Final Call: Proposals Due Monday 4/15 for the Mapping (In)Justice Symposium
by Gregory Donovan 11 Apr '19

11 Apr '19

FINAL CALL FOR PROPOSALS Mapping (In)Justice: Digital Theory + Praxis for Critical Scholarship November 7-8, 2019 at Fordham University (New York, NY) PROPOSALS DUE: Monday, April 15th https://mappinginjustice.org <https://mappinginjustice.org/> ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM This symposium creates space for critically considering digital mapping as both a method and an object of analysis. Specifically, we invite submissions that analyze or utilize spatial media so as to rethink and re-present distributions of capital, power, and privilege in historical, contemporary, and speculative contexts. We center “mapping” as an organizing theme for understanding and engaging social (in)justice because of its expanding role in literally and metaphorically arranging contemporary life. The everyday adoption of new spatial media—such as web-based mapping platforms, geosocial applications, and locative data—increasingly orient how society understands the past, experiences the present, and plans for the future. To map social justice and injustice is to consider how spatial media can help draw together dichotomies such as medium/method, art/science, and ontology/epistemology so as to trace, represent, and rework matters of inequity. This symposium thus encourages submissions that explore structural inequities in or through spatial media, especially as they relate to matters of difference—such as race, gender, class, ethnicity, ability, sexuality, and religion. We also encourage submissions that utilize digital mapping to spatially represent historically marginalized perspectives through empirical, textual, archival, participatory, and/or pedagogical methods. We welcome 250 word proposals for Short Papers and Gallery Projects that critically address matters of social (in)justice in historical, contemporary or speculative contexts in relation to—but not limited to—the following: - mapping in digital humanities and computational social sciences - critical and/or feminist GIS - participatory and collaborative mapping - digital geography, neogeography, and the geoweb - spatial learning and digital pedagogy - mapping public histories - aesthetics and representation in digital mapping - mapping of cultural texts and artifacts - mapping media ecologies and augmented realities - smart urbanism and spatial data infrastructures Submitted proposals will be reviewed by the Symposium Committee. 2,000 word papers will be requested prior to the symposium for accepted Short Paper proposals. Panels and keynotes will be livestreamed and the symposium proceedings will be archived in Fordham University’s Institutional Repository. A selection of papers from the symposium proceedings will be invited for inclusion in an edited volume or journal issue. CfP: 4th Interdisciplinary Summer school on Privacy (ISP 2019) - Dark Patterns
by Jo PIERSON 11 Apr '19

11 Apr '19

=========================================================================== Call for Participation 4th Interdisciplinary Summer school on Privacy (ISP 2019) September 1-6, 2019, Berg en Dal / Nijmegen (The Netherlands) Theme: Dark Patterns https://isp.cs.ru.nl ============================================================================ We invite doctoral researchers working on privacy, data protection, security, surveillance and ethics to participate in the fourth Interdisciplinary Summer school on Privacy (ISP 2019) to be held from September 1 - 6, 2019 in Berg en Dal (The Netherlands), close to Radboud University (Nijmegen). # Teachers Confirmed teachers so far (more names to be added) - Gloria Gonzalez Fuster (VUB, Belgium) - (Name to be confirmed) (EDPS, Belgium) - Narseo Vallina Rodriguez (IMDEA, Spain) - Colin Gray (Purdue University, USA) - Michael Dieter (Warwick U.) - Nora A. Draper (University of New Hampshire) # Background of the summerschool The interdisciplinary summerschool on privacy (ISP) provides an intensive one week academic post-graduate programme teaching privacy from a technical, legal and social perspective. The goal of the summerschool is to provide students with a solid background in the theory of privacy construction, modelling and protection from these three different perspectives. It also aims to help them to establish a first international network with peers and senior academics across these disparate disciplines. Participants of the summerschool are awarded two ECTS (study credits) and receive a certificate of attendance issued by the Radboud University attesting this. For more information [click here](https://isp.cs.ru.nl) # Theme: Dark Patterns [According to Gray et al.](http://colingray.me/wp-content/uploads/2018_Grayetal_CHI_DarkPatternsUXDesign.pdf) dark patterns started as a practitioner led initiative uncovering features of interface design crafted to trick users into doing things they may not want to do, but which benefit the business in question. More formally, the authors define it as instances in which designers use their knowledge of human behavior (e.g., psychology), and the desires of end users to implement deceptive functionality that is not in the user's best interest. At this summer school, we want to focus on dark patterns that impact users' privacy or their ability to practice their data protection rights. Dark patterns raise crucial questions regarding compliance with European data protection legislation and ethical technology deployment. In January 2019 the French Data Protection Authority (CNIL) imposed a fine of 50 million Euros on Google "in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), for lack of transparency, inadequate information and lack of valid consent regarding the ads personalization", according to the CNIL. This sky-high fine illustrates the importance paid by regulators to combating dark patterns. Also consumer organisations, like the [Norwegian Consumer Council](https://www.forbrukerradet.no/undersokelse/no-undersokelsekategori/deceived-by-design), have reported on how users are ‘deceived by design’ by tech companies, discouraging people to exercise their rights to privacy. In this summerschool we also propose to look beyond the interface, and ask, where do dark patterns emerge in the production of internet-based services, in the organizing of software and hardware infrastructures, in the elaboration and interpretation of laws, in the push for certain economic models, and conceptions of data, systems, users, and the social. How do we come to recognize, uncover, resist and prevent dark patterns in these different socio-technical contexts? Dark patterns as a concept is a not easy to pin down, since manipulation of environment and behavior can be seen as a part of any design intervention. Yet, the rise of the concept is indicative that there are a considerable set of practices that are identified under the label of dark patterns. In this context, at the summer school, we will discuss study dark matters and ask whether intentions matter, or outcomes can also serve as a way to identify whether a practice may qualify as a dark pattern in the context of privacy and data protection. Being able to think collectively about this hard question will provide us with tools, methods and arguments to address the continuum between poor design or decisions, lack of resources, incompetence, recklessness, optimization, externalization of costs, and intentional patterns that lead to manipulation, deception or unwarranted levels of persuasion. We will explore together where we can productively draw the line when it comes to patterns that harm vs. patterns that just do, and how technical, social, ethical, legal and economic practices may be reimagined to address these practices. # Format The summer school is interdisciplinary, involving the following disciplines: computer science, law and social sciences / media and communication studies. The school lasts one week, with nine scheduled lectures (five morning lectures and four afternoon lectures) of two hours each. These nine lectures are equally distributed over the three disciplines, with top-notch lectures from each of the disciplines. The lectures will lay the grounds for an interdisciplinary conversation among students and lecturers coming from a variety of backgrounds. The remaining time is used for hands on working group sessions to study practical cases. The cases will be offered by businesses, governments, government related institutions (like DPAs) and civil society/NGOs. Groups of six students, ideally two from each discipline, are formed to tackle the cases and report back on their results in a plenary session. The school is held in a location that encourages dialogue and social interactions between both the staff and the students, both during lectures and in the evening. Staff (i.e. lecturers) are encouraged to stay at the summer school for the whole length of the school. The summer school is foremost aimed at PhD students from computer science, law and social sciences. # Practical Information The summer school is held at [Hotel Erica](http://www.hotelerica.nl), Berg en Dal, The Netherlands. The hotel is well equipped and ideally situated in the woods close to Nijmegen, and easily reached by bus from Nijmegen train station. Nijmegen has direct train connections with Schiphol, the Dutch national airport. ## Registration Visit the following web page to register: https://isp.cs.ru.nl/registration.php We offer the following options. - Single room: € 1085 (late: € 1185) - Shared room: € 785 (late: € 885) - No room (lunch/diner/school only): € 590 (late: € 690) (for local people who do not need accommodation) Payment by credit card accepted. Global Media & Policy Seminar Series from University of Oxford - livestream TOMORROW on community internet
by Kira Allmann 10 Apr '19

10 Apr '19

Hi all - The Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy (PCMLP) at the University of Oxford is launching a live-streamed global seminar series -- starting with a great talk tomorrow at 5 PM (BST) on a community-owned and -operated internet network in northwest England that I've been working with during my postdoc. Tune in if you're interested! (More info about the talk and the seminar series below.) https://www.youtube.com/user/PCMLPOXFORD *** *Global Media & Policy Seminar Series: Chris Conder (B4RN - Broadband for the Rural North) <https://www.law.ox.ac.uk/events/global-media-policy-seminar-series-chris-co…>* Chris Conder co-founded Broadband for the Rural North (B4RN), a rural, community-owned, co-operative that delivers affordable 1Gbps symmetric broadband to rural farms in Lancashire, UK. Rural regions in countries around the world suffer from lack of adequate broadband infrastructure. Even where access is available, ability to pay is often much lower in those regions. B4RN empowers communities to develop their own broadband solutions that are faster and cheaper than commercial internet service providers, and the B4RN model has become an inspiration for both not-for-profit and commercial broadband solutions for closing the digital divide in the UK and worldwide. In this livestreamed seminar, Chris will share B4RN's story - how this thriving community network went from an ambitious idea, driven by a desire and demand for connectivity, to a world-class community-run and community-enhancing internet provider, all while keeping the community at its core. Today, B4RN connects over 5000 homes in rural Lancashire. For more information on B4RN: https://b4rn.org.uk To join the seminar, tune into YouTube Live (PCMLP Oxford) at 17:00 BST. Send us your questions/comments on YouTube or using #GlobalMediaQs on Twitter. *About the PCMLP Global Media & Policy Seminar Series* *The Global Media & Policy Seminar Series is an online seminar series jointly organised between the University of Oxford’s Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy (at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies) and the University of Johannesburg’s School of Communication. The series fosters an international dialogue about pressing issues affecting new media and human rights, particularly at the margins. The speakers in this series tackle issues related to technology and policy across different contexts, including (among others) algorithmic bias and inequalities; misinformation and elections; social media and migration; extreme speech online; community-driven internet access solutions; autonomous and feminist infrastructure; and privacy. This innovative global seminar series uses the power of technology to bridge the geographic and epistemic distance between the global north and the global south – to bring together critical perspectives on new media in context and facilitate a diverse dialogue on the most important questions of human rights, internet governance and our technologically mediated lives.*

*** Apologies for cross-posting! *** ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- displaced-hci.info<https://displaced-hci.info> 2019.comtech.community/workshopprogram<https://2019.comtech.community/workshopprogram.html> Dear all, we are excited to invite you to submit an abstract to our upcoming workshop on the issue of Technologies & Borders<http://displaced-hci.info/> taking place at Communities & Technologies conference<http://displaced-hci.info/> in Vienna, Austria on June 3 -7. In a time of increased (forced) migration, the borders of many countries are not only experienced physically. We are witnessing new ways in which borders are being created, re-created and evolved. In this workshop we are concerned about borders mediated by digital technologies. We aim to bring together researchers and local organisations working with migrants and refugees to investigate the interplay between borders and technology. We aim to explore how borders are defined within the digital age, how they are experienced, and discuss how technology is used to enforce, challenge and overcome borders. Call for Participation Within the growing contexts of migration, technology is playing a critical role in enforcing, navigating and challenging geographical borders as well borders formed through technologies themselves. This one-day workshop aims to facilitate discussions on the interplay between borders and technologies as well as discuss how HCI research can further our understanding of this field. We invite researchers and practitioners interested in participating to submit 2-4 pages long papers (in an appropriate format). Submissions should explore and reflect on a specific case where borders were enforced, challenged or overcome through the use of digital technologies. Cases and stories can be based on personal experiences and/or experiences of witnessing others encounters with borders, participant statements, or even media. Submissions should be sent to displacedhci(a)tutanota.com<mailto:displacedhci@tutanota.com> in .pdf format. Position papers will be reviewed based on relevance to the workshop. feminist & care ethics in internet research?
by Charles M. Ess 09 Apr '19

09 Apr '19

Hi all, As some of you know, this week aline shakti franzke is a guest researcher with us here in Oslo, with a primary focus on pushing forward our work on the Internet Research Ethics 3.0 documents. Aline is working specifically on a module on feminist ethics and care ethics as ethical frameworks and their application in IRE. While I have a small bibliography of examples going back to the early 2000s, I'm wondering if / hoping that I can take advantage of the AoIR community and simply ask: can you forward bibliographic information regarding articles, chapters, etc. that include explicitly feminist and/ or care ethics approaches in application to specific ethical challenges and difficulties in IRE? In the spirit of recent threads, it would likely be quite interesting and beneficent to simply reply to the list with your suggestions. The resulting bibliography will be included as a resource in the IRE 3.0 documents; we will happily acknowledge individuals for your suggestions and contributions. Many thanks in advance for any contributions and suggestions you may be able to offer. best regards, - charles ess -- Professor in Media Studies Department of Media and Communication University of Oslo <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/people/aca/charlees/index.html> Postboks 1093 Blindern 0317 Oslo, Norway c.m.ess(a)media.uio.no
