looking for theories about people with disabilities inclusion through technologies
by Harel Chait 20 Mar '19

20 Mar '19

Dear all, I am Harel Chait, a PhD student at the Business School, Bar Ilan University. In the past I have studied web accessibility from the social rights, standards, and design perspective but am now turning to business and economic motivations to further the field. I would like to research the field of web accessibility for people with disabilities and am looking for articles which include theories related to the corporate need to make their websites accessible for people with disabilities. Most of the theories I found are focused on the social rights, independence and personalization for people with disabilities, but I would like to understand the basics of inclusiveness for people with disabilities through technologies for the business sector. The laws are relevant at this time, but legal aside, if I am a business owner what theories might explain motivation to invest in making my websites/apps etc accessible for people with disabilities? What could you please suggest me to look for and which theory articles might help me? Thanks. -- Harel Chait Web Accessibility Expert (International Association of Accessibility Professiona ls "IAAP" Member) PhD Candidate i n Information Systems at Business School, Bar-Ilan University. Tool: Download Embedded Twitter Media - Gephi Compatible
by Allen-Robertson, James 19 Mar '19

19 Mar '19

Dear all, I’ve developed a small command line tool for downloading media from Twitter. Discussions on the AOIR digital methods Discord channel demonstrated a demand for such a tool so I went ahead and pulled something together. The script (Python based) takes either a list of tweet ids or an exported data table generated using the TwitterStreamingImporter plugin in Gephi, and retrieves all embedded photos, videos and animated gifs. It is currently relatively bare bones, but it has an extensive guide to support those unfamiliar with running Python scripts. If you have any issues/feature requests feel free to email me or log an Issue on Github. Webinar NGI Data Methods
by Felix Szabo 19 Mar '19

19 Mar '19

Hi all, We would like to invite you to join our webinar to explore the exciting data science methods and visualisations we developed as part of the Next Generation Internet Initiative, and learn more about how you can use these kinds of data-driven insights in your own work. *Our work * Over the past year, we’ve been laying the groundwork for building the research and funding agenda of the Next Generation Internet initiative, the European Commission’s new flagship programme which seeks to build a more inclusive, resilient and democratic future internet by the end of the next decade. As part of this work, we used cutting-edge data-driven methods to map the latest trends in emerging technologies and social issues surrounding the internet. This webinar will showcase the most interesting insights we generated, and guide you through using the methodologies developed DELab (Digital Economy Lab of the University of Warsaw) and Eurecat (Technology Centre of Catalonia), two partners in the EU Engineroom consortium. When it comes to making decisions about which new technologies or solutions to invest in, where to focus our attention when it comes to future social challenges or other important decisions that require making our own guesses about what the future might hold, we often rely on anecdotal evidence or outdated data, such as company surveys or patent data (often a couple years behind the real trends). New big data methodologies have made it possible to use web data sources like Wikipedia, Reddit, Meetup or articles in the tech media, which have proven much better at picking up early signals of change. In this webinar, we will tell you more about how our data science team used, for example, natural language processing, network analysis and machine learning to gather insights about how hacker communities talk about quantum computing, where we find most startups active in the ethical AI space, or how the media has covered GDPR. *Our data* All the methodologies we’ve developed and the underlying data, code and insights are freely available to the public, have a look at our GitHub <https://github.com/NGI4EU>and Zenodo <https://zenodo.org/communities/ngi4eu?page=1&size=20>to learn more. Please also have a look at our interactive results page <https://ngi.delabapps.eu/>, which will feature in the webinar. Want to know more? Do join <https://ngidatamappingwebinar.splashthat.com/> us, learn about our methods and ask any questions you might have. *The Webinar * After a brief introduction about the project, we will have short presentations on different methods. David Laniado (Eurecat), Laura Portell (Eurecat), and Cristian Consonni (University of Trento) will talk about using Wikipedia data to study for example the relationships between different internet-related topics and trends over time. Kristóf Gyódi and Michał Paliński will explain their quantitative text mining analysis, based on a novel dataset of 140.000 technology news articles. The methodology implements various natural language processing techniques: analysis of term frequencies, co-occurrences, sentiment analysis and topic modeling. Participating in this webinar does not assume any prior technical knowledge. When and where Our webinar will take place on March 27, from 14:00 – 15:00 CET. You will be able to join it using Zoom at https://nesta.zoom.us/j/123531306 or by calling the right number for where you are <https://zoom.us/zoomconference> and using Meeting ID: 123 531 306. Digital People, Digital Politics- extended deadline- 2nd April and speakers!
by Nayana Dhavan 19 Mar '19

19 Mar '19

CALL FOR CONFERENCE: DIGITAL PEOPLE, DIGITAL POLITICS *May 17, 2019* *Bush House ( North East) ground floor, King's College London, Strand* *Deadline: 2nd April, 2019* We are delighted to announce that Dr. Tobias Blanke will be opening the conference and Dr. Natalie Fenton will be presenting the keynote address. Social media platforms and the internet have become a battleground for ideas and political discussion. As the importance of these digital intermediaries has grown, many questions about how to navigate the world of digital politics in a meaningful and effective way have emerged. With the controversies surrounding the 2016 United States Presidential election, Brexit, the #MeToo movement, and other democratic conflicts across the globe, it is becoming increasingly evident that these media have come to play an essential role in structuring political discourse, social movements, and collective identity. When the internet emerged as a global commodity, it came with promises of nascent forms of political engagement. Digital platforms gave people new methods of voicing common grievances, starting social movements, and creating an impetus towards a more just society. However, in recent years there is evidence of increased polarisation and even hostility in online networks. With curated news feed, echo chambers, and fake news, users can shape their own isolated online politics. This conference will investigate how social media platforms and the digital are changing the nature of political discourse, online debate, and collective action. These platforms have shaped and altered many traditional forms of political involvement, such as campaign funding, candidate representation, and pertinent debates remain as to what extent digital media is enhancing or limiting democratic processes Digital technologies have impacted politics and social engagement in a myriad of ways, so we invite submissions that breach this theme from multifarious critical and methodological approaches and from diverse contexts. The academic implications or this broad topic are numerous, as we begin to understand more deeply how digital technologies are adapting to and transforming the political world. Topics for discussion may include (but are not limited to): • The role of digital media in elections across the globe • Collective action and social movements online • Online campaigns • Alt-Right and populist politics • Free speech and liberty online • Regulation and data misuse of online political spaces • Gender and online politics • Big data and politics Abstracts are to be submitted to digitalpeople.digitalpolitics(a)gmail.com by 2nd April, 2019. We are open to: • Individual papers (250 word abstract with a short academic bio, plus any specific requirements authors may have). • Panel proposals (250 word abstract with a short academic bio for each person, additional 250 word abstract for the panel as a whole, plus any specific requirements authors may have). • Workshops (1.5 hours – 250 word abstract with the aims and a description of the proposed workshop, short academic bios of workshop organisers plus any specific requirements organisers may have) • Posters/ multimedia presentations/ art (250 word abstract with a short academic bio, any relevant URLS, plus any specific requirements). All applicants will be notified as to whether or not they have been invited to present by 15th April, 2019. For updated information on the conference, please see the website: http://newperspectivesdh.com Contact us at Digitalpeople.digitalpolitics(a)gmail.com for questions and to send in your abstracts!
