2nd CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
by Arda Akdemir 18 Apr '19

18 Apr '19

Apologies for cross-posting & please share with anybody who may be interested in this call. *** CALL FOR PARTICIPATION *** CLEF ProtestNews 2019 Extracting Protests from News Using Automated Methods https://emw.ku.edu.tr/clef-protestnews-2019/ ProtestNews 2019 is a lab that is being organized as part of the Conference and Labs of the Evaluation Forum 2019 (CLEF). The lab aims at extracting protest event information from news articles across multiple countries using machine learning (ML) and generalizable natural language processing (NLP). This is a sub-task of our ERC-funded research, which aims to generate a comparative protest databases for China, India, South Africa, Mexico and Brazil (emw.ku.edu.tr). The lab aims at facilitating research in line of improving generalizability of natural language processing systems. Our objective is to develop text classification and information extraction tools on one country and test them on data from different countries. The results of our task will appear in the working notes proceedings, published by CEUR Workshop Proceedings (CEUR-WS.org) and are presented in the CLEF 2019. Time & Place: 09-12 September 2019, Lugano - Switzerland Competition is organized using Codalab. Competition website : https://competitions.codalab.org/competitions/22349 We offer three subtasks and target research areas involve but not limited to: - Information Retrieval - Natural Language Processing - Machine Learning, Deep Learning - Big Data, Data Mining with a focus on generalizability. Tasks: We split the ProtestNews task in three subtasks: 1) Task 1: News article classification as protest vs. non-protest is a binary classification task that aims at discriminating between protest event related news articles and any other news article. Task 1 forms the basis of the subsequent tasks and is the first step towards extracting protest event related information from news articles. 2) Task 2: Event sentence detection aims at determining event sentences that contain an event trigger or a mention of it. Event triggers refer to the textual unit that makes a sentence to be annotated as an event sentence and an event mention is any kind of mention to that event trigger. For example; "In the attack that happened yesterday 20 people were injured." and "Today, we received news that 2 people died in the hospital after the incident." would be positive examples. 3) Task 3: Event information extraction is an event information extraction task that targets mainly events. Information such as participants, time and place of the event. So this task can be considered as a challenging Named Entity Recognition task where the participants are expected to detect not only the named entities found in the text but also be able to detect which ones are related to event. F1 measure will be used to evaluate Task 3. Subtasks two and three will be based on news articles that are labelled as protest or not for subtask 1. Participants can choose to participate in one or more of these subtasks independent of each other. The data from India will be used for training and testing. Evaluations will be done using a combination of the datasets from India and China. Participation: In order to participate go to the link and register ( http://clef2019-labs-registration.dei.unipd.it/) After signing and submitting the form regarding the use of the competition data you have to register to our competition through Codalab ( http://competitions.codalab.org/competitions/22349 ). Reminder: "Information Science Trends: Search Engines and Information Retrieval", Hamburg, 26 April 2019
by Dirk Lewandowski 18 Apr '19

18 Apr '19

We still have a few places available for ASIST’s Hamburg event: "Information Science Trends: Search Engines and Information Retrieval", Hamburg, 26 April 2019 Join us for a day of exciting talks and discussions on search engines and information retrieval! (Free) registration is now open for the ASIS&T European Chapter event “Information Science Trends: Search Engines and Information Retrieval” in Hamburg, Germany, on Friday, 26 April 2019. Please register at https://www.eventbrite.de/e/information-science-trends-search-engines-and-i… The event will take place at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences Kunst- und Mediencampus Hamburg Finkenau 35 22081 Hamburg Germany Program: 9:30 AM Registration 10:00 AM Welcome and opening remarks 10:15 AM Keynote Prof. Olof Sundin, Lund University, Sweden Invisible Search in Everyday Life How can we understand search and search engines in everyday life? In his lecture Sundin will introduce and discuss some key concepts from his new book Invisible Search and Online Search Engines: The Ubiquity of Search in Everyday Life (2019, with Jutta Haider); specifically he will elucidate the notions friction of relevance and infrastructural meaning-making. The lecture broadens a traditional understanding of searching in information science by locating searching squarely in society and as entwined with the conditions of everyday life. 11:30 AM Dirk Lewandowski, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany A call for fair search engines Search engines like Google have a massive influence on what information users get to see, and on what search results users select. It has been often lamented that search engines are biased. I, however, argue that we have only scratched the surface because search engine bias is a multifaceted concept and the discussion usually solely focuses on some aspects. Further to giving an overview of the topic, I will show how search engine providers (and regulators) can take steps towards making search fair. Whereas a bias-free search engine is impossible, a fair search is. Here, I will not only focus on the big web search engines but also on how developers and product owners can make their search systems fair. 12:30 PM Lunch 1:30 PM Emmy Le, Otto GmbH & Co. KG, Hamburg, Germany Product Search at otto.de OTTO is one of the largest full-range online retailer in Germany with over 2.9 million products. Thus the internal on-site product search with more than 1 million search queries per day is the most critical feature to make relevant products and information easy to find. Achieving the right balance between business, measuring search quality and user needs can be quite challenging when building an ecommerce search engine. How we at OTTO respond to these challenges will be part of this talk. 02:15 PM Short presentations Astrid Mager, Institute of Technology Assessment, Wien, Austria Alternative search engines as drivers for social change? Ingo Knuth, Janina Masuhr, Hochschule für Medien, Kommunikation und Wirtschaft, Berlin, Germany Decision Drivers for Search Engine Usage – The Role of the Lock-in Effects Christiane Behnert, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany Influences on the relevance judgment process in academic search systems More short presentations tba. 04:00 PM Coffee Break 4:30 PM ASIS&T presentation: ASIS&T, the European Chapter, the European Student Chapter 04:45 PM Tom Alby, Euler Hermes, Hamburg, Germany Data Science in Search Engine Development Machine Learning has been an essential part of large-scale search engine development even before the term "data science" was coined. With the increasing interest in data science and artificial intelligence, the impact of self-learning algorithms on search engine development, relevance and transparency has to be reviewed. In addition, what is the chance for new search engines to succeed without the vast amount of data that has already been collected? 05:45 PM Closing remarks Prof. Dr. Dirk Lewandowski T +49 40 428 75 36 21 Skype: dirk.lewandowski Twitter: @Dirk_Lew HAMBURG UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES Faculty Design, Media and Information Department of Information Finkenau 35 / 22081 Hamburg / Germany http://www.searchstudies.org/dirk Suchmaschinen verstehen, 2. AoIR Executive candidates election fora
by Axel Bruns 18 Apr '19

18 Apr '19

Dear AoIRists, This is a reminder that the candidates standing for the AoIR Executive in our upcoming elections are currently making themselves available for your questions and discussion over on the AoIR site. We've already seen some healthy conversations about the future of AoIR, and it would be wonderful if you could visit and join in. We have now also solved the problem with some of the participants' names being shown as 'Anonymous', which was caused by an overzealous privacy setting - all statements are now attributed to the participants. To see the debate, go to http://members.aoir.org/ and click on Elections - from there, you can find the candidates' election statements and discussion fora. Please remember that to participate in the election you must be a current member of the Association - so this might be a good time to check your membership status and (if necessary) renew your membership. Once again, my sincere thanks and best wishes to everybody standing for election to the AoIR Executive: we are an entirely volunteer-run organisation, and AoIR could not continue without your willingness to serve this community. Call for Submissions Workshop on Designing Feminist Action - ACM DIS2019 Hi all! We are organizing a workshop at the upcoming Designing Interactive Systems (DIS2019) conference (scheduled from June 23rd to 28th) in San Diego. The workshop is called Designing Feminist Action: At the Intersection of Culture and Method. Please read a short description below. More details can be found on the website - https://cultureandmethoddis2019.wordpress.com/ <https://cultureandmethoddis2019.wordpress.com/>. This one-day workshop will explore the use of design research and computing practice in resisting and reifying inequalities. We invite participants to share how we do, and how we might, bring our feminist ideals to bear upon the kinds of work that we perform (methods) and upon the forms of interaction that we participate in (culture). This workshop centers on three driving orientations of feminist design research: How do we translate feminist perspectives from scholarly discourse into practical action? How do we revise existing methods to align with our feminist values and beliefs? How do we intervene in the prevailing culture to identify and change attitudes, behaviors, and practices that work against equity and inclusiveness? We invite researchers/scholars, community members, artists, and others interested in participating to submit a brief position paper, design provocation, case study (approximately 500 words in a format of your choosing), or a video contribution (max. 5 minutes) that describes a situation in which you have either attempted OR would like to attempt the translation of feminist perspectives from scholarly discourse into some form of action. For instance, your paper could: Consider actual or imagined revision to existing research or pedagogical methods Reflect on actual or imagined intervention in prevailing cultures Important dates to note for this workshop: - April 22: Proposal Acceptance Deadline June 24th: Workshop at ACM DIS 2019 (San Diego) Submissions or questions/queries can be sent to cultureandmethoddis2019(a)gmail.com <https://cultureandmethoddis2019.wordpress.com/call-for-participation/submit…> We look forward to your proposals and hope for a wide participation of scholars, researchers and practitioners committed to feminist action and design. Conference and Special Issue CfP: Communication Rights in the Digital Age
by Minna Aslama 17 Apr '19

17 Apr '19

Communication Rights in the Digital Age International Conference organized by the Helsinki Media Policy Research Group, the University of Helsinki, the ECREA Communication Law and Policy Section and the Euromedia Research Group, and supported by the IAMCR Communication Policy & Technology Section. 24–25 October 2019, Helsinki, Finland Conference presenters will be invited to submit to a special issue of the Journal of Information Policy, (www.jip-online.org) Abstract submission deadline: 15 May 2019. The rights-based perspective on ethical and political questions presented by the new digital media has recently regained attention in academic and political debates. Due to the importance of communication rights to societies and democracy, it is imperative to understand how those rights are defined, manifested, regulated, and monitored today. The realization of communication rights is further shaped by economic, political and socio-cultural situations. What do we know about these contexts? How can we accumulate a better conceptual and empirical understanding of communication rights? This conference will address the interplay of national and global, universal and specific, characteristics of communication rights. We are interested in analyses of different definitions of communication rights; of policy and other actors defining these rights in national and international contexts; and of current core issues or cases that pertain to communication rights. We welcome conceptual and theoretical interventions as well as empirical approaches. Presenters at the conference will be invited to submit their completed papers for review by the Journal of Information Policy (www.jip-online.org) Now in its 9th year, the JIP brings contemporary scholarly research and analysis of significant information policy issues to the attention of policymakers in a timely fashion via an online format. The JIP is a publication of the Institute for Information Policy at the Pennsylvania State University. The JIP is an open-access journal accessible on the JSTOR platform. Published works in the JIP are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution, which means that all content is freely available immediately upon publication without charge to the user or his/her institution. Please see the detailed call for papers: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/conferences/communication-rights-in-the-digital-… Keynote speaker: Philip M. Napoli, James R.
