Due to the end of the semester rush, the deadline for submitting book proposals for *The Whole World is Watching Live--Legal and Ethical Issues of Live Streaming*, has been extended to *May 15, 2019*. Sarina Chen Professor Dept. of Communication Studies Univ. of Northern Iowa *************************************** Call for Book Chapter Proposals: The Whole World is Watching Live--Legal and Ethical Issues of Live Streaming On August 28, 1968, when anti-war demonstrators were beaten by police outside the Conrad Hilton Hotel in Chicago where the Democratic National Convention was held, demonstrators chanted, "The whole world is watching." The incident was recorded by television crews, and the footage of the incident was broadcast subsequently. Due to the broadcast, the chant became famous. "The whole world is watching" takes on a new meaning in the 2010s with the use of live streaming on social media. Personal activities, social movements, and even crimes can now be and are live streamed. The most shocking incident was the live streaming of mass shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand, on March 15, 2019. Although live streaming crime is not new, live streaming mass shooting is. In light of this tragedy, my colleagues and I would like to invite researchers to help shed light on legal and ethical issues of live streaming. Topics to be addressed include, but not limited to: - Live streaming and crime - Live streaming and deviance - Live streaming and celebritism - Live streaming and evidences - Live streaming and (eye)witness - Social control of live streaming - Sharing live streamed videos - Social media and hate crime - Social media and white nationalism - Social media and "friends" - Social media and positive communication We are seeking book chapter proposals for an edited volume, The Whole World is Watching Live: Legal and Ethical Issues of Live Streaming. Any theoretical perspective is welcome. No preference on research methods either. New article about Network Analysis and Hackerspaces

Dear Air-L members, I would like to share my recently published article : Sandra Álvaro (2019) "A topological space for design, participation and production. Tracking spaces of transformation", Journal of Peer Production, Issue #13 http://peerproduction.net/editsuite/issues/issue-13-open/peer-reviewed-pape… In this study, I applied the tool Hype - developed at the Media Lab at Sciences Po- to tracking the online relations between hackerspaces within the general web. Furthermore, I applied network analysis to answer some research questions concerning the mapping of global and local relations and the collective projects shared across different Hackerspaces. One of the anonymous reviewers defends the opinion that: " The quantitative analysis presented in this article is interesting to some extent but not sufficient to support the ambitious concepts put forward in the introduction.". I would like to take advantage of this comment and open a discussion with the members of this community about the significance of quantitative methods for dealing with questions concerning big communities and complex assemblages. I wrote a short chapter some time ago on dark patterns in this collection using a range of different sources, a sort of evil media inspired analysis - https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1057/9781137437204_13 I have to admit it was a bit sketchy, my thoughts on it have probably changed a bit. I still think the lineage through media theoretical and anthropological accounts of trapping is quite interesting though, including people like Alfred Gell or Vilém Flusser - see Nick Seaver's recent work on algorithms as traps or Benedict Singleton's dissertation work on the rise of service design for some uses of these frameworks. There's also the history of design patterns first proposed by architect Christopher Alexander, which was then taken up by software developers in the 80s and 90s, most famously through object-oriented programming, which spread into through other more specific domains like interface design or even business thinking. O'Reilly's Web 2.0 manifesto was subtitled "Design Patterns and Business Models for the Next Generation of Software" after all. Design patterns establish a shared vocabulary, a shared set of practices that are easily recognisable and, of course, reiterable. Alexander described them in terms of a language - and in his respect, they offer an interesting way to establish a context, a collective comprehension. The concept also has links to information theory in Alexander's early experiments with computational analysis of urban space, and habituation in the reiterative practices of programming or user interaction more generally (another way to read what Wendy Chun calls habitual media imo). But that said, Harry Brignull's analysis of dark patterns is still the best account in my opinion - and I wouldn't describe this as 'a journalism', but rather an internal critique within the UX industry to identify and share contexts where unethical interface design is practiced.
