Mediated Conversation: HICSS-53 CFP
by Yoram Kalman 29 Mar '19

29 Mar '19

Members of AoIR and of the Air-L listserv who research aspects of online conversation are invited to submit papers to HICSS, the 53rd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) that will take place in the island of Maui, Hawaii in January 2020. [1]https://mediatedconversation.wordpress.com/ The Mediated Conversation minitrack focuses on the study of conversations taking place on digital and social media. Conversations are at the core of human communication. Mediated conversations can use text, audio, images or video, or any combination thereof. The minitrack welcomes research on conversations that are interpersonal, as well as those that occur in organizational or mass communication, educational or political contexts, and in any other sphere of human activity, including the emerging interplay of human-machine communication. Online CFP: [2]http://hicss.hawaii.edu/tracks-53/digital-and-social-media/#mediated -conversation-minitrack Submission: [3]http://hicss.hawaii.edu/authors/ This minitrack brings together researchers and innovators to explore mediated conversation and its implications; to raise new socio-technical, ethical, pedagogical, linguistic, and social questions; and to suggest new methods, perspectives, and design approaches. The Mediated Conversation minitrack is the successor of the Persistent Conversation minitrack established by Tom Erickson and Susan Herring at HICSS in 1999, which was originally focused on the novelty of conversational persistence. With the prevalence of mediated conversation, we are called upon to consider a wider field of issues. Examples of appropriate topics include, but are not limited to: • Innovation in mediated conversational practice • The dynamics and analysis of large-scale conversation systems (e.g., MOOCs and big data applications) • Methods for analyzing mediated conversation: qualitative, quantitative, data analytics, etc. • Mediated collaboration • The dark side of mediated conversation: e.g., loafing, hate speech, bullying, and communication overload • Studies of virtual communities or other sites of mediated conversation • Ethics and mediated conversation: privacy, deception, freedom of speech, security, and information warfare • The role of mediated conversation in knowledge management • The role of mediated conversation in organizations • Domain-specific applications, opportunities, and challenges of mediated conversations and conversational exchanges (e.g., in education, healthcare, social movements, government, citizen participation, and news media) • Conversation visualization • The role of listeners, lurkers, and silent interactions • Novel properties of mediated conversation • A platform’s role in mediating the conversation • Power dynamics and conversational patterns among users of social media • The role of conversation in understanding the interplay between media producers and media audiences • Human-machine communication and related conversations (e.g., chatbots) Fast track journal opportunity: Authors of papers accepted for presentation in the minitrack will be offered the opportunity to submit an extended version of their papers for consideration for fast-track publication in the ACM journal ACM Transaction on Social Computing ([4]https://tsc.acm.org/) Important dates April 15 | 6:00 pm HST: Paper submission begins. June 15 | 11:59 pm HST: Paper submission deadline. August 17 | 11:59 pm HST: Notification of Acceptance/Rejection September 4 | 11:59 pm HST: Deadline for authors to submit the revised version of papers accepted with mandatory changes (A-M) September 11: Notification of Acceptance/Rejection for A-M papers September 22: Deadline for authors to submit final manuscript for publication Minitrack Co-Chairs: Sheizaf Rafaeli (Primary Contact) University of Haifa [5]sheizaf(a)rafaeli.net Seth C. new: special issue on 'Internet Architecture & Human Rights'
by Milan, Stefania 28 Mar '19

28 Mar '19

Dear AoiR friends and colleagues We are very excited to announce the publication of a Special Issue of the journal Policy & Internet on Internet Architecture and Human Rights. Edited by Monika Zalnieriute (Allens Hub for Technology, UNSW Sydney, Australia) and myself, issue 11(1) explores what we call the "human rights gap whereby "the delegation of human rights enforcement to private actors circumvents both international human rights law, and often domestic laws and constitutions as well". Said human rights gap is the consequence of the "vacuum which occurs when human rights are public [] and the Internet architecturethrough which human rights online are largely mediated and governed todayis mainly privately owned or privately operated (Zalnieriute & Milan, p. 8). We explore this claim with the help of stellar contributions, as follows: Samantha Bradshaw & Laura DeNardis: Privacy by Infrastructure: The Unresolved Case of the Domain Name System Niels ten Oever: Productive Contestation, Civil Society, and Global Governance: Human Rights as a Boundary Object in ICANN Milton L. Mueller & Farzaneh Badiei: Requiem for a Dream: On Advancing Human Rights via Internet Architecture Nicolas Suzor, Molly Dragiewicz, Bridget Harris, Rosalie Gillett, Jean Burgess & Tess Van Geelen: Human Rights by Design: The Responsibilities of Social Media Platforms to Address Gender\Based Violence Online Ben Wagner: Liable, but Not in Control? Have a fantastic weekend, Dr. Elinor Carmi, Postdoc Research Associate - Digital Media & Society, Department of Communication and Media, Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences, School of the Arts, Liverpool University, UK. https://elinorcarmi.com<https://elinorcarmi.com/> Twitter: @Elinor_Carmi --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DIPRC2019: Digital Inclusion Policy and Research Conference 2019 University of Liverpool in London, Finsbury Square London, UK, June 18-19, 2019 As more of our everyday lives become digital, from paying bills, to contacting companies and services and keeping in touch with your friends and family - it has become crucial to include everyone in the online world. What type of skills do people need to ‘be digital’? Do different people from different ages and abilities need different types of skills and training? And how can we foresee what skills will be needed for future work? While these questions have been occupying the private sector and policy makers, as more tasks become automated and digitalised they become ever more crucial. Evidence shows that inequalities in access to and use of digital media have measurable impacts on the life chances, health and economic wellbeing of citizens. The GoodThings Foundation published a report on September 2018 which identified that over 11 million UK citizens lack the basic digital skills they need to participate fully in our digital economy<https://www.goodthingsfoundation.org/research-publications/economic-impact-…>. As the Foundation predicts, by 2028 the UK will lose over £22 billion of value as a direct result of digital exclusion. Since the introduction of machine learning and artificial intelligence research has shifted to understanding inequalities in complex skills and use. In addition, as ‘fake news’ and misinformation have become common practice by various entities it has introduced new avenues to include in digital literacies. This shift has become key to some governmental digital strategies, such as those of the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and their equivalents around the globe. This conference will bring together academic research with policy makers and stakeholders to review the current state for the art in digital inclusion policy and practice. The conference will draw upon over two decades of research, policy, and practice. Over this time digital inequalities, digital inclusion and digital literacies have changed in response to developments in digital technologies and media. Though key themes have remained, such as: material and financial access; skills and digital literacy; effective use by citizens and communities; the impact of socio-economic factors; motivation and attitudes; and, more recently socio-economic and socio-cultural variations in patterns of usage. Digital inequities therefore have become an important part of broader persistent issues of social equity and justice. The primary aim of this conference is to link up international policy efforts to address digital inequalities, access and skills with the outcomes of recent research at from around the globe. The intention being to support sharing best practice and research insights. The conference will be a mix of invited presentations from policy and research colleagues, along with open paper sessions. For the open sessions we seek presentations that cover empirical research as well as policy and practice interventions, such as: * Data analysis of levels of digital inclusion/exclusion and engagement * Studies on the link between misinformation and data literacies * Studies of the impacts of digital exclusion * Policy interventions * Case studies of initiatives and programmes * Case studies of community impact Submission and Registration Guidelines The conference is FREE of charge. To register go to the Eventbrite page: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/diprc2019-digital-inclusion-policy-and-resea…. If you wish to present a paper or case study please submit a 300 word abstract by 31st March 2019 to: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=diprc2019. Acceptance notification will be sent by 25th April 2019. Contact The conference is organised by Professor Simeon Yates and Dr. Elinor Carmi, Department of Communication and Media, Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences, School of the Arts, Liverpool University, UK For questions and other inquiries please email Dr. Elinor Carmi - Elinor.Carmi(a)liverpool.ac.uk We look forward to seeing you in June! Venue The conference will run from 18 June to 19 June at the London Campus of the University of Liverpool, University of Liverpool in London, 33 Finsbury Square, London, EC2A 1AG: https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/london/ – just off London’s “Silicon Roundabout” district: http://www.siliconroundabout.org.uk/ .

Re: [Air-L] Searching Instagram/Twitter by keyword and narrowing to specific focus
by Aysenur Ataman 28 Mar '19

Dear Natalie, I do not know any tool that would allow you to combine the two parameters (hashtag and geographical location) when searching for posts on Instagram. I collected data pre Dec 1st 2018 API change via Netlytic and am not sure Netlytic' access is still valid but I do recommend checking that out. Steps I recommend your friend takes: 1) It is very crucial to think carefully about what hashtag will be useful for your research. Better it is not a BIG hashtag. 2) Collect metadata using the hashtag(s) and dates as parameters. 3) Use longitude-latitude to detect locations yourself. Will be much more reliable that way. I played with scraping the number of followers after these steps and see if I can come up with a formula to make sense of number of likes and comments under each post but then I decided with the bots and fake accounts no finding will be reliable. So I gave up… If anyone has thoughts and solutions for that I would be glad to hear.
