CfP The Authoritarian Threat to Europe's Liberal Democracies
by Schulze, Heidi 01 Apr '19

01 Apr '19

Dear colleagues, We are happy to share with you the invitation for submissions for a EUROLAB Authors’ Conference on “The Authoritarian Threat to Europe’s Liberal Democracies” to be held in Cologne/Germany on November 21-22, 2019. [Abstracts due on April 30, 2019] Please find the full call here: https://www.gesis.org/index.php?id=11260&L=1&no_cache=1 Summary: Recent years have seen a number of worrying developments across Europe: the rise of populist parties (Pappas 2016), increasing polarization and radicalization of attitudes and public discourse (Benkler et al. 2018), the advent of alternative media and “fake news” (Arif et al. 2018, Sanovich 2018), and a shift towards authoritarian values among citizens (Foa and Mounk 2016, 2017). While a number of contributions have discussed the causes of these developments, research on their consequences is still scarce. We therefore want to bring together papers that analyze whether and how these “authoritarian trends” affect the stability and functioning of European democracies. We invite contributions from political science and communication science that address one of more the following themes: - the functioning of social media as echo chambers, their instrumentalization by radical actors and their contribution to fostering a climate of hatred and polarization, - the effect of disinformation campaigns on citizens’ perceptions of democratic institutions - the dissemination of autocratic views and authoritarian values through digital media, - the effects of (increasing) polarization on societal conflicts and political participation, For the full Call for Papers, please visit the conference website at https://www.gesis.org/index.php?id=11260&L=1&no_cache=1. Abstracts are due on April 30, 2019. Selected papers will be published. We look forward to receiving your proposals! Digital Methods Summer School 2019
by Richard Rogers 01 Apr '19

01 Apr '19

"Trolls, bots and dictators" - On the current state of social media research Digital Methods Summer School 2019 1-12 July 2019 Media Studies, University of Amsterdam https://www.digitalmethods.net <https://www.digitalmethods.net/> Trolls, bots and dictators could be considered a summary of how social media and particularly its dominant study have evolved over a few short years. If one considers the chronology of research, one could begin with the dictators and the related debunking of the naiveté and euphoria associated with the web's potential. Instead of emancipatory, the web became authoritarian, as scholars turned to concentrate on state censorship and surveillance, developing such terms as networked authoritarianism. With respect to the second term, bots, studies of automation now routinely discuss Internet toxicity (as Microsoft’s Tay ‘learned') as well as so-called computational propaganda that includes autonomous agents inflating follower counts and thus symbolic power. Finally, trolls in themselves were once tolerated (and unfed) as part of the new media landscape, but recently scholars have turned to the study of the “ambivalent” or ridiculing web, characterised by insincere mockery, and how attention to it amplifies and gives it "oxygen”. Taking up this topic (and many others) within a culture of experimentation and skill-sharing, participants bring their laptops, learn method, undertake research projects, make reports and graphics, as well as present them and write them up on the wiki. About the Summer School The Summer School is one training opportunity provided by the Digital Methods Initiative (DMI). DMI also has a Winter School <https://wiki.digitalmethods.net/Dmi/WinterSchool>. The Summer School has a technical staff as well as a design staff, drawn from the ranks of Density Design in Milan. The Summer School also relies on a technical infrastructure of servers hosting tools and storing data. There are tutorials as well as two projects undertaken, one per week. The Summer School concludes with final presentations. Often there are subject matter experts from non-governmental or other organizations who present their analytical needs and issues at the outset and the projects seek to meet those needs, however indirectly. Please see previous Digital Methods Summer Schools, 2007-2018, https://wiki.digitalmethods.net/Dmi/DmiSummerSchool <https://wiki.digitalmethods.net/Dmi/DmiSummerSchool>. See also previous Digital Methods Winter Schools, 2009-2019, https://wiki.digitalmethods.net/Dmi/WinterSchool <https://wiki.digitalmethods.net/Dmi/WinterSchool>. The Digital Methods Initiative was founded with a grant from the Mondriaan Foundation, and the Summer School has been supported by the Center for Creation, Content and Technology (CCCT <http://ccct.uva.nl/>), University of Amsterdam, organized by the Faculty of Science with sponsorship from Platform Beta. The Digital Methods Summer School is self-sustaining. Applications To apply for the Digital Methods Summer School 2019, please use the University of Amsterdam Summer School form <https://pontifex-survey.uva.nl/IntakeRTE/index.jsp?language=en&formid=MS_Su…> (http://bit.ly/applic_form <http://bit.ly/applic_form>). If the form is not working, please send a one-page letter explaining how digital methods training would benefit your current work, and also enclose a CV (with full postal address), a copy of your passport (details page only), a headshot photo as well as a 100-word bio. Mark your application "DMI Summer Program," and send to summerschool [at] digitalmethods.net <http://digitalmethods.net/>. The deadline for applications for the Summer School is 20 May 2019. Notifications will be sent on 21 May. If you need early admission, please let us know. Any questions may be addressed to the Summer School coordinators, summerschool [at] digitalmethods.net <http://digitalmethods.net/>. Informal queries may be sent to the email address as well. The Summer School costs EUR 995. Accepted applicants will be informed of the bank transfer details upon notice of acceptance to the Summer School on 21 May. The fee must be paid by 30 June. University of Amsterdam students are exempt from tuition and should state on the application form that they wish to apply for a fee waiver and provide their student number. Scholarships The Digital Methods Summer School is part of the University of Amsterdam Summer School <http://summerschool.uva.nl/> programme, which has materials giving a flavor of the Summer School experience. Students from universities in the LERU <http://www.leru.org/> and U21 <http://www.universitas21.com/> networks (outside of the Netherlands) are eligible for a scholarship to help cover part of the cost for tuition (EUR 500). Please indicate that you are a member of LERU or U21 when applying. Accommodations and Catering The Summer School is self-catered, and there are abundant cafes and sandwich shops nearby. For a map we made of nearby lunch (and coffee) places, see http://bit.ly/lunchandcoffee <http://bit.ly/lunchandcoffee>. Apply as early as possible to the reasonably priced Student Hotel <http://www.thestudenthotel.com/> and mention that you are attending the Digital Methods Summer School 2019. Successful Completion and Completion Certificates (including 6 ECTS) To successfully complete the Summer School and receive a Completion Certificate (and 6 ECTS), you must complete a significant contribution to two Summer School projects (one in week one and the other in week two), evidenced by co-authorship of the project reports as well as final (joint) presentations. Templates for the project report <https://wiki.digitalmethods.net/Dmi/ProjectTemplate> as well as for the presentation slides are supplied. Schedule The Summer School meets every weekday. Please bring your laptop. (An iPad is not enough.) We start generally at 9:15 in the morning, and end around 5:30. There are morning talks at the beginning of each week, followed by hands-on tutorials. All other time is devoted to project work with occasional collective and individual feedback sessions. On the last Friday we have a festive closing. 01 Apr '19

Call for proposals Materializing Activism: A workshop at ECSCW 2019, June 9 in Salzburg, Austria. Net activism shows how easily available tools allow the organization of social movements to be scaled up and extended globally. These media ecologies enable new forms of power. This one-day workshop gathers researchers focusing on the collaborative efforts within social movements, looking into the socio-technical systems; the organization of activism; the relations between traditional and social media; and the complex network of systems, information, people, values, theories, histories, ideologies and aesthetics underlying various types of activism. The workshop consists of presentations and brainstorming sessions where we materialize the intangible and develop our theories and ideas further through a collaborative design process. Deadline for submissions is April 8, 2019. The maximum length of a paper is 2,000 words. The papers should follow the ECSCW formatting guidelines. Submissions and inquiries shall be sent to the following email address: khansson(a)dsv.su.se<mailto:khansson@dsv.su.se> For more information about the workshop and suggested topics visit the web page: https://materializingactivism.blogs.dsv.su.se<https://materializingactivism.blogs.dsv.su.se/>

CFP: Algorithms on the Shop Floor: Data-driven Technologies in Organizational Context
by danah boyd 30 Mar '19

30 Mar '19

Call for Workshop Participation Algorithms on the Shop Floor: Data-driven Technologies in Organizational Context Deadline for applications: April 19, 2019 Workshop date: June 14, 2019 in NYC at Data & Society <http://datasociety.net/> Application link: http://datasociety.net/algorithms-on-the-shop-floor <http://datasociety.net/algorithms-on-the-shop-floor> For questions, email events(a)datasociety.net <mailto:events@datasociety.net> On June 14, 2019, Data & Society will host a workshop in NYC on the intersection of technology and organizational theory and practice. The workshop arises from an increasing need to understand how automated, algorithmic, AI, or otherwise data-driven technologies are being integrated into organizational contexts and processes. The workshop will convene researchers who study how new technologies are introduced, incorporated, resisted or maintained within organized groups, and the changes this integration brings. Such changes might include processes (workflows, tasks, “re-skilling,” “changed” skills, augmentation) or in structures (roles, jurisdictions, authority), or other key sociological issues (such as power, culture, diversity, expertise, risk, rationality, legitimacy, and solidarity). In a world where new technologies are being integrated into organizations of all sizes and types, how can we make sense of what gets lost, what gets gained, and what gets changed? Many of these questions are long standing themes in organizational studies and ethnographies examining the social complexities of working on the machine shop floor, to which the title of our workshop alludes. Still, how do such integrations provoke new shifts in power relations and social values? The range of field sites and research questions appropriate for this event is wide. The only requirements for participation are that: 1) you must be a researcher (with or without an academic affiliation); 2) your research questions must address a dimension of socio-technical practice in the context of a formalized organization. Relevant topics for this workshop might include: How do formations of power, hierarchy, and discretionary decision-making change when automated and AI technologies are introduced? How are issues of diversity and equity brought into and reconstituted when new technologies are introduced? How does the integration of new technologies into organizations intersect with issues of access, inclusion, and disability? What are sites of unintended use, resistance, or deviance with respect to technology in organizations? How are new forms of expertise, skill, and training emerging to meet demands of using new technologies in the workplace? How are new or existing labor organizations confronting the perceived threat of AI? What are organizational formations or organizational processes that build on digital technologies to advance equity and social justice? What lessons does the history of organizational theory and practice hold for contemporary dynamics? How are bureaucratic forms of control (such as auditing or impact policy) integrated into the development of technology? These examples are by no means exhaustive, but intended to provide a flavor of the kind of relevant research questions. We are especially interested in strange outliers and unexpected studies. Key Dates * Application Deadline: April 19, 2019 * Selection Decisions: May 1, 2019 * Full Paper Deadline: May 28, 2019 * Workshop: June 14, 2019 Participation Requirements The structure of the Data & Society Workshop series is designed to maximize scholarly thinking about the evolving and societally important issues surrounding data-driven technologies. Participants will be asked to read three full papers in advance of the event and prepare comments for intensive discussion. Some participants will be asked to be discussants of papers, where they will lead the conversation and engage the room. Authors will not present their work, but rather participate in critical discussion with the assembled group about the paper, with explicit intent of making the work stronger and more interdisciplinary. All participants are required to read three papers in advance of the event and come ready to offer constructively critical feedback. We want researchers to constructively spar with and challenge one another to strengthen ourselves across the board. This is not an event for passive attendance, but an opportunity to engage each other substantively. This event is first and foremost an opportunity to collectively think and help construct a field. Although this event is designed to bring together 30-40 researchers, only 12 papers will be workshopped. Yet, everyone who attends is expected to be an active participant and contribute to rich conversations. We believe that it is through active engagement with other scholars around research that new insights can emerge. In other words, this event is designed to be the kind of intense intellectual engagement that made you fall in love with being a researcher in the first place. Format The day will be organized into three time slots, each 75 minutes long. One paper will be workshopped in each session. Multiple sessions will run in parallel so there will be a total of ~12 papers, but each participant will only be responsible for reading and engaging with 3. Within each group, a discussant will open with a critique of the paper before inviting participants to share their feedback. (If you participate in this event, you may be asked to be a discussant on one paper.) All are expected to share feedback, with author response towards the end of the session. Logistics The event will take place on June 14, 2019, and will run from 8:45am to 6pm. Paper sessions will run until 4:15pm; afterwards, there will be a reception for all participants. All meals will be covered during the event. Unfortunately, we have limited funding to support travel for this workshop; however, we’re happy to provide a formal invitation for participation/“speaking” to anyone who may need it to secure their own funding. Application Process (Deadline: April 19) For this event, we are looking to bring together researchers from diverse disciplines studying technology in organizations. This can include management, organization studies, communications, information studies, computer-supported cooperative work, computer-human interaction, science and technology studies, ethics, labor, law, policy, anthropology, and design research. As a result, attendees should expect to engage with scholars who are outside of their field of study. We ask that attendees think of the Data & Society Workshop series as an opportunity to engage with a broader cross-disciplinary field, and to strengthen both relationships and research through participation in the workshop. Because the paper submission date is only a few weeks after the application deadline, you should only apply as an author if you have a paper that you’re actively writing right now and will be ready to share a draft with others by May 28, 2019. If you aren’t already working on this paper, you probably aren’t in a good position to workshop it at this event. Appropriate papers may be a work-in-progress book chapter or a journal article. (Full-length books are a bit too much for this event, so if you’re writing a book, think about the chapter that you most want to get feedback on.) To apply as an author, please submit the following: * Name, affiliation, title, email address, discipline. * Big research question you’re seeking to answer with your research. * Paper title + 100-250 word abstract. * The current half-baked, thick-outline, total mess of the paper.** ** We are asking for the disaster of a paper to understand where you are with the piece now, and the arguments you intend to make, so that we can appropriately match you to a discussant. We won’t share this version with anyone (we promise). Please note: All co-authors for papers must apply separately. If your co-author doesn’t apply, we will assume that s/he is not interested in attending the workshop. It will be hard to add additional participants later, so make sure your co-authors apply if they want to attend. To apply as a participant/discussant, please submit the following: * Name, affiliation, title, email address, discipline. * Big research question you’re seeking to answer with your research. * 100-250 word description of your research. Seeking Dialogue submissions for Surveillance & Society: Decolonizing Surveillance Studies
by Bryce Newell 29 Mar '19

29 Mar '19

Dear Colleagues, As the new Dialogue Editor of *Surveillance & Society* <https://ojs.library.queensu.ca/index.php/surveillance-and-society> (the journal of the Surveillance Studies Network), I invite expressions of interest to write short (~2000-3000 word) papers for an upcoming Dialogue (formerly "Debate") section of the journal on the topic of "Decolonizing Surveillance Studies." In part, this idea was sparked by recent work, including *Dark Matters *by Simone Brown, Payal Arora's work on "Decolonizing Privacy Studies," and Virginia Eubanks' work on automating inequality. I am particularly interested in proposals for contributions that speak to 1) the broader theme and agenda-setting issues of decolonizing surveillance studies as a field of study (e.g., links between colonialization/colonial perspectives and surveillance research or practices); 2) how existing surveillance-related power imbalances have led to situations where "governments, technology companies, and elite multilateral organizations (. . .) often use[] the Global South public [or other marginalized groups] . . . as testbeds for innovations in technological surveillance" (Arora, 2018); and 3) normative proposals for decolonizing surveillance research and practices. If you are interested in proposing a short paper for inclusion in this discussion, which will include a mix of solicited and proposed papers, please send the following to me on or before the end of day on *April 8, 2019*: - Your *name *and details of your institutional *affiliation *(if applicable) - A title and short, *250-400 word, abstract* for your proposed contribution (proposals should connect to the themes identified above and also have a strong normative element) Please note that Dialogue pieces are not refereed, but are subject to editorial review and possible requests for revision. I look forward to reading your proposals. Sincerely, Bryce *Bryce Clayton Newell, JD, PhD* Assistant Professor School of Information Science, College of Communication and Information Department of Sociology (by courtesy), College of Arts & Sciences University of Kentucky Dialogue Editor, *Surveillance & Society <https://ojs.library.queensu.ca/index.php/surveillance-and-society>* Research Associate, *Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society * (TILT) www.bcnewell.com | Google Scholar <https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=7kICf7kAAAAJ> <http://ssrn.com/author=1576462> | @newmedialaw <http://twitter.com/newmedialaw> Watch: The Tinaja Trail <https://humanitarianfilm.wordpress.com/2014/11/13/watch-the-tinaja-trail-on…> (a documentary about humanitarian response to migrant deaths along the US-Mexico border)
