stable cultural norms, knowledge, political attitudes, religious beliefs and social practices to young people, contemporary understanding has instead foregrounded the active, dynamic, co-construction of young selves. Such approaches have not only drawn attention to the active engagement of young people in shaping their own identities but has also emphasized the wider social, political, economic, cultural contexts that frame the possibilities for the interactive realization of personhood. Most profoundly, and the focus of this international symposium, for the current generation of young people, the active construction of self is significantly mediated by and through a digital media ecology of communications networks, algorithms and platforms. These emergent networked environments have led to celebrations about the potential to enhance the development of young selves through wider access to knowledge, cultures, beliefs, identities and the opportunities to perform such self-formation through online interaction with diverse others. But it has also produced moral panics for those concerned about the perceived negative effects of digital media, such as attention deficit, the break-down of authority, dumbing down of education, infantilizing politics, and the weakening of traditional family ties. Premised upon a notion of youth as a social construction, as well as upon its permeability, and taking into account how young people - whether as young children, tweens, teenagers, or late twentysomething, whether in the West or outside of it- are growing up with significant access to globalized media and transmedia platforms and narratives, this two-day international symposium will critically investigate the issues presented by the construction of young selves within the contemporary digital media ecology. With the aim to grasp the complexity and diversity of most young people’s experiences and practices with online technologies, we invite original research findings and theoretical analysis addressing (though not exclusively) such questions as: • What role for young people do traditional markers of identity such as social class, religion, family, or geography play in online group interaction? • As increasingly more young people find themselves geographically dispersed and living transitional lives in immigrant communities or in refugee camps, what kind of possibilities for connectedness, dialogue and identity-making online technologies have to offer? • What value are social media platforms for gay, transgender, queer, atheist, or differently abled young people as spaces for socialization? • How much are young people’s political norms and engagement practices facilitated by digital communication? • How does everyday online engagement affect interaction between young people and significant others such parents, teachers and other traditional ‘authority’ figures? • Does social networking influence learning practices, competencies or curriculum design? • What are young people’s attitudes and actual use of digital media in everyday life? • How should we assess the significance of celebrity culture for young people’s development of self? • Are young people more likely to develop a transnational outlook as a consequence of the digital media ecology? CALL FOR PAPERS The 14th Workshop on Challenged Networks (CHANTS 2019) http://conferences.ece.unm.edu/chants2019/ colocated with ACM Mobicom 2019, the 25th Annual International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking Oct 21-25, Los Cabos, Mexico Scope and Overview Challenged networks comprise those situations where communication is desired, but traditional Internet architectures fail to provide it effectively. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing as well as challenged IoT. CHANTS builds on the success of the thirteen previous CHANTS workshops and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in new directions of challenged networking in concrete application scenarios and demonstrators in areas such as autonomous driving, underwater robots, emergency response operations, underground mining, interplanetary missions, polar research and unmanned aerial vehicles. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo and poster submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative solutions or applications for challenged networks. All papers shall be forward-looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research.
