Social software (e.g., blogs, wikis, social bookmarking systems, media sharing services, social networks) is increasingly being used for e-learning purposes, helping to create novel learning experiences and knowledge. In the world of pervasive Internet, learners are also evolving: the so-called "digital natives" want to be in constant communication with their peers, they expect an individualized instruction and a personalized learning environment, which automatically adapt to their individual needs. The challenge in this context is to provide intelligent and adaptive support for collaborative learning, taking into consideration the individual differences between learners. This workshop deals with current research on the interplay between collaboration and personalization issues for supporting intelligent learning environments. Its aim is to provide a forum for discussing new trends and initiatives in this area, including research about the planning, development, application, and evaluation of intelligent learning environments, where people can learn together in a personalized way through social interaction with other learners. The workshop is targeted at academic researchers, developers, educationists and practitioners interested in innovative uses of social media and adaptation techniques for the advancement of intelligent learning environments. The proposed field is interdisciplinary and very dynamic, taking into account the recent advent of Web 2.0 and ubiquitous personalization, and it is hoped to attract a large audience. WeChat/Skype ethical issues

Dear colleagues, My name is Loretta and I am a Senior Tutor at the University of Manchester. I am currently supervising a number of Chinese Master’s students for their dissertation projects. Most of them want to either go to China and conduct face-to-face interviews with Chinese research participants in China, or remain in the UK and conduct online interviews with the same sample using WeChat, Skype. The former is usually deemed medium-risk (i.e. related to research outside the EU/EEA, in countries with travel advisory, etc.) but with new data protection guidelines in the UK (GDPR and all), university ethics committee is now classifying audio/video data collected through these online mediums as medium-risk as well, even when the data is collected here in the UK. I am hoping that you can advise on how students might enhance data protection as they outline the main ethical issues with this aspect of their research design? Is it wishful thinking that there might be a way data collection through Skype/WeChat can be assessed to be low-risk? Many thanks. Best wishes, Loretta Anthony-Okeke

CDs and DVDs? + potentially inappropriate query

Dear colleagues, I am revising my _Digital Media Ethics_ for a 3rd edition (!!), due out early next year. A first query: an important criticism raised by an astute and most helpful reviewer has to do with (a) using an example of stealing a CD and (b) a larger discussion of FLOSS and copyleft schemes such as Creative Commons licensing, etc. The reviewer observes that (a) his/her students simply will not recognize or relate to the example involving a CD as, briefly, streaming services have largely taken over music consumption practices and very few, if any, students still purchase CDs. Similarly (b) FLOSS is more or less no longer a relevant topic; rather discussion of copyright / copyleft is now much more focused on remix practices. Based on what I know of the US/UK contexts, the reviewer is clearly spot on, and I'm genuinely very grateful for the insightful critiques and constructive suggestions, and will do my best to pursue these. At the same time, however - and this, at last, leads to the query - I'm wondering how culturally/nationally variable these points may be? That is: (a) I know that in this here Scandinavia, despite the overwhelming predominance of consumption via streaming services, CDs (and DVDs) are still prominently on offer, not only in brick-and-mortar and online stores: they are also _de rigueur_ at every concert I've attended, i.e., for sale at the end thereof. There is no doubt that their sales numbers have plummeted - now outdone by vinyl in some cases - but here, I have the impression, they remain familiar artifacts? Similarly (b) I think I know that interest in FLOSS production and distribution remains strong in Latin America and at least some parts of Asia? So: only for the sake of having a better global sense of these points - if AoIR-ists can offer culturally-/nationally-specific quick characterizations of how far (a) physical media such as CDs do / not remain relevant in especially student music consumption, and/or (b) FLOSS - including ongoing development and distribution of software (beyond the usual suspects of Mozilla products, wikipedia, etc.) is / no longer of any significance? I hope this query might be of general interest as it would give us at least a quick and dirty snapshot of all of this. Again, the point is not to somehow counter an important critique and helpful suggestion. On the contrary, I gratefully take the points and suggestions - but want / need to know how far these may hold globally as the book is aimed towards a global audience. Second - potentially inappropriate - query. In conjunction with this revision, the publisher (Polity Press) has asked me to develop a list of colleagues who may be interested in receiving a review copy of the book when it is published - along with a list of journals that might likewise be interested in reviewing it. We invite you to be part of With/in Digital, the postgraduate conference for Warwick’s Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies taking place on June 27th. With/in Digital is a postgraduate conference organised by students from the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies (CIM). It aims to provide a space to explore different notions of participation and being with/in the digital, either as a subject for study or as a research method. We invite contributions from MA and PhD students who engage with/in the digital from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, such as media studies, aesthetics, art, cultural studies, design, political science, computer science, machine learning, big data, business studies, sociology, or anthropology. We are especially interested in works that take an interdisciplinary approach. The deadline for submission has been extended to May 19th. Participation is open to CIM, Warwick, and external MA and PhD students. We strongly encourage submissions of work in progress (for example, MA dissertation outlines), as this conference will be a space to share work, be inspired by new ideas, test hypotheses, and get useful feedback. Submission Guidelines Please submit your abstract/proposal (150-300 words) via EasyChair at https://easychair.org/cfp/CIM-PG-2019 We encourage the following types of contribution: * Presentations (up to 15 min) * Panels (3-4 proposals presented together with a unifying theme, up to 1 hrs) * Projects, such as websites, machine learning, visualisations, or other digital artefacts addressing the themes of the conference The conference organising committee will review all contributions to evaluate their fit with the themes and create a programme considering the space and time limitations. List of Topics Some questions that may be addressed can include, but are not limited to: * What does it mean to be with/in the digital? What are the implications of control, affect, interfaces, mobile devices, digital footprints, big data, quantification, surveillance and counterveillance on those with/in the digital? * How does participation happen with/in digital? Here we might consider the inter (or intra) actions, affects and effects of media, networks, mainstream news, ‘fake news,’ alt-right, feminism, the manosphere, and activism more broadly. * Who is with/in digital? What is the role of the human, the non-human, machine learning, algorithmic imaginaries, intersectionality, and what is the interplay (or relevance) of the subjects/consumers/producers therein? * Why participate with/in digital? Here we might think about research, activism, relationships, and consumption with/in the digital, but also engage with questions on “communicative capitalism,” political (dis)engagement, threats against activists, “doxing,” and so-called “revenge porn.” * How does power operate with/in the digital? How are digital technologies both enabling and at the same time conditioning participation with/in platforms? How are they mediated? Who mediates them? Do digital media technologies empower/emancipate? * Where does participation with/in the digital happen? Here we might look at exploring networks, social media, platforms, but also other spaces where the digital and the non-digital merge, such as gaming and virtual reality. * What kinds of research do we do with/in the digital? Here we might consider how researchers have approached the digital by doing research with/in it, mixing disciplines and methodologies or new ways to do research. Infrastructures and Inequalities: Media industries, digital cultures and politics Call for Papers ECREA Mid-Year Section Conference 21-22 October 2019, University of Helsinki, Finland Joint Conference of three ECREA Sections: Communication and Democracy; Digital Culture and Communication; and Media Industries and Cultural Production Abstract Deadline 1 June 2019 Confirmed keynote speakers: * Lisa Parks, Massachusetts Institute of Technology * Kaarina Nikunen, University of Tampere In a turn to ‘infrastructuralism’ (Peters 2015), media and communication scholars are increasingly attentive to the materialities and politics of the technological, organisational and cultural infrastructures that underpin media today. Platforms, data centres, software, but also new forms of organising cultural production and labour, shape the politics of digital cultures and transform the media industries. Digital and media infrastructures have become elemental to everyday life. They are significant in reproducing existing social and cultural inequalities, as well as creating new power struggles. As digital/media infrastructures unfold in everyday life, they bring challenges across multiple domains, from the foundations of social justice to the industrial structures underpinning our everyday interactions with media and communication systems. This conference aims to address the politics and inequalities that emerge, as technological and media industries adopt, dismantle and transform infrastructures to channel and process communication flows. Media infrastructures (broadly) operate under different and uneven conditions that configure media labour, media production, and the politics of communication and access (Starosielski and Parks 2015). This conference seeks to examine digital/media infrastructures and inequalities from an inter- and multi-disciplinary perspective, inviting papers to interrogate the significance of the ‘infrastructural turn’ in media and communication studies to our understanding of media industries, democracy and digital cultures. During this joint-ECREA section conference, we aim to engage with questions concerning inequalities and the infrastructures of digital culture, media industries and (digital) democracy through addressing topics such as (but not limited to): * The value, significance and relevance of infrastructure studies to media industry studies, the study of media and democracy, as well as digital culture * The industries and labour that operate and control specific technological media infrastructures, such as data centres, cloud computing, cable/satellite networks, content delivery networks * The politics and power dynamics of digital/media infrastructures * The significance of digital/media infrastructures in everyday life, especially related to the reproduction of social inequalities * The impact of digital/media infrastructures on culture, society, politics and democracy * The impact of digital/media infrastructures on media labour and cultural production * The organisational and cultural infrastructures of the media industries * Experiences and affective relationships that emerge in connection with media infrastructures * Forms of logistical media * Temporalities of media infrastructures * Emerging questions for the foundations of social justice in the digital media infrastructural turn Submission details Please submit a 300-word abstract for individual proposals. Panel proposals should include a 300-word panel rationale plus individual 200 word abstracts from a minimum of four speakers.
