cyber security and gender

Hello people of AoIR, Myself and colleagues are busy writing a paper on gendered differences in cybersecurity awareness (aka how well resilient are they against cybersecurity attacks) among ComSci and non-ComSci students at a South African university, and our findings include awareness determined by gender (mostly because the majority of ComSci students are cis male). I have three questions for those of you who explore these intersections: 1. Has anyone written about *describing* gender in this kind of research, beyond the binaries. It is 2019 after all, and I don't think writing about "male" and "female" participants isn't a very nuanced approach, despite the gendered nature of the findings. Any literature to recommend? 2. Any literature on cybersecurity and gendered risks to recommend? 3. Are there any knowledge communities whose research we should be looking at in terms of conferences, publications, research centers? These experience-based and practical reports need not contain original research, but must be accurate, complete and, where applicable, evidence-based accounts of the technology or system used. Submissions will be judged on the quality of review and level of analysis, and the applicability of the results to other democracies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track on E-Voting System Demo Chair: Rønne, Peter (University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg) We invite demonstrations of electronic voting systems and related software, to be presented in an open session on Tuesday 1 October before the welcoming reception. Participation is open to all participants at the conference, but we request a Short Paper (two pages) by 15 September submitted via Easychair describing system requirements and properties, e.g.: - whether the system is intended for use in controlled (i.e. in polling stations) or uncontrolled environments (i.e. remotely via the Internet or in kiosks); - which types of elections it accommodates; - whether it addresses needs of voters with disabilities; - what sort of verifiability it provides; - the extent to which it guarantees voter privacy; - whether it has been deployed in a real election; - how to obtain more information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- PhD Colloquium Chairs: Koenig, Reto (Bern University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland), Driza Maurer, Ardita (Zentrum für Demokratie Aarau ZDA/ University of Zurich, Switzerland) The aim of the colloquium is to foster understanding and collaboration between PhD students from various disciplines working on e-voting. To this end, the program allows plenty of scope for discussion and to initiate collaboration based on presentations by attendees. Each participant interested should submit his/her research proposal (or alternatively ideas for papers, open problems, or other issues where feedback from colleagues would be helpful etc.) in the form of a short paper (two pages in length) using the conference's EasyChair platform. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Format of the Conference The format of the conference will be a three-day meeting. The PhD Colloquium and the Demonstration Session take place on the day before the formal conference begins. Seeking panelists for IR 2019

Dear Colleagues, Apologies for the belatedness of this request; after changing my email affiliation, I've had problems posting to the listserv. I am organizing a panel on Instagram research for the upcoming AoIR conference, and I am seeking participants for the panel. Despite a number of conversations and a few individual papers, that have been few panels dedicated to Instagram in the history of AoIR. This panel seeks to collect and examine research on Instagram specifically as a site of activity. I am looking for panelists who align closely with the conference theme, Trust in the System, but that is not to say this is the only rubric for inclusion in the panel. If you research Instagram and are interested in joining this panel, please reply off-list with a 250-word abstract of your study by February 20 to my email address at plothet(a)savannahstate.edu. At the same time, the edge of the Internet is increasingly empowered with new capabilities, like pervasive sensing and computing power, which opens the way to new domains, services and business models beyond traditional mobile Internet, such as connected cars, participatory and urban sensing, industrial IoT. As a consequence, new types of information have to be delivered by the network with varying requirements in terms of reliability, transmission rates and latency. To cope with the exponential growth of devices and mobile data traffic, there is a need for clean-slate or evolutionary Internet architectures merging and assembling different network technologies, supporting new paradigms for wired/wireless system planning and optimization, efficient transport over heterogeneous wireless access options, efficient and quality-aware content distribution, and new approaches for unified operations and management of the heterogeneous components, like software-defined systems and network function virtualization. These are only some examples of the challenges that are of interest to IFIP WWIC 2019. The IFIP WWIC 2019 conference takes a broader view to the merge of wired and wireless technologies and welcomes submissions from academia and industry that explore challenges and advances in architectures, algorithms, protocols, and technologies for a global wired/wireless Internet network. Papers that present original work, validated by experimentation, simulation, or analysis, are solicited. We also encourage work-in-progress and position papers that describe highly original ideas, present new directions, or have the potential to generate insightful provocative discussions. IFIP WWIC is a single-track conference which has reached, over the last 15 years, a high-quality level, which is reflected by the paper acceptance rate as well as the level of attendance. The award is given by APSA’s Political Communication section for the best PhD dissertation in Political Communication awarded in the previous calendar year (so any dissertation that was passed in 2018 would be eligible). AoIR and Digital Methods

Hi everyone, as the current President of AoIR, I wanted to follow up on the very active discussion regarding digital methods that we’ve seen on the list over these past few days. It’s great to see the enthusiasm for this within our community, and I’m very happy about the amount of organising that’s already started - many thanks to everyone involved in this. As always, AoIR crucially depends on its members volunteering to move these efforts forward - that’s been the case with the work on our ethics guidelines almost since the Association started, and I think it’s the same with digital methods (and of course the two are closely interrelated). So as the informal working group that’s now coming together to discuss methods is developing, I do want us to think about how we might give this effort a more formal space within AoIR’s activities over the longer term. I don’t have a ready-made solution for this, but I would encourage those of you who are getting involved in this discussion, here and on Discord, to keep this question in the back of your minds as you go. We have had general digital methods pre-conference workshops at our annual AoIR conferences for the past five years or so; these have usually been organised by various colleagues at the University of Amsterdam and Queensland University of Technology, and gone through the standard conference submissions process. At times, there have also been further workshops on specific methods, platforms, and questions. I hope that these will continue for as long as people find them useful, and I would encourage anyone with the relevant skills and interests to propose such workshops, as well as papers, panel sessions, roundtables, and fishbowls, for our conferences in this and future years (<hint> submissions for AoIR 2019 close on 1 March </hint>). We will also soon call for expressions of interest to host further AoIR Flashpoint Symposia, and some of these smaller, one-day events could also focus on digital methods questions. But perhaps there is also an opportunity here to make such workshops a more formal, standard part of our conferences and events, in the same way that our Doctoral Colloquium is. In addition, of course, many of you have already highlighted the summer and winter schools, MOOCs, tools, code repositories, and other sources of information that you’ve found useful in coming to terms with various digital methods, tools, and data sources. If we can find volunteers from the working group that is now forming who are happy to commit some time to curating and maintaining this information, we might make this information available through the AoIR site - and perhaps we could even negotiate discounts for AoIR members with the providers of some of the fee-paying services in that list. But perhaps those ideas aren’t everything, and there are other ways in which AoIR can support this effort - if you have other ideas, I’d genuinely like to hear them. We may not be able to support everything (and again, we are a volunteer-based organisation, so if you have a great idea please also get involved in making it happen), but as with the efforts of our Ethics Working Group we can at least provide the platform that AoIR has to help make your ideas more visible and connect those of you who can make them fly. If you have any ideas for what we can do, and are willing to volunteer to make them happen, please feel to follow up here on the list, and/or email me at prez(a)aoir.org. Benjamin Designing for Civil Conversations: Lessons Learned from ChangeMyView https://smartech.gatech.edu/bitstream/handle/1853/59080/cmv_chi_paper.pdf Research has shown that people all over the world, and particularly Americans, are divided over many issues – from immigration and gun control to economic and foreign policy. Information bubbles further contribute to these divisions: People prefer to consume content they feel familiar with and see views they agree with. Yet, pluralism and viewpoint diversity are necessary for a well-functioning democracy. In this paper, we explore how we can design interfaces that dial down partisan antipathy and allow users with opposing viewpoints to understand one another. We study ChangeMyView (CMV) subreddit, a community that encourages users to change their opinion by inviting reasoned counterarguments from other members. We use interviews with 15 CMV members to gain insights about the design mechanisms and social norms that allow this community to function well. We also explore how we can replicate such civil interactions between users with different ideologies on other platforms.
