03 Apr '19

Dear colleagues, Join us for a day of exciting talks and discussions on search engines and information retrieval! (Free) registration is now open for the ASIS&T European Chapter event “Information Science Trends: Search Engines and Information Retrieval” in Hamburg, Germany, on Friday, 26 April 2019. Please register at https://www.eventbrite.de/e/information-science-trends-search-engines-and-i… The event will take place at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences Kunst- und Mediencampus Hamburg Finkenau 35 22081 Hamburg Germany Program: 9:30 AM Registration 10:00 AM Welcome and opening remarks 10:15 AM Keynote Prof. Olof Sundin, Lund University, Sweden Invisible Search in Everyday Life How can we understand search and search engines in everyday life? In his lecture Sundin will introduce and discuss some key concepts from his new book Invisible Search and Online Search Engines: The Ubiquity of Search in Everyday Life (2019, with Jutta Haider); specifically he will elucidate the notions friction of relevance and infrastructural meaning-making. The lecture broadens a traditional understanding of searching in information science by locating searching squarely in society and as entwined with the conditions of everyday life. 11:30 AM Dirk Lewandowski, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany A call for fair search engines Search engines like Google have a massive influence on what information users get to see, and on what search results users select. It has been often lamented that search engines are biased. I, however, argue that we have only scratched the surface because search engine bias is a multifaceted concept and the discussion usually solely focuses on some aspects. Further to giving an overview of the topic, I will show how search engine providers (and regulators) can take steps towards making search fair. Whereas a bias-free search engine is impossible, a fair search is. Here, I will not only focus on the big web search engines but also on how developers and product owners can make their search systems fair. 12:30 PM Lunch 1:30 PM Emmy Le, Otto GmbH & Co. KG, Hamburg, Germany Product Search at otto.de OTTO is one of the largest full-range online retailer in Germany with over 2.9 million products. Thus the internal on-site product search with more than 1 million search queries per day is the most critical feature to make relevant products and information easy to find. Achieving the right balance between business, measuring search quality and user needs can be quite challenging when building an ecommerce search engine. How we at OTTO respond to these challenges will be part of this talk. 02:15 PM Short presentations Astrid Mager, Institute of Technology Assessment, Wien, Austria Alternative search engines as drivers for social change? Ingo Knuth, Janina Masuhr, Hochschule für Medien, Kommunikation und Wirtschaft, Berlin, Germany Decision Drivers for Search Engine Usage – The Role of the Lock-in Effects Christiane Behnert, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany Influences on the relevance judgment process in academic search systems More short presentations tba. 04:00 PM Coffee Break 4:30 PM ASIS&T presentation: ASIS&T, the European Chapter, the European Student Chapter 04:45 PM Tom Alby, Euler Hermes, Hamburg, Germany Data Science in Search Engine Development Machine Learning has been an essential part of large-scale search engine development even before the term "data science" was coined. With the increasing interest in data science and artificial intelligence, the impact of self-learning algorithms on search engine development, relevance and transparency has to be reviewed. In addition, what is the chance for new search engines to succeed without the vast amount of data that has already been collected? 05:45 PM Closing remarks Kind regards, Dirk Lewandowski Prof. Dr. Dirk Lewandowski T +49 40 428 75 36 21 Skype: dirk.lewandowski Twitter: @Dirk_Lew HAMBURG UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES Faculty Design, Media and Information Department of Information Finkenau 35 / 22081 Hamburg / Germany http://www.searchstudies.org/dirk Suchmaschinen verstehen, 2. [http://img1.wsimg.com/isteam/stock/WbDjldj]<https://africanadhi.com/> Africana DHi 2019<https://africanadhi.com/> Digital Humanities in Black africanadhi.com AFRICANA DHi Call for Applications DO YOU HAVE AN IDEA, A DIGITAL PROJECT, OR JUST WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT DIGITAL TOOLS FOR DOING AFRICANA STUDIES WORK? Africana DHi is a three week online workshop to be held from May 28- June 11, 2019 in association with the Center for Digital Humanities at the University of Arizona. During the DHi, which is supported by a National Endowment for the Humanities Institutes in Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities grant and the CUNY Graduate Center Digital Humanities Research Initiative, participants will explore interdisciplinary, digital humanities research and teaching with DH scholars, develop core computational research skills through online workshops, and begin developing their own digital humanities projects. When participants complete the workshop they will become part of a growing network of distributed digital humanities research institutes, and their reflections will inform the publication of the Spring 2020 Special Issue of Fire!!!, the peer-reviewed digital journal for the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). Short courses—or “bootcamps”—that last anywhere from one day to two months are an increasingly popular way to offer intensive training in digital tools and skills over a short period of time; however, these courses are resource-intensive to run, require travel and financial support, and are rarely focused on Africana-centered approaches to the digital humanities. Africana DHi joins the growing list of conferences and summer bootcamps designed specifically for teaching methods and digital tools for the study of African Diaspora histories, cultures, and people. We seek participants who are post-secondary researchers, professors, independent scholars, library or museum professionals. Applications that propose a specific project will receive first consideration. The workshop will include lessons and materials available on this website, but we will also rely upon each other to share information, skills and knowledge. Applying Applications must be received by April 26, 2019. Applicants will be informed of their acceptance by May 6, 2019. CfP Workshop on Engineering Accountable Information Systems Stockholm University Stockholm, Sweden, June 10-11, 2019
by Ben Wagner 02 Apr '19

02 Apr '19

Dear all, we currently have a call for papers on Accountable Systems for a workshop at ECIS 2019 that might be interesting for many people on this list: https://easychair.org/cfp/ECIS2019-EAIS <https://easychair.org/cfp/ECIS2019-EAIS> Deadline for submissions is 15 March 2019. If you have any questions about it please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Best, Ben -- Dr. Ben Wagner Assistant Professor Institute for Information Systems and Society Vienna University of Economics and Business Director, Privacy & Sustainable Computing Lab Email: ben.wagner(a)wu.ac.at | Tel: +43-1-31336-6061 Web: https://www.privacylab.at/ | Twitter: @benwagne_r ECIS 2019 Workshop: Engineering Accountable Information Systems The function of information systems in society is increasingly in focus of information systems research. One outstanding challenge is how to build information systems which promote accountability, as part of a wider debate on fairness, accountability, and transparency principles (e.g., ACM FAT*). This need for accountability must be reflected on all layers of systems engineering, ranging from process analysis to concrete technical components and primitives employed during implementation. Based on our existing research we believe that three specific areas of information systems research are most relevant in this context: user cognition and human behaviour in relation to the design of interfaces; automated decision-making systems and decision-support systems; critical business processes with a particular need for accountability. In all these and further areas, accountability in complex information systems needs to be addressed through technical mechanisms. Existing high-level considerations on accountability in information systems notwithstanding, however, the concrete engineering and implementation of such mechanisms has so far received only limited attention. Similarly, the challenges arising during such transformations of abstract accountability concepts into concrete technologies as well as the critical evaluation of respective implementations are only rarely covered by existing research. We see this workshop as an opportunity to close these gaps through engaging with the existing debate on accountability while integrating key knowledge from the information systems community. Importantly, our approach to accountable systems is not just focused on high level norms of system development, but indispensably also incorporates practical questions of engineering and designing actual systems. We therefore encourage submissions from the above-mentioned and other areas of accountability engineering as long as they sufficiently incorporate questions of concrete systems engineering and implementation. Submission Guidelines Authors should follow the ECIS 2019 guidelines for research in progress papers, with papers between 4 and 7 pages in length. A poster is not required. Full details are available here: http://ecis2019.eu/information-to-authors Submissions must be made through the EasyChair system via the following link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ecis2019eais For questions about the workshop, submissions or review process, contact the chairs via ecis2019eais[at]easychair[dot]org Relevant Dates • Submissions due by March 15 2019 • Replies by April 15 2019 • Final Papers due June 1 2010 • Workshop will be held on June 10 and 11, at Stockholm University’s Kista campus. Research on federated social media
by Dorothy Howard 01 Apr '19

01 Apr '19

Hello Everyone, Has anyone written or know of social research about mainstream social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr) alternatives, i.e. decentralized and federated Social Network Sites such as Bolixo, Diaspora, GNU Social, Friendica, Mastodon, MeWe, Pump.io? This seems like an important area, but I haven't been able to turn up much. Best wishes, Dorothy Howard
