2nd CFP: Proposals Due 4/15 for the Fall 2019 Mapping (In)Justice Symposium in NYC
by Gregory Donovan 22 Mar '19

22 Mar '19

2ND CALL FOR PROPOSALS Mapping (In)Justice: Digital Theory + Praxis for Critical Scholarship November 7-8, 2019 at Fordham University (New York, NY) PROPOSALS DUE: Monday, April 15th https://mappinginjustice.org <https://mappinginjustice.org/> ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM This symposium creates space for critically considering digital mapping as both a method and an object of analysis. Specifically, we invite submissions that analyze or utilize spatial media so as to rethink and re-present distributions of capital, power, and privilege in historical, contemporary, and speculative contexts. We center “mapping” as an organizing theme for understanding and engaging social (in)justice because of its expanding role in literally and metaphorically arranging contemporary life. The everyday adoption of new spatial media—such as web-based mapping platforms, geosocial applications, and locative data—increasingly orient how society understands the past, experiences the present, and plans for the future. To map social justice and injustice is to consider how spatial media can help draw together dichotomies such as medium/method, art/science, and ontology/epistemology so as to trace, represent, and rework matters of inequity. This symposium thus encourages submissions that explore structural inequities in or through spatial media, especially as they relate to matters of difference—such as race, gender, class, ethnicity, ability, sexuality, and religion. We also encourage submissions that utilize digital mapping to spatially represent historically marginalized perspectives through empirical, textual, archival, participatory, and/or pedagogical methods. We welcome 250 word proposals for Short Papers and Gallery Projects that critically address matters of social (in)justice in historical, contemporary or speculative contexts in relation to—but not limited to—the following: - mapping in digital humanities and computational social sciences - critical and/or feminist GIS - participatory and collaborative mapping - digital geography, neogeography, and the geoweb - spatial learning and digital pedagogy - mapping public histories - aesthetics and representation in digital mapping - mapping of cultural texts and artifacts - mapping media ecologies and augmented realities - smart urbanism and spatial data infrastructures Submitted proposals will be reviewed by the Symposium Committee. 2,000 word papers will be requested prior to the symposium for accepted Short Paper proposals. Panels and keynotes will be livestreamed and the symposium proceedings will be archived in Fordham University’s Institutional Repository. A selection of papers from the symposium proceedings will be invited for inclusion in an edited volume or journal issue. In the past I have studied web accessibility from the social rights, standards, and design perspective but am now turning to business and economic motivations to further the field. I would like to research the field of web accessibility for people with disabilities and am looking for articles which include theories related to the corporate need to make their websites accessible for people with disabilities. Most of the theories I found are focused on the social rights, independence and personalization for people with disabilities, but I would like to understand the basics of inclusiveness for people with disabilities through technologies for the business sector. The laws are relevant at this time, but legal aside, if I am a business owner what theories might explain motivation to invest in making my websites/apps etc accessible for people with disabilities? What could you please suggest me to look for and which theory articles might help me? Workshop on Adaptive and Personalized Privacy and Security (APPS 2019) at ACM UMAP 2019 - Extended Call for Papers
by Marios Belk 21 Mar '19

21 Mar '19

ACM UMAP Workshop - Adaptive and Personalized Privacy and Security (APPS 2019) EXTENDED CALL FOR PAPERS The International Workshop on Adaptive and Personalized Privacy and Security, in conjunction with the 27th ACM Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (ACM UMAP 2019), Larnaca, Cyprus, June 09-12, 2019 Workshop Website: http://appsworkshop.cs.ucy.ac.cy Paper Submissions: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=apps2019 IMPORTANT DATES Extended submission deadline: March 24, 2019 (23:59 AoE time) Notification: April 01, 2019 Camera-ready papers: April 08, 2019 MOTIVATION & GOALS Millions of users across different continents and countries are daily engaged with privacy and security tasks which are indispensable in modern information systems and services. Such tasks are commonly related to user authentication, human interaction proofs (e.g., captcha), privacy and security pop-up dialogs, setting privacy and security features within online user profiles, etc. Recent privacy and security incidents of famous online services have once more underpinned the necessity towards further investigating and improving current approaches and practices related to the design of efficient and effective privacy and security. In order to achieve this objective, one possible direction is related to providing adaptive and personalized characteristics to privacy- and security-related user tasks, given the diversity of the user characteristics (like cultural, cognitive, age, habits), the technology (like standalone, mobile, mixed-virtual-augmented reality, wearables) and interaction contexts of use (like being on the move, social settings, spatial limitations). Hence, adaptive and personalized privacy and security implies the ability of an interactive system or service to support its end-users, who are engaged in privacy- and/or security-related tasks, based on user models which describe in a holistic way what constitutes the user’s physical, technological and interaction context in which computation takes place. APPS 2019 aims to bring together researchers and practitioners working on diverse topics related to understanding and improving the usability of privacy and security software and systems, by applying user modeling, adaptation and personalization principles. The workshop will address the following objectives: - increase our understanding and knowledge on supporting usable privacy and security interaction design through novel user modeling mechanisms and adaptive user interfaces; - discuss methods and techniques for understanding user attitudes and perceptions towards privacy and security issues in various application areas; - identify human-centered models for the design, development and evaluation of adaptive and personalized privacy and security systems; - discuss methods for evaluating the impact and added value of adaptation and personalization in privacy and security systems. TOPICS OF INTEREST Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Adaptation and personalization approaches in usable privacy and security - Effects of human factors (e.g., cognition, personality, etc.) in privacy and security systems - Novel user interaction concepts and user interfaces for achieving usable security - Cultural diversity in usable privacy and security - Context-aware privacy and security - Adaptive usable security in various domains such as healthcare, IoT, automotive - Trust perceived in patient-centric healthcare systems - Perceived security and usability in patient-centric healthcare systems - Adaptive user authentication policies - Novel approaches to the design and evaluation of usable security systems - Lessons learned from the deployment and use of usable privacy and security features - Ethical considerations in adaptive and personalized privacy and security PAPER SUBMISSION & PUBLICATION All workshop papers must contain original, previously unpublished, research work adhering the two publication types: - Full research papers (6 pages, incl. references), proposing new approaches, innovative methods and research findings. - Short research papers (4 pages, incl. references), presenting works in progress, lessons learned, emerging or future research issues and directions on topics related to APPS. Manuscripts should be formatted using the ACM Standard (SIGCONF) templates (http://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template) Please submit your paper through the EasyChair submission system: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=apps2019 At least one author of each accepted paper must attend the workshop and present the paper. Accepted papers will be published by ACM and will be available via the ACM Digital Library. Re: [Air-L] disability and technology

Hi Harel, and all, Very exciting to hear about your work - so best wishes with it - and thanks to everyone for great suggestions. The angle it sounds like you are working on - e.g. 'what theories might explain motivation to invest in making my websites/apps etc accessible for people with disabilities?' - has been a longstanding area of inquiry/interest, but fairly tricky/contested (and also often the framing was a big limitation). So I think what has happened over some years is that researchers, practitioners, and activists have sought to frame the question much more widely and deeply - hence the great work that has emerged, especially in last couple of years, on disability and technology. So this has advantage of giving overdue attention to the profound ways that disability and technology interact - which then really revolutionizes how one might approach questions of how/why accessibility is framed and happens. Here you might find useful a recent special issue of Information, Community and Society I co-edited on 'Disability Participation in the Digital Economy': https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/rics20/22/4?nav=tocList Cheers, Gerard On 22/3/19, 8:04 am, "Air-L on behalf of Jonathan Sterne, Dr." <air-l-bounces(a)listserv.aoir.org on behalf of jonathan.sterne(a)mcgill.ca> wrote: Hi Harel, Lots of good recommendations already. CfP: Psychoanalysis, Sexualities and Networked Media
by Jacob Johanssen 21 Mar '19

21 Mar '19

*Psychoanalysis, Culture & Society *(Special Issue) *Psychoanalysis, Sexualities and Networked Media* *Edited by Jacob Johanssen (Communication and Media Research Institute, * *University of Westminster, **j.johanssen(a)westminster.ac.uk* <j.johanssen(a)westminster.ac.uk>*)* For psychoanalysis, sexuality, how it is both individually thought about and lived and how it is culturally constructed, is key to understanding both the human psyche and social change. Freud believed that the sexual behaviour of an individual, from the earliest stages of development onwards, provided key insights into how they related to others and themselves in life more generally. While Freud stressed that there is no ‘normal’ sexuality and heterosexuality was a myth, his particular theories of female sexuality were nonetheless critiqued by feminist thinkers. Initially for Freud, the symptom itself was a distorted or covered manifestation of sexual activity which related to conflicts. Those ideas were developed by post-Freudian psychoanalysts in numerous ways. It is psychoanalysis that fundamentally contributed to the theorisation and understanding of the role that sexual desires and fantasies play in our (un)conscious forms of relating to ourselves and others. While psychoanalytic schools have come to understand sexuality in different ways, other disciplines such as queer theory, cultural studies and philosophy have grappled with and drawn on those conceptualisations of sexuality. Particular notions that are often taken for granted in every day discourse – perversion, fetishism, voyeurism – were (and are) developed by psychoanalysts. The call for papers for a special issue of Psychoanalysis, Culture and Society takes psychoanalytic theories of sexuality / sexualities and how they were adapted/critiqued by other disciplines as a starting point for analysing contemporary networked media, online spaces and digital phenomena. In the past two decades, the Internet and networked devices have not only transformed societies but also human agency and subjectivity. How we communicate and relate to others has been shaped by our engagement with and immersion in digital media, devices and platforms. Social media in particular can be seen as enablers of unprecedented levels of human communication and cooperation which result in a sense of recognition and security for individuals, at the same time users have become data points which are commodified, surveyed and tracked by companies, governments and other entities. Contemporary online communication is also often marked by strong levels of hatred, aggression and polarisation which are characterised by the symbolic, and sometimes physical, destruction of the other. This proposed special issue of Psychoanalysis, Culture and Society places a specific focus on sexualities in contemporary online spaces. Sexualities have become more flexible and fluid thanks to technology as they are facilitated through hook up apps like Tinder, or Grindr. In reproductive terms, devices connected to the Internet such as fertility and health check apps have also become available. The Internet facilitates an informative and pleasurable engagement with sexualities, be it through online content, or communities around sexual identities for example. Subjects reveal aspects about their sexualities online more than ever before. At the same time, much of mainstream pornography has been critiqued as depicting women as oppressed, sexualised objects aimed to satisfy a male gaze. Clinicians have also noted that pornography can impact young people’s sexual development in harmful ways. Perhaps somewhat related to the widespread engagement with some forms of pornography, women are discussed in certain online spaces (such as forums on Reddit or 4chan) in highly misogynistic terms. Such language is often inspired by right-wing discourse and imagery which has gained increasing visibility online. The #MeToo movement on the other hand has made use of social media for activist purposes in order to resist and expose the widespread sexual assault and harassment conducted by men. It has attracted criticism for some of the methods and narratives deployed which have led to false accusations for example.
