Reminder: CfP The Authoritarian Threat to Europe's Liberal Democracies
by Schulze, Heidi 23 Apr '19

23 Apr '19

Dear colleagues, We are happy to share with you the invitation for submissions for a EUROLAB Authors’ Conference on “The Authoritarian Threat to Europe’s Liberal Democracies” to be held in Cologne/Germany on November 21-22, 2019. [Abstracts due on April 30, 2019] Please find the full call here: https://www.gesis.org/index.php?id=11260&L=1&no_cache=1 Summary: Recent years have seen a number of worrying developments across Europe: the rise of populist parties (Pappas 2016), increasing polarization and radicalization of attitudes and public discourse (Benkler et al. 2018), the advent of alternative media and “fake news” (Arif et al. 2018, Sanovich 2018), and a shift towards authoritarian values among citizens (Foa and Mounk 2016, 2017). While a number of contributions have discussed the causes of these developments, research on their consequences is still scarce. We therefore want to bring together papers that analyze whether and how these “authoritarian trends” affect the stability and functioning of European democracies. We invite contributions from political science and communication science that address one of more the following themes: - the functioning of social media as echo chambers, their instrumentalization by radical actors and their contribution to fostering a climate of hatred and polarization, - the effect of disinformation campaigns on citizens’ perceptions of democratic institutions - the dissemination of autocratic views and authoritarian values through digital media, - the effects of (increasing) polarization on societal conflicts and political participation, For the full Call for Papers, please visit the conference website at https://www.gesis.org/index.php?id=11260&L=1&no_cache=1. Abstracts are due on April 30, 2019. Selected papers will be published. We look forward to receiving your proposals! CFP on Youth Digital Participation
by Neta Kligler-Vilenchik 23 Apr '19

23 Apr '19

*Volume *8*, Issue *2 *Title*: Youth Digital Participation: Opportunities, Challenges, Contexts, and What’s at Stake *Editor(s): * Neta Kligler-Vilenchik (Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel) and Ioana Literat (Teachers College, Columbia University, USA) *Submission of Abstracts: *31 July 2019 *Submission of Full Papers: *10 January 2020 *Publication of the Issue: *May/June 2020 *Information: * In many ways, young people are trailblazers when it comes to digital participation. They are often the first to adopt new technologies and platforms, to experiment with modes of production and practices of sharing, and—due to the significant role that social relations play in their lives—often spend significant time and energy socializing online (Ito et al., 2009, 2019; Jenkins et al., 2016). Youth digital participation has been explored as an opportunity for areas including learning and professional development (e.g., Ito et al., 2019); self-expression and identity exploration (e.g., Renninger, 2015); social connection (e.g., Weinstein, 2018); as well as for civic and political participation and expression (e.g., Kligler-Vilenchik & Literat, 2018). At the same time, youth digital participation should not be uncritically celebrated: Rather, researchers should be cognizant of the nuances of youth participation and a focus on when, how, why and for what youth digital participation matters (Literat et al., 2018). For this issue, we invite theoretical and empirical (quantitative, qualitative or mixed-methods) papers that delve into youth digital participation from such a nuanced perspective, including papers which explore: - The potentials and opportunities for youth digital participation, including learning, self-expression, social connection, identity formation and more; - Youth civic/political expression and participation, including civic learning, cross-cutting exposure, and political socialization; - How young people’s participatory practices in digital spaces contribute (or not) to youth empowerment and agency; - Youth perspectives on their own digital participation; - Challenges and risks around youth participation; - The digital participation of marginalized youth; - Methodological perspectives and innovative approaches to studying youth digital participation; - Ethical issues related to the study of youth digital participation. These issues can be explored in relation to a variety of digital contexts, including mainstream social media platforms but also online affinity networks, smartphone applications, hybrid online/offline contexts, etc. Authors should be cognizant of strict ethical considerations regarding the use of data pertaining to minors, even when publicly available (see, e.g., Livingstone & Third, 2017; Zimmer & Kinder-Kurlanda, 2017). Three previous workshops on Health Recommender Systems (HRS) have incorporated diverse research fields and problems in which recommender systems can improve our awareness, understanding and behaviour regarding our own, and the general public's health. At the same time, these application areas bring new challenges into the recommender community. Recommendations that influence the health status of a patient need to be legally sound and, as such, today, they often involve a human in the loop to make sure the recommendations are appropriate. To make the recommender infallible, complex domain-specific user models need to be created, which creates privacy issues. While trust in a recommendation needs to be explicitly earned through, for example, transparency, explanations and empowerment, other systems might want to persuade users into taking beneficial actions that would not be willingly chosen otherwise. Multiple and diverse stakeholders in health systems produce further challenges. Taking the patient's perspective, simple interaction and safety against harmful recommendations might be the prioritized concern. For clinicians and experts, on the other hand, what matters is precise and accurate content. Healthcare and insurance providers and clinics all have other priorities. This workshop will deepen the discussions started at the three prior workshops and will work towards further development of the research topics in Health Recommender Systems. Our aim is to enhance the results of the last two workshops in the following areas: ** Elaborate discussion topics of the previous workshops on health promotion, health care as well as methods ** Strengthen the community of researchers working on Health in RecSys ** Attract representatives from e.g. health, psychology, medicine, nutrition, fitness ** Find cross-domain collaboration projects and funding targets ** Exchange and share infrastructure (datasets and tools) We invite submissions that may include the following topics but are not limited to: ** Algorithms and Recommendation Strategies ** Domain Knowledge Representation ** Regulations and Standards ** Medical Evaluation Techniques ** User Profiling ** Pervasive Systems ** Personalization ** Behavioral Interventions ** Persuasion/Nudging/Behavioral Change ** Gamification and Serious Games ** Adherence ** Empowerment ** Trust ** Explanations ** Patient Needs/ Satisfaction ** User Interaction Design ** Human/ Expert-in-the-Loop ** Privacy The goal of this workshop is to share and discuss research and projects that reach beyond classic recommender techniques and discuss health domain related challenges of recommender systems. Submissions: ============ We solicit research papers (up to 6 pages) and short position papers (2 pages), both in the ACM conference paper style. CFP: Social Networking and Communities @ HICSS 2020 (deadline June 15)
by Dan Suthers 23 Apr '19

23 Apr '19

CFP: HICSS Social Networking and Communities 53rd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) January 7-10, 2020, Grand Wailea, Maui, Hawaii PAPERS DUE: June 15, 2019 (see http://hicss.hawaii.edu/authors/) We call for papers that investigate social networks and communities supported and/or complemented by social media and other social technologies for work, learning, socializing, or economic or political processes. Papers may address theory, design, practices, use or evaluation of social technologies. 'Social networks and communities' refers broadly to social phenomena that may range from fully virtual to geographically based communities, and includes communnities of inquiry, interest, or practice; epistemic communities and networked advocacy; as well as other collective phenomena emerging within networks of individuals. We solicit papers that examine relationships between social phenomena and technologies, including how social phenomena are embedded or emerge within technological settings, how communities use technologies to further their goals, or how technologies otherwise influence or are appropriated by social phenomena and entities. Individual actors as the unit of analysis may also be included as long as communities and technologies are involved; e.g., how individuals relate to communities via technologies. We are particularly interested in papers that explore new models, theories and methods rather than re-applying and repeating established results. In order to leverage the interdisciplinary nature of HICSS and enable dialogue between social and technological disciplines, papers may be motivated by a broad range of theory-driven or data-driven perspectives and methods, including for example but not limited to social network analysis, content analysis, ethnographic investigations, and agent-based simulations. We particularly encourage papers that: • advance our understanding of social network growth, formation, structure and outcomes through social media; • explore how socio-technical affordances relate to social media use and outcomes; • interrogate entanglements of technology and culture in community settings; • examine how information and misinformation spread in social media and networks, and how algorithms, bots, and social media design affect this spread; • evaluate design of social media technologies and practices for effective community development and maintenance; and • develop theories, models and principles of social media design, use and outcomes. New Youth-Centered Digital Learning Report and Toolkit Released
by Jamieson Pond 22 Apr '19

22 Apr '19

Announcing the launch of “Reclaiming Digital Futures,” a free report and associated website for youth organizations to use as they integrate digital learning into their programming and practices. Reclaiming Digital Futures website: https://digitallearning.tools/AOIR The objective of the report and toolkit is to equip educators to leverage technology to foster learning that infuses digital tools and practices with deep focus on positive youth development, igniting the hearts and minds of youth and preparing them to be impactful 21st century citizens – a much larger task than simply teaching technology-related skills like coding or data analysis. The report and the associated website contain a cross-section of adoptable and adaptable resources to aid organizations and educators in developing quality programming that integrate technology and youth development. Rather than focusing on efforts to help youth become fluent and skilled in uses of technology simply for the sake of meeting predetermined standards, the organizations highlighted in the report provide practical avenues to support youth in transforming their communities and worlds. Creating the Report Reclaiming Digital Futures was developed through a collaborative process between the Susan Crown Exchange, researchers from the University of California, Irvine and New York University, and eight exemplar youth-serving organizations. Partner organizations: - AS220 (Providence, RI) - Beam Center (New York, NY) - Digital Harbor Foundation (Baltimore, MD) - DreamYard (New York, NY) - Free Spirit Media (Chicago, IL) - The Knowledge House (New York, NY) - West Michigan Center for Arts + Technology (Grand Rapids, MI) - YOUMedia (Chicago, IL) You can access the report and all resources of the toolkit at https://digitallearning.tools/AOIR Respectfully, Jamieson Pond, Communications Manager Connected Learning Lab University of California, Irvine

International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC) Call for Papers (17-20 Feb 2020, Dublin)
by Natalie Harrower 22 Apr '19

22 Apr '19

The 15th International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC) will take place on 17 - 20 February 2020 in Dublin, Ireland. I hope you can join us! Please find below information on the theme of the conference. Collective Curation: the many hands that make data work It takes a community to raise a child, so the proverb goes, and the same applies to digital content. Many stakeholders play a role in ensuring digital objects are properly created, managed and shared. Entire research communities need to agree on standards for data sharing, for example, and actions taken by content creators and curators have a huge impact on the ability for others to find, evaluate, understand and reuse objects. Decisions can empower or marginalise communities, and records can hold great power to help restore identity, promote truth and support reconciliation. With modern technology, anyone can be a content creator and provider with a potentially worldwide audience. The original intention of the internet as trusted sites of authority exchanging data of known quality has been overtaken by the flood of content on the world wide web. In this landscape, how do we evaluate and exchange information and ensure meaningful knowledge production? How do we harness the freedom and inclusiveness of the Web while enabling effective curation? How do we ensure that content is preserved for long-term accessibility? The 15th International Digital Curation Conference takes place in Dublin in collaboration with the Digital Repository of Ireland. DRI is a certified trusted digital repository for Ireland’s social and cultural data, and is widely engaged in a host of research projects spanning digital cultural heritage, research data management, Open Science policy and training, data preservation in the humanities and social sciences, and best practices in digital archiving and open repository architecture. DRI has organised and hosted dozens of conferences large and small including its biannual conference, DPASSH (Digital Preservation in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities), and the Research Data Alliance plenary. Papers are invited to address one or more of the themes below Social, political and cultural implications of digital curation * Who controls the past, controls the future – empowering community ownership of collections and the role of records to restore justice following cultural trauma * Participatory archiving, citizen science and radical collaboration * The people behind the data – acknowledging their role, influence and bias * Climate change and digital curation – what might our work look like in 20-50 years? * Partner and prosper – how content creators and curators should come together * Community-owned and open source solutions – a way for the education sector to keep control of the scholarly commons and its intellectual output? Trust: assessing content and containers * Metrics and methods to assess, validate and communicate data quality within and across communities of use * Frameworks to certify services as trustworthy and robust * Persistence: all kinds of identifiers and their role in ensuring trust * Disruptive technologies and their role in automated verification and authentication * All that glitters is not gold – how to make and communicate appropriate selection decisions and innovative approaches to appraisal? * Rethinking repositories into active research spaces and collaborative partners * In the era of fake news, how do we trust digital content and its representations in media? Data stewardship * Data stewards, data agents, data champions and institutional units – shaping, positioning and recognising new roles * Engaging and supporting researchers: examples of co-designing solutions and interdisciplinarity * Embedding data stewardship in research ecosystems – workflows, accountability and recognition * Research assessment – crediting involvement in the creation, curation and sharing of data * Defining competencies, curricula and educational programmes to address skills gaps – for researchers, data producers, data stewards, research data management librarians and others * Networking and fora for information exchange and skills sharing across institutions * Promoting standardisation to achieve more harmonized practices * Empowering communities to define data standards and sharing agreements Preservation planning * Lessons learned from the review, evaluation and re-validation of curated content * Curation workflows: linkages between digital triage, preservation actions and archiving * Managing de-accession – when does content lose its value? * National and global approaches to addressing digital preservation challenges * Preservation at scale: how can we collaborate and partner on preservation? * Preservation challenges in the humanities, social sciences and cultural heritage * Long term preservation failures – lessons learnt * Open source technologies and open standards for long term preservation Submissions Submission types are likely to include full, peer-reviewed papers as well as shorter forms with various post-submission review and publication tracks, as well as posters on the above themes. The submission deadline for papers will be end of 31st of July; that for posters will be end of September. We also welcome workshop submissions on any relevant topic. Workshop submission requirements, deadlines and review processes are separate from those for other types of content. More details on the mix of submission types and the requirements for each track will be released by the 30th of April. LIVE STREAM This Friday, 12pm EDT: "Apparatuses of recognition: Google, Project Maven, and targeted killing" with Lucy Suchman
by Christian Sandvig 19 Apr '19

19 Apr '19

Hello AoIR: We are launching a new research center soon called ESC: The Center for Ethics, Society, and Computing. We are in a "soft opening" phase right now and this Friday we will do our first ESC experiment with a more external-facing event. ESC will be live-streaming Lucy Suchman's talk on image recognition technology and drone warfare. Prof. Suchman will discuss the controversial Pentagon program that led to protests and resignations at Google. Her bio below is too modest: Prof. Suchman is very well-known as an expert on human-computer interaction, is famous for her early work at Xerox PARC, and was recently president of 4S. I wanted to flag this for your attention in case you are interested in watching. Of course you are also invited to forward this announcement as appropriate. FOR REMOTE PARTICIPANTS VIDEO FROM THIS TALK WILL BE STREAMED LIVE For video, during the event visit this URL: http://umsi.info/suchman ABSTRACT In June of 2018, following a campaign initiated by activist employees within the company, Google announced its intention not to renew a US Defense Department contract for Project Maven, an initiative to automate the identification of military targets based on drone video footage. Defendants of the program argued that that it would increase the efficiency and effectiveness of US drone operations, not least by enabling more accurate recognition of those who are the program’s legitimate targets and, by implication, sparing the lives of noncombatants. But this promise begs a more fundamental question: What relations of reciprocal familiarity does recognition presuppose? And in the absence of those relations, what schemas of categorization inform our readings of the Other? The focus of a growing body of scholarship, this question haunts not only US military operations but an expanding array of technologies of social sorting. Understood as apparatuses of recognition (Barad 2007: 171), Project Maven and the US program of targeted killing are implicated in perpetuating the very architectures of enmity that they take as their necessitating conditions. I close with some thoughts on how we might interrupt the workings of these apparatuses, in the service of wider movements for social justice. SPEAKER BIO Lucy Suchman is Professor of Anthropology of Science and Technology at Lancaster University in the UK. Her research interests within the field of feminist science and technology studies are focused on technological imaginaries and material practices of technology design, particularly developments at the interface of bodies and machines. Dr. Suchman’s current research extends her longstanding critical engagement with the field of human-computer interaction to contemporary warfighting, including the figurations that inform immersive simulations, and problems of “situational awareness” in remotely-controlled weapon systems. Dr. Suchman is concerned with the question of whose bodies are incorporated into these systems, how and with what consequences for social justice and the possibility for a less violent world. -- This talk and the speaker series listed below are part of the "soft opening" of ESC: The Center for Ethics, Society, and Computing. http://esc.umich.edu/ This event is generously supported by the School of Information; the Center for Political Studies at the Institute for Social Research; and the Department of Communication Studies in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan.
