Literature on the cultural notion of the "computer as superior"
by Andrea Guzman 27 Mar '19

27 Mar '19

Hello everyone, I am looking for literature that explores the cultural attitude of the computer as superior to humans in certain domains. For example, people will often say that a computer is more efficient than a human or is more accurate than a human. There is plenty of literature that looks at individual interactions with technology and individual opinions of technology, but, I'm more interested in scholarship that looks at the larger cultural discourse. Thank you. _______________ Andrea L. History of Computers
by Adriana de Souza e Silva 26 Mar '19

26 Mar '19

Hi all, I’m looking for a text (book, article, a few chapters) that tells the history of computers, starting from Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace’s Analytical Engine to present days. This is for a 200-level undergraduate class, so I’m trying to summarize the topic as much as possible, to give students a general overview in a couple of classes. Any suggestions? _________________________ Adriana de Souza e Silva University Faculty Scholar Professor Department of Communication http://www.souzaesilva.com

CfP: EASA Media Anthropology Network Workshop "The Digital Turn in Media Anthropology"
by sahana udupa 26 Mar '19

26 Mar '19

Dear all Apologies for cross-posting Below you find the call for papers/abstracts for the Media Anthropology Network Workshop on the 11th of October 2019 in Munich. Deadline for submissions is the 1st of June. Best wishes. **** CfP: European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) Media Anthropology Network Workshop "The Digital Turn in Media Anthropology" Organizers Prof. Sahana Udupa (Ludwig Maximilian University Munich) Dr. Elisabetta Costa (University of Groningen) Dr. Philipp Budka (University of Vienna) Date & Venue 11 October 2019 Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) Munich, Germany By building on the Media Anthropology Network panel at the EASA 2018 conference in Stockholm and the follow-up e-seminar from 16 Oct. - 9 Nov. 2018 (http://www.media-anthropology.net/index.php/e-seminars) this workshop critically explores “the digital turn” in the anthropological study of media, and aims to push further ethnographic knowledge into the role that digital media technologies play in people's everyday life and broader sociopolitical transformations. In so doing, this workshop contributes to the reassessment of media anthropology in digital times, and raises critical questions on how digital media have posed new epistemological challenges, inspired methodological innovations, and offered opportunities for political activism for media anthropologists. A key question that drives this discussion is whether the digital turn has reconfigured the classic distinction between “home” and “field” through temporally intensified “horizontal” networks on a global scale. Have these connections – culturally translated across different societies – collapsed the distinction between “home” and “field”? As users and researchers of digital media, how do we rework anthropology’s classic conundrum of home-field, distance-nearness and us-other in radically progressive ways? What does the “digital turn” entail in terms of how we engage research participants, and how do we use these new pathways to critique the multidirectional “colonial matrix of power” (Mignalo & Walsh, 2007) that is riding on the very infrastructure of contemporary digital media? We invite scholars to engage with these questions through various topic fields they are researching, and consider this reflexive move as an important step towards challenging “the global fact” of racial, gender, ethnic and religion-based exclusions. We also invite scholars to bring cases of innovative use of digital research to overcome prevailing hierarchies in anthropological knowledge production – between researchers and research participants, as well as within the academic community. Drawing from their own research, and from their engagement with relevant literatures, workshop participants will ask the following questions: * What is the present state of anthropological study on digital media technologies and their impact on culture and society? * What are the main questions in need of urgent research (especially in connection to decolonizing media/digital anthropology, gender, visuality, extreme movements and speech)? * How have digital technologies transformed (media) anthropology and how does the future look for media anthropologists? * What is the role of digital technology in transforming knowledge production and dissemination in media anthropology? * How can anthropologists contribute to the interdisciplinary effort of theorizing digital media practices and digital technologies? * Who will be the main beneficiaries of this research, both in academia and beyond? We invite ethnographic and/or theoretical papers that focus on the above questions. Participants who need travel support to attend the workshop are invited to mention the same (limited financial support is available for travel and accommodation). In a single word document, please send your abstracts of 1000 words and a short bio (100 words) stating your current affiliation, mentioning whether you are an EASA member. Please use the filename format: authorlastname_digitalturnworkshop2019, and send this no later than 1 June 2019 to digitalturnworkshop(a)ethnologie.lmu.de Selected participants will be notified by 30 June 2019. EASA members will get the first preference in travel bursaries.

CfP: Material Manifestations of Dislocation and (Re)connection // Workshop at ECSCW 2019
by Aal, Konstantin 26 Mar '19

26 Mar '19

CALL FOR POSITION PAPERS: One-day Workshop on * Material Manifestations of Dislocation and (Re)connection* in conjunction with ECSCW 2019 https://ecscw.eusset.eu/2019/ Sunday, June 9, 2019 Salzburg, Austria Workshop Website: https://hci.sbg.ac.at/sites/material-dislocation/ --------------------------------- IMPORTANT DATES * Submission of position paper: April 8 * Notifications to authors: May 2 * Early bird registration: May 13 * Workshop at ECSCW: Sunday, June 9 * ECSCW main conference: June 10 – 12 SCOPE AND AIMS This workshop focuses on the material qualities of dislocation. The process of humans becoming separated from each other is likely to have diverse consequences; from shifting frequency, modes, or routines of communication and collaboration, to completely alternate means of connection. In this workshop, we aim to discuss a broad range of material manifestations and implications of (researching and designing for) dislocation. While engaging with material qualities of dislocation, we will reflect on the state of the art, discuss research gaps and potentials, and explore hands-on how design can create opportunities for (re)connection in response to dislocation through the creation of tangible interfaces. The aim of this one-day workshop is to explore how new forms of connections uniquely emerge in situations of dislocation, and what digital and physical materials and materialities are appropriate when designing for such situations. We therefore focus on how to design for (re)connecting in response to dislocation. The key questions that guide the workshop are as follows: * Which physical / socio-cultural / material practices do exist, whether technologically mediated or not, to reconnect in case of dislocation? * Which materials or which interactive qualities are promising to be used for reconnecting? * How can material qualities account for the (often invisible) networked digital apparatus surrounding dislocated interactions? * How can we study the way material qualities in dislocation are actively adopted in everyday practices and how people give meaning to them? PARTICIPATION In order to express interest in participation, interested researchers are asked to provide a position paper (ECSCW 2019 EP template via RTF, MS Word or LaTeX) that covers: 1. an essayistic, empirical, theoretical, material, or designerly discussion of dislocation (3 page max.) 2. the proposal of a material or artefact for exploration that the participants commit to bring to the workshop (1/2 page max.) 3. Personal bio (1/2 page max.) The position paper shall be sent via email to alina.krischkowsky(a)sbg.ac.at<mailto:alina.krischkowsky@sbg.ac.at> ORGANIZERS Konstantin Aal (University of Siegen, Germany) Janne Mascha Beuthel (University of Salzburg, Austria) Laura Devendorf (University of Colorado, Boulder, USA) Verena Fuchsberger (University of Salzburg, Austria) Alina Krischkowsky (University of Salzburg, Austria) Bernhard Maurer (University of Salzburg, Austria) Martin Murer (University of Salzburg, Austria) Marije Nouwen (KU Leuven, Belgium) Dorothé Smit (University of Salzburg, Austria) Manfred Tscheligi (University of Salzburg, Austria & AIT - Austrian Institute of Technology) Bieke Zaman (KU Leuven, Belgium) For any inquiries please contact alina.krischkowsky(a)sbg.ac.at<mailto:alina.krischkowsky@sbg.ac.at>
